Obama Backers In New Hampshire Ask: ‘Why Are You In?’

‘I’m in because he brought the troops home,’ read one poster in the Obama campaign office in Manchester. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Obama supporters in New Hampshire Photo: Getty Images MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — “I’m in because we are the change we’ve been waiting for.” “I’m in because I want my grandchildren to know what polar bears are.” “I’m in because the power is in the voice of the youth.” Those are a few of the handwritten signs penned by volunteers for the Obama 2012 re-election as part of a “Why Are You In?” wall aimed at inspiring them to get out the vote during Tuesday’s (January 10) primary. While most of the attention has been focused on the squabbling among the Republican White House hopefuls in the Granite State, as in last week’s Iowa caucus , the Obama team here has been hard at work training volunteers, making calls and reaching out to the state’s legendary independent voters and committed Democrats to remind them to come out on Tuesday. It’s part of an effort to keep the president’s supporters fired up and ready to go for the general election in November, and 19-year-old volunteer Kathieya Odiah said the chance to see how a campaign works has been eye-opening. “The Obama campaign is basically about having volunteers and having a grassroots campaign, so when we have volunteers come in we always have them make posters and notes about why they come here for Obama,” said Odiah, one of a number of Quinnipiac University students who will spend several weeks of their winter break working for Obama 2012. She pointed to one of the signs she wrote, “I’m in because he brought troops home,” explaining that she felt strongly about the president ending the war in Iraq. The Manchester office, the largest of seven such locations around the state, has housed hundreds of volunteers over the past few months, and during a visit from MTV’s Power of 12 team on Tuesday afternoon, young volunteers were sprawled on couches, on the floor and across several rooms as they clutched their call sheets and reached out to remind voters to make it to the polls before they closed at 8 p.m. Her friend and fellow volunteer, Long Island, New York’s Morgan Farra, 20, said she’s in because the president has helped make college affordable for students like her by increasing the number of Pell grant recipients by 3 million so far. “It’s really important to me because if you don’t have an education, you’re missing out on one of the greatest experiences of your life,” she said. Inspired by the unprecedented grassroots campaign run by Obama in 2008, 19-year-old Natalie Deduck said she has been putting in the 10 to 12-hour days at the Manchester office because she knows the importance of starting early and strong in order to rally the troops again. Jameson Cherilus, 22, is typical of the office’s volunteers. He started his day around 8 a.m. outside an elementary school, where he held up signs for the president and reminded primary voters that Obama was on the ballot before hitting the office for a long day of phone calls. “I’m here because President Obama supports small business,” read another sign that shouted out Flanders Fish Market in East Lyme, Connecticut. “It’s been pretty hard getting my … friends involved in the campaign [because] they honestly don’t understand how important it is to start now even though it’s only January,” said Odiah about the challenges she’s faced while making calls in Manchester and speaking to her peers about what she’s doing. “We have to explain to people that we need to start now. [Once] Republicans choose who they’re going to have for their candidate, they’re already going to have half of the votes. … Yeah, [Obama’s] going to win the primary, but this is a dry run. This is our way of knowing this is what it’s going to look like in November. It’s hard.” MTV is on the scene in New Hampshire! Foo Fighters Hungry For Musical March Madness Success

First-round voting set to close Sunday at midnight. By James Montgomery Foo Fighters Photo: MTV News The Foo Fighters entered the 2011 Musical March Madness tournament as the top seed in the meaty Midwest region, and, so far, they’ve lived up to that high billing, totally dominating their over-matched first-round opponents, 16th-seeded the Damned Things . Vote for your favorite bands now over on the Newsroom blog. With voting on opening-round matchups set to close Sunday at midnight, the Foos hold a commanding 73-27 lead over the Damned Things (who were rallying the troops early) , all but ensuring them a spot in the second round of our tournament. And though they’re poised to move one step closer to hoisting the championship trophy , the Foos remain remarkably nonplussed about not only their title hopes, but the entire MMM bracket, for that matter. “That sounds like exercise or something,” Foos frontman Dave Grohl replied when asked about Musical March Madness. “And ‘bracket’ sounds like ‘brisket’ to me. Sort of makes me want to eat something.” It bears mention that Grohl said this one day after the Foo Fighters kicked off the South by Southwest Music Festival with a raucous surprise set at the Austin, Texas, BBQ shack/venue Stubb’s , which probably explains why he had brisket on the brain. But still, with a field of competitors that still includes heavyweights like 30 Seconds to Mars , Linkin Park and Panic! at the Disco , you’d think the Foos would a least be looking ahead to the tournament’s later rounds. But, again, you’d be wrong. Instead of looking forward, the Foo Fighters are looking backward. Seems, if anything, their Musical March Madness success has stirred up some painful childhood memories — certainly a first in the illustrious two-year history of the tourney. “[It] makes me think of walking down the hallway in high school and being called ‘f–‘ by all the jocks,” guitarist Chris Shiflett said, laughing. “You now what though?” drummer Taylor Hawkins added. “If you saw a picture of Chris in high school, you’d understand.” Will the Foos survive to stir up more bad thoughts for Shiflett? Or will they be felled by one of their fellow titans? Well, that’s really up to you, isn’t it? Voting is now open in all first-round matchups over on the Newsroom blog and closes Sunday night. May the best band win, even if it pains them to do so. MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament is back! Voting on all first-round matchups continues until Sunday, at which point we’ll move on to the second round of the action. All winners are determined by your votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM — but get ready, it’s gonna be a war. Related Photos Bands Hit The Court For MTV’s 2011 Musical March Madness

Robert Pattinson Wonders Why He’s At The Oscars In His #3 MTV Moment

RPattz will debut an exclusive ‘Water for Elephants’ clip and answer fan questions live Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson at the 2009 Academy Awards Photo: Jeff Vespa/WireImage If you ask us, Robert Pattinson officially arrived in Hollywood when “Twilight” won five Golden Popcorn statues at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards — including RPattz’s nods for Best Kiss, Best Fight and Breakthrough Male Performance. But others might argue his Tinseltown coming-out party occurred a few months earlier. In late February ’09, after a weeklong series of rumors had whipped the Twi-nation into a frenzy, Pattinson walked onto an Academy Awards red carpet for the first time. He was not there because he was nominated, but simply because the Academy could not ignore the vampire phenomenon that had ignited the box office — and too many tween hearts to count — the previous fall. It was the biggest night in Hollywood, after all, and its biggest new star just had to be there. Not that he could quite wrap his head around the idea. “It’s insane,” Pattinson exclaimed when we caught up with him on the carpet. “When they first told me about this, I was like, ‘No, no, no, no, no, you’re joking’ — or ‘I’m going to have to do something really stupid like get gunged!’ ” Assuming he’d need to get doused with slime to justify an Oscars appearance, for that reason alone, this awards-season moment deserves to make our countdown of favorite Pattinson moments before the debut of “MTV First: Robert Pattinson” at 8:56 p.m. ET on Friday. But RPattz’s self-deprecating humor aside, it was at the Oscars that his status as the rising young actor in town was solidified. During the ceremony, he took the stage alongside Amanda Seyfried to present a montage of the year’s romantic films, everything from “Mamma Mia!” to “Revolutionary Road” to, yes, “Twilight.” Yet even though footage from the film that made him a star played at the Oscars, he couldn’t quite believe the situation. “I’m so surprised that it worked out the way it did,” he told us of becoming a crush-worthy Hollywood presence. “I was thinking the whole time, ‘I don’t really have the personality to fit into that.’ I’m not really afraid of it. I don’t even know how to play up that. I don’t know if I could ever be cast in a heartthrob role, apart from ‘Twilight,’ which I didn’t know was a heartthrob role.” Don’t miss “MTV First: Robert Pattinson” this Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. Tune in to see RPattz introduce a new “Water for Elephants” clip, followed by a live 30-minute interview on MTV.com. Tweet questions using the hashtag #askrob to get in the conversation! Senate DADT Vote Fails

Supporters of “don't ask, don't tell” repeal in the current lame-duck session of Congress were dealt a major blow Thursday when the U.S. Senate failed to move forward on the national defense bill. The vote to proceed to debate on the defense bill, of which DADT repeal is a component, was 57-40 —three votes shy of the 60 votes that Democrats needed. Though Republican senator Susan Collins of Maine voted to support moving forward on the defense bill, no Republicans colleague followed suit. Senators crucial to repeal voted No, including senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Scott Brown of Massachusetts, and Olympia Snowe of Maine. The failed vote comes after intense negotiations in the senate, where independent Sen. Joe Lieberman served as a de facto intermediary between Democratic Senate majority leader Reid and Collins, who supports the repeal of “don't ask, don't tell” but urged a “fair and open” process for the Defense Authorization spending bill. On Wednesday evening, Reid had postponed a full vote in the Senate on the bill that includes language to repeal the military's ban on openly gay and lesbian troops. Reid on Thursday criticized Republican opposition to moving ahead on the defense bill as harmful not only to DADT repeal, but to the armed forces as a whole. “Despite the critical importance for our troops, for our nation, and for justice that we get this bill done, we have not been able to reach an agreement,” Reid said earlier this afternoon. “And I regret to say that it is our troops who will pay the price for our inability to overcome partisan political posturing.” Update: Servicemembers United executive director Alex Nicholson called on Congress to pass DADT repeal as a stand-alone bill, issuing the following statement after the vote: “This was a major failure on the part of the Senate to simply do its job and pass an annual defense authorization bill. Politics prevailed over responsibility today, and now more than one million American servicemembers, including tens of thousands of gay and lesbian troops, are worse off as a result. “Since the votes are there in isolation, the Senate should still consider a stand-alone bill to repeal the 'don't ask, don't tell' law before adjourning for the winter holidays,” Nicholson said. added by: TimALoftis

Kathy Griffin Bikini Bod

Kathy Griffin, who was entertaining the troops as host of Sunday#39;s VH1 Divas Salute The Troops at the Miramar Marine base in San Diego, tells us her killer abs didn#39;t come easy. Kathy Griffin, who just turned 50, stood up fearlessly in front of troops at a San Diego marine base wearing only a camouflage bikini and an ammo belt. And, boy, did she work for that bod. “First of all, I work a lot,” Griffin says. “Running around onstage making fun of celebrities is a workout in itself!” But

Katy Perry Gets Patriotic With ‘California Gurls,’ ‘Firework’ For ‘VH1 Divas’

The pop star traded whipped cream for stars and stripes as she saluted the troops. By Aly Semigran Katy Perry performs “Firework” during “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images It was that fitting Katy Perry did a live version her joyously inescapable summer smash “California Gurls” for the service men and women at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego for “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops,” and then closed the night out with “Firework.” Earlier in the show, Perry performed “California Gurls,” the song not only propelled her to the top of the charts in 2010 (it spent six consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100) and helped her snag one of her four Grammy nominations earlier this week (“Gurls” garnered Perry and her musical partner Snoop Dogg a nom for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals), but it’s an unconventional love letter to the very state where the show was taking place. (Click here to see photos from “VH1 Divas Salute The Troops” .) The never-subtle singer left her whipped-cream-shooting bra at home (perhaps it’s not terribly useful in combat?) and arrived onstage via a stars-and-stripes parachute dressed head to toe in red, white, and blue attire. Perry’s onstage antics while performing “Gurls” on previous shows, like the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, have always been fitting of the bubblegum pop ditty, and her “Divas” set was no different. Snoop may have been regrettably MIA, but Perry had a set of scantily clad backup singers and dancers to help elevate her. Despite a slight crack in her voice during the song’s rising “Ohhh-oh-oh”s, “California Gurls” still got a warm reception and melted more than a few popsicles in San Diego. For Sunday’s show, Perry also found time to recall ’40s glam with Keri Hilson and Jennifer Nettles for a cover of “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” and ’80s pop with Nicki Minaj for “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” But that was hardly the end of Perry’s marathon evening, as the pop star did another, final outfit change to perform “Firework.” Looking rather Jessica Rabbit-esque in a bombshell-red, sparkly dress paired long red gloves, Perry tapped into the emotional tune, which took on a whole new meaning with this particular crowd. While the song is less an ode to patriotism as it is to individuality, lyrics like “Just own the night/ Like the 4th of July,” and “Come on, let your colors burst” turned out to be unexpectedly apropos of the event. The show-stopper felt even more patriotic when paired with the footage of, naturally, fireworks exploding in the background. Not one to fizzle out, Perry (who was once again joined by backup singers and dancers) eventually had onstage pyrotechnics and actual fireworks lighting up the night sky. “Firework” which currently resides at the #1 spot on digital download charts, also feels like Perry’s most personal single of her Teenage Dream album to date, something that was quite evident in her final, shining performance of the night.
