‘Immortals’ actor talks to MTV News at WonderCon in his first on-camera interview since being cast as the Man of Steel. By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Henry Cavill at WonderCon 2011 Photo: Getty Images In his first on-camera interview since being cast as Superman in Zack Snyder’s reboot, the new Man of Steel, actor Henry Cavill, chatted about everything from his research for the part to what it will be like working with his Lois Lane, Amy Adams . MTV News caught up with Cavill at WonderCon 2011, where he was promoting his upcoming film “Immortals,” in which he plays a Greek warrior. Turns out Cavill won’t be able to take much of a break after such a daunting role, as he’ll soon gear up to wear Superman’s iconic cape. Cavill said the training for “Superman” will be a “similar kind of thing” to that of “Immortals,” adding, “It’s going to be intense.” Still, it’s not just the physical aspect Cavill will have to focus on: He’ll also have to slip into the psyche of the complex superhero for the tentatively titled “Superman: Man of Steel.” Cavil said he’s done “plenty of comic book research” in order to gather as much information as he can “as to who this man is.” The star explained that by reading the “Superman” comics, he’ll pick up on the “key characteristics” in order to get “a general idea of what he is, and then working from there.” Cavill also opened up about why it was important to stay true to the iconic character, even with Snyder’s new, modern twist. “Superman is Superman, after all. There’s only so much of a change you can make to that,” he said. As he continues to map out how to play the role, he’s already got his leading lady, Amy Adams, lined up and ready to go. It was confirmed a week ago that Adams, fresh off her Best Supporting Actress Oscar nod for “The Fighter,” would play Superman’s love interest, Lois Lane. Cavill, who revealed he’d met with Adams for a screen test, said he was “looking forward to working with” her, calling his newly announced co-star a “fantastic actress, very talented.” He isn’t the only one who’s excited about having Adams tackle the iconic female role. Snyder called her “one of the most versatile and respected actresses in films today,” while Margot Kidder , the original Lois Lane, gushed, “She’s a brilliant, wonderful actress! She’s incredible. She’s an extraordinarily accomplished young lady — and gorgeous and full of energy and spirit. She’s so different from part to part, it’s going to be really interesting to see what she does with Lois.” Cavill noted that the age difference between he and Adams (he’s 27, she’s 36) was nothing more than happenstance, saying that making the nine-year difference part of the story line would be for Snyder to decide. Cavill said of the age gap: “I don’t think it matters at all.” Regarding those who argue Adams is too old to star opposite Cavill, Kidder said, “Who cares? What a bizarre thing to be concerned about. She certainly doesn’t look older than him.” Do you think Amy Adams will make a good Lois Lane? Sound off below! Our tournament begins March 14, but Coheed and Cambria are already gearing up for another championship. By James Montgomery Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria Photo: Jay West/ WireImage In 2010, Coheed and Cambria entered MTV’s Musical March Madness as an unheralded 15 seed and quickly rattled off a series of startling upsets — against #2 seed Paramore, #10 Mastodon, #6 Phish and #13 Alice in Chains — to advance to the final four, where they outlasted Tokio Hotel in an epochal (and, some might say, fishy) battle to reach the MMM championship game . And in that championship matchup, they outlasted a game My Chemical Romance to claim the MMM trophy .
Vanessa Hudgens tells the latest issue of Details that she and Zac Efron are “still friends.” Despite their shocking split two months ago, the actress won’t even rule out a reconciliation, saying: “Who knows what the future will bring. We’re figuring things out.” If that’s the case, Hudgens sends a clear message to Efron – who got very cozy last week with Teresa Palmer – in the following pictorial: Come hither… Elsewhere in the interview, Hudgens touched on her training for Sucker Punch , her growth as a person and her preparation for this spread: On the photos above : “I can’t tell you how much time is spent putting oil on my chest. And Evian. Spraying Evian bottles on my chest and my arms and my forehead, but mostly my chest.” On preparing for her role in Sucker Punch : “We trained with Navy Seals. We were machines. You could not fuck with us. On coming out of a shell : “Slowly, I’ve gained balls. I used to be very shy.”
‘I really wanted to put in the work,’ he tells MTV News on the Golden Globes red carpet. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Zac Efron Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images We’re sure fans of Zac Efron won’t mind seeing him all muscled up for his next film, “The Lucky One,” based on the Nicholas Sparks book of the same name. Not only did Efron get buffed up for the role , but he also shaved off his signature locks to play a marine who, after three tours in Iraq, returns home to North Carolina to look for the unknown woman he believes was his good-luck charm while he was fighting in the war abroad. “It was hard, man,” Efron recalled about his training for the film when he spoke to MTV News on the Golden Globes red carpet Sunday night (January 16). “I knew that the second I went to Camp Pendleton and met these real marines, I didn’t have that presence.” So what kind of presence did Efron have to achieve in order to play Logan Thibault in the Scott Hicks-directed film, set for 2012 release? “They’ve got this way about them, but they’re, like, 50 pounds heavier, so I started training immediately to do the best I could,” he explained. ” ‘Cause it’s a kind of sensitive part. I care too much about it to let it slide. I really wanted to put in the work.” The film follows in the more serious direction Efron has been taking in his roles as of late. Last year, he starred in “Charlie St. Cloud,” but he will return to the world of romantic comedies when he stars in the ensemble rom-com “New Year’s Eve” in December. Online sneak peeks tease Ludacris-starring video: ‘It’s a little out there.’ By Jocelyn Vena Enrique Iglesias (file) Photo: Kevin Winter/ AMA2010/ Getty Images Enrique Iglesias is following up his 2010 hit “I Like It” with another sexy dance track, “Tonight.” While this song’s a bit more forward than his previous one — boasting the lyric, “Tonight, I’m f—ing you” — it is just as party-ready. And though the song may leave some listeners blushing, Iglesias says he wasn’t trying to shock anyone. “I was asked by a bunch of journalists, ‘Was it a shock factor that you wanted to create?’ And I honestly told them, it truly wasn’t about that,” he explained to MTV News. “I love the song. I loved the melody. I loved the beat. I thought it was unique. Look, how many adults go out at night or go to the club and that goes through their head, but they would never have the guts to say it?” Regarding the song being a bit sexier than fans may be used to hearing from the singer, he laughed, replying, “I’m a little more religious, right?” Iglesias joked that he got Ludacris on the track to displace some of the blame he might get from the song’s raunchy content. “I loved his work. I think he’s one of those artists that every single feature I’ve heard of his, it’s always a perfect 10. He’s always dead on,” Iglesias explained. “I played it for him, and I wanted to see what his reaction would be like, so when I played it for him he immediately called me back and was like, ‘Man, I’m on this.’ This is exactly what he said: ‘This is my kind of sh–.’ ” The guys will be teasing the “Tonight” video , set to debut in early 2011, with online sneak peeks. The video was shot over four days in Cabo, Mexico and Los Angeles. Iglesias explains that it’s going to be “a little more cinematic, a little more of a long story. You get a little bit of acting on Luda’s part. I was a little afraid: It’s a tough song. What type of video do you make? What do you do?” So what did they do? “It’s stylized, and it’s not so ‘in your face,’ ” he explained. “I don’t know how to explain it. When I saw the video, it didn’t feel offensive. Although I saw the video and it’s a little out there, but I loved it. It’s almost like the guys’ fantasy. That’s what we wanted to create.” Luda is the only one doing the acting in the video, and Iglesias, who will be kicking off his 2011 live shows February 5 at Madison Square Garden, has a very good reason for that. “I was there when he was shooting, but in this video, it wasn’t about us being together in the video. I wanted to separate his part,” he said. “But it was great, and I think he’s one of those guys — he’s so charismatic. I wanted to get a little bit of his acting skills in there because he’s a great actor. I’m trying to be as laid-back as possible.” Are you a fan of “Tonight’? The ‘Gossip Girl’ star says she has a ‘newfound appreciation’ for country music after working on the film. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Leighton Meester in “Country Strong” Photo: Sony Pictures Although three of the four big names in “Country Strong” are not, in fact, country singers, they took their training very seriously in order to get in touch with their inner Southern twang. And not only that, when MTV News caught up with Leighton Meester recently — who plays beauty queen-turned-aspiring country artist Chiles Stanton in the flick — she revealed that the filmmakers made sure that each actor was set up with their own music producer in order to fully perfect their singing. “I think it was really surprising how everything kind of came together,” Meester said of her country-music training. “Each of us got our own producers to work with and mine [Nathan Chapman], he works very closely with Taylor Swift, which is sort of similar, in the same vein of the music that I’m making in the movie.
‘I just really wanted to make a video that captures line by line what it is I’m talking about on the record,’ soul singer tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe Raheem DeVaughn Photo: Ray Tamarra/ Getty Images While many of the 2011 Grammy nominees were celebrating their nods, soul singer Raheem DeVaughn was stirring up Web controversy. The Washington, D.C., crooner dropped the visual for his Jackin’ 4 Beats mixtape cut “She’s Single” a day before the Recording Academy recognized his third album, “The Love & War MasterPeace,” with a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album. DeVaughn also said he dropped the joint a day before World AIDS Day and featured a plug for Magnum condoms to bring attention to the issue of sex. However, for many, the accolade and the activism were eclipsed by the sexed-up clip, which features DeVaughn engaging in some acrobatic bedroom moves with a lady friend. When MTV News caught up with the singer via phone recently, he explained that the video, which became a trending topic on Twitter, wasn’t crafted to be overly racy, but rather reflects DeVaughn’s creative space at the moment. “I’ve shown my soul in so many other different lights. I’m in a real sexy mode right now, grown-man sexy,” he said. “That’s really just what I wanted to capture. I wanted to really make a video that captures line by line what it is I’m talking about on the record.” In order to embody the baby-making vibe of the song, the video must feature imagery that rivals lyrics like, “I’ll let you ride it like Ferrari,” and “I hit it, hit it, hit it like a hockey stick.” And the “Customer” singer did not hold back with the accompanying visual, packing the clip with crimson-lit scenes of DeVaughn consorting in the nude with a woman who’s stepping out on her man. However, DeVaughn doesn’t consider the video a raunch-fest, but rather an honest portrait of what goes down between consenting adults who want to indulge privately in a steamy romp. “I wouldn’t necessarily call it raunchy,” he said.” I think it’s more tasteful. If that’s the word cats choose to run with it, I’ve seen a lot more raunchy stuff than that. It ain’t like I’m poppin’ off with the m

Marvel’s next great superhero lays a smackdown in brand-new clip with a fearsome Chris Hemsworth in title role. By Josh Wigler A scene from “Thor” Photo: Marvel A bearded man in a blue shirt sits silently in a holding room as a man identified as Agent Paul Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D. interrogates him. “It’s not easy to do what you did,” says Coulson, who has apprehended the man only after he disarms several of the official’s fellow agents. “You made my men look like a bunch of minimum-wage mall cops. That’s hurtful. Would you like to tell me where you received your training? Afghanistan? Chechnya? Who are you? ” With just a single look, the man answers Coulson’s question, and that of comic book movie enthusiasts everywhere. The man is Thor, and come May 2011, you’ll know his name well. On Friday (December 10), Marvel Studios and Yahoo! Movies released the first official trailer for “Thor,” director Kenneth Branagh’s forthcoming adaptation of the classic comic book character’s story. Chris Hemsworth stars in the title role alongside an impressive cast that includes Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins and Kat Dennings. In “Thor,” our hero hails from Asgard, a faraway, mystical land filled with deadly warriors, powerful sorcerers and other forms of danger. Thor himself is a brave and courageous warrior, but an arrogant one as well. After his reckless behavior reignites an ancient Asgardian feud, Thor is cast out of his homeland by its ruler, his father Odin (Hopkins), and forced to live on Earth to learn a lesson in humility. But when he lands in mortal territory, Thor gets more than he bargained for in the form of Jane Foster (Portman), a beautiful young scientist with an instant connection to the valiant warrior. Soon, a terrible Asgardian force threatens to destroy Earth, and it’s up to Thor to save the day and prevent both of these worlds from utter annihilation. The official trailer — showcasing much of the same footage that Comic-Con attendees saw over the summer — highlights the film’s several action sequences, including a battle between Thor and the Destroyer, an enchanted suit-of-armor hell-bent on destroying the Thunder God. But it’s the character work that has our interest piqued: Not only do Portman and the rest of the supporting cast look superb, but Hemsworth positively exudes the godly charm one needs to play Thor. After seeing this trailer, Robert Downey Jr. might want to watch his back, because Iron Man officially has some competition in the coolest superhero contest! “Thor” arrives in theaters on May 20, 2011.
