Clive Davis’ party still went on last night despite the shocking news of Whitney Houston’s death last night: Whitney Houston “would have wanted the music to go on,” said industry mogul Clive Davis, who opted to proceed with his annual Grammy-eve party at the Beverly Hilton, where hours earlier the pop icon he signed and mentored was pronounced dead at 48. “She loved music and she loved this night that celebrates music,” said Davis, adding that Houston’s family requested that the party continue. The mood, however, at least at the evening’s start, was far from celebratory. Attendees filing into Davis’ event hugged one another, wearing dour or dazed expressions, and many were seen shaking their heads, even as music at the hotel thumped loudly. Davis, who spotted a 19-year-old Houston at a showcase in Sweetwaters supper club in Manhattan, has been hosting a pre-Grammy event for more than three decades. Houston was to attend the gala. The Internet was abuzz with rumors today that North Korea’s newly installed leader, Kim Jong Un , was assassinated during a trip to Beijing, but U.S. officials are debunking the reports as not true: Several U.S. officials contacted by ABC News said there was no validity to the reports that originated on a Chinese social media site and soon spread to Twitter. “There’s nothing to this, ” said one U.S. official, who added that there were no indications that the reports were true. Another U.S. official said, “Our experts are monitoring the situation and we see no abnormal activity on the [Korean] peninsula and nothing that credits that tweet as accurate.” North Korean troop movements on the North Korean side of the border are often an indicator that the country’s leadership is preparing for tense situations, much as what happened when Kim Jong Un assumed power late last year. Internet rumors were not the first time that Kim has been the focus of social media rumors. In early January, postings to Sina Weibo began to appear claiming that Kim had been overthrown in a military coup. Sesame Street and its production company the Sesame Workshop do make a lot of money from product licensing, but not nearly enough to cover expenses. According to the company’s most recent financial report, the Workshop earned about $45 million in merchandising during 2010, which accounted for one-third of its total revenue. The rest came mainly from distribution fees and royalties, and from an assortment of private donors, corporate sponsors, and government grants. 45 mili?? That’s it? But wait, there’s more… That may sound like more than enough to make a puppet-based television show, but according to the same report, the operating expenses for the Sesame Workshop totaled about $133 million, including $37 million for production and development of TV shows at home and abroad; $41 million for production and distribution of non-TV content including apps, home video, and live entertainment; and a hair under $7 million for “Muppet acquisition.” The rest of the money goes towards education, outreach and fundraising expenses. Only about $4 million comes from PBS annually, and in return PBS only gets back SOME of the cost. Everyone grew up watching Sesame Street, could you imagine it not being on for future generations?
