Hopefully this one will work out for Halle: French actor and heartthrob Olivier Martinez is in town to promote his new restaurant, Villa Azur, which opened last night on South Beach. While Halle Berry may or may not be on hand for the opening, Martinez finally confirmed their engagement rumors once and for all with a simple “Yes, of course it’s true.” But there is another rumor he’s not so keen on. “There is a jeweler taking credit for doing the ring and it’s a lie! They have nothing to do with this,” he said. Indeed he was most displeased with not only the quality of this line itself, but their attempt to falsely capitalize on the couple’s engagement. For those yearning to know, the ring was actually designed by Robert Mazlo, a jeweler from the actor’s chic Saint-Germain-des-Pres neighborhood in Paris. According to Martinez, Mazlo is “a real artist,” whose family has been designing jewelry for “kings and queens for many centuries.” Source WENN More On Bossip! Married to 2 women… AT THE SAME DAMN TIME! Facebook ’s automatic efforts to connect users through “friends” they may know recently led two Washington women to find out they were married to the same man, at the same time: Corrections officer Alan L. O’Neill, is being slapped with bigamy charges. According to charging documents filed Thursday, O’Neill married a woman in 2001, moved out in 2009, changed his name and remarried without divorcing her. The first wife first noticed O’Neill had moved on to another woman when Facebook suggested the friendship connection to wife No. 2 under the “People You May Know” feature. “Wife No. 1 went to wife No. 2’s page and saw a picture of her and her husband with a wedding cake,” Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist told The Associated Press. Wife No. 1 then called the defendant’s mother. “An hour later the defendant arrived at (Wife No. 1’s) apartment, and she asked him several times if they were divorced,” court records show. “The defendant said, ‘No, we are still married.’” Neither O’Neill nor his first wife had filed for divorce, according to charging documents. The name change came in December, and later that month he married his second wife. O’Neill allegedly told wife No. 1 not to tell anybody about his dual marriages, that he would fix it, the documents state. But wife No. 1 alerted authorities. “Facebook is now a place where people discover things about each other they end up reporting to law enforcement,” Lindquist said. If you’re going to do dirt, be smart enough to keep it off your favorite social networking site. Source More On Bossip! Eff A Traveler’s Digest: 10 Countries With Beautiful BLACK Women Action! UC Berkeley on Saturday was once again the crucible of the free speech debate. The birthplace of the Free Speech Movement in the 1960s hosted another iconoclast from the era, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, whose speeches and writings have been denounced by critics for decades as bigoted, homophobic and anti-Semitic. Farrakhan was invited as a speaker for the ninth annual Afrikan Black Coalition Conference organized by the Black Student Union, and his appearance was denounced by other student groups and the subject of an online petition “opposing his hateful words and character” that garnered about 350 signatories. At least two opinion pieces authored by student leaders denouncing Farrakhan’s appearance were published in the campus newspaper, the Daily Californian, including one by Shawn Lewis, president of the Berkeley College Republicans, who wondered where was Chancellor Robert Birgeneau’s condemnation of Farrakhan after the chancellor and others were quick to denounce as racist the college Republicans “Increase Diversity Bake Sale” last September to protest affirmative action-type policies. Even UC President Mark Yudof weighed in on the Farrakhan appearance, writing in an open letter that “we cannot as a society allow what we regard as vile speech to lead us to abandon the cherished value of free speech.” But that only required that people “condemn these merchants of hatred when they come into our community,” Yudof wrote. There were no protesters outside Wheeler Auditorium before Farrakhan’s speech, and only one after. That was Noah Ickowitz, a student senator who said Farrakhan had every right to appear on campus, and Ickowitz had every right to protest a speech he said advocated black empowerment at the expense of other groups. The Nation of Islam leader seemed to relish the controversy, telling the young crowd in the nearly full 700-seat auditorium that opposition to him addressing them was simply a sign of decades of slave-master mentality by white America. “To those who dare, who arrogantly thought that they could frighten this generation as they used to frighten our parents … so I ask you, ‘What are you afraid of?’ ” Farrakhan said. “What is it I might say to your students, or your slaves?” It was a theme he returned to on several occasions in a wandering speech that lasted about two hours and ran from foreign policy to the failings of an education system he said was designed to prevent young African Americans from becoming a threat to white dominance. Sadalia King, a 23-year-old UC Davis student, said she had come to hear the 78-year-old Farrakhan to witness someone she has studied. “Knowing he’s a controversial figure, I knew he was going to say something,” said King, adding that she sympathized with those who opposed his appearance. “I think there’s a generation gap … Just like your grandparents. You know they might say something a little crazy, but you’re still going to love and respect and appreciate them.” Source More On Bossip! This lady had it all the way poppin at Rikers. SMH: A former city Corrections officer will likely end up behind bars after she admitted Thursday to having sex with an inmate and selling Ecstasy, cigarettes and booze while she worked on Rikers Island, officials said. Clara Espada, 41, pleaded guilty to third-degree bribe receiving — a D-class felony — and misdemeanor forcible touching. A criminal complaint says Espada had sex three times with a male inmate, who has not been named. He told investigators he slept with the officer and helped broker deals that netted the woman nearly $300 a week over four months, court documents show. Espada was arrested Wednesday after an eight-month investigation , the Department of Investigation said. The crimes were committed in the George Motchan Detention Center between July 2009 and January 2010, while Espada — who has worked for the Corrections Department since December 2004 — was earning a $76,488 salary. She was restricted from inmate contact and placed on modified duty in June 2011 when the investigation first began, according to the DOI. “Arrest, prosecution, jail time, and the loss of a valuable city job is the likely end for any correction officer who receives bribes to transport contraband into the city jails,” DOI Commissioner Rose Gill Hearn said. Under the plea deal, Espada — who resigned from her Corrections post earlier this month — is expected to be sentenced to six months behind bars followed by three years probation, the DOI said. “Mo’ money, mo’ problems” seems to be the theme today Touchdown-machine Santonio Holmes better not get too attached to his giant new paycheck from the Jets because TMZ has learned, a woman he knocked up back in 2002 wants a fat raise … in child support: Just months after Holmes signed a 5-year deal with the Jets worth nearly $50 million, a woman named Nicole King has filed a petition in Florida for child support modification … demanding way more money from the star wide receiver. King cites Holmes’ new contract in the docs — claiming, “There has been a substantial change in circumstances in that [Holmes’] income has substantially increased since the entry of the final judgment and the needs to the child have increased.” King doesn’t specify how much extra cash she wants now that Holmes is rolling in more dough than ever — but according to the current child support order, Holmes is already required to pay the woman $4,000 a month … and even buy her a house. Pity Holmes can’t also buy his team’s way into the playoffs. More On Bossip! Eff A Traveler’s Digest: 10 Countries With Beautiful BLACK Women Action! Ok, so maybe Jimmy-hats have suffered from inflation a bit, but damn! A man was shot and killed Friday night after an apparent dispute over the price of condoms at a Detroit gas station. WWJ’s Beth Fisher spoke to an employee at the BP gas station on Fenkell and Meyers, where the shooting took place on the city’s westside overnight. The employee said the argument was apparently over the price of a box of condoms. He said the customer bought a box of condoms, but made a comment that he was overcharged and could have bought them somewhere else for a cheaper price. After being told he couldn’t get a refund, the customer allegedly began tossing items off the shelves. That’s when, according to the employee, the overnight clerk came out with a gun and fired a warning shot, which struck the customer in the shoulder. Police say the customer was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. Ron Scott, with the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality, said they are working on conflict resolution between gas station owners and Detroiters, something they will be discussing at a meeting on Sunday. “We can’t have this kind of attitude and this kind of disrespect for life. Whether it happens to people who work in the gas station or definitely if it happens to people in the community. From what I’m understanding, the price of a condom should not be somebody’s life,” said Scott. Police say the store clerk, whose name has not been released, is in custody. An investigation is ongoing. R.I.P. sir… Image via WWJ Detroit Source More On Bossip! Eff A Traveler’s Digest: 10 Countries With Beautiful BLACK Women Action! When God said “Let there be light” we don’t think THIS is what he was talking about The Rev. Pat Robertson says America should legalize marijuana. Would Jesus agree? Msnbc.com put that question to a few theologians and religion experts, and the answer is … decidedly hazy. Robertson, the outspoken Christian evangelist and host of “The 700 Club,” made national headlines this week when he told The New York Times that pot should be decriminalized and treated like alcohol because the government’s war on drugs has failed miserably and is costing taxpayers billions of dollars. “I’ve never used marijuana and I don’t intend to, but it’s just one of those things that I think: this war on drugs just hasn’t succeeded,” he told the newspaper. Scholars disagree on whether the Bible lays down the law on use of mind-altering drugs such as marijuana, also known as cannabis. “It’s not so simple that you can just go to the Scriptures and say, ‘Hey, that (passage) says marijuana should be illegal,’ or ‘that says marijuana should be legal.’ There is no such passage,” says Father Thomas Reese, S.J., senior fellow at Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University. Some pro-pot Christians refer to Genesis 1:29 and interpret it to mean God does not frown on ingesting plants such as marijuana: And God said, Behold, I have given you every plant bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, which has seed in its fruit; to you it shall be for food. Are You El Lee!!! Ja Rule’s birthday only comes once every four years (he was born on Leap Day) so it’s important for him to celebrate it. One problem, some of his activities may land him in big doody. For this birthday, Ja was in jail and he had to follow certain rules. Those rules include not doing press while locked away. Ja, though, violated this rule by giving two radio interviews to help promote his wildly successful (*cough*) new album release Pain Is Love II that came out on his bday. Now, he’s apparently got some issues on his record and it may hurt some of his “good behavior” hopes. Damn…all of that just to promote an album that sold 3,000 copies? Probably wasn’t worth it. Seriously though??? Taylor Armstrong revealed in her memoir that her late husband, Russell, tried to drown her in a swimming pool along with two unnamed friends, and RadarOnline.com has exclusively learned their identities and confirmed that a police report was in fact filed. Jennifur Diamond and her husband at the time, Mark Alsentzer, were at Taylor and Russell’s home several years ago when he flew into a rage and badly injured Mark, but no one pressed charges because Taylor begged her BFF Jennifur not to, and both she and Mark agreed. According to Taylor’s book, Russell pretended he had left the group but was really listening to their conversation and after hearing Taylor say, “Just take care of Kennedy if anything happens,” Russell allegedly jumped out of the bushes and confronted her. “Russell was in a frenzy, and he had a wild look in his eyes. He hit Mark, and threw Jennifur, her dog and Taylor in the swimming pool and tried to drown Taylor. Taylor thought she was going to die as Russell held her under the water,” a source exclusively told RadarOnline.com. “Mark and Jennifur were able to pull Russell off of her and probably saved her life. The cops were called and a police report was filed. At that point Taylor hadn’t been receiving any therapy, and she begged and pleaded with her friends not to press charges. “Taylor had to cover her neck for several weeks because of the choke marks. She even had trouble speaking because of Russell’s strength when he tried to choke her.” Russell definitely had some loose screws, but he wasn’t about that “go-to-jail” life. “Mark got 16 stitches and had work done on his teeth because of what Russell did,” the insider said. “I can’t be sure that Russell gave them money to stay quiet, but he definitely gave them money to cover the expenses of Mark’s medical stuff which was somewhere around $12,000.” And although no charges were pressed, the incident created a temporary rift between Taylor and Jennifur, who refused to protect Taylor any longer when Russell got violent. “Jennifur was really, really upset and said that she couldn’t talk to Taylor anymore because the abusive situation was too much. They tried to get Taylor to leave Russell, but she didn’t want to give up her lifestyle,” the source said. This story just makes Taylor look even worse if you ask us.
