Rutgers Student Dharun Ravi Found Guilty In CyberBullying Case

Ravi could get up to 10 years in jail for spying on his roommate, Tyler Clementi. By Gil Kaufman Tyler Clementi Photo: Facebook A jury found former Rutgers University student Dharun Ravi guilty of hate crimes and invasion of privacy on Friday (March 16), bringing to an end a case that helped spark a national debate on cyberbullying. Ravi was accused of setting up a webcam to spy on his roommate, Tyler Clementi , as Clementi engaged in a consensual sexual encounter with another man in the pair’s Rutgers dorm room. Clementi leaped to his death from the George Washington Bridge in New York three days after learning that Ravi viewed the encounter and, according to testimony, invited others to watch and discuss what he saw online. According to The New York Times, in addition to the hate crimes, the jury found Ravi guilty of tampering with evidence and witnesses because of his efforts to change Twitter and text messages in which he had encouraged others to watch the webcam footage. Ravi, 20, faced 15 counts of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation, tampering with evidence and a witness and hindering apprehension. The jury concluded that Ravi had not intended to intimidate Clementi on the first night that he secretly switched on the webcam to watch his roommate’s actions. But they concluded that Clementi had reason to believe that he was targeted because he was gay (based on the language in some of the texts), and on one count, the jury found that Ravi knew Clementi, 18, would feel intimidated by his actions. Because he was found guilty on at least one question of whether his actions rose to the level of bias discrimination, Ravi could face the maximum penalty of up to 10 years in jail and deportation to his native India. “These acts were purposeful, they were intentional and they were planned,” prosecutor Julia L. McClure told the jury on the first day of the trial, which lasted three weeks and concluded with two days of deliberation by the jury. Later in the trial, she told the jury that Ravi “was bothered by Tyler Clementi’s sexual orientation.” In a rare instance, almost none of the facts in the case were in dispute, as Ravi’s lawyers agreed that their client had set up the webcam and then gone to a friend’s room and viewed Clementi kissing the unidentified man. They also did not deny that Ravi sent Twitter and text messages to others describing what he’d seen and urging them to watch a second viewing. Ravi’s attorneys painted their client as an immature college student who acted thoughtlessly and made a mistake, but denied that he’d been spurred by homophobia. “He hasn’t lived long enough to have any experience with homosexuality or gays,” attorney Steven Altman said during closing arguments. “He doesn’t know anything about it. He just graduated high school.” Clementi’s suicide set off a national debate about bullying and intimidation of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth the resulted in public messages of support from everyone from openly gay talk show host Ellen DeGeneres to singer Ciara, “America’s Next Top Model” personality Jay Manuel, President Obama, “One Tree Hill” actress Sophia Bush and “Harry Potter” star Daniel Radcliffe . Eff A Thug: Trial Date Set For William Balfour Who Is Responsible For The 2008 Slayings Of Jennifer Hudson’s Family in Chicago

A judge on Thursday ordered a man charged in the 2008 Chicago slayings of Jennifer Hudson’s mother and two other family members to stand trial in April, despite the objections of his attorney, who said she was not ready. After listening to William Balfour’s attorney say she’s still building her case, a clearly exasperated Cook County Judge William Charles Burns said it didn’t appear she was making any progress and set a date. Burns, who suggested he wanted to start the trial next month, instead ordered jury selection to start April 9 and testimony to begin April 23. He said he expected the trial to last about three or four weeks. Amy Thompson, a deputy public defender, said despite working 12 to 14 hours a day on the case, she could not answer that she was ready for trial, as prosecutors had done. “We’re not prepared for trial at this time,” she said. Balfour, 30, is the estranged husband of Hudson’s sister, Julia Hudson. He is charged with first-degree murder in the October 2008 slayings of the Hudson sisters’ mother, Darnell Donerson, their brother, Jason Hudson, and Julia Hudson’s 7-year-old son, Julian King. Prosecutors allege that Balfour, using a gun he stole from Jason Hudson, shot the three in a jealous rage because he was angry that Julia Hudson had been dating another man. He is accused of shooting Donerson and Jason Hudson in their South Side home, and then grabbing the boy and shooting him inside Jason Hudson’s SUV. The boy’s body was found three days later in the vehicle on the city’s West Side. We hope they lock this muhfugga up and throw away the key. Source More On Bossip! Eff A Lil Young Thug: 10-Year-Old Charged With Murder For Murking His 12-Year-Old Friend

This is sad: Prosecutors filed murder charges Wednesday against a 10-year-old boy accused of fatally stabbing his 12-year-old friend in an East County neighborhood. A detention hearing for the boy is planned for Thursday morning in Juvenile Court. Ryan Carter, 12, was stabbed in the chest about 1:15 p.m. Monday in the driveway of the younger boy’s home in the 12500 block of Royal Road in the unincorporated Winter Gardens area, near El Cajon, according to sheriff’s officials. Paramedics took Carter to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, where he died about 2:30 p.m., Lt. Larry Nesbit said. The alleged killer’s name was withheld due to being a juvenile. Glen Carter said his family is coping with their son’s death and has mixed feelings about the murder charge. “It’s just sad for both families. This is going to be tough to get through,” Carter said. “It’s up to the courts now.” The suspect’s age will play a factor in the trial. The judge could require the 10-year-old to undergo mental evaluation which could take up to eight months before the trial could move forward, a criminal attorney told Fox 5. The attorney said the suspect’s parents are not at fault, but could face civil action. The suspect, who was reportedly being medicated for aggressive behavior problems, was being held in Juvenile Hall while prosecutors reviewed the case. In Slizzard Baby Killer News: Casey Anthony Says She Got Pregnant While Sloppy Drunk And Passed Out, Doesn’t Know Who Caylee’s Father Is

We all aware that Casey Anthony is a “party girl” but new evidence is showing that she got pregnant while drunk and passed out: Casey Anthony told a psychiatrist that she didn’t know who her daughter Caylee’s father was because she became pregnant after passing out at a party when she was 18, according to newly released depositions. Anthony was acquitted last July of killing 2-year-old Caylee, who went missing in the summer of 2008 but her disappearance was not reported to authorities until a month later. The little girl’s remains were eventually found in the woods near the home Anthony shared with her parents. Reading from his notes on a November 2010 interview with Anthony, psychiatrist Jeff Danzinger said, “Two beers, possibly given another drug. Woke up passed out…Don’t remember anything at a party, age 18. This is how she said she got pregnant.” Danzinger, who interviewed Anthony five times over two years but did not testify at her trial, also reported that Anthony showed no evidence of mental illness and had normal results on a psychological test – a fact he found surprising. “You would expect that would provoke some measure of distress, whether someone genuinely did it, whether someone was falsely accused,” Danziger said. “If my child was missing and I was in jail being accused of it, I probably wouldn’t eat and wouldn’t be cheerful and wouldn’t be able to read.” Anthony also reportedly told Danzinger that her father had molested her when she was young – a claim defense attorneys raised at trial – and that he had found Caylee’s drowned body in the family’s swimming pool, helped dispose of it and then covered it up. During the trial, George Anthony denied playing any role in Caylee’s disappearance or death. SMH. No words for this trifling heffa. None at all. R.I.P. Caylee Source More On Bossip! Joe Paterno to Retire from Penn State, Expresses Remorse Over Role in Sexual Abuse Scandal

No one thought it would end this way for Joe Paterno: the iconic Penn State football coach has announced his retirement, effective at the end of this season, due to the ongoing sex scandal surrounding the university’s athletic department. In 2002, Paterno learned that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky may have abused a boy in a locker room shower, but only reported the incident to the athletic director, as opposed to the police. “I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief,” the record-breaking coach state in a statement, adding: “I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can. This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.”

Conrad Murray Documentary to Air on MSNBC; Michael Jackson Estate, Fans Irate

As previously reported, MSNBC is planning to air a controversial documentary about Dr. Conrad Murray this weekend, and Michael Jackson’s estate is absolutely livid. The star’s executors issued a statement, saying, “Like so many of Michael’s fans, the Estate is disgusted by MSNBC’s irresponsible and inexplicable decision.” “Co-Executors John Branca and John McClain are sending a letter to executives at Comcast, NBC Universal and MSNBC to express disdain for their actions.” Jackson’s fans are understandably up in arms as well, with the group “Justice 4 MJ” trying to organize a global boycott of the documentary about Murray. “The only documentary we want to see is the one of Murray enjoying prison life,” they said . Murray was found guilty of manslaughter earlier this week. “Michael Jackson and The Doctor: A Fatal Friendship,” filmed during the lead-up to the trial, does not paint the late singer in a flattering light. Branca and McClean are irate that Murray has no qualms about “smearing the reputation of his ‘friend,'” even though he refused to testify under penalty of perjury in his trial, and at the network for giving him a platform. The co-executors doubt MSNBC’s claim that Murray got paid only $1 for his participation, claiming “moral loopholes” (such as those they’re reportedly using to try to lure Casey Anthony ) to “boost ratings at a struggling network.” Murray will be sentenced November 29.

Dr. Conrad Murray Defense May Subpoena Nine Other Michael Jackson Doctors

Dr. Conrad Murray ‘s defense team has nine former doctors of Michael Jackson on its witness list for Murray’s upcoming involuntary manslaughter trial. Among the doctors on the list is Dr. Arnold Klein , Jackson’s dermatologist and friend whose treatment of the star has long been subject to scrutiny. The last also includes Dr. Neil Ratner, who toured with Jackson in 1996 and 1997, and Dr. David Adams of Las Vegas, Nev., both anesthesiologists. Ratner confirmed that Michael Jackson suffered from a sleep disorder, but wouldn’t elaborate further. It’s anticipated that Murray’s lawyers, Ed Chernoff and Michael Flanagan, will grill Ratner about the specifics of his medical treatment. In all, Dr. Murray’s lawyers list 103 people who could be called at the trial, including a nurse practitioner, Cherilyn Lee, who claims Jackson asked her for Propofol in the weeks leading up to his death, but she refused to supply it. Lee, a nurse practitioner and nutritionist who worked for Jackson, claimed in the days after his sudden death that he had asked her for Propofol in April 2009, was served with a subpoena to testify at the trial by Murray’s defense. “Cherilyn is prepared to testify at the trial and tell the truth. Cherilyn has never spoken with anyone from the District Attorney’s office,” a source said . “She was interviewed in the weeks after Jackson’s death by the coroner and the LAPD. Cherilyn hasn’t heard from those agencies since that time.” Jury selection in the criminal trial against Dr. Conrad Murray begins on September 8, 2011, and is anticipated to take several weeks to select a jury. Opening arguments are slated for the last week of September. The trial could last until Thanksgiving, with Murray facing up to four years in prison. Despite the long witness list, Murray is the only doctor of Jackson’s who has been criminally charged in connection with the King of Pop’s death. Thoughts? Dr. Conrad Murray …

Casey Anthony Judge Shreds Media; Names of Jury Members to Remain Sealed

The judge in the Casey Anthony case ordered the names of the jurors to remain secret for their protection, tearing the media a new one in the process. Judge Belvin Perry cited the “circus-like atmosphere” around the trial in the name of entertainment rather than justice for putting the jurors at risk. Jury members’ identities will be sealed until at least October 25. “The jurors in this case face the possibility of substantial injury if their names are made public,” Perry ruled, according to the Orlando Sentinel . Casey Anthony Verdict Reading Florida law requires that the names be released, but Perry will not “until sufficient time has passed to allow those enraged by the verdict and who might instinctively react with violence to compose and restrain themselves.” He again cited the case’s “unique and alarming circumstances.” Perry also took the opportunity to take the media to task. Scathingly, he wrote: “Clearly, the broadcast of an official and serious court proceeding such as this trial where a young girl was dead and her mother faced the death penalty devolved into cheap, soap opera-like entertainment.” The use of the state’s public records law to have the juror names released, the judge lamented, had “become simply a tool to sell a story.” Casey Anthony, 25, was found not guilty on July 5 of murdering her 2-year-old daughter Caylee, sparking outcry and even death threats . The media frenzy hasn’t slowed since that date. In fact, it may intensify as the first Casey Anthony interview is being shopped around.
