Dear God, The Les Grossman Movie Is Real — and It’s ‘Heartfelt’

I’m willing to give on-the-brink screenwriter Michael Bacall the benefit of the doubt based on what I’ve seen and heard of him so far, from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (which he co-wrote) to the Todd Phillips-produced teen party comedy Project X and 21 Jump Street (both of which he has scripting and story credits on), the latter of which is earning surprisingly glowing reactions from the blogoscenti. But I might have to draw some sort of line at the Tropic Thunder spin-off starring a fat, hairy Tom Cruise as slimy Hollywood exec Les Grossman , which apparently is not only really, seriously a thing but is, as Bacall describes, “a pretty heartfelt story.” “I wrote it for R because we had precedent with Tropic Thunder ,” he told Collider recently, promising a script unhampered by PG-13 boundaries. “It’s actually a pretty heartfelt story. I had a lot of meetings with Mr. Cruise and Mr. Stiller and it was crazy, it was a blast. I think we came up with some really fun stuff to give you an insight into who the guy is, so I’m hopeful that that’ll get up and running soon.” Cruise, he admits, may be pretty busy with non-Les Grossman gigs for a good while, so it’s hard to say when this insightful look at the man who won 8 Oscars, earned 400 million dollars at the box office, and saved Tugg Speedman’s career will hit theaters. I can’t imagine anything more exhausting than watching Cruise yell and dance to Flo Rida for the length of a feature film. Project X , meanwhile, captures the youth side of a dick-obsessed male culture if with an overabundance of sleaze, and 21 Jump Street is earning some of the most solid advance buzz I’ve heard in a while where high profile studio fodder is concerned. So maybe there’s hope yet? Then again, Bacall is not only a scribe, he’s an actor; while he most recently appeared in Inglorious Basterds , his appearance on the infamously terrible Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch: Make My Video Sega game actually makes me like him, although it proves that not all high concept projects built around macho gyrating personalities are good ideas. • Screenwriter Michael Bacall Gives Update on Les Grossman Movie; Says It’s “A Pretty Heartfelt Story” and it Was Written to Be Rated R [Collider]

Happy 48th Birthday, Tom Cruise!

Happy birthday to Tom Cruise, who is kind of the man. Yes, he jumps on couches, gets married a lot and shares opinions on political and social issues that many would consider out of the mainstream. We know this. But what’s really wrong with the guy? He’s been one of Hollywood’s biggest stars for almost three decades and for all the weirdness, is basically harmless. He’s fun, makes cool movies and seems to care most about being a good husband to Katie Holmes and a good dad to kids Isabella, Connor and little Suri. What more can you ask for, really? Tom Cruise is 48 years old today. Man, has the actor ever aged well … in reality, he looks nothing like his hilarious, middle-aged alter ego Les Grossman! From Risky Business to A Few Good Men , the Mission: Impossible series, Tropic Thunder and Knight and Day , he’s been one of the most successful stars ever. For good reason. So cheers to you, Tom, on this third of July. Many happy returns, and keep up the awesome work. Click to enlarge some classic Tom Cruise pictures below …

Les Grossman Gets Love From Tom Felton, Paris Hilton, Other Celebs

‘He’s the best dancer in the world, man,’ ‘Harry Potter Star’ says of Tom Cruise’s alter-ego. By Jocelyn Vena Tom Cruise in character as Les Grossman at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Paramount There was one man who had everyone buzzing backstage at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday. That man wasn’t Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Mark Wahlberg or even host Aziz Ansari. It was Tom Cruise’s movie-studio exec alter-ego, Les Grossman . And with news that the “Tropic Thunder” character is getting a spin-off flick of his own, no one in Hollywood isn’t safe from Les’ tyranny. Not that they’re complaining. “Performance of the evening,” “Harry Potter” star and Best Villain winner Tom Felton told MTV News of Les’ dance-off with Jennifer Lopez. “I love Tom Cruise as Les Grossman. That’s awesome. Les all day. He’s the best dancer in the world, man. I got to get some lessons off him. He’s got some tight moves.” Seth Green also sang Grossman’s praises, noting that whatever Les does is “pretty amazing.” Paris Hilton added, “Tom Cruise onstage was really funny.” “Percy Jackson” star Logan Lerman admits that even though the movie mogul can be a rather foul-mouthed, somewhat polarizing individual, he still loves that guy. “I’m a huge Les Grossman fan,” he revealed. “It was really cool. Les Grossman — he’s the man!” “Twilight Saga” and “The Last Airbender” star Jackson Rathbone called Cruise’s Grossman the highlight of the Movie Awards. “My favorite moment of tonight’s show? I gotta say Tom Cruise as Les Grossman,” he explained. “I think he stole the entire show tonight. He really did.” Lo Bosworth and Stephanie Pratt of “The Hills” also praised the producer, but Bosworth might be partial. “I mean, Les Grossman is my agent,” Lo dished. “That’s why I’m such a superstar. Didn’t you know?” Are you looking forward to the Les Grossman flick? Tell us in the comments! Tom Cruise To Revisit Les Grossman Role In New Movie

Cruise and Ben Stiller are producing the comedy based on the ‘Tropic Thunder’ and MTV Movie Awards character. By Josh Wigler Les Grossman at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Paramount If you thought Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Michael Cera, Will Smith and the rest of the Hollywood elite were safe from movie-studio exec Les Grossman’s fiery insults and cutthroat business ethics, think again. In a press release issued Wednesday (June 9), Paramount Pictures and MTV Films announced the development of a comedy focused on Grossman, the foul-mouthed movie producer played by Tom Cruise in “Tropic Thunder” and the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . Cruise, Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfield of Red Hour Films are producing the project with “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” screenwriter Michael Bacall tackling the script. Unsurprisingly, the press release phrases the movie’s development as if Grossman were actually a real person — which, of course, he is! Tom Cruise is said to be in talks to portray the media mogul in the film. As for the film’s plot, “Grossman” himself explained: “To quote my great friend Kirk Lazarus, ‘I don’t read the script, the script reads me.’ ” “Les Grossman’s life story is an inspiring tale of the classic human struggle to achieve greatness against all odds,” said Stiller, Grossman’s “Tropic Thunder” co-star. “He has assured me he plans to, quote, ‘F—ing kill the sh– out of this movie and make “Citizen f—ing Kane” look like a piece-of-crap home movie by the time we are done.’ I am honored to be working with him.” Paramount Film Group President Adam Goodman added: “Everything I learned in this business, I’ve learned from Les. I started out as his assistant, and from the first day he threw his desk at me when I got his lunch order wrong, I have loved him like a father. I am forever grateful to Ben and Stuart Cornfield and their ability to secure his highly coveted life rights.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Van Sant Actually Wanted to Direct Breaking Dawn

Back when Summit was pursuing directors like Gus Van Sant and Sofia Coppola to direct the final Twilight installment, Breaking Dawn , I figured they were simply shooting for the moon. In the new issue of New York , however, the always candid Bret Easton Ellis reveals that Van Sant went after the job himself. “You can make a lot of money doing that,” Ellis whispered. Let’s hope that Bill Condon gives the shirtless werewolves some skateboards to use as a tribute to his fallen comrade. [ New York ]

Taylor Lautner Is Les Grossman’s Latest Victim In MTV Movie Awards Promo

For more from the ‘Tropic Thunder’ mega mogul, tune in to MTV this Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. By Kara Warner Tinseltown’s resident “mega mogul” Les Grossman is back with another MTV Movie Awards promo. It seems the “Tropic Thunder” scene-stealer’s VIP clientele is endless. His last spot featured Robert Pattinson , one of the biggest stars in the Movie Awards universe, and in the latest video, Grossman has a chat with the other “Twilight” stud, Taylor Lautner. The video opens with Grossman’s customary method of conversation: laying into an unknown producer with a string of insults and profanity. “Mr. ‘Avatar,’ sugart–s,” he dismisses the minion over his bluetooth headset. “I don’t give a sh– about the laws of physics, because I want it in 4-D! Do it!” Grossman ends the call, then turns his attention to the teen heartthrob. “This is going to be a great show,” he tells Lautner. Looking unaffected by (or used to) Les’ rant, Taylor responds, “Les, we already talked about this, remember? My agents told you. That weekend is my best friend’s wedding and I’m the … ” “Best man,” Grossman interjects. “Understood. All cool. Bring in Taylor’s double,” he commands, upon which a stand-in is brought in — a man clearly years older than Lautner swirling a glass of whiskey, dressed in what looks to be a tuxedo he may or may not have slept in the night before. Lautner’s reaction is slightly annoyed. “Nobody’s going to believe this is me,” he says. “I’m sorry, which Taylor said that?” Grossman says, trying to play off the fact that Lautner’s “double” is a joke. He eventually relents and tells the double to “f— off.” “Do you smell that?” Grossman asks, returning his full attention and sinister grin to Lautner. “We just took this sh– to the next level. Pound it out, big guy.” Lautner reluctantly bumps Grossman’s meaty fists. For more of Lautner and Grossman, tune in to the MTV Movie Awards this Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV! Your filthy hair sent my fat-*ss kid to Space Camp four times!” It’s great stuff. Watch now: MTV Movie Awards Promo The MTV Movie Awards will air on June 6.
