Tim Burton ‘Never’ Considered ‘Dark Shadows’ A Comedy

Director also opens up on ‘Beetlejuice’ sequel and whether he’d return to ‘Batman.’ By John Mitchell, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Johnny Depp in “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros Fans of the classic late-’60s soap “Dark Shadows” were surprised when the trailer for the film made it seem like director Tim Burton had reimagined his subject matter as a farcical comedy rather than the dark, Gothic soap opera fans remembered. Since then, there have been whispers that the film is far darker than it is being marketed, so we went straight to the source to find out what is really up with the buzzed-about film. At CinemaCon 2012, MTV News asked Burton if he felt the trailer is reflective of his film, which hits theaters May 11, and while he admits there are humorous elements to the film, he said he doesn’t believe it can be classified as a comedy. “Everything that’s in [the trailer] is in the movie,” Burton told MTV News. “It’s a funny film for me, because I never considered it a comedy. I was always trying to capture the weird vibe of ‘Dark Shadows,’ which is a weird thing to try to capture. It was a weird daytime soap opera.” Burton, a longtime “Shadows” fan who said he “recalls the show affectionately,” said that whatever humor is in the film is there because the situation Barnabas is in when he is unearthed 200 years after being buried is innately humorous. “It’s not like I’m being campy with it or anything,” Burton said. “The guy’s been locked in a box for 200 years, and [when] he comes out … something weird is going to happen.” As for comparisons to his previous films, most notably “Edward Scissorhands,” Burton said he can see the link, but confessed that there are many subtle differences between Barnabas Collins and any other character he’s put onscreen. “Edward Scissorhands was more of a naive character. Barnabas has been around the block a few times,” Burton told MTV News with a laugh. “There is something about a character who doesn’t quite fit into the world, which is similar, just in this case, he’s been around a long time.” Burton also gave us up-to-date news on one project many of his biggest fans are very excited for: “Beetlejuice 2.” The film is being written by “Shadows” scribe Seth Grahame-Smith, and for Burton, that’s as far as things have gotten. “He’s working away on it,” the director said of Grahame-Smith, “so I’m just waiting to see what he does.” As for whether we can expect him to make a return to “Batman,” the film franchise he started with the original 1989 blockbuster, he was straight to the point, saying, “I think I have enough on my plate.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Dark Shadows.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Prometheus,’ Hologram Tupac Proof-Positive Of Nerd-tastic Future

On this week’s ‘Talk Nerdy,’ are the new ‘Prometheus’ viral video and Tupac’s Coachella hologram proof that the future has arrived? By Josh Wigler Michael Fassbender as David 8 in “Prometheus” Photo: Twentieth Century Fox The future is now — just ask Tupac or Michael Fassbender. Earlier in the week, nerd culture scored two big victories: one, the arrival of Hologram Tupac , who performed from beyond the grave at the Coachella music festival. Shortly thereafter came the announcement of David 8 , a new line of androids from Weyland Industries set to launch on the upcoming “Prometheus” voyage. Frankly, both sound like ridiculous sci-fi concepts that could only occur in the far-off future. But one of those things actually happened. Even if you’re not a hip-hop fan, the fact that a walking, talking, swear-slinging Tupac Shakur appeared before Coachella attendees for nearly five full minutes 16 years after his death should illicit an avalanche of geek-gasms. It certainly did for “Talk Nerdy” co-host Eric Ditzian. “Holo-pac is the beginning of something very new,” Ditzian said in Splash Page’s latest Hero of the Week column . “It’s a sci-fi nerd’s dream come true, in a sense — a game-changing technology no longer part of a fictional realm but in our own.” He’s right, of course. For years, we’ve watched men, women and aliens alike appear via holographic image on the bridge of the USS Enterprise, as an urgent message issued through the eternally adorable R2-D2 and so on. Messages from fully formed individuals based in another place, perhaps even in another time, coming our heroes’ way through the inexplicable powers of science fiction. None of that was real, of course, because let’s be serious: Did we ever expect to see these kinds of things happen anywhere other than in Space, the Final Frontier or in the land of a Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far Away? I certainly didn’t. Tupac — with a little help from Dr. Dre and friends — proved me wrong. But it says a lot that even with the newfound discovery of Holo-Pac, I remain equally obsessed, if not more so, with “Prometheus.” Ridley Scott’s first science-fiction film since 1982’s “Blade Runner” is easily my most anticipated film of 2012. That says a lot, considering this is the same year that sees Earth’s mightiest heroes together onscreen for the first time, the same year that Bane might break the Bat on behalf of Christopher Nolan. The first two “Alien” films are permanent fixtures in my otherwise evolving list of all-time favorite movies, but it wasn’t until I saw the David 8 advertisement — a viral video that sees Michael Fassbender’s cybernetic character explain his own capabilities and uses as a robot, eerie and fascinating and beautiful in every sense of those words — coupled with Tupac’s digital return, that I realized why I’m so excited for “Prometheus.” Maybe it’s the power of a good Guy Pearce speech . Or maybe I’ve just binged on one too many geek movies in my day. But I look at the list of achievements accomplished by Pearce’s “Prometheus” character — Sir Peter Weyland, a pioneer in many fields including terraforming and robotics — and I can’t stop thinking that maybe, just maybe, we’re not so far off from having a Broca Dialectical Implant (the first language tool that requires absolutely no learning on the user’s part) or developing faster-than-light space exploration vehicles. No, at the moment, there are no functional hoverboards as promised by the movies, and the Nike Air McFlys do not yet lace themselves up without assistance. And maybe we’ll have to wait a bit longer than 70 years to meet an android with the same emotional depth as David. But right now, we do have a long-deceased music legend performing from beyond the grave via hologram. If we brought Tupac back in 2012, then what can’t we accomplish by 2073? It’s not a robot … but we’re getting pretty damn close. Related Videos Talk Nerdy

You’ll have to pony up $10 come June 29 to find out if his dreams come true, but in the meantime, check out what else your eagle-eyed experts at MTV found noteworthy in the tawdry trailer : Channing Tatum’s Acrobatics Co-star Matt Bomer already warned us about Tatum’s “sick” moves , and of course we’ve seen “Step Up” about 20 times, but it’s easy to forget how adept the Chan-man is on the dance floor, seeing as he’s most frequently cast as an action hero (“G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” “Haywire”) or a romantic lead (“Dear John,” “The Vow”). All we have to say is, get this guy into toe shoes more often, Hollywood! Cody Horn Hits the Scene Tatum’s love interest is likely a new face to many a moviegoer. Her name is Cody Horn, and this could be her big, ballsy breakout role. The actress’ r

WATCH: Channing Tatum, Male Strippers, and Romance in the Magic Mike Trailer — ‘Nuff Said

The more I see of Steven Soderbergh ‘s Magic Mike , the higher it climbs up my most-anticipated list. Here’s why: Shirtless Channing Tatum. Sensitive Channing Tatum. Dancing Channing Tatum! A cute romance with total girl next door Cody Horn. Rihanna on the soundtrack! They found love in a pantsless place, you guys . Watch the full trailer after the jump. Beefcake! Sure, we have no idea how Shirtless Alex Pettyfer or Absent-from-the-Trailer Matt Bomer or Joe Manganiello figure into the plot. And I’m 99 percent sure most male strip clubs don’t have this high a percentage of young, hot lady customers. But I do want to know what Channing has to do for those $20s. Head to Apple for the trailer debut in HD. Verdict: I hereby declare June 29 the official ladies movie night of the summer. Who’s with me?

‘Magic Mike’ Trailer: Five Magical Scenes

We strip down the new sneak peek for the best moments of Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and more. By Kara Warner Channing Tatum in “Magic Mike” Photo: Warner Bros. For those of us who’ve been dying to see “Magic Mike” since it was announced, Christmas came early Wednesday (April 18) in the form of the film’s first official trailer . For months we’ve been obsessing over as many details as we could find — from the first official photos to chance encounters with the cast and their hilarious stories of thong mishaps . And now we finally have two minutes of glorious footage to watch over and over again. Here are the five key scenes in the “Magic Mike” trailer: Classic Cop Routine The trailer opens with Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer knocking on the door of a party, dressed as local police officers. “We keep getting complaints of noise and underage drinking,” Tatum says in a serious tone to the all-female crowd, before pinning one lady against the wall for further questioning. “Everybody sit down because we’re going to be here for a while.” “You don’t have anything sharp on you that I can stick myself with, do you?” “No,” says the girl, anxiously. “Good, because I do,” Tatum says saucily before we hear the telltale ripping noise that means he’s just expertly exited his uniform. Channing Busts a Move Those of us who’ve been following Tatum’s career since his star-making turn in “Step Up” are well aware that the man has moves, and they are on full display in this trailer. We see Tatum working it with a little boy-band choreography, doing some breakdancing, flipping through the air, spinning from the ceiling, etc. It’s all in the name of putting on a good show and stripping down to his skivvies, which we don’t actually see. “You are the husband they never had,” we hear strip-club owner Dallas (Matthew McConaughey) say to Tatum’s Magic Mike in voice-over. “You are that dreamboat guy that never came along.” McConaughey Being McConaughey We are not at all surprised that McConaughey’s character Dallas looks right at home onstage, putting it all out there for a bunch of ladies. “The law says you cannot touch, but I see a lot of lawbreakers out there,” he says to a squealing crowd, wearing nothing but a cowboy hat, a leather vest and blue jeans, all the while flashing that million-dollar grin of his — not to mention the several quick shots of McConaughey in action as part of the male revue, as well as his own stunt as some kind of fire-breather. Introducing Cody Horn Who knew we’d see so much of the female characters in this first spot? The lady who’s front and center is Cody Horn, an up-and-coming actress whose work you might have seen on “The Office.” Horn is introduced as the girl-next-door/sister to Pettyfer’s character, who falls for Mike and attempts to keep him grounded in reality. There are a lot of cute and flirty moments between Horn and Tatum’s characters, and it’s obvious that Horn’s “normal girl” will be the one to eventually convince “Magic Mike” to hang up his stripper shoes and pursue his dreams of going into custom furniture design. Yup, furniture design. Disappointing Amounts Of Bomer And Manganiello We’re not ones to complain or anything, but because we know exactly how many gorgeous men are in this film’s cast, we expected to see a lot more of them in the trailer. There was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot of “True Blood” heartthrob Joe Manganiello hurting his back mid-tease, but it was entirely too short. And where in the heck was blue-eyed cutie Matt Bomer? We’re hoping they’re holding onto the proverbial goods for unveiling in future teasers. Miley Cyrus’ ‘LOL’ Trailer: 5 Key Scenes

Remake of 2008 French film finds Cyrus seeking revenge on a cheating ex-boyfriend. By Fallon Prinzivalli Miley Cyrus in “LOL” Photo: Lionsgate It’s been a long time coming for Miley Cyrus’ remake of the 2008 French film “LOL.” Since the announcement back in 2010 that the film is being distributed by Lionsgate , news on the movie has been lacking. Well, not anymore, Cyrus fans. On Tuesday, the official trailer for the film dropped, which gives fans a preview of what the movie has in store. In a generation that spends more time updating the world about their problems than their families, 17-year-old Lola’s (Cyrus) status is constantly changing. As an attempt to get back at her — now ex — boyfriend Chad for cheating on her with Ashley ( Ashley Greene ), Lola starts seeing his best friend, Kyle ( Douglas Booth ). Her life begins to spiral downward as her grades drop while she experiments with drugs and sex, and a divorce has her mom completely oblivious to it all. Soon she starts to fall for Kyle and things get even more complicated. The trailer is a great peek at the teen drama, and we have the five key scenes from it. EX -Boyfriend The trailer begins with Lola’s voice over: “Every year it’s weird going back to school, but here we are just going with the flow, trying to love and laugh out loud.” She abruptly stops laughing when she calls out Chad on not texting her throughout the summer and he admits he hooked up with Lola’s rival Ashley. She acts like she doesn’t care, but as soon as she enters her room she begins crying on her bed. This emotional scene that sets up the rest of the trailer. A New Beginning Lola quickly gets over her failed romance as she begins hanging out with Chad’s best friend Kyle. A montage begins of their new friendship as they share a lollipop, rock out on an air guitar and come this close to kissing by his car. Everything is even more wonderful when he tells her, “You’re amazing.” We imagine audiences will quickly become fans of Booth. “I can’t believe I ever dated you!” But the puppy love comes to a halt when Lola begins her sexual awakening. It seems rumors begin circulating when Chad says to Lola in the school courtyard, “Now that you’re giving it up I figured maybe I could get some.” The next scene shows Lola lashing out and pushing him into a gate screaming, “I can’t believe I ever dated you!” The trailer isn’t clear on what exactly causes the outburst, but we’re betting it’s pretty bad judging by Lola’s reaction. Trouble In Paradise? As it turns out, Chad’s comment is just the beginning of situations that spiral out of Lola’s control. The next few scenes show a fight with her mom about her grades dropping and a drunken make-out session with Kyle. Her life gets even worse as she witnesses Kyle walking with his arm around Ashley. When she confronts him about it, he denies it and she spits out, “You’re disgusting.” But we already knew Greene’s character would cause a stir when Demi Moore told MTV News “she’s really saucy.” “Status can change, but true love remains the same.” Throughout the next montage of scenes, we see “status can change, but true love remains the same” typed out across the screen as Kyle dedicates a song to Lola and she makes up with her mom. Finally, as a smiling Kyle rests his head on an equally happy Lola, the trailer leaves us with the feeling that despite the craziness of high school, everything will work out for Lola in the end. After all, she did say she just goes with the flow and high school is only the beginning. Are you planning on seeing “LOL” in theaters? Leave your comment below!
