Florence And The Machine’s Triumphant VMA Peformance: Behind The Scenes

‘So You Think You Can Dance’ choreographer Travis Wall masterminded the dazzling routine. By James Montgomery Florence and the Machine perform at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images LOS ANGELES — There was no shortage of memorable moments during Sunday night’s 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , thanks to a lineup loaded with big-name stars. But it was a relative unknown who turned in one of the night’s biggest triumphs. Florence and the Machine (or, more specifically, Florence and a host of hyperactive dancers) practically stole the show with a performance that was, as promised , both ethereal and downright joyous. Part kaleidoscopic revue, part hippified freakout, Flo’s VMA version of “Dog Days Are Over” wowed the star-packed audience inside the Nokia Theatre, and, in the process, may have sent her on the way to Stateside success.

Travis Barker And Fat Joe Freestyle On MTV’s ‘RapFix Live’

The Blink-182 drummer teams up with Joey Crack for an impromptu session. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway Travis Barker and Fat Joe Photo: MTV News Fat Joe’s “RapFix Live” interview on Friday (August 6) was heavy on highlights. The Bronx lyricist talked about confronting hip-hop nemesis 50 Cent, his memories of the late Big Pun and his strained relationship with Remy Ma. However, one of the more surprising moments arose when rocker Travis Barker joined the Terror Squad rapper’s sit-down. Barker — at the MTV News offices for a separate interview — warmly greeted Joe, who recalled fond times with Barker’s late pals DJ AM and Lil Chris. While Travis may be best known as the drummer for rock outfits Blink-182 and +44, he’s since branched out, becoming a familiar figure in the hip-hop scene. Barker has remixed songs by stars like Soulja Boy and hit the stage with the likes of Jamie Foxx and T-Pain . Joe even dubbed him “our hip-hop drummer. He gets it in. Ain’t nobody like him.” Barker said that he’s been inspired by both rap and rock for a long time. “Ten years ago … I’d be on tour with Blink or [his band] Transplants, one of my punk rock bands, and they’d be like, ‘What are you listening to?’ They’d be expecting me to say [something] like, ‘I’m listening to Minor Threat or Sex Pistols,’ and I would say … I can’t stop listening to Low End Theory [by] Tribe Called Quest, and they’d be bummed,” Barker revealed. “That stuff changed my life when I was a kid. I’d always be real honest and upfront about it. I listen to everything. I listen to Minor Threat just as much as I listen to Tribe.” In fact, Barker is working on the solo project Give the Drummer Some, which features a major cast of hip-hop talent, including Game, Lil Wayne, Swizz Beatz, Rick Ross and Beanie Sigel. Joe said MCs respect the drummer because he’s blurring the boundaries of hip-hop and rock by bringing the two genres together. “For somebody like Travis to tell Rick Ross or Game, ‘Yo, get in the studio,’ and they get in like this [snaps fingers], it just shows how much they appreciate what he’s doing towards the culture of hip-hop or rock or whatever you wanna call it,” Joe, who recently dropped his The Darkside, Vol. 1, said. Then, the two stars demonstrated what a hip-hop and rock collabo looks like with an impromptu performance. Barker brandished the drumsticks he always keeps on hand and took it back to the schoolyard, thumping out an uptempo beat on a stiff notebook. Joe leaned back in his chair, and with casual swagger, began to rattle off a swift freestyle. “This that genocide talk/ They killing babies again/ And there’s lines around the block/ Like it’s the ’80s again/ Yeah, the dark side and you don’t wanna go to this place/ Where I got special powers/ I could punch a hole through your face,” he rhymed. Travis Porter Are ‘Killing’ Indie Scene With Proud To Be A Problem

Unsigned Atlanta trio say new mixtape is ‘giving most signed artists problems,’ in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Travis Porter Photo: MTV News This Week’s Main Pick Street Kings : Travis Porter Holding It Down For : ATL Mixtape : Proud to Be a Problem. Real Spit : Strap, Quez and Ali are bringing that youthful energy with a club banger and the Atlanta trio have fans on the Internet riding for them heavy. “At the moment we are an independent problem,” Quez explained of Travis Porter’s new mixtape Proud to Be a Problem. “We’re proud of it!” he added, acknowledging that the group has earned strong buzz in the South without the backing of a major. “It’s really a good vs. bad thing. It’s a good problem because we letting other independent artists know it’s possible to be known and out there, just grindin’. It’s a bad problem because we’re giving most signed artists problems.” As you can tell, these guys aren’t exactly modest about their increasing popularity. Several months ago, Travis Porter hooked up with Roscoe Dash and put out a version of “All the Way Turnt Up.” Eventually Dash, who came up with the song, released it officially through his own label, Interscope. The Interscope version didn’t feature Travis Porter, but included Soulja Boy. Still, TP kept their movement going, releasing the Problem mixtape a few weeks back — the downloads were crazy. And the group is in no rush to sign with a major label just yet. “At the moment, we’re like a high school player on the verge of going to college,” Strap said of Travis Porter’s unsigned status. “We have to pick the right one. We have to weigh out all the options and pick the best deal accordingly. When that time comes, we’ll make that decision. But at the moment, we’re killing the independent scene.” Quez and Ali have a familial bond and they’ve known Strap since they were 12. “Well, me and Ali are stepbrothers,” Quez began to explain. “So we been knowing each other. We met Strap in like the 6th grade and made a group called the Hard Hittaz and been makin’ great music ever since.” Travis Porter also have a short film out to accompany their mixtape.
