Drake Says ‘Young Sweet Jones’ Reference Pays Tribute To Pimp C

‘I feel like I’m extended UGK family,’ Drizzy tells Mixtape Daily of controversy from Pimp-inspired ‘Put It Down’ verse. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: Octobers Very Own The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Drake lays his game down flat on Bun B’s “Put It Down,” from the certified classic Trill O.G. “I just bought a car/ The n—a Pimp owned it,” Drizzy rhymes on the chorus, paying homage to UGK’s Pimp C. “I threw some tints on it/ He would have loved it how/ Put it down, put it down.” In his guest verse, the Toronto native says, “I got 100 girls in each phone/ Drizzy Drake mane, Young Sweet Jones.” Sweet Jones, of course, was the late Pimp C’s nickname. In fact, a posthumous Pimp album, due on October 5, is titled The Naked Soul of Sweet Jones. (Drake makes a guest turn on a track called “What Up.”) The 23-year-old Young Money franchise player says he’s heard about the small undercurrent of controversy stemming from his tribute-paying reference to the legendary Texas street general. But according to Drake, there was absolutely no disrespect intended. “I just feel that I’m a huge Pimp supporter,” explained Drake, who sends the MC an R.I.P. at the end of his verse. “I’m a huge Pimp fan. I feel like I’m extended UGK family. Bun and Pimp are like uncles, dads to me. They’re G’s. [When I’m around them], I feel like I do around my uncles. They’re still the coldest cats in the world, but Bun makes me feel … he’s a legend. His presence, it’s like me calling myself Young Bun B, [when I call myself] Young Sweet Jones. “It’s just seeing a bit of them in myself; by no means did I mean to offend. I heard it was somebody upset about me making that reference. I think it was somebody in his family or something. But I never mean any disrespect. I love rap. Young Sweet Jones is just a little nickname. People really started calling me that before I ever said it in a rap song. I used to rep for Houston so hard. They just be like, ‘Man, that’s Young Sweet Jones right there.’ I just put it in a song. And it sounded dope.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Shawty Lo Keeps ATL Projects Alive With Mixtape, Film, Book

‘It’s about my life when I was coming up in Bankhead, when I didn’t have nothing,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes and FLX Smith Shawty Lo Photo: Shawty Lo Monday’s Main Pick Street King : Shawty Lo Holding It Down For : Bankhead Mixtape : Bowen Homes Carlos Real Spit : Shawty Lo will continue to salute his projects until the day he goes to that upper room. With his projects torn down by the city of Atlanta, Lo keeps the memory alive on his new mixtape, Bowen Homes Carlos. “It’s the good, the bad and the ugly,” Shawty said about the Bowen projects being demolished. “Good thing is, there was a lot of murders going on in Bowen Homes. The crime rate was high. It’s bad for the people who lived there and are unfortunate and do not have anything. There were no extra bills. Zero rent. Now they gotta get out there and try to make it. It’s getting harder and harder these days.” Lo’s BH movement is more than music. He’s coming out with a documentary, a fragrance and a writing project. “What makes this mixtape special, I got a DVD that comes with it. It’s called ‘Bowen Homes Carlos’ also. So it’s a visual that comes with this mix CD. I got a new cologne, Lo Seduction. It’s for the fellas, but it could go unisex. I got the book ‘BHC.’ It’s about my life when I was coming up in Bankhead, when I didn’t have nothing, when I was unfortunate. My mother was on drugs, my daddy was elsewhere. I was raised by my grandmother. When she passed to cancer, that put me in the streets. I turned a negative into a positive. There’s only one judge, and that’s the man above. It feels good to be here. I must’ve done something right.” Joints to Check For

Megan Fox Is ‘Kind Of Hooked’ On ‘Real Housewives’

‘It’s really embarrassing,’ she says of her reality-TV viewing By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Megan Fox Photo: MTV News Newlywed Megan Fox seems to have settled into a very domestic routine. The “Jonah Hex” actress made it official with her longtime beau, Brian Austin Green , in June and even through she’s been juggling film projects and hitting the promo circuit in recent months, it appears she’s also been boning up on her reality TV. “I’ve been watching ‘Real Housewives.’ It’s embarrassing, but I have,” Fox admitted to MTV News during an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, where she was promoting “Passion Play.” Fox didn’t mention whether her recent nuptials have completely changed her taste in television, but she did reveal that she’s gained a newfound interest in the show. “You know, I hated previous seasons of the New Jersey ‘Housewives,’ but this season I got kind of hooked on that, and it’s really embarrassing.” Fox might be just now getting into the Bravo hit about a crew of catfighting 40ish New Jersey dames flashing their cash and spewing fiery tirades against one another, but any proper “Real Housewives of New Jersey” addict has seen the epic reunion in which newly bankrupt Teresa Giudice and newly departed “Housewives” co-star Danielle Staub go at it. So MTV News had to ask: Is Fox officially a “Housewives” junkie? “I didn’t see the reunion, [but] it’s TiVo’d,” Fox said, indicating she planned to play back the recorded mayhem when she got a chance. “I hear it’s scandalous.” Fox probably hasn’t had time to empty her TiVo with the range of projects on her plate, including the upcoming “Passion Play,” in which she plays Lily, a circus freak with wings sprouting from her back. Chelsea Handler Was A ‘Winner’ At VMAs, Sarah Silverman Says

Former MTV Movie Awards host says VMA audience isn’t ‘an easy crowd.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Sarah Silverman Photo: MTV News Back in 2007, Sarah Silverman hit the MTV Movie Awards stage as the night’s host and took shots at everyone from Paris Hilton to Jack Nicholson to Lindsay Lohan. At this year’s Video Music Awards , fellow comedian Chelsea Handler — who has already been applauded by Katy Perry — had some fun at the expense of Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and, well, Lindsay Lohan . So how does Silverman think Handler did as a host? “I thought it was good,” she told MTV News while in Toronto promoting her movie “Peep World.” “I think she’s really great on her show, and she did great. I mean, look, the truth is, the VMAs is pretty unwinnable in terms of hosting. … I’m just saying it’s not like at the Movie Awards, [which] is filled with actors and they know to be quiet and listen and be at a show.” So what separates the two MTV awards shows? “The VMAs is like crazy rock stars and stuff and everyone’s talking and the lights are up,” she explained. “You don’t feel it watching it at home, but the lights are on, people are milling about, not sitting down, and no one’s listening to you. It’s like going right back to early days of stand-up. I haven’t talked to her about it, but I bet she would say it’s like when you’re performing and no one’s listening and you’re just focusing and trying to say your material, and I think she had a good time, and I’m not saying it looked like [she was struggling]. “I have so many questions,” she continued. “It looked like with the bit with Lady Gaga [when Chelsea emerged with a house on her head and the garage door didn’t open automatically], it looked like there was a remote control and it didn’t work. [And] maybe I’m reading into it and I could just see her face, like, ‘What the f—?’ I think it’s easy to get daunted. It’s not an easy crowd. You have to know that going in. She was great. She’s a winner.” How do you think Chelsea did? Let us know in the comments! The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.

Drake Says He’s Going To ‘Create A World’ On Tour

Toronto MC also reveals fellow Young Money MC Tyga is new opening act on Light Dreams and Nightmares run kicking off Monday. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: MTV News Drake says when his Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour kicks off next week, the lineup will be a little different than originally announced. Instead of having the Clipse open the upcoming tour, he’ll keep it to the home team with Tyga. “Me and Tyga. Family thing,” Drake revealed last week during VMA rehearsals for his Sinatra-inspired performance at the Nokia Theatre. “I love the Clipse. That’s why initially I was like, ‘Man, I wanna go out with them.’ Huge Clipse fan my whole life. But it’s one of those things, man. Me and Tyga being family — both being young, new — it made more sense to head out there with him and take on the world on some YM, Young Money. Ironically, the last tour date is the day Wayne gets home.” Actually, Wayne is slated to get out on November 5, a day before Drake’s final show in Las Vegas at the Hard Rock Hotel’s the Joint. Obviously, a scheduling conflict could have spelled disaster for the Young Money family. But Drake intends to be there to welcome back Wayne at his homecoming show. “He’s ready. He’s just ready to come home,” Drake said of his friend and Young Money boss. “I know he’s in there counting the days now.” The Toronto native also said Wayne has been working out fanatically while inside and he’s getting “huge.” “He’s filling out an ‘XL’ orange suit. Like, ‘What’s up?’ He’s big.” But back to the tour. Drake said he’s excited to be going out with a more elaborate stage show, as well as more time to perform. “This is my first time ever being able to create a world,” he said. “Prior to this, I’ve had to create my world through performance . You literally have to get lost in the music to make you feel like you were somewhere else. All I really had was like two lights or a couple of lights. My lighting guy is phenomenal. I’ve always had great colors. If you look at the photos from my shows, it’s a mirror image of my music: moody, sometimes eerie. What I did was I built a world, a dream world. It’s not based on a set, it’s based on colors; the lighting is phenomenal. I’ve got this one aspect of it where it goes from day to night. It’s really cool.” And Drizzy promised you’ll get an ample dose of So Far Gone, Thank Me Later and his guest features. “I’m dong an hour and 45 minutes,” the 23-year-old revealed. “For me, that’s crazy to carry an hour-and-45. I have trouble — with all the records I have — doing an hour and 15 minutes. [If] I do an hour and 15 minutes, I’m cutting out ‘Miss Me,’ ‘Light Up,’ ‘Money to Blow,’ records people want to hear. It’s gonna be a real interesting tour. I’m adding all the stuff from Thank Me Later. I’m excited to perform in a world. I’ve never done that before. I’ve got background singers now to make stuff sound sweeter. “Really, I go up there and do everything,” he said of his earlier outings like the Away From Home Tour. “The hooks, the singing, the R&B moments, the dancing with the girls — it’s been a test of my showmanship. … We didn’t go the arena-tour route yet. I didn’t tag along with somebody else’s tour. We still do theaters; maximum 500 people. It’s intimate. I want people to walk away and say, ‘That was great show. It was a fun time.’ ” Will you check out Drake’s new tour? Let us know in the comments! Related Photos Drake’s Style: From A To Drizzy Related Artists Drake

Essential Killing: Dear Vincent Gallo, Why Do You Torment Me So?

Oh, Vincent Gallo! There’s no escaping you. You follow me from continent to continent, from festival to festival. Last week, in Venice, I saw your strange little picture Promises Written in Water (also playing here in Toronto), and while I wasn’t wowed, I couldn’t quite dismiss it, either. But while in Venice, I missed Polish filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski’s Essential Killing, which netted you the Best Actor award there — in fact, you’ve got pretty much the only role, aside from Emmanuelle Seigner, who appears very late in the picture. So today in Toronto, I decided to check out Essential Killing. I needed to see for myself if you really deserved that award, you scalawag, you.

Sony Pictures Classics will Ignite U.S. with TIFF’s Incendies

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired domestic distribution rights to Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies at the Toronto Film Festival. The film, which already screened well at Venice and Telluride, follows twins who travel to the Middle East after their mother dies in order to piece together her past. Shocking revelations ensue. It’s not as high profile as the last two Toronto deals, but SPC has proven skillful at releasing foreign dramatic thrillers like A Prophet and The Secret in Their Eyes , so expect to hear more about this one down the line.
