Crystal Bowersox’s ‘People Get Ready’: Best ‘American Idol’ Performance Ever?

MTV News’ ‘Idol’ expert ranks it among moments Fantasia, David Cook and Kelly Clarkson shined. By Jim Cantiello Crystal Bowersox performs on “American Idol” on Tuesday Photo: FOX All season long, the judges on “American Idol” have been urging season nine’s lackluster finalists to search for a song that will give them their “moment.” Those breakout performances have been in short supply this year, but on Tuesday night one of the show’s only stand-out singers, Crystal Bowersox , provided one that could very well go down in the annals of the show’s all-time greats. Bowersox’s emotion-packed cover of Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions’ 1965 hit “People Get Ready” was like a greatest hits of past “Idol” moments. There was the a cappella open, a nice homage to season four’s Bo Bice, who famously performed “In a Dream” without instrumentation. We had a performance felt so deeply, it brought the singer to tears (think Fantasia’s “Summertime”). And we had a family member in the audience that was a big reason for the heightened emotions, in the case Crystal’s dad. She told Ryan Seacrest that just seeing him at the show for the first time brought her to tears. The moment brought to mind the emotion surrounding David Cook’s terminally ill brother making the trip to Hollywood to see the eventual season-seven champ perform “You’ll Always Be My Baby.” Michael Lynche may have admitted to having his own “Idol playbook” of songs on Tuesday night, but it was the 24-year-old dreadlocked mom from Elliston, Ohio, (who claims she never watched “Idol” before being on it) who ended up pulling out classic moves from the show’s bag of tricks. Moves, it’s worth noting, that were all employed by contestants who made it to the finales of their respective seasons.

Do I think Crystal’s “People Get Ready” is the best “Idol” performance of all time? Heck no. Her vocals weren’t as spot-on as one would have hoped, and she didn’t really reinvent the song. Essentially, Crystal just did late singer Eva Cassidy’s version, and Eva sang it better.

But it was certainly the best performance of the season. Thanks to the recent “Crystal Almost Quit” headlines, the song had an extra layer if interpretation automatically built in. It helped that the majority of Tuesday night’s performers were dull and removed from their songs, failing to tap into the inspirational quality the judges were looking for. Watching someone connect to a song that deeply was a breath of fresh air. In nine seasons, the only time contestants sobbed through a song was after being eliminated or during the finale, post-win, when Carrie Underwood choked through “Inside Your Heaven,” Fantasia wailed “I Believe,” Kelly Clarkson sniffled the breakdown of “A Moment Like This” and Jordin Sparks got misty during “This Is My Now.” Watching Crystal break down was evocative of that finale moment. All we were missing was the confetti. There’s plenty of time left in this season, and anything could happen, but there’s a good chance we might see her waterworks flow again. What did you think of Crystal’s teary performance? Who was your favorite on last night’s “Idol”? Talk about it in the comments below. Sources: Elin Nordegren Woods to Divorce Tiger

Tiger Woods and fed-up wife Elin Nordegren Woods appear headed to divorce court as attempts to heal their shattered union apparently came up short. Elin has already met with a divorce lawyer , according to reports, and the final straw in their disintegrating marriage may have been his return to golf. Or the creepy Tiger Woods Nike ad that accompanied it. The New York Daily News, People , and his hometown Orlando Sentinel confirm the divorce lawyer meeting, and ET says the marriage is “indeed over.” Numerous reports say Elin Nordegren was irate over the Nike ad that aired during last week’s Masters featuring the voice of Woods’ late father, Earl. Already concerned that he was insincere in his efforts to change his ways and put family first, the ad spot is said to have pushed her over the edge . Will Tiger Woods’ next drive be to divorce court? According to ET , Woods believed his trip to rehab stint for sex addiction would be enough to keep his family together. Only temporarily, it seems . If that. Elin is reportedly fixing up the $2 million house she purchased in her native country, fueling rumors that she is moving to Sweden for good this summer. There is speculation that she will choose to live there with her kids after a split with Woods … and it would be hard to blame her if that were the case. It is imperative to note that nothing has been confirmed by either Tiger or Elin Woods as of now. There is certainly more to this than we possibly know. However, you have to figure things aren’t going well. All Tiger offered last week was that he was excited to be back … nary a word about his spouse. Even worse? The fact that relations were noticeably better between the two as recently as early March, then cooled. Now they’re on vacation… separately. What do you think: Elin Woods needs to

Tiger and Elin Woods Go on Vacation … Separately!

As he said he would last night after completing his final round of golf Sunday, Tiger Woods flew out of Orlando for a little vacation Monday with his kids. Not coming? Elin Woods, who was also MIA at The Masters . Tiger and his wife are not meeting up and are far away from each other at the moment, as Elin reportedly flew out of Orlando by herself Sunday night. She reportedly flew to Scottsdale, Arizona, leaving the couple’s two children in the care of nannies. Tiger took off early today with Sam and Charlie. He said after his golf return that he was going to take another break, but left unsaid was that he and Elin Woods would be taking separate vacations. Tiger and Elin Woods continue to struggle with their marriage . It isn’t all because Elin won’t put out or hates his guts. People reported today that she went to visit her ailing mother who is undergoing private treatment. However, other sources say that Elin planned this trip a while ago and that when she’s finished, she is planning yet another trip away from Tiger Woods. “Elin is not meeting up with Tiger,” a source said. Elin has grown increasingly cold toward Tiger and things are totally getting worse since he returned to golf. Mrs. Woods has not moved back in with him. Still, she hasn’t given up on the marriage … yet. She continues to take things slowly, exert independence and proceed one day at a time. What do you think Tiger’s wife should do?

Trey Songz Calls Out R. Kelly (Again) In Vibe Cover Story

‘R. Kelly took Aaron Hall’s whole style,’ Songz says after his sound is compared to Kelly’s. By Jayson Rodriguez Trey Songz Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images Trey Songz might have denied that there’s a beef between him and R. Kelly — whom he’s regularly criticized in song and interviews — but that doesn’t mean they share a friendly relationship. In the upcoming April/May issue of Vibe, Songz again talks about Kelly, accusing him of jacking R&B singer/songwriter Aaron Hall’s style. The “Say Aah” singer admits he’s done the same with Kelly’s style, injecting some of the embattled star’s subtleties into his music. The result, Songz’s Ready album, is his most successful project to date. “People say, ‘Well, I hear a lot of R. Kelly in your music.’ So what?” Songz told the magazine, which hits newsstands April 13 “R. Kelly took Aaron Hall’s whole style. Two albums straight. … You can say what you want about me.” The Virginia native lashed out against Kelly on a mixtape for the singer’s use of Auto-Tune, claiming he was chasing trends instead of paving the way. The pair have been tossing barbs at each other since an upstart Songz remixed Kelly’s “Trapped in the Closet” single before the singer decided to make a full-scale series of “Closet” songs. In Trey Songz’s version, he responded as the man in the closet hiding from what was taking place between Kelly and his wife. Kelly then released part two, and in his version, the man in the closet reveals himself to be gay. Since then, Songz has been vocal with his disdain for Kelly. Kelly struck back in an interview, saying the younger singer should “be very careful.” In the meantime, Trey Songz is flourishing as a part of Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 Tour. He’s the opener and also sings during Jay’s set. In December, he told MTV News that during the trip, he, Jay-Z and Young Jeezy are working on music together. “It’s definitely all in the talks,” he said. “It’s the Mob Squad. Me, Jay, Jeezy, we plan on working together while we on this tour, because the energy we have together when we get around each other is amazing. And like I said, all aspects like that on a record is amazing. Maybe while we out on the road we get it done.” What do think about Trey Songz’s comments? Whose side are you on: Trey’s or R. Kelly’s? Michael Steele Spent RNC Money on Bottle Service at a Bondage Club (Updated) [What Up]

Michael Steele is just wasting RNC money on limos and private planes and, yes, private bondage-themed nightclubs with topless ladies. Update: A Republican consultant charged the trip to the RNC, and the party says Chairman Mike was not actually there. Tucker Carlson’s The Daily Carlsoning has a wonderful story about how Michael Steele considered buying a private plane, because he spends so much time flying to nightclubs and Hawaii, but he decided not to. Instead he found many other creative ways to waste money. Once on the ground, FEC filings suggest, Steele travels in style. A February RNC trip to California, for example, included a $9,099 stop at the Beverly Hills Hotel, $6,596 dropped at the nearby Four Seasons, and $1,620.71 spent [update: the amount is actually $1,946.25] at Voyeur West Hollywood , a bondage-themed nightclub featuring topless women dancers imitating lesbian sex. Now, Voyeur is not really a “strip club” so much as a terrible-sounding nightclub with bottle service, long lines, Lindsay Lohan, and, yes, half-naked ladies simulating oral sex on each other. Which, to be honest, sounds way stupider than a proper, respectable strip club. Shame on you, Michael Steele, for encouraging this kind of thing. The GOP really has to get around to firing the embarrassing and inept Michael Steele eventually. Steele spent $1.4 million on the GOP’s terrible new website, he charges $15,000 for speaking appearances , and his RNC continues to spend more than it takes in as we begin the campaign season in earnest. But it would still present a bit of an image problem to fire the one prominent black Republican in America. Update: In a statement, the RNC says Chairman Steele was not present for the Voyeur nightclub trip. That two grand was, apparently, “a reimbursement made to a non-committee staffer.” And the disbursement appears to have covered the check of a Mr. Erik Brown of Orange, California. Brown is a longtime Republican donor and the owner of a direct marketing firm that recently did work for a Republican gubernatorial candidate in California. We emailed Brown to ask if Steele was actually there that night, and we’ll let you know if we hear back from him. ( As Alex Pappas at The Daily Tucker reports, Brown has Tweeted about hanging out with Steele fairly recently. But now Erik has deleted his whole Twitter.)

India to Lindsay Lohan: GTF Out!

We can totally see an exclusive nightclub or fashion show simply not wanting to deal with the train wreck that is Lindsay Lohan and denying her admittance. The world’s largest democracy blacklisting her, however? Britain’s Telegraph reports that government officials in India are mulling whether to ban Lohan permanently from the nation following her December visit. Too bad she has U.S. citizenship and we can’t follow suit. Filming a BBC documentary about child labor and human trafficking, Lohan claimed she saved 40 kids’ lives in a single day during a raid on a sweatshop. The good news: Those kids were in fact rescued. The bad news? Not by Lindsay. The alleged actress and milkaholic apparently played no actual role in it. Lindsay did go to India. After that, the facts are as blurry as this pic . “Over 40 children saved so far … All within one day’s work … This is what life is about … Doing THIS is a life worth living!!!” Lindsay bragged on Twitter. Activists were offended by her boast, and pointed out that the actress arrived in India after the raids in question, and played no part in rescuing the kids. This led officials to discover she violated India’s visa rules: Lohan failed to apply for a work visa for the trip, and illegally filmed a documentary as a tourist. The Telegraph writes that civil servants in New Delhi are now investigating the case to determine whether Lohan will be added to an immigration blacklist. So basically, she used the trip to highlight the superficiality of celebrity life, while trying to superficially score points for going, as she didn’t do anything. Way to go, Linds. Just stick to posing like Jesus next time.

Jessica Simpson Is ‘Stronger’ After Shooting ‘The Price of Beauty’

‘I know there’s nothing that anybody can say about me that will take me to a very low place,’ Simpson tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Jessica Simpson Photo: WireImage She’s been criticized by people for her appearance. She’s had John Mayer talk about her private life to Playboy magazine. And while these things might have gotten under Jessica Simpson’s skin in the past, the singer, who premiered her new VH1 docu-series “The Price of Beauty” on Monday night, said these days, she’s up for any challenge. “I definitely faced a lot of fears in every country that we went to, but that’s what it was about,” she told MTV News. “It was about going out there and seeing how far I can push myself and seeing what I can discover. Like, ‘Who am I?’ ” She added that given her new, fresh perspective on things, she doesn’t care what anyone has to say these days. “I view the world very differently,” she said. “Everything’s not as big of a deal as people make it out to be, and that’s a really great place to be in. I know there’s nothing that anybody can say about me that will take me to a very low place, because I am stronger.” It was her experiences traveling all over the globe that gave Simpson strength. “The extremes [people] go to to feel beautiful, I think our society puts way, way too much pressure on a woman to feel beautiful,” she said. “But the extremes that we saw in all these different countries were amazing. It was, like, outrageous. “We went to Uganda. We were in fattening huts [where] the fatter you are, the more beautiful you are in this certain village we were in,” she continued. “And so the men want their women to look like cows, because the cows are their prize possession. So the bride-to-be has to gain 90 pounds before she gets married. It does push its limits to what’s healthy, what’s not healthy. I’ve done all kinds of stuff on this trip.” Did you watch Jessica’s new show? What do you think about the lengths people will go to for beauty? Weigh in below! Kenna On The Inspiration Behind ‘Summit On The Summit: Kilimanjaro’

Documentary premieres Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. By James Montgomery Kenna Photo: MTV In 2005, Kenna — who had long heard stories of the majesty and mystery of Mt. Kilimanjaro from his father — decided to climb the peak. He made it to Kosovo Camp, a clearing located some 16,000 feet above sea level (and still 3,000 feet from the summit), and then pushed onward toward the top of the mountain. He didn’t make it. Five years later, he decided to make the trek again, this time in the hope of calling attention to the global clean-water crisis. Both the trip and the cause were personal to Kenna, because when his father was a child in Ethiopia, he lost his brother and friends to water-borne diseases and, as he put it, “I could have been one of those kids.” So, in January, with a crew of nearly 300 backing him up — including fellow musicians Lupe Fiasco and Santigold, actors Jessica Biel , Emile Hirsch and Isabel Lucas, plus a team of scientists, United Nations ambassadors and skilled guides — he headed back up the mountain. (His friend Justin Timberlake intended to join the trek but couldn’t due to scheduling conflicts; Justin introduces the film .) And their trip is documented in “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro,” a 90-minute film that premieres Sunday (March 14) at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. And apart from detailing the group’s massive of scaling Africa’s tallest mountain, the film also contains a symbolic message, one that applies not just to the trek, but to tackling seemingly insurmountable issues like global clean water: that together, we can accomplish great things. “When you go by yourself and you’re on a solo mission, it’s not necessarily something that registers at the end of the day. No one has your back. Getting to the top of Kilimanjaro this time had everything to do with the fact that I had an army with me,” Kenna told MTV News. “Some of us would literally look at each other and say, ‘If you weren’t here, I wouldn’t have made it.’ Our director, Mike Bonfiglio, was basically watching Isabel Lucas, and saw her dedication when she was really, really ill at the top of this mountain. And he, literally, was like ‘She made it, I’ve got to do this.’ ” Unlike his previous attempt, this time around, Kenna would not be denied in his quest to make it to the peak of Kilimanjaro. He had made his mind up, and he wouldn’t be denied: because he had friends with him, and because he knew there were millions of people depending on him to spread his message. “I think what happened is our medic told us, ‘You know what? It’s going to be something you can actually accomplish, even if you’re completely ill and sick and close to dying, it will be fine,’ ” he said. “She made it so we felt like we could deal with being uncomfortable, and at that moment, I was like ‘I don’t care. If anything goes on with me, at this point, I’ve come this far, I’m not going down.’ ” Tune in to “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro” Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. Lupe Fiasco Used ‘Karate Magic’ To Climb Mount Kilimanjaro

‘Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro’ documentary airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on MTV. By James Montgomery Lupe Fiasco Photo: MTV News To make it to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, climbers use high-altitude breathing techniques, a whole lot of rope and some seriously insulated parkas. But not Lupe Fiasco . When he climbed the peak, he did it with some lessons learned from none other than Daniel-san. “I guess it was one of them ‘Karate Kid’ moments, you know? I did martial arts for, like, 20 years. My father was a Grand Master for, like, 40 years before he passed. It’s just one of those lessons that we were taught,” he laughed at the New York premiere of “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro.” “We used to run in the snow barefoot, jump over cars, hang out of trees and do all types of crazy stuff, and that was just part of the training, to understand that it’s you versus yourself. The terrain is always going to exist, it’s always going to be there, and it’s whether you are capable enough to go through it. … Just some little mysticism right there, a little bit of that karate magic to keep the mind going.” And Fiasco — who, along with Kenna, Santigold, Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch and a team of scientists, United Nations ambassadors and experienced mountain guides, took on Kilimanjaro to raise awareness about the global clean-water crisis — most certainly made it to the peak, braving freezing temperatures, dizzying heights and crippling altitude sickness. Of course, while all of those things are what made the trip difficult for him, the toughest hurdle to overcome was mental. “It probably is the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. It wasn’t the altitude sickness; it was more so the battle of myself,” he explained. “Battling, getting the variables right, working the math out about how much water you’re going to drink, how hard you’re going to push yourself, how mad you’re going to get, how much you’re going to think about going home.” Oh, and there was also the lack of certain, uh, creature comforts too. “It was very, very wild when it came to the restroom situation,” he laughed. “There was lot of rationing going on up there.” And while making it to the highest peak in Africa was certainly an accomplishment, Fiasco said he’s most proud of something else both the film and the team managed to accomplish: They made thousands of people aware of the shortage of clean water available to people in the most impoverished nations on earth. And they did it together. “There’s strength in numbers. It’s about mass. You can have one person, and he looks cool holding up a sign, but it’s much better when you have 500 people holding up the same sign,” he said. “There was actually, like, 300 people involved in this climb, and that’s what it took to get everyone to the top. And that’s what it’s going to take to change this global water situation.” Don’t miss “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro,” airing Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.
