Justin Bieber Explains Why He Chose Tour Over BET Awards

‘This show was booked before the nominees came out, and I don’t cancel shows,’ singer tweets from Milwaukee. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage Justin Bieber was disappointed that he couldn’t make it to Sunday’s 2010 BET Awards , where he was nominated for Best New Artist. He was on the road for his just-launched My World headlining tour , he explained on Twitter, and never considered cancelling or postponing the show. “Rolled into Milwaukee for the show today…gonna be huge…22,000 people sold out. I heard. Missing everybody out in LA for the BET Awards,” he tweeted on Sunday. “Just wanted to say I would have been at the awards, but this show was booked before the nominees came out, and I don’t cancel shows. “I would never cancel a show and let down the fans unless I had to … but I do wish I was there too, because I am honored to just be nominated,” he added. Though he lost the Best New Artist prize to Queens MC Nicki Minaj, the teen singer found the nomination enough of an honor. “But I do wish I was there too, because I am honored to just be nominated but just goes to show that music is COLOR BLIND!! It is the universal language, and good music brings us all together … the way it should be.” Bieber added a message to his friends who were at the Shrine Auditorium. “Everyone out there best of luck… Shout-out to my big bro @usherraymondiv performing 2nite!” And while the celebrities at the BET Awards were gathering trophies, Bieber celebrated another successful night of his tour in a less formal manner: with a water gun fight . “As soon as we got offstage we had an EPIC WATER FIGHT!!!” he wrote. “Last night we were caught off guard but 2nite we came prepared.” Do you think Bieber should have planned for the BET Awards? Sofia Coppola And Phoenix’s Thomas Mars Have Baby Girl

Cosima is the couple’s second child, joining 3-year-old sister Romy. By Eric Ditzian Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars Photo: Getty Images Oscar-winning director Sofia Coppola and Grammy-winning Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars have recently given birth to their second baby girl, People magazine reports. Named Cosima, the girl was born “within the last month,” a source told the magazine. The newborn is the couple’s second daughter, joining Romy, who is now 3 years old. The couple began dating in 2005 and revealed that Coppola, who won a best writing Oscar for “Lost in Translation,” was pregnant in December. The duo have most recently collaborated on Coppola’s upcoming film “Somewhere,” with Phoenix writing what Mars has described as a “very minimal” soundtrack for the project. “She asked us to do some music, very in the spirit of ‘Love Like a Sunset,’ so we tried to put that track and elements of the track in the movie, and it worked well,” Phoenix guitarist Christian Mazzalai told MTV Radio. “And then we wrote very small pieces of music, very minimal music for the movie too. … We’re very proud of it.” “This is the first time we feel [that] the music fits to the picture,” bassist Deck D’Arcy added. “We’ve [been on] many soundtracks before, and it’s always weird for us — producers must like [our songs], of course, if they use them — but for us, it’s always weird to see them in the films.” Starring Stephen Dorff as a Hollywood bad boy, “Somewhere” takes place largely at the famed Chateau Marmont hotel. The first trailer dropped earlier this month, with the film expected to hit theaters in December. Mars, meanwhile, continues to tour with Phoenix, which won a Best Alternative Music Album Grammy last year. The band kicked off the latest leg of their tour June 11 in North Carolina and then headed off to Germany and the U.K. They’ll weave throughout Europe before returning to the States in August and finally wrapping up in Mexico City at the end of September. Justin Bieber Opening Act Jessica Jarrell ‘Excited’ To Tour

‘It’s overwhelming, but a lot of fun to look out and see all of those girls screaming,’ the 15-year-old says of opening for Bieber. By Jocelyn Vena Jessica Jarrell Photo: MTV News HARTFORD, Connecticut — It may be Justin Bieber ‘s world, but tourmate Jessica Jarrell seems determined to prove she deserves a place in the pop universe. The 15-year-old Mercury Records singer is opening up for Bieber this summer as the teen sensation kicks off his much-anticipated My World Tour . And while Bieber admitted some pre-tour jitters on Twitter , Jarrell was already sounding like an old pro, saying she had a “rush” before the kickoff show on Wednesday in Hartford, Connecticut, at the XL Center. “I was a little nervous earlier. I was like, ‘Oh my God! There’s going to be so many people,’ but you know I’m really excited,” she told MTV News when we caught up with her on her tour bus. “It’s overwhelming but it’s a lot of fun to be able to look out and see all of those girls screaming. It’s just crazy! You get an adrenaline rush!” In the moments leading up to the show, Jarrell said she hadn’t spoken to Bieber that day, but guessed what he might be feeling on his big day. “I haven’t talked to him today! I’m sure he’s good,” she said. “I’m sure he’s excited.” In addition to opening for Bieber (Sean Kingston is also on the bill), Jarrell also makes an appearance during Justin’s set to perform their duet “Overboard.” “I come out during his set and there’s a bunch of fog on the stairs,” she teased. “It’s going to be really cool. I’m excited about that song. It’s a lot of fun. We goof off and have a great time. We rehearsed it [Tuesday]; we had a really good time. It sounds great to be in an arena. Orianthi Talks Comparisons Between Adam Lambert And Michael Jackson

‘He’s got that showmanship thing,’ Lambert tourmate and onetime MJ guitarist tells MTV News. By James Montgomery with reporting by Jim Cantiello Adam Lambert Photo: Jemal Countess/ Getty Images Among his most dedicated fans — the Super Glamberts of the world — Adam Lambert is readily referred to as the second coming of Michael Jackson . This has a whole lot to do with his style, showmanship and the fact that he covered MJ’s “Black or White” during his run on “American Idol.” To most of us, it’s a comparison that raises eyebrows, but it might not be as off-base as you’d think. At least not according to singer/guitarist Orianthi. She can see the similarities between the two, and she would know better than anyone. After all, she’s about the only artist we can think of who’s worked with both Jackson and Lambert — as a guitarist on the late King of Pop’s planned This Is It concert series at London’s O2 arena and the opening act on Lambert’s current Glam Nation Tour . So when MTV News spoke to the Australian-born guitar goddess before Lambert’s two-night Glam Nation stand in New York, we asked her about those comparisons, and this is what she had to say: “Adam’s amazing, he really is. He’s got that showmanship thing; he’s a real entertainer. And that’s what Michael was — he was an incredible entertainer. He’s an amazing artist, and it’s great to be on this tour with him.” While traveling as a part of Lambert’s road show has been rather thrilling, when pressed, Orianthi will admit that it sort of pales in comparison to her experience of working with Michael Jackson. After all, that truly was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And while Lambert is great, he hasn’t reached MJ’s legendary status just yet. “Getting to work with him for the three months I did was amazing,” she said of Jackson. “He had such spirit. When he walked in the room, he just had this great presence about him and encouraging, really sweet. [He is] definitely very missed.” What do you think of the Lambert/MJ comparisons? All Time Low Enjoy ‘Bro-in’ Down’ On Bamboozle Roadshow

The band describes the casual attitude of touring with Good Charlotte, Third Eye Blind and others. By Matt Harper All Time Low Photo: MTV News All Time Low are having a pretty good summer. The boys from Baltimore have been spending the last month on the Bamboozle Roadshow, where they’ve met some of their idols, gotten love from their legions of fans and, as the band puts it, done a lot of “bro-in’ down.” ATL took a break from the sweltering heat at the Philadelphia stop of the Roadshow last Sunday to talk to MTV News about the experience of traveling cross-country with Boys Like Girls, LMFAO, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan and Third Eye Blind (among many others). “It’s been great, so much fun,” lead singer Alex Gaskarth gushed. “All the bands have been hanging out, bro-in’ down, as they say.” Summer festivals in America are typically dominated by one-off weekend shows, like Bonnaroo, Coachella and Lollapalooza, but a travelling show like this one creates a uniquely intimate atmosphere that the ATL guys have enjoyed. “It’s festival style, so it feels like a shrunken version of the Warp Tour almost,” Gaskarth said. Lead guitarist Jack Barakat cut in, “It’s weird, ’cause if we don’t hang out, [Third Eye Blind frontman] Stephan Jenkins gets really mad and starts yelling.” The consensus all around is that what makes this tour so much fun is the casual attitude all the headlining bands share. When asked about who’s made an impact on them so far this tour, Alex was quick to answer, “The Good Charlotte guys throughout the tour have been awesome to us.” Barakat agreed, saying the Madden brothers “have been like our fathers almost.” “Our big brothers,” Gaskarth countered. Finally, drummer Rian Dawson settled the friendly debate. “Uncles, we’ll call it,” he said. “That’s somewhere in between brother and father.” Whatever the relationship between the bands, it’s clear that All Time Low are having a blast on the tour. MTV News will be hitting the Bamboozle Roadshow again this week, so check back in for more from your favorite bands on the tour. What’s the best show you’ve seen this summer? ‘New Blink-182 Music Is On The Way,’ Mark Hoppus Promises

Bassist also apologized for confusion over a new track being premiered. By James Montgomery Mark Hoppus Photo: Christopher Polk/ WireImage Monday’s “exciting” Blink-182 news turned out to be an announcement that the group will headline KROQ’s Epicenter festival in September, (link so on Tuesday, Mark Hoppus decided to up the ante, taking to his blog to break a genuinely exciting bit of news. “Blink-182 is full-steam ahead!” Hoppus wrote. “In June and July we will be at the rehearsal spot, getting ready for the European tour this summer, and writing new songs. Michael Jackson Left Behind A Legacy Of Unfinished Projects

A year after his death, we’ve seen ‘This Is It’ and heard the leaked songs, but where’s that robot hotel? By Gil Kaufman Michael Jackson Photo: Getty Images In the twilight of his career, Michael Jackson was almost as well known for the projects he never completed as he was for the ones that came to fruition. From the mid-1990s on, fans were frequently tantalized with the promise of movies, theme parks, tours and song collaborations with the day’s hottest music stars that came and went without ever being realized. As the one-year anniversary of Jackson’s death approaches, MTV News is taking a look at the many plans the King of Pop dreamed up before his premature end, some of which are finally becoming reality. Despite more than a decade out of the pop-culture spotlight, Jackson also clearly never stopped having his finger on the pulse of what was going on in music. Lady Gaga recently revealed that Jackson had tapped her to open for his 50-show This Is It stand at the O2 arena in London. “I was actually asked to open for Michael on his tour,” she said. “We were going to open for him at the O2. … And we were working on making it happen. And I suppose there was some talk about the openers doing some duets with Michael onstage.” In fact, one of the choreographers of This Is It said in an interview that not only did Jackson want to have Gaga open for him, he was very interested in recording a song with her before his death. Travis Payne said that after giving Jackson a short list of possible collaborators for his next musical project (including Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Usher and Justin Timberlake), the pop icon suggested Payne check out the then budding superstar Gaga. “He goes, ‘Lady Gaga.’ I go, ‘Really?’ He goes, ‘Yeah.’ He’s the one who really got me to get into her,” Payne recalled. “He literally told me, ‘You gotta get into her. She’s good.’ So, I started listening to her music more and going on YouTube and looking at her performances, and I was like, ‘He’s right.’ ” Jackson was also clearly looking to take his place among the musical icons he most admired and whose sales records he was determined to break during the course of his career. Just like the Beatles and Elvis Presley, Jackson will be immortalized by Cirque du Soleil with a permanent show in Las Vegas and a touring version in 2011, thanks to an agreement with Jackson’s estate. This brings to fruition a long-held dream for Jackson, who was a big fan of the Canadian troupe’s productions and had discussed mounting a show based on his music several years before his death. Jackson always dreamed big , and toward the end of his life, he spent quite a bit of time in Vegas cooking up another abandoned pie-in-the-sky project. In October 2005, just a few months removed from his acquittal on child molestation charges , Jackson began work with fashion designer Andr

Actually, Cyrus has long been a fan of the game, which she said offers her the chance to practice while on the road. “I sat in front of the TV 90 percent of the tour, just playing ‘Rock Band’,” Cyrus confessed to MTV News. “It’s pretty cool that now I can warm up playing my own songs on ‘Rock Band’ and then go do it in real life. No rush to commit to split innings, insists Cricket Australia

• Format review ‘still a work in progress’ • ‘We need to ensure that ideas are practical and acceptable’ Cricket Australia will not rush into finalising its proposed revamp of the domestic one-day game. CA last week announced it would trial a split innings format in the Ford Ranger Cup with the long-term view of introducing it to one-day internationals. But players, including Mike Hussey and Ricky Ponting, said they would rather have the 50-over format retained. The CA chief executive, James Sutherland, said Australian and state players would be given a chance to provide their feedback on split-innings one-day cricket. “We will show players, including those now on the tour of England, the public research,” he said. “Cricket-lovers say that ODI cricket captures the broadest interest of the three formats, and it is supported with strong passion, but it is a game that needs better positioning and a format review if it is to remain popular in the long-term. “There has been a lot of public discussion since the CA board last week approved we go ahead with a format review, but this is still a work in progress. “The idea of split innings was popular with fans and we are keen at this stage to look at a 10 wickets-a-side, split-innings concept to see if it is feasible from public, player, broadcaster and commercial partners’ points of view. “We accept that we need to listen to what the public wants but we also need to be sure that ideas are practical, and most important, are acceptable to world cricket and capable in the long-term of being considered for international cricket.” Ponting, the Australia one-day captain, said he was against moving away from the traditional 50-overs-each match. “Personally, I wouldn’t like to see it go that way. I would like to see it remain as a traditional game of cricket,” he said. Forty wickets in the game, it almost goes away from the game of cricket. “I know Cricket Australia will be talking to the players and all the stakeholders involved in Australian cricket to come up with what they think is going to be the best set of playing conditions for the revamped competition that is going to start in Australia. “That’s where it is at the moment. There’s been a little bit of discussion around our team about that and what are the best playing conditions for the new format, and all that will come out in the wash over the next couple of weeks. As long as the players are well informed and involved in that decision-making then I’m sure the best result will be achieved.” Australia Cricket Team Cricket guardian.co.uk
