13 Reasons Why: Does It Glorify Suicide?

13 Reasons Why is a breakout hit for Netflix. The streaming network never goes public with download numbers for its programs, but it came out last week that the drama has been the most Tweeted-about series of 2017. In this day and age, there’s nearly no better metric with which to measure success. But 13 Reasons Why has been making headlines ever since its March 31 release for reasons aside from hashtags and social media mentions. The series has raised numerous red flags for mental health experts, many of whom believe it sends a potentially dangerous message about teenage suicide. In short, the show centers around a high school student named Hannah. We find out almost immediately that she’s killed herself, although she still narrates the entire first season because Hannah recorded 13 tapes prior to slitting her wrists, each of which calls out certain individuals at her high school for how they treated her. And, therefore, how each contributed to her decision to take her own life. The drama (co-produced by Selena Gomez ) is meant to leave a strong impact on its viewers, touching on such topics as bullying, sexual assault and underage drinking. Netflix makes it clear, via a special message, at the outset of various episodes that the upcoming content is graphic and mature in nature. But this isn’t enough for some institutions and some doctors. A handful of middle schools and high schools have sent letters home, urging parents to not allow their children to watch 13 Reasons Why without adult supervision. “Suicide is a tough issue to talk about,” says Dr. Christina Conolly, who works for Maryland’s Montgomery County School District, where she helped write a letter that states “adolescents watching without an adult … could be at increased risk of self-harm.” Dr. Conolly doesn’t necessarily call out 13 Reasons Why for any of its storylines, simply saying in general: “Watching a suicide or knowing someone who has died by suicide can lead others to completing a suicide themselves.” The National Association of School Psychologists agrees, declaring in its own statement: “We do not recommend that vulnerable youth, especially those who have any degree of suicidal ideation, watch this series.” More specifically, some in the professional field question why the show never really brings up the topic of mental health in general, while also finding fault with the way in which it paints suicide as a form of revenge. They also have a major problem with how a guidance counselor appears to blame Hannah for having been raped by a fellow student. It’s this conversation, Hannah herself says in one of her audio tapes, that serves as the final nail in her tragic coffin. In the upstate New York community of Grand Island, school administrators warned that the series “sensationalizes suicide.” Indiana’s largest school district warned in an email that the series “does not accurately model what we would want or hope individuals do if they are struggling or in crisis.” 13 Reasons Why is based on a 2007 novel by the same name. But the TV version takes many liberties, veering far off the original script at times and expanding on many developments and character arcs. Gomez, who has talked openly about her own emotional struggles over the years, said she was braced for a backlash upon agreeing to produce the drama. “It’s going to come no matter what. It’s not an easy subject to talk about. But I’m very fortunate with how it’s doing,” she has said. Brian Yorkey, who won a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize for the musical Next to Normal, was one of the main writers on 13 Reasons Why. He disagrees with the critics who think the show paints suicide in any sort of positive or glamorous light.  “Many people are accusing the show of glamorizing suicide and I feel strongly – and I think everyone who made the show – feel very strongly that we did the exact opposite,” he says, adding: What we did was portray suicide and we portrayed it as very ugly and very damaging.” View Slideshow: 21 Stars Who Committed Suicide According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, suicide is the second-leading cause of death among American teens between the ages of 15 to 19. It’s a real issue, one that those behind 13 Reasons Why say they have taken as seriously as possible. Asked about troubled teens and their possible response to what they see on screen, including a graphic depiction of Hannah killing herself, Gomez says: “They have to see something that’s going to shake them. This show is as real as it can possibly get.”

Johnny Depp is a "Habitual Liar," Management Firm Claims

If you’re a celebrity, it’s not generally not a good thing if your finances are in the news. Sure, there’s the occasional story about a record-breaking payday for an actor or athlete, but generally, when the whole world is talking about your bank account, it’s because they can’t fathom how someone who started with so much wound up with so little. For the past few months, rumors that Johnny Depp is broke have been circulating in the tabloids and on social media. It’s almost impossible to imagine Depp being anything other than fabulously wealthy, what with his decades A-list star and essential role in popularizing one of Hollywood’s longest-running franchises, but the rumors of his penury come from a reliable source – namely, court documents in a pair of increasingly ugly lawsuits. Back in February, Depp sued his management group (the imaginatively-titled The Management Group), accusing them of mishandling his funds and failing to alert him that he was on the verge of bankruptcy. TMG counter-sued, alleging that Depp’s public complaints were damaging their brand, and accusing the actor of spending himself into relative poverty. The group cited such lavish expenditures as a $30,000 a month wine budget and Depp’s decision to spend $3 million on a custom ash cannon to fire the remains of his friend Hunter S. Thompson into the atmosphere. Hilariously, Depp corrected that figure in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal – explaining that the cannon actually cost $5 million. But while Depp was occasionally self-deprecating in the interview, he spent much of it going off on the firm that he blames for his dire financial straits. “Why didn’t they drop me as a client if I was so out of control?” Depp told the paper. “I’ve worked very, very hard for a lot of years and trusted a lot of people, some who’ve clearly let me down.” TMG is now firing back, using Depp’s own words against him in a statement issued to USA Today: The firm calls Depp “habitual liar who denies responsibility for his own outrageous conduct and coerces others to lie for him.” “Johnny Depp and his sister were involved in every significant business decision during the 17 years TMG represented him,” the statement said. “Depp now admits to his extravagant spending but blames TMG for not dropping him as a client.” Depp has yet to respond to the comments, and it’s likely that he’ll simply let his lawyers do the talking for him. Whatever the case, this situation seems to be on the verge of getting even more vitriolic.

Ben Affleck & Jennifer Garner: Still Considering Divorce?!

Just last week, several media outlets reported that Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner had decided to reconcile after 18 months of separation. The news didn’t come as a total shock, as neither Affleck nor Garner filed for divorce  during the year and a half they were apart. Now, however, it seems the tabloid press may have jumped the gun by reporting that Bennifer 2.0 was officially back on. According to Us Weekly, despite rumors to the contrary, Garner is still very much considering calling it quits on her marriage. The magazine claims that Garner is now open to the possibility of giving Ben another chance, but as of right now, the couple remains separated. “They could always get back together,” a source tells Us. “There is a lot of love and support there, and they have worked out a way to have their family that works for them.” Sounds like Ben and Jen remain mired in a limbo of indecision, unwilling to officially pull the plug and file for divorce, but afraid of giving the man-and-wife thing another go only to have it blow up in their faces. It seems that for much of their time apart, Jen has been hoping for Ben to change his ways (He’s been accused of heavy drinking, excessive gambling, and nanny-banging Christine Ouzounian .) and now he’s finally beginning to show progress. Sources say Jen is currently dithering over whether it’s too little, too late. The tipster tells Us that Affleck and Garner’s issues go back several years, and Ben has had to talk Jen into sticking it out on several occasions: “They were going to divorce when Sam was born, but you know how it is — baby comes and solves the issues for a bit, but it’s just a Band-Aid. It hasn’t been working for ages,” a source said at the time. “Ben truly wanted his idea of family life and the idea of family he had growing up in Boston, so he stayed in it longer than he wanted to because of the kids and the idea of family. But he couldn’t save it.” During their separation, Ben and Jen attended marriage counseling , but sources say they quit after a couple sessions. These days it sounds like there’s a remote possibility of a reconciliation … … but the smart money is still on Affleck and Garner going their separate ways. Johnny Depp: Where Did All His Money Go?

As we reported earlier this week, several sources are claiming that Johnny Depp is flat broke , as a result of years of extravagant spending on incredibly posh luxury items. Some of his financial woes are the result of his wildly expensive divorce from Amber Heard , which has cost the actor than $7 million in settlement cash, to say nothing of what he was forced to fork over in terms of assets and legal fees. All told, the ill-fated marriage probably plundered Captain Jack’s treasure chest for upwards of 10 mill, but that’s chump change to a screen icon with a wildly lucrative Disney franchise, right? Well – not if the stories about Depp’s spending are true, and as unbelievable as they sound, they come from a reliable source. Depp recently tried to sue his financial management firm, TMG, for mishandling his funds. TMG countersued, and the court documents published by several media outlets paint a picture of a man who loves the high life and spends without a thought for his own future. The spending habit that’s grabbed the most headlines is Depp’s tendency to spend upwards of $30,000 a month on wine. At $360,000 a year, that’s certainly a lot of high-end vino, but by itself the costly vintages wouldn’t put too much of a dent in Depp’s bank account. After all, this is a guy who’s pulled in $25 million a picture for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, plus back-end percentages on everything from box office to merchandising. By some estimates the franchise has earned him upwards of half a billion dollars. The actor has even said that he was “overpaid” for this films, confessing that he made “stupid money” and did it solely to ensure a comfortable future for his kids. Unfortunately, if TMG’s claims are to be believed, there may not be much for left over for Lily-Rose and Jack Depp. The company alleges “extravagant and extreme” spending on Depp’s part that left in the position of being forced to pay his income taxes late several years in a row. And just what in the hell did he blow all that cash on? Well, in addition to those crates of ’47 Bordeaux, Depp dropped an unknown quantity of cash on the ultimate celebrity status symbol: a private island. And, of course, no Bahamian paradise would be complete with a massive yacht: Depp’s 150-footer reportedly cost $18 million. It seems the actor’s passion for transportation isn’t limited to the seas, as he’s spent untold millions on a collection of about 45 classic cars, and drops a reported $200,000 a month on his Gulfstream GV private jet. (Depp refuses to fly commercial, which should come as no surprise at this point.) But as much as he likes to move around, Depp also appears to enjoy time at home – or should we say homes ? TMG claims he recently spent $75 million to “acquire, improve, and furnish 14 residences” around the world. So yeah, it’s not hard to see why Depp might be dragging his feet on forking over Heard’s divorce cash – as well as looking for someone to blame for his financial situation.

Prince Harry: Engaged to Meghan Markle! Sort Of!

According to the latest issue of OK! Weekly, we can remove the question mark in THIS HEADLINE . Because, according to the latest issue of OK! Weekly, it has finally happened and it is very much official: Prince Harry is engaged to Meghan Markle! We emphasize again: according to the latest issue of OK! Weekly, that is. An anonymous source, who the tabloid swears is a real person who actually knows stuff, shouts on the above cover that Markle is on track to be England’s first “American Princess.” This same insider even describes the way in which Harry asked for Markle’s hand in marriage. “The prince asked Meghan to marry him over a glass of champagne,” alleges the magazine, adding: “He was worried she would think he was being rash, but she said yes right away. It wasn’t a formal proposal, but a sweet, intimate pledge of their commitment to each other.” Wait… it was NOT a formal proposal? And yet the two are “engaged,” this same publication swears? And the Queen herself even picked out the “antique family ring” for Markle, if the above cover is to be believed? We smell something amiss here. And not just because this same tabloid once claimed Harry was engaged to Cressida Bonas, despite no such engagement ever taking place… We’re on to you, OK! Weekly! Still, even if Harry and Markle have no plans to wed any time too soon, that doesn’t mean the relationship isn’t serious. Heck, Harry has met Markle’s dad ! And Markle has met members of the Royal Family as well, as she’s spending a majority of her time overseas in London these days. Best known for her role as Rachel on the USA Network, Markle met Harry last spring while the latter was in Toronto for a charity event and the former was filming her popular series. Meghan than shared many photos of her time in England on Instagram over the summer, although she never mentioned that she was dating the handsome prince while taking trips to that country. Finally, in September, the exciting cat was finally out of the romantic bag. Ever since, paparazzi have been following the couple around as much as possible, while wedding and even baby speculation has run rampant. There was some tension at the outset of the romance, however. Not between Harry and Markle; between Markle and idiots online who harassed her and insulted her. Harry even took the rare approach of addressing his relationship in public, issuing a statement through a palace spokesperson that basically told everyone to shut the heck up. “The past week has seen a line crossed. His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment,” the open letter read in November .  It continued as follows: Some of this has been very public – the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments. Some of it has been hidden from the public – the nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers in order to get to her front door; the attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed; the substantial bribes offered by papers to her ex-boyfriend; the bombardment of nearly every friend, co-worker, and loved one in her life View Slideshow: Meghan Markle: 16 Things to Know About Prince Harry’s New Squeeze And it concluded perfectly: It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game.’ He strongly disagrees. This is not a game – it is her life and his.
