Based on the full trailer for The Smurfs , I’m guessing that Shrek 2 and Daddy Daycare writers J. David Stern and David N. Weiss scored the most coveted writing gig in Hollywood. At points in the script where most writers may have paced back and forth for hours, struggling for the right words, this team could simply just fill in any blank with the word “smurf.” In just under two minutes, the word is used in four different contexts, only two of which I understood. But will this movie go all the way?
I was one of the few who wasn’t totally enamored with the Super 8 Superbowl spot , which felt rushed and uneven to me. Knowing full-well that my minority opinion probably caused J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg no grief whatsoever, I’d still like to go ahead and formally apologize, because this new full length trailer is phenomenal.
I usually avoid trailers for martial arts film altogether because, let’s face it, it’s not too hard to make even the worse film in this genre look mind-blowing and cool in an two-minute trailer. And while the fight choreography in Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zen indeed looks awesome, I was struck more by the chaotic opening war scene and the gorgeous period detail here, both of which set this one way ahead of the pack. At least as far as trailers go. Also, the director of Infernal Affairs , the original Hong Kong version of The Departed , is in charge here, so maybe we can expect a fun, convoluted narrative to compliment the action?
After getting over the initial shock of seeing the amazing/terrifying Black Swan parody poster for Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family , you may have found yourself asking: “How will the movie possibly live up to that ?” I still don’t have a good answer to that, but can happily report that the trailer is every bit as ridiculous as the poster. I’m talking about a full-on Kareoke sing-along to a Madea single (“MA to the DEA “) and enough split-screen to embarrass Brian de Palma.
After all of the trailers for movies featuring werewolves, a priest battling evil unleashed from the Stygian depths of some CGI master hard drive and Seth Rogen as an alien, the poor, mild-mannered scare picture The Roommate didn’t stand a chance. Sensation exhaustion had set. Even the flirty-eyed Aly Michalka, laboring mightily to conceal the curly haired flair she displays on Hellcats , can’t save the meekness that is Roommate . It’s the kind of live-action sub-mediocrity that usually comes with 3-D glasses. And the only fear this movie will inspire is when you realize the goggles being passed out at the ticket counter are for the far luckier patrons of Sanctum .
The trailer for the Spanish submission to the Oscars Even the Rain brings up an interesting dilemma. In theory, it’s great to make films with a social conscience that inform a wider audience about historical and global injustice, but what happens when you have to bow to exploitation just to get the film made? In this film, Gael García Bernal plays a director making a film about Christopher Columbus’ imperialism who realizes he may need to turn a blind eye to modern day exploitation in order to complete the movie. Tense revolutionary violence and pensive hillside contemplation ensue.

Unfair as it may be, it’s often hard to get excited about movies that take place entirely in one or two rooms while two characters have it out verbally. That said, if you’re going to stick two actors in a room and film them, you could do a lot worse than Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson. A source play by Cormac McCarthy ( No Country for Old Men , The Road ) doesn’t hurt either. For proof, just check out the totally riveting full length trailer for the Jones-directed HBO movie The Sunset Limited .
In the wake of all those crazy-making I Melt With You teasers , what we really need from our Sundance previews right now is a vessel for some good old-fashioned character and story. The trailer for Perfect Sense , a festival premiere starring Ewan McGregor and Eva Green and directed by David Mackenzie, is not that vessel.
