Canadian Government Decides Penis-Measuring Lie Detector for Children Not Such a Great Idea

Oh boy—where even to start with this one. Use of penile plethysmography (PPG), which measure your penis for arousal while viewing questionable content, is being ceased by the Canadian government. After being used on kids for 25 years. PPG testing, almost too perverse to believe it was actually a government-sanctioned procedure, was employed in British Columbia as a means of interrogating child sex offenders. A sensor was strapped to a child's penis, monitoring blood flow while the kid was subjected to images of other nude children, and audio descriptions of rape. Reread that sentence if necessary. The reasoning—if you can even call it that—behind the test was to discern whether a child offender was lying about his or her desires, though we have a feeling this treatment probably created far more sociopaths than it screened. As Boing Boing points out, and as any adolescent can tell you, erections aren't exactly the most objectively predictable phenomenon, refuting entirely the purpose of the test. British Columbia's Minister of Children and Family Development has put an end to PPG after the revelation that a technician administering the test was himself a sex offender. The levels of perversion-within-perversion here are dizzying. The Canadian government will now begin an official inquiry into trauma victims among the children subjected to PPG over the past decades—an investigation we have a feeling will not be a short one. added by: Omnomynous

Michael Douglas To Undergo Treatment For Throat Tumor

‘I am very optimistic,’ Douglas says in a statement. By Kara Warner Michael Douglas Photo: MTV News Michael Douglas is set to begin chemotherapy after doctors recently discovered a tumor in his throat. People magazine reports that the “Wall Street” actor’s doctors expect Douglas to make a full recovery as soon as he completes eight weeks of treatment, which will reportedly include a combination of radiation and chemotherapy. “I am very optimistic,” Douglas said in a statement to the magazine. No word yet on how the treatment will affect his work schedule, as Douglas has a lot on his plate, including promotion for his return to the character Gordon Gekko in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” which opens at the end of September. Douglas is also set to appear alongside a slew of stars in Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming action thriller “Knockout.” The cast includes Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Michael Angarano, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas and Bill Paxton. When MTV News last caught up with the 65-year-old actor, he appeared happy and healthy at the Film Society of Lincoln Center Honors, where he received the year’s top honor, presented to Hollywood legends. At the time, Douglas was hard-pressed to pick his favorite role from his four-decade-long career in the business. “You work as hard on your failures as on your successes,” he said. “I’d say tonight, particularly because [director] Curtis [Hanson] is here, I liked ‘Wonder Boys’ a lot. ‘Solitary Man’ is right up there. I’m real happy with my batting average. I look at the rest, and it’s pretty good. You pick your spots.” Share your well-wishes for Michael Douglas and his family in the comments.

Miguel Hopes To Get On ‘All I Want Is You’ Partner J. Cole’s Album

‘The album is what I would describe as being ‘eclec-tric,’ ‘ R&B singer tells Mixtape Daily of his own debut. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Miguel Photo: Jive Fire Starter: Miguel Miguel is bringing sex appeal and soul with his new video for “All I Want Is You.” The track features J. Cole, and the new singer said he’s more than willing to return the favor for the Roc Nation rapper. “I remember talking to [‘All I Want Is You’ producer] Salam [Remi] and him saying, ‘Just be honest,’ ” Miguel said about the song’s lyrics. “I’m excited about it. I didn’t get to be in the studio with J. Cole. I recorded the song, and Mark Pitts at Jive — who happens to be a part of J. Cole’s management as well — I remember the call. It was 3 o’clock in the morning, and Mark called me like, ‘Yo, it’s crazy! I’mma play it for Cole.’ He played it for him, and Cole said he liked it. I’m looking forward to getting on [Cole’s] forthcoming album, hopefully. Maybe.” Miguel dropped Mischief: The Mixtape awhile back, and it got picked up by hip-hop blogs such as 2DopeBoyz.com. The standout record was “Sure Thing,” which helped him get his record deal. “All I Want Is You” is the name of his debut album as well as his lead single and video. “The video was really dope,” he said. “The director worked with me on the treatment. It was really his concept on the treatment, but I sent him some references, and he did a really good job at putting it together and making sure it was smart, but it wasn’t too smart. We wanted to have some nostalgic qualities, a hip-hop base, but still wanted to give it an edgy flair.” Miguel said he’s been influenced by Prince and Queen but grew up listening to the kings of rap as well. “The album is what I would describe as being ‘eclec-tric,’ ” he said. “It’s in tone with keeping hip-hop as a base, because that’s what I grew up on, but including and infusing styles such as classic rock and funk. I think people will be excited to hear how we mix that together.” The All I Want Is You album comes out September 14. For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Maroon 5’s ‘Misery’ Video: Watch Behind-The-Scenes Footage Now!

Video premieres Thursday on MTV.com! By James Montgomery Maroon 5’s Adam Levine in “Misery” Photo: A&M/ Octone By now, you’re probably aware that Maroon 5’s new video, “Misery,” is a pretty action-packed affair, featuring frontman Adam Levine being tossed off of buildings, slapped around and dodging oncoming traffic. “We decided to focus on violence instead of sex this time around,” bassist Mickey Madden joked to MTV News last month. “We like to switch it up,” Levine added. “The next one will be about drugs.” We’ll just have to see about that one … but in the meantime, you can watch some exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage of the “Misery” clip right now, because MTV News was there in May, when the band shot the video. Maroon 5 worked with noted director Joseph Kahn — who’s helmed clips for the likes of 50 Cent, Britney Spears, Eminem, Muse and U2 — on the clip, which must have been an experience all its own. After all, not only has he worked with the biggest names in the biz, but he actually dreamed up the violent concept behind “Misery.” “The cool thing is, when Joseph wrote the treatment … after reading a few sentences, I thought it was really amazing,” Levine said. “He’s awesome. He’s really enthusiastic and creative and awesome and fun. We’ve never worked with him before and he’s a very big video director, so it’s great to finally get to do something with him.” “He’s put all of this together impressively, quickly and effectively,” Madden added. “It’s pretty awesome to see.” The full “Misery” video will premiere tomorrow on MTV.com, but you’re going to have to wait a bit longer to hear their new album, Hands All Over, which isn’t due until September. PROVENGE: New Hope For Prostrate Cancer Patients

huffingtonpost A new hope for prostrate cancer patients as the Food and Drug Administration approved a new type of treatment from Dendreon Corp. Provenge, a new form of immune therapy, is approved for certain men with advanced prostate cancer who have failed treatment with hormone therapy. It is designed to use a patient’s own cells to stimulate the body’s immune system to fight the cancer. The vaccine combines a protein that is found in most prostate cancer cells with a substance that helps the immune system recognize the cancer as a threat. In clinical trials, Provenge was well tolerated: the most common adverse events that were reported were fever and chills lasting for one to two days. This has also shown significant survival benefit for patients who have metastatic androgen-independent prostate cancer, when compared to patients receiving placebo. In 2007, the FDA rejected Provenge despite an unanimous vote in favor of the treatment. At the time, the FDA said the two clinical studies submitted didn’t meet study goals of reducing so-called time to progression, or the advancement, of cancer. But an analysis of one of those studies showed those receiving Provenge lived about 4.5 months longer than men not receiving the treatment. Still, the FDA asked for more data, which Dendreon later submitted. That data, which involved 512 patients, showed an increase in overall survival of 4.1 months among those receiving Provenge. The median survival for patients receiving Provenge treatments was 25.8 months, compared to 21.7 months for those who did not receive the treatment. The company’s stock was halted for news pending at shortly after 12:30 p.m. EDT, but was trading up 15% to $45.50 at the time after earlier hitting a new high. Bret Michaels’ Medical Setback Is Routine, Expert Says

Singer is temporarily at higher risk for seizures as result of brain hemorrhage. By Gil Kaufman Bret Michaels Photo: George Napolitano/ Getty Images long road to recovery from a brain hemorrhage hit a minor setback on Tuesday, when his spokesperson revealed that the Poison singer is suffering from hyponatremia , a lack of sodium in the body that could lead to seizures. While serious, the medical issue is a fairly typical complication of the type of subarachnoid hemorrhage stroke suffered by the 47-year-old rock star, according to Dr. Joseph Broderick, a member of the American Academy of Neurology and chair of the University of Cincinnati Neurology Department. Bret Michaels’ Career In Photos “The body regulates the amount of minerals in the blood within a narrow range, and sodium is one of them,” said Broderick, a specialist in the treatment of acute stroke and the genetics of hemorrhagic stroke. Broderick, who is not treating Michaels and does not have first-hand knowledge of the singer’s case, told MTV News earlier this week that based on the information made public so far, the case is very serious but could be survivable. “There are a lot of things that could lead to sodium levels being outside normal range and it’s not atypical as a complication of a subarachnoid hemorrhage,” Broderick said on Wednesday. “It’s complicated, but is generally a treatable thing that people recover from and not generally life-threatening.” Hyponatremia can make a patient sleepier and, as noted, increase the risk of seizures in the short term, but Broderick said it doesn’t make them more prone to seizures in the long term. If properly managed by Michaels’ doctors, the disorder should not pose a long term threat to his brain health.
