Boston Bomber’s Pals Covered For Their Friend According to The NY Post Two pals of the surviving Boston Marathon bomber allegedly covered up for their friend by tossing a backpack filled with spent fireworks used in the attack, authorities said today. Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakov, both 19, were charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice for allegedly blocking the investigation into their terrorist buddy, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. A third defendant, Robel Phillipos, 19, was charged with lying to authorities. “Kadyrbayev knew when he saw the empty fireworks that Tsarnaev was involved in the Marathon bombing,” according to the complaint. “[He] decided to remove the backpack from the room in order to help his friend Tsarnaev avoid trouble.” The pals also grabbed his laptop, Cieplik wrote. Kadyrbayev, with the consent of Tazhayakov and Phillipos, later tossed the backpack in a trash bag and then in a dumpster near his New Bedford apartment, the FBI said. “According to Kadyrbayev, they then collectively decided to throw the backpack and fireworks into the trash because they did not want Tsarnaev to get in trouble,” the complaint charged. All three defendants were schoolmates of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. They’re being held in custody until a May 14 hearing. Kadyrbayev ‘s lawyer Robert Stahl said his client has been cooperating with the FBI. Kadyrbayev directed investigators to the trash dumpster where he ditched the backpack, helping feds eventually find it in a landfill. “Mr. Kadyrbayev told the FBI about that [where to find the backpack],” Stahl said. The lawyer insisted his client was not trying to cover for Tsarnaev. Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov face up to five years in prison while Phillipos could get eight years behind bars. They all could be slapped with fines up to $250,000. At least they cooperated with authorities. That is probably the only chance they have of getting through this. AP
