Coheed And Cambria Credit ‘Devoted’ Fans For MTV Musical March Madness Win

‘They definitely won us this thing,’ frontman Claudio Sanchez tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Coheed and Cambria Photo: Sony/Getty Images/MTV News When Coheed and Cambria frontman Claudio Sanchez heard his band had won MTV’s Musical March Madness , he reacted in a way most men would when they’ve just won a (fairly) major tournament of champions: He finished cleaning the algae off his deck. “I was cleaning the deck of our house, getting the algae off of it, because we’re about to leave for tour, and my wife came outside, laughing, and said, ‘Oh my God, you guys won, ‘ ” Sanchez told MTV News on Wednesday (April 7). “That was about it. We didn’t really have champagne or anything, but after I’m finished with this interview, I might crack a beer open and sit down to a game of ‘God of War 3.’ ” Yes, it was a pretty raucous celebration at the Sanchez household. But all kidding aside, Sanchez said he and his bandmates were legitimately honored to win MTV’s inaugural tournament — especially because it was their rabid fanbase that led them to victory in the first place. “Well, I don’t know what the fanbases are for the other bands, but I know our fanbase is beyond devoted. They let us do the things we do, and they definitely won us this thing,” Sanchez laughed. “I can’t say enough about them. … I mean, at first, I was only kind of following [the tournament] a little bit. My wife told me about it, and I gave it a glance. And I know some of the monitors on Cobalt and Calcium [a Coheed fan site], and they would send me a text message telling me who we were up against. For me, and for all of us, it was mostly about the fans and their dedication to our band.” Sanchez said he would even vote in some of Coheed’s early round matchups (“Oh, I voted for us, of course”), but he never really believed his band had a chance of winning. All that changed when C&C knocked off presumptive favorites Phish in the Sweet 16 . Then they disposed of Alice in Chains in the Elite Eight and headed for a Final Four showdown with Tokio Hotel. Suddenly, everyone in the Coheed camp started paying attention. “When we beat Phish, that’s when I started to notice. I was like, ‘Wow, this is, like, kind of serious.’ And then, I wasn’t really familiar with Tokio Hotel, but our management was like, ‘They’re a big band worldwide,’ ” Sanchez said. “So then I was like, ‘It’s been a good run for us, but maybe this is where we lose out.’ Only, it wasn’t.” And after beating Tokio in the Final Four , they rolled over My Chem in the title game . And at that point, Coheed’s dream run through the tournament was complete: They were the unlikeliest of champions. And now that they’ve won, Sanchez is itching to swing by MTV News’ HQ and pick up the trophy . He hasn’t quite figured out what he’ll do with it just yet, but he’s kicking around a few ideas. “This was a battle for the fans, so I’m trying to figure out a way to share it with them. It was their victory,” he said. “I’m trying to contact the fellow that runs Cobalt and Calcium, because I might present it to him. Or maybe we’ll take it out on tour and let all the fans see it and take pictures with it. Who knows?” What did you think of Coheed’s victory? Did you vote to make them champs? ‘American Idol’ Report Card: Who Aced Lennon/McCartney Night?

Aaron Kelly should face permanent suspension, while Casey James proves he’s learned something. By Eric Ditzian Katie Stevens performs on “American Idol” on Tuesday Photo: FOX Seven weeks into the do-or-die tests that are the “American Idol” live shows, our singing students might finally be getting the hang of things. That’s quite a change from week one, when MTV News wanted to hand nearly all of the contestants a failing grade and shove off for an early summer break. But we stuck around the classroom, and Tuesday night’s John Lennon/Paul McCartney-themed show might have offered the most consistent group of performances this season. Special gold stars go to Crystal Bowersox’s didgeridoo and Lee Dewyze’s bagpipes, both of which added an unexpected world music flavor that had heretofore been missing from the “Idol” curriculum. That’s not to say everyone aced the evening. Mr. Aaron Kelly, we’re looking in your direction. So who’s standing at the head of the class? Whose grades are slipping? Let’s see how everyone measured up with another edition of our “Idol” report card. (And don’t miss Jim Cantiello’s “Idol” recap in the MTV Newsroom. Excellent Casey James : Up until Tuesday night, the 27-year-old’s finest performance of the season was his stripped-down, dude-on-a-stool rendition of Bryan Adams’ “Heaven.” After a few weeks of going the electrified rock-star route, James returned to what worked best for him. During his growly, acoustic take on Lennon’s “Jealous Guy,” James managed the neat trick of being both vulnerable and ferocious. We dug what we heard, and hope James doesn’t wait another few weeks to do something similar. Good Katie Stevens : “Let It Be” is as close to an “Idol” failsafe as there is, and Stevens made good on that potential with some on-point vocals. But others before her on the show — Brooke White and Kris Allen — have killed the song. She merely batted it around a bit, like a kitten in a hot pink Snuggie. Again, it was perfectly lovely, but where does the 17-year-old go from here? Back to the awkward, I’m-a-big-girl-I-swear performances of weeks past? And will she even make it, after two consecutive trips to the bottom three? Michael Lynche : Big Mike’s soul-flecked “Eleanor Rigby” seemed to be the most divisive performance of the evening. Perhaps taking a note from David Cook’s 2008 reworking of the same tune, Lynche opted for a daring arrangement that turned the original’s string quartet into a beefed-up orchestra. Sure it was a tad theatrical, but it was equally entertaining. Crystal Bowersox : The only thing that pulled Mama Sox up into this section of the grading curve was that didgeridoo. It certainly wasn’t that overstuffed arrangement of “Come Together,” which muddled her ever-soulful voice. Still, this is the second straight week that she’s stepped outside her Tracy Chapman-esque singer-songwriter comfort zone. She deserves credit for keeping things fresh. Average Andrew Garcia : If anyone was hoping Garcia had learned a thing or two after his highly praised performance last week — which came on the heels of several in-over-his-head performances — the first notes of “Can’t Buy Me Love” proved otherwise. Call it schlocky, cruise-ship swing. Call it the work of an ear-jangling wedding band that forces you to get drunk just so you can make it to the end of the reception. Just don’t call it a comeback, because Garcia has regressed in a serious way. Despite his copious face time on camera since the start of the season, we fear that, with the likes of Paige Miles and Lacey Brown out of the way, Garcia is in trouble this week. Tim Urban : It’s no doubt condescending — not to mention unfair — to judge Urban on a Tim Curve. But that’s what Randy Jackson did, and it seems the only way to a) assess the kid without being cruel and b) explain how in the world he’s stuck around this long. At least his vocals largely held steady during the performance — a welcome change from previous weeks. Alas, this week will be the same in one key respect: He’s headed, once again, into the bottom three. What happens once “Teflon” Tim gets there is anybody’s guess. Siobhan Magnus : She’s nothing if not unpredictable. Yet we’re beginning to sense a pattern: Magnus hasn’t done too well the last week or two. That take on “Across the Universe” sounded like something left on the cutting room floor of Amy Adams’ “Enchanted”: certainly pleasing to the ear but a tune better kept locked in fantasy land than belted out on the “Idol” stage. It could be a surprise, but Magnus just might be in trouble this week, though her chin-trembling story about her baby sisters may have won her enough votes to avoid the bottom three. Lee Dewyze : Question! What does it say that the only contestants gifted with an outside-the-box instrument were Dewyze and MamaSox? Were they the only two singers who, coincidentally, thought to haul out oddball instruments on the same night? Or do only producers’ darlings get to hire freelance musicians for their performances? Right. In any event, much like Crystal’s turn onstage, the only thing memorable about Dewyze’s performance was his skirt-wearing bagpiper. His “Hey Jude” was perfectly forgettable … and it doesn’t matter at all! As both producers and voters have decided, Dewyze is a front-runner. He’s not going anywhere. Unsatisfactory Aaron Kelly : We think it might be time for Kelly to bow out of this “Idol” class and scamper back to the high school from whence he came. Not only was “The Long and Winding Road” the poorest song choice of the night (it’s a beautiful tune but one not suited to opening a rockin’ live show), but his complete lack of oomph while singing left us so drowsy, we almost didn’t make it to the second commercial. Yet we have a feeling none of this matters in the least. Kelly’s got a solid fanbase that has never let him fall to the dreaded bottom three. Hard to see how last night’s song — no better and no worse than many of his past ones — will change that. How would you grade last night’s “Idol” performances? Give us your report cards in the comments. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ ” American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. MTV’s Musical March Madness: The Champion Is …

Coheed and Cambria upset My Chemical Romance to win MTV’s Band Bracketology crown! By James Montgomery Coheed and Cambria Photo: Sony/Getty Images/MTV News It’s all over but the shouting, and there’s probably going to be a whole lot of that. The title game of MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament is in the books, and in an upset of colossal proportions, 15th-seeded Coheed and Cambria knocked off #5 My Chemical Romance to claim the championship. In a contest that saw more than 120,000 votes cast (from 149 different countries — shout out to our voter in Tajikistan!), C&C did what Butler couldn’t against Duke in Monday night’s NCAA basketball finale, belting heavily favored MCR 67-33 (83,078 votes to 40,290) to win one for underdogs everywhere. And now, their names will be forever etched on the MTV Musical March Madness trophy! It was a fairly convincing victory for the guys in Coheed, but, as is the case with most great match-ups, the championship tilt wasn’t without some controversy. Voting for the finals opened Monday on the Newsroom blog , and though things remained close overnight, C&C surged to a huge lead in the early hours of Tuesday, which raised our suspicions a tad. So we did some digging in our poll software and discovered that some rather overzealous Coheed fans (and, to a lesser extent, some MCR ones too) had employed bots to juice up the polling numbers — seriously, when one IP address votes 4,576 times for Coheed and Cambria, you know something’s amiss. So we plowed through the results, removed any and all suspicious IP addresses, and Coheed was still winning — by a lot. Still, MCR made a late surge, but in the end, C&C’s lead was too insurmountable to overcome. And just to make sure the final results were legit, we did another round of IP pruning Wednesday morning. What can we say? We take our tournament seriously, and would hate to have its legacy ruined by salacious cheaters. But now is not the time to tarnish Coheed’s victory, or the efforts of the 64 other bands — and their fanbases — that voted in the tournament. Thanks to everyone who participated (well, except the bots), and special thanks to Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice — who do bear a striking resemblance Cobra Starship’s Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez — for their genius recap of MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament on Monday. It’s been a blast to watch unfold, and we’re definitely going to do it again next year. Oh, and when we do, we’re pretty sure Coheed will be seeded a lot higher than #15 — that’s just one of the perks of being crowned champion. Congrats guys, enjoy the tickertape parade. And come get your trophy — it’s here, waiting for you! What do you think of Coheed’s big win? Who would you like to see take the crown in next year’s tournament? Let us know in the comments below! Tiger Woods Marked Birth of First Child with Joslyn James Sex Romp

Tiger Woods celebrated the arrival of his first child, daughter Sam Alexis, by secretly meeting up with Joslyn James, according to new reports from … James. Woods flew Joslyn to the first tournament he played after wife Elin Woods gave birth back on June 18, 2007. Tiger announced then that he was taking time off. However, that same week, the golf legend had his best pal and business manager Bryon Bell coordinate a secret rendezvous with Joslyn James! Classy move. Tiger paid for Joslyn James to fly from Seattle to Washington D.C, to meet on the same weekend that he played in the AT&T National in Bethesda, Maryland. Maybe Joslyn just flew in to help with his swing mechanics? Elin Woods did not attend the tournament. Convenient. At a press conference there, Tiger Woods said: “It’s been fantastic to have Sam Alexis part of our life.” “It was a dream come true for Elin, myself and all of our family. We’ve been obviously working a little bit and a lot of late nights, but it’s been a lot of fun.” We’re sure those late nights were fun … with Joslyn . Her Tiger Woods text messages made it abundantly clear what their relationship was like … spanking, choking, golden showers, threesomes and whatnot. Dude was into some sick $h!t. No wonder that despite being just one of many mistresses, Elin Woods is said to be particularly upset about Joslyn James .

Kentucky vs West Virginia: Battle of the Top 2

Only one region in this year’s NCAA Tournament has gone chalk and that’s the East, where No. 1 Kentucky will face No. 2 West Virginia on Saturday night in Syracuse for a trip to the Final Four. Other than a bit of a slow start, Kentucky (35-2, 20-15 ATS) didn’t have much trouble with Cornell on Thursday night in a 62-45 victory. The Cats have yet to have a game this tournament that was decided by less than the 17 points they beat Cornell by. Kentucky hasn’t been in the Final Four since winning its last national title in 1998. West Virginia (30-6, 16-19 ATS) didn’t miss injured starting point guard Darryl “Truck” Bryant too much in its 69-56 over Washington on Thursday (it will Saturday). Kevin Jones stepped up with star Da’Sean Butler having an off night, with Jones scoring 18 points with eight rebounds. WVU committed an uncharacteristic 23 turnovers with different guys now handling the ball – the Mountaineers entered averaging just 11.6 turnovers per game. It was the first time West Virginia had committed more than 20 turnovers in a game this season. If WVU’s turnover problems show up again and Butler doesn’t come up big against Kentucky, then WVU is toast. But the Mountaineers also are playing terrific on defense, not having allowed a team to score 60 points since the end of the regular season. WVU is 13-0 this season when holding a foe under 60. This is the fourth time a Bob Huggins-coached team has reached the Elite Eight, with Hugs going 1-2 in the previous three. Saturday’s game could well come down to rebounding. WVU, which is second in the nation in offensive rebounding, killed Washington on boards and is 25-3 this year when outrebounding its opponent. But with Patrick Patterson, DeMarcus Cousins and Daniel Orton, among others, Kentucky is a very good rebounding team and will have the size advantage in the frontcourt. Surely, this will be an exciting match that will rival the anticipated watching of the UFC 111 live stream that night. We wish both team good luck. Tiger Woods to Return to Golf at the Masters

The world’s embattled top golfer, Tiger Woods, announced today that he’s planning his golf comeback at the year’s first major championship, The Masters, in April. It will mark Woods’ return to golf action for the first time since a 9-iron was wielded by his crazed wife after his many infidelities were exposed Thanksgiving eve. Tiger announced the news on his website: “The Masters is where I won my first major, and I view this tournament with great respect. After a long and necessary time away from the game, I feel like I’m ready to start my season at Augusta.” “The major championships have always been a special focus in my career and I think Augusta is where I need to be, even though it’s been awhile since I last played.” Woods has already started prepping for his return with Ari Fleischer behind the scenes, and briefly alluded to his ongoing rehab and reconciliation with Elin Woods , saying: “I have undergone almost two months of therapy, and am continuing treatment. While I’m returning to competition, I still have a lot of work to do in my personal life.” Tiger, who did not have a return date in his recent press conference , added in today’s post that it became “apparent that the Masters would be the earliest I could play.” “I called both Joe Lewis and Arnold Palmer and expressed regret for not attending the Tavistock Cup and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. I want to thank them for their support. Those are fantastic tournaments I look forward to competing in again. In conclusion, Woods thanked the people ofThe Masters: “I would also like to thank the Augusta National members and staff. I have deep appreciation for everything that they do to create a wonderful event for the benefit of the game.” The Masters begins on April 8. We wouldn’t bet against him .
