‘Only God Forgives’ − The Top 5 Bad-Ass Moments From The New International Trailers

Two new international trailers have dropped for Only God Forgives ,   Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn’s  next film with Ryan Gosling , and they’re sinewy, tense numbers that do an effective job of ratcheting up anticipation for the picture. Audiences at the Cannes Film Festival will get to see the movie on May 22, while U.S. moviegoers will have to wait until July 19.  The two trailers below aren’t that much different.  Both employ a lightning-fast cutting pace that left me unsettled and disoriented, which, I suspect, is exactly what an American would feel while seeking to avenge his brother’s death in murky Bangkok. If I have to choose a favorite, I prefer the first, French trailer because, like rare steak and a good Bordeaux,  brutal cinematic violence pairs nicely with French subtitles, The second clip is a little less frenetic and drops a clue as to why Gosling’s brother  (Tom Burke) met with a grim end. ( If you aren’t familiar with the plot of Only God Forgives , you can read about it here . ) Taken together, the trailers add up to a handful of key moments, some of which were established in the red-band trailer that dropped earlier this month . Here are the five most bad-ass moments from the trailers (in ascending order). If you disagree, leave your list in the comments section below. 5. Vithaya Pangsringarm plunging knives through the forearms of a bearded guy and making him scream. Really loud. 4. Ryan Gosling smashing a drink glass into a guy’s face . Colossal velocity! 3. Gosling dragging a guy by the roof of his mouth . That cannot end well. 2. Gosling saying: “Wanna Fight?” in the French trailer. (Because it’s subtitled.) 1. Kristin Scott Thomas , who play Gosling’s mother, telling him:  “If the tables were turned, your brother would have found your killer — brought me his head on a fucking platter!   I can’t wait to find out what Daddy was like. WATCH: Tribeca Film Festival Rocks Out On Opening Night With The National & ‘Mistaken For Strangers’

For the first time ever, the Tribeca Film Festival has selected a documentary as its opening night film.  And what a unique documentary.   Mistaken for Strangers chronicles the misadventures of Tom Berninger as he works as a roadie for his brother’s band, The National .   Lead singer Matt Berninger points out that Tom “was hoping he was going on tour with Mötley Crüe , and it’s like, we’re not Mötley Crüe.  Like he got a lot of footage of guys on their laptops.  And he got bored, and that led him to sort of some maybe bad behavior, and ultimately getting fired.” Although The National might not party hard like Mötley Crüe, they are a hot, critically acclaimed indie band from Brooklyn that’s closing in on mainstream success.  And that’s one of the reasons festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal picked  Mistaken for Strangers  as this year’s opening night film.  “This one really embodies the spirit of the festival: a can-do attitude and downtown New York, Brooklyn.” “Starts out as if it’s gonna be a rock-doc” says Mistaken for Strangers  Executive Producer Marshall Curry, “but very quickly goes off the rails and becomes a story about brotherly competition and trying to find your own creative path.” Does Matt Berninger feel weird having his personal laundry aired in public, especially at such an important time in his career?  “I’ve never been afraid of that, I mean like the songs are pretty intimate and pretty honest and unflattering…I think in a way [Tom] made a movie about himself, which is very much like what one of our songs is, that I would do.  So I’m really proud of it, I think it’s beautiful.  I think it’s a totally appropriate film for our kind of band.” Check out my full red carpet interview below: Follow Grace Randolph on  Twitter . ‘Pacific Rim’ TV Spot − Is The Monster Lame Or What?

Why am I not excited about  Pacific Rim ?  I’m mostly a fan of Guillermo del Toro ‘s  work, particularly the superb  Pan’s Labyrinth , but the three teaser clips that have been released for the filmmaker’s hotly anticipated mechs-vs-monsters summer sci-fi film have all left me cold. Part of the problem is that they’re all virtually the same. The new international TV spot, for instance, is a condensed retread of the earlier trailers, and its brevity draws attention to what I think may be the film’s biggest weakness: a lame monster.  Yes, the giant human-piloted Jaeger mechs are impressive — even if they defy science and physics — but their enemies, which are called Kaiju , Japanese for “strange beast,”  don’t look the fearsome, formidable part they’re supposed to play in the picture. (If you’re okay with spoilers, this review of the Pacific Rim script indicates that the Kaiju overwhelm the Jaegers.) Clearly, del Toro is paying homage to the Japanese Toho Studios kaiju films of the 1950s, ’60s and beyond — the Godzilla franchise being the most well known of them.  The problem is, the creature in the  Pacific Rim  looks like it came directly from the set of one of those hokey movies and didn’t stop by the visual effects department to get a rad new upgrade. Remember, Gamera , the amusing flying turtle (which was not a Toho creation)?  If you took the body of that ’60s-era monster and grafted the head of Roland Emmerich’s 1998 Godzilla onto it — not a movie that any filmmaker should be referencing — then you’d get a creature similar to the one you see in the photo above and trailer below. Not-So-Scary Monster Perhaps del Toro is keeping more fearsome creatures under wraps. The Kaiju apparently hail from another universe — a kind of interstellar Monster Island — so conceptually there could be more than one species. I hope so. If the creature in the teasers is all we get, then Pacific Rim could suffer from a real tension deficit. One other thing:  It’s time to give Idris Elba’s “Today, we are canceling the apocalypse!”  speech a rest.  It was rousing the first 10 times I heard it — in January. Three months later, it’s ripe to be satirized, and the movie isn’t out until July 12. What do you think? More on Pacific Rim : ‘Pacific Rim’ Vs. FIRST LOOK: ‘Old Boy’ Teaser Poster Counts The Days & Raises Questions

Spike Lee’s   remake of Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy doesn’t hit theaters until October, and that just seems way too long to wait. I’m genuinely excited to see what Lee does with the material and am envisioning a revenge (and blood)-soaked 25th Hour .  The good news is that FilmDistrict has finally dropped a tiny morsel from the upcoming film.  The bad news: it’s chicken scratch. The distributor has unveiled a  teaser poster for the film at   CinemaCon , which is taking place in Las Vegas April 15-18 .  The symbolism borrows from Park’s original: they’re the scratches that the imprisoned protagonist Oh Dae-su ( Choi   Min-sik ) uses to keep track of time. That character gets an American makeover in Lee’s version:  He’s now Joe Doucett (Josh Brolin), and, according to the official synopsis he’s an advertising executive  “who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.” These clues leave me with a handful of questions, most of them having to do with other plot points from the original that are ripe for homage: 1) There are a lot of advertising executives I’d like to see locked away, but for 20 years?  What did he do, devise those Kia ads with the hipster hamsters ? 2) In the original Oh Dae-su tracked down his captor via the dumplings he was fed in prison every day. If an American comfort food is substituted, what will it be? Macaroni & Cheese? 3) Will the live octopus-eating scene be referenced? (If you haven’t watched the original Oldboy , you should, but, in the meantime, I’ve posted the scene below.) 4) Will incest figure into the plot as it did in the original?  If so, American audiences will squirm enough that reprising the live octopus scene won’t be necessary. 5) Does Lee’s brother  Cinqué Lee have a thing about playing bellhops ? He plays one in this movie, and he played one in Jim Jarmusch’s 1989 film Mystery Train . If you crave more Oldboy  info while you wait for a trailer,  check out my interview with director Park in which he explains why he’s not interested in seeing Lee’s remake until it’s released. WATCH: Robert De Niro & Jane Rosenthal Get Down To Business For 2013 Tribeca Film Festival

This Wednesday kicks off the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival , and I got the chance to sit down with festival co-founders Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal to talk shop.  Now while all film festivals have plenty of business going on behind the scenes, Tribeca puts it front and center with events like its  Future of Film LIVE talks which focus on film distribution.  According to Rosenthal, the festival is geared to reflect the hot topics of conversation in the film industry today:  “We have to look at how the business is changing and how you create is different because of technology…so it’s that merging together of that dialogue.” As for De Niro, he’s looking forward to the screening and discussion of his 1982 film The King of Comedy .  “I haven’t seen it for a long, long time.  And talking with Marty Scorsese about it and answering whatever questions…that will be interesting.” Check out my full interview from below, as well as the festival’s website where they’ll feature live streaming of some events: Follow Grace Randolph on  Twitter . Brad Pitt Turns Furniture Designer

Besides commanding millions for his heavy rotation of films, co- shepherding a large brood and building housing in New Orleans, Brad Pitt is adding another set of skills to his resume – designing furniture. His pieces will likely not be heading to an Ikea near you any time soon, but it is not just a passing fancy either. Pitt has been designing buildings and furniture since the 1990s and some of his pieces will be on display in New York in the coming days. The actor will present a dozen pieces including tables, chars and what Architectural Digest dubbed “one rather fantastic bed” along with dozens of other pieces with his collaborator, Frank Pollaro, whose New Jersey-based company is renowned for its re-productions of Art Deco furnishings. [ Related: ‘World War Z’ First Look: It’s Brad Pitt Vs. CG Zombies ] The display will open November 13th (pollaro.com has details). “I’ve been doodling ideas for buildings and furniture since the early 1990s, when I first discovered [Charles Rennie] Mackintosh and Frank Lloyd Wright,” Pitt said. “Actually, I found Wright in college, when looking for a lazy two-point credit to get out of French. It forever changed my life.” Pitt’s architectural affinity is evident in his Make It Right foundation, which taps the services of veteran architects to create “quality, affordable housing” in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans. Pollaro noticed Pitt’s concepts in a sketchbook the Killing Them Softly actor had made while installing a re-production Ruhlmann desk the actor purchased a few years ago, Pollaro said, “I asked him, ‘Why don’t we make some of this stuff real?'” he recalled. “Brad said he thought that could be fun.” Now the two meet regularly pouring over what Pollaro said are “thousands” of ideas. The meetings “last anywhere from seven to ten hours.” It’s not everyone who gets to collaborate with a Hollywood A-lister mulling over aesthetics. “We talk about design, about materials, about craftsmanship, about classicism, about modernism. He has a respect for the masters of design,” noted Pollaro. The pieces headed for display include a bed, in which only nine will be made in different materials. Additionally, there is a dining table, a cocktail table, several side tables, a few club chairs and a bathtub that fits two in Statuario Venato marble. The designs will be customized in a variety of material and finishes that will be made in limited productions signed by Pitt and Pollaro who said some pieces may eventually be adapted for larger-scale productions. “The same chair we charge $45,000 for might sell for a fraction of that,” said Pollaro. Despite the new gig, Pitt will maintain his day job . His latest project, Killing Them Softly by Andrew Dominik will hit theaters November 30th. [ Sources: Architectural Digest , Yahoo ]

‘War Witch’ Packs Powerful Child Soldier Story With Eye On Oscar

A moving and emotional powerhouse, Canadian director Kim Nguyen’s War Witch packs a punch worthy of the best of conflict thrillers, though more shocking is that the events depicted in the feature, which is Canada’s contender for Best Foreign-language Oscar consideration, are happening every day. The story of a teen girl who is kidnapped by Congo rebels after she is forced to execute her parents left audiences aghast at AFI Fest where it screened this week. Hailing from Canada, Nguyen may seem an unlikely filmmaker to take on some of the most notorious human rights tragedies of modern times, but he became interested in child soldiers after meeting a former youth who became lead a pack of others in a violent uprising in Africa. “There was this kid named Johnny who was a child soldier who was nine years old and smoked cigars everyday. He said he woke up one day thinking he was a reincarnation of God,” Nguyen told ML. “He had a [group] of soldiers that he lead in a rebellion against the government. The sheer madness of it all struck me and it pushed me to pursue this story.” The French-language feature, which won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival, stars non-pro Rachel Mwanza who plays a 14 year-old girl who becomes an important spiritual figure for a brutal leader of a band of violent rebels. The “Great Tiger” as he is known to his followers, believes she is a war witch who is capable of seeing government soldiers in the thick jungle. She is given preferential treatment, but she is also aware that if she fails in her job, she will likely be executed quickly. Another child soldier whom she calls “Magician” looks out for her and convinces her to run away with him. He tells her that three previous “war witches” were gunned down by the “Great Tiger” after they failed to warn him of the presence of government soldiers on previous occasions. The pair flee to one of Magician’s relatives and are “married” though the rebels eventually track them down. “Learning about child soldiers eventually lead me to Sub-Saharan Africa,” said Nguyen. “I learned that there are actually more women child soldiers than men, which was surprising. What’s tragic, of course, is that they’re used as sexual slaves.” Initially, Nguyen thought of casting actual former child soldiers, but decided against it after meeting them because the trauma of what they had been through was too much. “I had this idea of working with ex-child soldiers but they were just so broken. There was this stare and they were just so broken. So I had an idea to work with people who had similar tough backgrounds as many of the child soldiers, but hadn’t actually [faced warfare].” War Witch won Best Narrative Feature at the Tribeca Film Festival last Spring in addition to another Best Actress win for Mwanza. The festival’s distribution wing, Tribeca Film will release the feature in theaters in early 2013 in addition to Video On Demand and other digital platforms.
