Nike’s Six Million Environmental Design Tool. Now Yours. For Free.

Image: Nike A couple of weeks ago Nike unveiled a for-general-consumption version of their Environmental Apparel Design Tool. It is a replica of the calculator they use in-house when putting together their Considered Design collection, and is said to leverage “Nike’s collected data from more than a decade of evaluation of materials, and the examination of waste footprints in hundreds of apparel products across all sport categories.” “This tool is about making it simple for designers to make the most sustainable choices right at the start of the product creation process.” said Hannah Jones, Vice President of Nike Sustainable Bu… Read the full story on TreeHugger

GLOBAL POLITICAL AWAKENING: The History of Health Tyranny: Codex Alimentarius, part 1

http://globalpoliticalawakening.blogspot.com/2010/11/history-of-health-tyranny-c… Contrary to popular belief Codex Alimentarius is neither a law nor a policy. It is in fact a functioning body, a Commission, created by the Food and Agricultural Organization and the World Health Organization under the direction of the United Nations. The confusion in this regard is largely due to statements made by many critics referring to the “implementation” of Codex Alimentarius as if it were legislation waiting to come into effect. A more accurate phrase would be the “implementation of Codex Alimentarius guidelines,” as it would more adequately describe the situation. Codex is merely another tool in the chest of an elite group of individuals whose goal is to create a one world government in which they wield complete control. Power over the food supply is essential in order to achieve this. As will be discussed later, Codex Alimentarius will be “implemented” whenever guidelines are established and national governments begin to arrange their domestic laws in accordance with the standards set by the organization. The existence of Codex Alimentarius as a policy-making body has roots going back over a hundred years. The name itself, Codex Alimentarius, is Latin for “food code”[1] and directly descended from the Codex Alimentarius Austriacus, a set of standards and descriptions of a variety of foods in the Austria-Hungarian Empire between 1897 and 1911.[2] This set of standards was the brainchild of both the food industry and academia and was used by the courts in order to determine food identity in a legal fashion. Even as far back as 1897, nations were being pushed toward harmonization of national laws into an international set of standards that would reduce the “barriers to trade” created by differences in national laws.[3] As the Codex Alimentarius Austriacus gained steam in its localized area, the idea of having a single set of standards for all of Europe began to pick up steam as well. From 1954-1958, Austria successfully pursued the creation of the Codex Alimentarius Europaeus (the European Codex Alimentarius). Almost immediately the UN directed FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization) sprang into action when the FAO Regional Conference for Europe expressed the desire for a global international set of standards for food. The FAO Regional Conference then sent a proposal up the chain of command to the FAO itself with the suggestion to create a joint FAO/WHO programme dealing with food standards. The very next year, the Codex Alimentarius Europeaus adopted a resolution that its work on food standards be taken over by the FAO. In 1961, it was decided by the WHO, Codex Alimentarius Europaeus, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the FAO Conference to create an international food standards programme known as the Codex Alimentarius.[4] In 1963, as a result of the resolutions passed by these organizations two years earlier, Codex Alimentarius was officially created.[5] Although created under the auspices of the FAO and the WHO, there is some controversy regarding individuals who may or may not have participated in the establishment of Codex. Many anti-Codex organizations have asserted that Nazi war criminals, Fritz Ter Meer[6] and Hermann Schmitz[7] in particular, were principal architects of the organization. Because many of these claims are made with only indirect evidence, or no evidence at all, one might be tempted to disregard them at first glance. However, as the allegations gain more and more adherents, Codex has attempted to refute them. In its Frequently Asked Questions section, Codex answers the question, “Is it true that Codex was created by a former war criminal to control the world food supply?”[8] It then goes on to answer the charges by stating: No. It is a false claim. You just need to type the words “Codex Alimentarius” in any search engine and you will find lots of these rumors about Codex. Usually the people spreading them will give no proof but will ask you to send donations or to sign petitions against Codex. Truthful information about Codex is found on the Internet – there is nothing to hide from our side – we are a public institution working in public for the public – we are happy if people want to know more about our work and ask questions. There is an official Codex Contact Point in each member country who will be pleased to answer your questions on Codex.[9] But, as one can see from the statement above, Codex’s response does very little to answer this question beyond simply disagreeing with it. While it is true that many individuals who make this claim provide little evidence for it, the presentation of the information does not necessarily negate its truthfulness. In fact, Codex offers its own website as a source for accurate information about the organization; yet, beyond the FAQ section, there is nothing to be found that is relevant to the “war criminal” allegations. Furthermore, the codexalimentarius.net website is virtually indecipherable, almost to the point of being completely useless. In the end, this response raises more questions than it answers. This is because Codex, if it wanted, could put these rumors to rest by simply posting a list of the individuals and organizations that funded or played an integral role in its creation. However, it does nothing of the sort. Beyond mentioning the FAO and the WHO, we are completely unaware of who or how many other individuals and organizations participated in the creation of Codex Alimentarius. ‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows’ Trailer Warns Of ‘Dark Times’

Second-to-last ‘Potter’ installment hits theaters November 19. By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” Photo: Warner Bros. As promised, the latest trailer for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” arrived online Wednesday (September 22), and it is a doozy. Fans who have been following the trajectory of the film’s crafty promotional plan will have a lot to take in after giving it a look-see. Like the TV spots and clips that have been released before it, this trailer opens with an ominous, almost sinister feel. “These are dark times, there is no denying,” Bill Nighy says as Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour, who is shown giving a press conference on the dire state of world affairs. “Harry … tell me where he is,” Voldemort’s (Ralph Fiennes) serpent-like whisper follows, voicing over images of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named creepily gliding into Dumbledore’s tomb, and then a quick cut of Harry standing alone outside a tent on a rocky landscape. “Our world has faced no greater threat than it does today,” Scrimgeour’s voice continues, over shots of Hermione and Ron looking serious and concerned, and then Harry and Hermione are shown visiting his parents’ grave. “But you can’t fight the war on your own, Mr. Potter,” Scrimgeour’s voice continues. “He is too strong.” As the Minister’s words trail off, Harry is shown holding a broken piece of mirror, which shows Dumbledore falling into a dark abyss. The trailer then kicks into high gear, with dramatic music and shots of preparation for various battles, including a very poignant meeting of Voldemort’s Death Eaters, at which the duplicitous Severus Snape is seated. “We have infiltrated the Ministry,” he says. Cut to chaos at the Ministry, with stuffy politicians trying to maintain order (one of whom is forever-pink-clad Dolores Umbridge flashing her characteristic grimace/facade of calm), and then more familiar shots of Harry, Ron and Hermione traveling cross-country on their journey, over rocky hills, in the middle of a bustling London. This is followed by a series of escape-esque shots, including seeing the six Harry clones/look-alikes, which readers of the book will remember is the tool the Order of the Phoenix use in an attempt to safely move the real Harry from one location to the next. Cut to an impressive array of quick action shots: The Death Eaters attacking Bill and Fleur’s wedding! Hagrid trying to whisk Harry away on his motorbike! Everyone running through the forest! A mid-air magic fight with wizards wielding wands while riding Thestrals! There is even the very tense argument between Ron and Harry in the tent that leads to a physical altercation. More battling! Houses destroyed! Harry, Ron and Hermione running! All leading up to Voldemort’s creepy voice-over once more: “I have seen your heart,” he says. “And it is mine,” before sending a menacing flash of lightning into the sky that cleverly forms the film’s title. Cue the all-over-body chills. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” will hit theaters on November 19. What do you think of the trailer?!? John Legend Challenges Students To Re-Imagine Financial Aid

Singer visited Howard University to launch the $10,000 Get Schooled: College Affordability Challenge. By Alexandra Bradshaw John Legend Photo: MTV Grammy-winning singer John Legend surprised a class at Howard University last week, when he showed up to help kick off the Get Schooled: College Affordability Challenge , calling on current and aspiring college students to propose innovative digital tools to simplify the process of finding funding for school. The singer also became the class’ guest teacher for the day for an upcoming episode of mtvU’s “Stand In.” “Too many of our people are still living in consistent poverty, living in a country where opportunities are not equal,” Legend told the class. “Educational inequality is the reality that where a child is born, what color that child is and/or how much money that child’s parents make determine the quality of his or her education and life prospects. That’s not just, that’s not fair, that’s not right.” Legend — whose new album with the Roots, Wake Up!, is out on Tuesday — spoke of his journey toward obtaining a degree with honors from University of Pennsylvania. He praised past teachers who provided him with the support and guidance to receive a scholarship to UPenn and explained how vital scholarships were to his ability to complete college. “I was one of the lucky ones,” he said. “Too many other kids don’t have those same opportunities today.” Studies have shown that upwards of 2 million college students don’t apply for financial aid that is available to them each year, and that almost two thirds of students surveyed find the process of applying for financial aid difficult and time consuming. In response to these trends, MTV and the College Board Advocacy and Policy Center partnered to launch the Get Schooled: College Affordability Challenge. “They’re calling on you guys and college students nationwide to re-imagine the financial aid process,” Legend explained as he announced the contest. Students nationwide are encouraged to submit ideas for a digital tool that would connect their peers with more money for school at GetSchooled.MTV.com . The grand-prize winner will receive $10,000 and the opportunity to work with world-class design firm frog design to bring their tool to life. Applications are being accepted until December 17, 2010. Go to GetSchooled.com for resources on college completion and to watch the “Get Schooled: You Have a Right” special, featuring President Barack Obama, LeBron James and Kelly Clarkson. Ricky Martin Officially Comes Out

‘I am a fortunate homosexual man,’ Martin writes on his blog. By Jocelyn Vena Ricky Martin Photo: Dan MacMedan/ WireImage Ricky Martin has officially come out of the closet . The Latin pop superstar, who became a father to twin boys in 2008, made the announcement on his blog on Monday (March 29). In the blog post, he writes that he decided to share the truth about his sexuality after he began work on his memoirs. “A few months ago I decided to write my memoirs, a project I knew was going to bring me closer to an amazing turning point in my life,” he wrote. “From the moment I wrote the first phrase I was sure the book was the tool that was going to help me free myself from things I was carrying within me for a long time. Things that were too heavy for me to keep inside. Writing this account of my life, I got very close to my truth. And this is something worth celebrating. “For many years, there has been only one place where I am in touch with my emotions fearlessly and that’s the stage,” he continued. “Being on stage fills my soul in many ways, almost completely. It’s my vice. The music, the lights and the roar of the audience are elements that make me feel capable of anything. This rush of adrenaline is incredibly addictive. I don’t ever want to stop feeling these emotions. But it is serenity that brings me to where I’m at right now. An amazing emotional place of comprehension, reflection and enlightenment. At this moment I’m feeling the same freedom I usually feel only on stage, without a doubt, I need to share.” In the blog post, he notes that throughout his career he has been advised to not talk about his sexuality. “Many people told me: ‘Ricky it’s not important,’ ‘it’s not worth it,’ ‘all the years you’ve worked and everything you’ve built will collapse,’ ‘many people in the world are not ready to accept your truth, your reality, your nature.’ Because all this advice came from people who I love dearly, I decided to move on with my life not sharing with the world my entire truth,” he wrote. “Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage. Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions.” He noted that there are many things that he is more afraid of than “the truth” about who he is. “If someone asked me today, Ricky, what are you afraid of? I would answer the blood that runs through the streets of countries at war … child slavery, terrorism … the cynicism of some people in positions of power, the misinterpretation of faith.’ But fear of my truth? Not at all! On the contrary, it fills me with strength and courage. This is just what I need especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light and who with their outlook teach me new things every day,” he wrote. “To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids where born with. Enough is enough. This has to change. This was not supposed to happen 5 or 10 years ago, it is supposed to happen now. Today is my day, this is my time, and this is my moment. “These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn’t even know existed. “What will happen from now on? It doesn’t matter. I can only focus on what’s happening to me in this moment. The word ‘happiness’ takes on a new meaning for me as of today. It has been a very intense process. Every word that I write in this letter is born out of love, acceptance, detachment and real contentment,” he wrote. “Writing this is a solid step towards my inner peace and vital part of my evolution.” He then concludes the post by saying: “I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.” What do you think of Ricky Martin’s announcement? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Ricky Martin

Miley Cyrus and Her Stage Humping Videos of the Day

You don’t really realize the damage you do to a little whore when you’re a Disney exec and she’s 14 and in your office willing to do whatever she has to do to you since it is in the contract, until you see her taking the dance you taught her to her stage performance in front of 100s of ten year olds in leather shorts. It’s like you can’t molest a teenage girl and not expect her to start thinking her only value is a little whore and the whole thing probably gets you excited because you know you created this.

Nero offers free burning utility

Nero AG has released a freeware data burning utility for the Microsoft Windows platform. The new freeware tool is limited to data discs and CD , DVD copies, but it is totally free and is not time limited (not to be confused with the 15 day trial of Nero 9 ). A cut down copy of the software might be exactly what some users were looking for in the first place, as Nero’s increasingly bulky releases have prompted criticism of the products
