Happy 18th Birthday, Justin Bieber! Here’s A Fashion Flipbook Of …
As Bieber celebrates his 18th birthday, we’re counting down his 18 best moments so far. Check out #1! By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Valery Hache/ AFP/ Getty Images Moment by moment, we have finally arrived to Justin Bieber ‘s top milestone. This week, we kicked off a countdown of his 18 greatest moments , and having already made our way through most of the list , we have reflected on the singer’s incredible rise to fame through vintage videos and reliving some of the classic memories that have made Bieber the star he is today. What else made the list of top Bieber moments? Well, keep reading for the remainder of the list, including our pick for #1. 5. My World Goes on the Road Kicked off in June 2010 in Hartford, Connecticut ,Bieber took the hugely popular tour around the world. With plentiful stops, the spectacle was filled with smooth moves, catchy tunes and tons of love. For his Madison Square Garden show, Bieber brought out famous friends Miley Cyrus and Usher , and he filmed the performance for “Never Say Never.” He wrapped up the tour in October 2011 in Venezuela. 4. 2010 Video Music Awards Bieber went into the 2010 VMAs as one of the biggest pop stars in the world. He took home the Moonman for Best New Artist, got to hang with his pals like Drake , and performed “Baby” and “Somebody to Love” in a manner fit for past teen idols like the Beatles. “Wow,” he said when he took the stage to accept his prize. “This means a lot to me. Thank you to everybody here.” 3. Chopping Off His Hair February 22, 2011 is a day marked in history. It’s when Bieber debuted a shorter hairdo , lopping off his signature floppy style. Since then, Bieber has experimented with his hair, but no style has been quite as headline-making as that initial haircut. “We knew it was going to be a big deal,” his hairstylist Vanessa Price explained to MTV News at the time. “We knew it was going to shock fans, but we also knew it was going to be a change in terms of growing up. I think that’s something that people adjust to.” 2. 2009 VMAs At the 2009 VMAs , Bieber arrived at the show with Diddy, shouted out one lucky fan and instantly went from Internet star to real-world sensation thanks to the high-profile red carpet debut. And, in the end, he ended up being a part of VMA history. Shortly after the Kanye West/VMA outburst, Bieber and Nick star Miranda Cosgrove took the stage to announce Taylor Swift’s performance, moments after the rapper interrupted her, making him one of the folks involved in turning a negative into a positive. 1. His First YouTube Video Five years ago, under the moniker KidRauhl, a very, very, very young (OK, he was 13) Justin posted a YouTube video of himself singing Ne-Yo’s “So Sick.” Displaying his soulful chops and ear for pure pop melodies, it was the video that kicked off a phenomenon. The videos posted after that, where he covered tracks by everyone from Justin Timberlake to Chris Brown, and the frenzy they incited caught the eye of his now manager Scooter Braun, which led to a heated battle between Usher and Justin Timberlake to see who would sign the teen dream. Usher won and the rest is, as they say, history. Share your birthday wishes for Justin and weigh in on the top 18 moments on our Facebook page! Happy 18th birthday, Justin Bieber ! Now that we’ve counted down the superstar’s 18 greatest moments, stick with MTV News as we celebrate the milestone all day. Related Videos Happy Birthday, Justin Bieber! Brandy and Monica recently released a new track together, “It All Belongs to Me,” and the dynamic R&B duo are now in talks to tour together this summer. Atlanta native Monica talked to Connecticut radio station 93.7 where she stated: “We’re dedicated to a tour in the summer. Looking back at it, it was so silly and so juvenile that we’re dedicated to this song in a different way.” While nothing is set in stone, Monica says she and Brandy really hope everything works out: “We’re working on that now and trying to find different sponsors and people that will get us in the cities we feel like we should be in, so it’s not just as easy as saying it, but we’re actually putting forth the effort to try and make sure it happens.” Look for Monica’s album, New Life , when it hits stores April 10th. Brandy’s as-yet-untitled album will be released in May. MTV News talks to Whitney Port and other designers to find the latest trends that appeal to all fashion personalities. By Christina Garibaldi Whitney Port presents her collection during New York Fashion Week 2012 Photo: Getty Images NEW YORK — Fall Fashion Week took over New York City as the top designers showed off their collections for the Fall/Winter 2012 season. Thousands of fashionistas descended upon Lincoln Center to get a glimpse of what will be hot for fall, but MTV News was able to give you a front-row seat to all the action. All week long, we learned about the hottest trends for the fall, and depending on what your fashion personality may be, we have found the perfect look for you. Carefree And Laid-Back Fashionista If you are more a laid-back girl who likes to glam it up every now and then, we suggest taking a look at Whitney Port’s line , Whitney Eve . The former “The City” star, who told MTV News she was “pretty nervous” about showing her line for the first time as a solo designer, mixed traditional yet fun dresses with unique patterns, perfectly translating her kaleidoscope inspiration for the collection. “This line is obviously really near and dear to my heart, I’ve been working on it for quite some time,” Port told MTV News backstage at her show. “It’s really reflective of my aesthetic, it’s kind of that easy Los Angeles girl mixed with like the little funky streety vibe of New York. [There are] really fun prints, great embellishments, lots of texture. Glitter And Glam Fashionista If you love a little glitter and glam in your wardrobe (what girl doesn’t?) then check out Alice + Olivia . Worn by celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Selena Gomez and Jessica Alba , designer Stacey Bendet mixed bold colors with sequins and leather, making this line not only incredibly fashionable, but also extremely wearable. “The thing for this season was vixen Lolita character,” Bendet told MTV News about the inspiration behind her collection. “The colors are really rich. It’s sort of an interesting palate of taking these bright but rich colors and mixing it with black, white and browns in an autumnal kind of way, so it feels sort of happy, but rich and fresh. It makes you smile.” Futuristic Fashionista If you are looking to stand out in a crowd, take a peek at Michelle Smith’s collection, Milly . Her 2012 fall collection showed off a futuristic flare, catching everyone’s eye with her choice of vibrant colors of pink, greens and cobalt blue, which added a dramatic pop to her array of dresses, coats and skirts. “I started with very technological fabrics, bounded double wools, textured tweeds a lot of lamination techniques,” Smith said. “Very modern, futuristic fabrics, but they’re cut in more traditionally classic couture silhouettes.” To get a full recap of 2012 New York Fashion Week, check out MTV Style.

Legendary MC teams up with Kanye West for landmark Watch the Throne album and a spot on Hottest MCs in the Game list. By MTV News staff Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images Jay-Z ‘s legacy in rap is unparalleled. Hov probably best summed up his career on 2003’s “What More Can I Say” when he spit, “There’s never been a n—a this good for this long/ This ‘hood or this pop, this hot or this strong.” But were the God MC’s past accomplishments enough to rest on in 2011? Over the past year he continued to raise the bar, teaming up with “little brother” Kanye West to drop the groundbreaking Watch the Throne album and earning himself the #6 spot on MTV News’ Hottest MCs in the Game VII list. “If you talk about the Throne, yeah, top five, no question. But Jay himself? From January to August, what was going on?” asked Rahman Dukes, MTV News’ director of hip-hop news, pointing out Jigga’s inactivity apart from WTT. “Kanye was moving.” Want to join the debate? Just hit us on Twitter using the hashtag #HottestMC! Indeed, Yeezy was rolling creatively after the November 2010 release of his critically acclaimed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, while Jay hadn’t dropped a solo effort since 2009, when his triumphant Blueprint III made him our #1 Hottest MC . When it came to recognizing Jay for the recent success of the Throne, however, many members of the Hip-Hop Brain Trust argued that much of the credit should go to Kanye, not Jigga. HOT STREAK Album: Watch the Throne with Kanye West as the Throne Selected Mixtapes: None Singles: “H.A.M,” “Otis” and “N—as in Paris” (as the Throne); “Glory” (featuring B.I.C.) Street Bangers: “No Church in the Wild” (as the Throne) Key Guest Appearances: Rihanna’s “Talk That Talk,” J. Cole’s “Nice Watch” and Young Jeezy’s “I Do” Meteoric Metrics: Captured another #1 with now-platinum Watch the Throne, scored a #1 Rap hit with “N—as in Paris” and topped Forbes’ Hip-Hop’s Top Earners list Business Ventures: New Jersey Nets minority owner broke ground on Brooklyn’s Barclay Center arena, where he plans to move the NBA team Tours: Grossed more than $448 million on the Watch the Throne Tour, played two dates at New York’s famed Carnegie Hall Monumental Moment: Hov and Yeezy did what no superstar rapper in recent memory has been able to do: kept their album from leaking and thus created a moment Forecast: Jay’s no stranger to the “Hottest MCs in the Game” list. It’s a safe bet that Hov will be back next year if he releases his planned solo album and the WTT follow-up. “You can’t divorce [the album] from Kanye. It really feels like Jay rode shotgun on it,” said Rebecca Thomas, an editor/writer at MTV News. “That project has Kanye’s footprints and handprints all over it.” The truth is, outside of WTT, Hov didn’t do the kinds of things that help an MC bolster his stats. Instead, the rap mogul was focused on his many business ventures — from his Brooklyn-bound Nets to re-launching the 40/40 Club in New York. Although few could argue that when he released “Glory,” days after the birth of daughter Blue Ivy Carter, he created quite the musical moment. And it was hard to ignore the impact and cultural significance of Watch the Throne, even if Jay’s contribution was collaborative, not solo. Bypassing a traditional album rollout, the Throne serviced only two records to radio prior to their LP release: “H.A.M.” and “Otis.” They also went with a digital-only release initially, electing to postpone sending physical copies of WTT to stores until four days later. The pair placed a premium on their music — and it paid off. They avoided an album leak , a near impossibility in the digital era. When the joint LP was finally released on August 8, it seemed as if the entire hip-hop community was listening at the same time, dissecting it on Twitter and spawning multiple trending topics. It hit #1 on iTunes in 23 different countries a day later. “At the end of the day, that album is an ‘event album.’ You’re never going to get an album like that ever again,” said Yomi Desalu, MTV’s senior director of music and talent. When first-week sales were tallied, the Throne had sold 436,000 copies and landed at #1 on the Billboard 200. The album’s third single (second, if you don’t count bonus track “H.A.M.”) proved to be its biggest. “N—as in Paris” not only topped Billboard ‘s Rap chart, it became a quick fan favorite that prompted the Throne to perform the track multiple times at each stop on their tour. So when it comes to the “Hottest MCs” criteria, Hov largely hits the major points. He has proven his impact on the game is enduring and maintained a buzz in the streets, even if he didn’t make as much noise in early 2011. Jigga was a lock in the sales department and, at 42 years old, he remains among rap’s top lyricists. On “Otis,” he reminded fans who invented swag, so style wasn’t a problem, and Jay had enough side hustles that you could write a book about them. (Seriously, you could: check Zack O’Malley’s “Empire State of Mind: How Jay-Z Went From Street Corner to Corner Office.”) Perhaps a solo LP would’ve given Jay that extra push. Makes us wonder what might go down on Hottest MCs VIII if Hov does drop that tentatively planned 12th solo album and a second Throne LP . Who gon’ stop him then? Tune in to MTV2 on Sunday, February 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT to catch ” MTV2 Presents: Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts ,” then watch “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” immediately after at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT before capping the night off with ” Sucker Free Certified ” at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Well to start off this story, I have been a HUGE fan of Justin’s since day one. Before he was even famous. Living in Tennessee , you’d never think that someone as big as Justin Bieber would shoot a music video in your home town. I never really had hope or even thought that one day I’d be in the same town as Justin Bieber. On September 28, 2011 that all changed. I had just gotten home from school and it was around 4:00pm. I went on Facebook and started seeing all these statuses about how Justin Bieber was downtown Franklin and people kept posting pictures of them with Selena at Chik-fil-a. Not even grasping what was going on, I screamed at the TOP of my lungs and told my mom we had to go. My mom, loving Justin almost as much as I do, hopped in the car and we were in downtown Franklin in minutes. Turns out, he was shooting a music video for ‘Mistletoe’ and no one was allowed to be close enough to the set to see Justin. So, my clever friends (that I met up with there) and I decided we’d go to the back of the store he was shooting in front of and see what was going on. There we saw the beautiful shinning black tour bus of our future husband. We started balling. It wasn’t even Justin, just his bus, but any trace of him was unbelievable. It is about 4:45 and only about 15 people had found the tour bus. Waiting for a spark of Bieber, we just stood outside there talking. Then all of the sudden my mom notices Selena. She had her car pull up, but before she gets in we yell, “Hey Selena!” and she politely waves back and smiles. By the way, that girl is FLAWLESS without a trace of makeup on. Anyway so she gets in her car and rides off. By this time, we had talked to Ryan Good and Kenny and we were drying to see Justin. It is now around 5:30ish and so many people have arrived around the bus, the security guards had to put barriers up but luckily we were front and center! Justin had been no where to be found but suddenly I hear the biggest scream come from the other side of the tour bus. That was a Justin scream. Before I knew it, Bieber was walking 10 feet in front of me with his “people” around him. I couldn’t help but burst into tears. I was so close to my inspiration. We decided to start chants and sing his songs at the top of our lungs! After this we see Jazzy (cutest girl ever) and then eventually Justin’s dad and later that night his beautiful mommy. This goes on until about 8:30pm. And at this time Justin accidentally left the blinds open on the bus and we saw him change his shirt hahaha! So at this time it starts to POUR down rain. But do you think I cared? Not at all. Standing in the rain chanting and singing to Justin, I was having the time of my life. Long story short I ended up seeing him 4 other times walking to and from his tour bus. Let me tell you that boy is even cuter in person! Needless to say, that was my Bieber experience. From 4:30pm-12am, I got to fulfill my Bieber craving. Even though I never talked to him face to face it was enough for me. Of course I would like to meet him but I really felt a connection with Justin and you could tell he really cares for his fans. He wanted us to stay safe outside and not get sick from the cold rain. He is such a sweetheart and I just want you all to know that he truly wishes everyone could have a Bieber Experience. I know he’d do anything to make it happen. Keep wishing because you never know when that day might come true. Mine did. Never say Never. More: Well to start off this story, I have been a HUGE fan of…

Band already having discussions about a new album — but need to find time to do it. By James Montgomery Black Keys Photo: MTV News Next month, the Black Keys will kick off their first-ever North American arena tour, an accomplishment the dynamic duo never thought possible 10 years ago, when they were mowing lawns (and working the buffet circuit ) in their hometown of Akron, Ohio. And, truth be told, they’re still trying to wrap their heads around playing such massive venues, though, thanks to the success of their Brothers and El Camino albums, they’re slowly beginning to realize that things have changed — for the best, of course. “Things are obviously different; we’re playing arenas everywhere, and it’s crazy,” frontman Dan Auerbach told MTV News. “I don’t know; it’s all very new for us. I think we’re still trying to get used to the idea of playing such big shows wherever we go.” “[When we first started], I’d never even been to a concert that was larger than maybe 2,000 people, so I never thought we’d be able to play places this big,” drummer Patrick Carney added. “I do know things have changed a little bit, because we’ve been touring for a very long time, and every single show, I sweat through an entire shirt and pair of pants, and after almost every show, I ask our tour manager if I could have some laundry done; and yesterday, my laundry was done for the first time.” Clean pants are very important. And while the Keys are still very firmly in the eye of the El Camino storm, they’ve already laid out a list of goals they’d like to accomplish in 2012 (“We just want to make it through without getting some pneumonia or something like that,” Auerbach joked), which, as they told MTV News following the premiere of their “Gold on the Ceiling” video, also includes plans for a new album — if they find the time, of course. “We actually just talked about it a couple days ago,[but] we can’t really [write on the road],” Auerbach said. “It’s kind of impossible, because we’re both so insecure that we don’t like messing up in front of people, and that’s all we do when we try to write songs, is mess up over and over again. [But] Maybe [by the] end of this year, who knows?” What are you expecting from the Keys’ next album? Let us know in the comments! Lana Del Rey’s 15 minutes may be nearing their end (she did just postpone her tour after tanking on SNL ), but she’s got one last charge towards relevance up her sleeve; just check out her new jam inspired by The Hunger Games called, simply, “Hunger Games.” So Lana. So Katniss. “This District smells like rat piss/My name is Katniss/I play the Hunger Gaaaaames…” Okay, so it’s not technically Lana Del Rey. But isn’t Lana Del Rey herself more of an idea, really? One made of pouty lips and moody sunsets and Veronica Lake hair that belongs to us all? Well anyway, Second City’s Holly Laurent does an uncanny job smashing together these two zeitgeisty entities into one weirdly perfect package that boils down both the neophyte songstress and Suzanne Collins’ bestselling YA phenomenon to their essences.
