Jay-Z rapped, “More money, more problems/Gotta move carefully.” He hasn’t been taking Biggie’s his own advice. The Brooklyn hip-hop mogul is facing a lawsuit brought on by the Workers Compensation Board of New York. According to TMZ , Jay failed to pay the insurance over a three month period in 2009. The insurance covers his domestic employees like his driver, maids, and cooks. In a response, the rapper claims to have never skipped a payment and the whole situation was brought on by a clerical error. Jay-Z better straighten this out before one of those chefs decides to cook his food with special ingredients like Octavia Spencer did in The Help . ATL rapper Yung Joc is denying allegations that he played a role in the robbery of his own studio. As we previously reported, Joc’s northwest Atlanta recording studio was robbed earlier this month. Joc’s brother and his brother’s girlfriend were in the studio at the time of the robbery and were bound with duct tape and forced into a bathroom while the thieves robbed the studio of over $70,000 of equipment. In an interview with WSB-TV, Joc denied rumors that he played a role in the robbery in order to collect insurance. Joc stated that he was actually in the process of choosing an insurance provider at the time of the robbery. He also said he lost songs that he had recorded with artists like Lil Wayne , Jazmine Sullivan and Pitbull. Fab rounds out his There Is No Competition mixtape series with third installment, in Mixtape Daily . By Rob Markman Fabolous Photo: MTV News Main Pick Headliners : Fabolous and DJ Drama Representing : Brooklyn, New York Mixtape : There Is No Competition III: Death Comes in 3’s Real Spit : Funeral Fab takes no days off — not even Christmas. On Sunday while many were celebrating the holidays with family, Fabolous decided to gift-wrap his latest mixtape and release it online as a free download. There Is No Competition III: Death Comes in 3’s is the third installment of the popular series that Fab and DJ Drama started in 2008. “The theme of There Is No Competition III, it has the subtitle Death Comes in 3’s, which plays along in the trilogy of this tape,” Fab told Mixtape Daily . The death-themed tape doesn’t disappoint. On “Black City,” Fabolous dons appropriate mourning attire and rides Tyga’s “Rack City” beat to take shots at his rap competitors. The killing spree continues on the Lloyd Banks-assisted “Get Down or Lay Down” when F-A-B-O spits, “Money over bitches, dirt on top of bitch, n—as/ Put you in ya place, it happens to be a ditch, n—a.” The Street Fam general calls upon more rap comrades on “B.E.T,” which features Styles P and Jadakiss, and then again on “Unf—witable” with Red Caf
Atlanta MC builds on ‘All the Way Turnt Up’ momentum to land a spot on our list — vote now! By Steven Roberts Roscoe Dash Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News It’s hard to believe Roscoe Dash has yet to put out an album. “All the Way Turnt Up” was such a big record last year that hip-hop fans didn’t even think it was his. With Dash being a relative unknown — even within Atlanta’s unique hip-hop scene — people thought the record was by 2010 Hottest Breakthrough MC nominees Travis Porter . But once that was cleared up, everyone from Lil Wayne to Lupe Fiasco was ready to spit over the beat. Dash’s next single, “Show Out,” was a solid effort, but it wasn’t nearly as successful as “Turnt Up.” It looked like Dash might’ve succumbed to one-hit wonder status. But then Roscoe turned up (get it?) on one of 2010’s most overlooked songs, Waka Flocka Flame’s “No Hands.” The song cemented Flocka as a viable mainstream artist, lent Wale a much-needed lifeline and established a market for Mr. R-O-S-C-O-E as a hook man — and helped land him on MTV News’ 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MCs list. Dash’s raspy drawl would appear on DJ Drama’s “Oh My” with Fabulous and Wiz Khalifa and Big Sean’s “Marvin and Chardonnay” with Kanye West. These songs have helped bring about a second wave of interest in Dash. He recently dropped the videos for “Awesome” and “Good, Good Night.” Both songs are featured on his EP, J.U.I.C.E (Just Understand I Control Everything), which is set to drop later on this month. “Music is something I just never stopped doing, especially in high school,” Dash told MTV News. “I remember staying up burning CDs one by one every night until I had, like, 300 CDs, stuffing them in a backpack and going to school the next day, passing them out. “The biggest lesson that I’ve learned coming up is that your fans are going to be the most important people that you come in contact with,” he added. “They’re going to life you up whenever you don’t have the hottest song. They’re just going to rock with you for you.” Hottest Breakthrough MCs was established by MTV News in 2010 as a fan-driven initiative that spotlights, celebrates and cultivates new talent. MTV News chose a pool of young rappers and urged fans to vote for their favorite. When it was all said and done, Wiz Khalifa emerged as the Hottest Breakthrough of last year. The competition was tough, but the Taylor Gang General beat out runner-up Nicki Minaj, ATL group Travis Porter, Diggy Simmons and J. Cole. This year, you can vote for Roscoe (or your favorite up-and-comer) over at RapFix.MTV.com , and be sure to check back for daily updates and poll results. Each day, we’ll spotlight a new Hottest Breakthrough MC before we conclude Tuesday (December 13) when the polls close at 11:59 p.m. ET. The 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC will be revealed during Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” during which the winner will appear as our in-studio guest. There will also be a special announcement about MTV News’ upcoming Hottest MCs in the Game list and debate. To be considered a Hottest Breakthrough MC, an artist cannot have released a major-label full-length album. Finalists from 2010’s Hottest Breakthrough MCs poll will not be eligible for 2011 consideration, so unfortunately, Diggy Simmons and Travis Porter won’t be part of this conversation. Gangsta Gibbs’ mixtapes earned him a deal with Young Jeezy and a spot on MTV News’ 2011 Hottest Breakthrough list — vote now! By Nadeska Alexis Freddie Gibbs Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News When Freddie Gibbs joined Sway on “RapFix Live” in September, the Gary, Indiana, native was firm in insisting that he would never stray from the deeply lyrical gangster rap that fans now expect from him. His recent deal with Young Jeezy ‘s CTE label bolstered his efforts and kept the spotlight on his releases this year, earning him a nomination for MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011 . Despite a fizzled deal with Interscope Records in 2007, Gibbs (born Frederick Tipton) continued his rise to lyrical prominence by dropping popular mixtapes, including 2009’s The Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs and Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik . The success of those two mixtapes landed him a spot on XXL ‘s 2010 Freshman cover, but that was only the beginning for Gangsta Gibbs. The 29-year-old rapper continued his manic music run, releasing the independent EP Str8 Killa No Filla via Decon Records in 2010, and in April he made his biggest career move thus far, inking a new deal with Young Jeezy’s CTE (Corporate Thugz Entertainment). Besides teaming up with the Snowman on singles like “Run DMC” and “Do It for You,” Gibbs put in some extra time in the lab, turning out his mixtape Cold Day in Hell in October. The project showcased his growth, with standout cuts including “Anything to Survive” and “Menace II Society” and a slew of guest features from Freeway, Jeezy, Juicy J and 2 Chainz. Major label or not, don’t expect Gibbs to soften the content of his material anytime soon. “I wanna be taboo. I want your parents to not want my music in your iPod,” Gibbs told MTV News. “I want your mom to be scared of what I’m talking about because it’s so real.” His fellow contenders for Hottest Breakthrough MC should probably be scared too.
