Donald Trump: Electoral College Voters to Block President-Elect From White House?

In the two weeks since Donald Trump was elected president , the reality television star-turned political neophyte has done little to assure the millions who are concerned about his temperamental instability or his impractical and incendiary campaign promises that he is in fact prepared to assume the highest office in American politics. In fact, the only time Trump made the slightest effort to convince those who didn’t vote for him that he still has their best interests at heart was during an interview with 60 Minutes , in which he half-heartedly called for his more extremist followers to stop engaging in race-based intimidation. Other than that, Trump has shown little to know concern with regard to hate crimes committed in his name; he appointed a man with ties to the White Nationalist movement as his chief strategist; and he’s engaged in petty online feuds with the casts of SNL and Hamilton , despite the fact that his thin-skinned inability to withstand criticism has frequently led to doubts about his ability to lead. On top of all that, his administration is still grappling with several disconcerting legal matters, such as Trump’s recent settlement of a $25 million fraud suit (despite promises to fight the charges in court); his charitable foundation’s admission of unethical and possibly illegal self-dealing in a 2015 tax filing; and concerns that Trump is already in violation of the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause . Candidate Trump promised Americans a more “presidential” Trump in the event that he should win the election. With less than two months remaining until Inauguration Day, he has yet to deliver. Now, an unexpected group of powerful protesters is making a last-ditch attempt to block Trump from assuming office. While their efforts may prove too little, too late, they may also save future generations from demagogues seeking to con their way into public office. According to the New York Post , at least six Democrats on the Electoral College are prepared to serve as “faithless electors” and abandon Hillary Clinton in order to vote for Republican candidates other than Trump. There hope is that GOP electors will follow suit, thus costing Trump the 270 votes he needs to secure the White House, and sending the decision of who will be our next president to the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. As you’re probably, aware Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by more than 1.7 million votes, with several million more yet to be counted, most of them in Democratic strongholds, such as California. The Democratic electors looking to block Trump have embarked on a quixotic mission, as it seems highly unlikely that they’ll be able to convince 37 of their GOP counterparts to jump ship and send the nation into an even worse state of political upheaval. However, their efforts may bring attention to the problematic nature of the Electoral College, eventually leading to crucial reforms or even its abolishment. “Reform going forward has a better chance of succeeding than this effort,” Kermit Roosevelt, a professor at University of Pennsylvania Law School, told The Post. “Most people do think if you get more votes you should win the election.” View Slideshow: Donald Trump Wins Presidency, Twitter Reacts President-elect Trump has yet to respond to news of this latest effort to block him from office. We imagine he’ll eventually share his views in a terse, 140-character statement to the American people.

Hillary Clinton: Activists Urge Candidate to Challenge Election Results in Three Swing States

On Wednesday, November 9, shortly after 11:50 am, Hillary Clinton uttered the words that tens of millions of Americans never thought they would hear: “Donald Trump is going to be our president,” Clinton told a crowd of supporters who had gathered in New York, many certain they would be celebrating an historic victory. “We owe him an open mind and a chance to lead.” It was a gracious acceptance of a crushing defeat, and it seemed the speech was likely to serve as the conclusion of Clinton’s decades-long, glass-ceiling-shattering political career. Now, however, a group of election lawyers and prominent computer scientists are insisting that in light of new findings about the integrity of the 2016 election, Clinton owes it to the American people to contest Trump’s victory. According to New York magazine, the group – led by voting-rights attorney John Bonifaz and J. Alex Halderman, the director of the University of Michigan Center for Computer Security and Society – revealed this week that they’ve uncovered persuasive evidence that the election results in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania may have been hacked . All three states went for Trump in 2016 after being won by President Obama in 2012. If they had gone blue again this year, it’s Clinton, not Trump, who would have secured the necessary 270 electoral votes to win the election. At this point, the group is not publicly speaking on its findings, and is instead focusing on privately lobbying the Clinton campaign to take action. Sources say on Thursday of last week, activists held a conference call with Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta and campaign general counsel Marc Elias. The group reportedly presented findings indicating that in Wisconsin, Clinton received 7 percent fewer votes in counties that relied on electronic voting than in counties with paper ballots. Based on those numbers, analysts believe she may have been denied upwards of 30,000 votes in that state. She lost Wisconsin by just 27,000 votes. Despite Clinton’s concession, there’s still ample reason to call Trump’s victory into question. In addition to the fact that he lost the popular vote by more 1.7 million ballots (with several million more votes left to be counted, most in Democratic strongholds like California and New York), Trump may find himself coping with an Electoral College revolt led by “faithless electors” hoping to leave the decision of who will be our next president in the hands of the GOP-led House of Representatives. View Slideshow: Donald Trump Wins Presidency, Twitter Reacts The new information possibly indicating widespread election fraud may represent Clinton’s last, best chance at delegitimizing Trump’s victory. Unfortunately, her campaign is running out of time in which to contest the results. The deadline in Wisconsin to file for a recount is Friday; in Pennsylvania, it’s Monday; and Michigan is next Wednesday.

Wait….: Alt-Right (White Supremacist) Group Chants “Hail, Trump,” Praises His Victory With Nazi Salute [Video]

Just to give you a little context…that is White Nationalist leader Richard B. Spencer, addressing roughly 200 “alt-right” enthusiasts in Washington over the weekend about how good Trump’s win is for their agenda . Mind you, their agenda calls for “peaceful ethnic cleansing,” among other Nazi-reminiscent values. SMH. Somehow Trump supporters will try (and fail miserably) to tell us we aren’t seeing the blatantly racist isht we’re looking at with our own eyes right now. The Atlantic

Hamilton vs. Donald Trump: The Feud No One Saw Coming!

The most popular musical in Broadway history feuding with the second-most popular Presidential candidate of 2016. On Friday night, Vice President-Elect Mike Pence attended a showing of Hamilton, getting booed lustily on his way in to the theater and then receiving a speech from actor Brandon Victor Dixon on his way out of the theater. It was pretty remarkable and most definitely in precedented. “We welcome you, and we truly thank you for joining us here at Hamilton: An American Musical – we really do,” Dixon said on stage. He continued: “We are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. “But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values, and work on behalf of all of us . All of us. “We truly thank you for sharing this show, this wonderful American story told by a diverse group of men and women of different colors, creeds and orientations.” What specific beefs do the cast of Hamilton have with Pence? The lead star of the show is gay and Pence has actively supported the concept of gay conversion therapy, in which homosexuals are taken away and essentially tortured until they “convert” to heterosexuality. He has also said that marriage equality would lead to “societal collapse.” In 2013, Pence signed a bill to jail same-sex couples in Indiana for applying for a marriage license. So the cast of the production took this as an opportunity to send a message to Pence. Fairly? Unfairly? It’s clear where the President-Elected stands on that question. Tweeted Donald Trump in light of this incident: “Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing. This should not happen!” And also: “The Theater must always be a safe and special place. The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!” It’s unclear how the theater was un safe in this situation and one could easily argue that this type of speech is exactly what makes it special. One could also laugh over Donald Trump telling anyone at all to “apologize” over being “rude.” But we’ll let readers choose a side in this Hamilton vs. Trump feud. We’ll just give Dixon a chance to respond to Trump’s above Tweets. “@realDonaldTrump conversation is not harassment sir,” he wrote online. “And I appreciate @mike_pence for stopping to listen.” Lin-Manuel Miranda – the show’s Pulitzer-Prize winning creator and former star – also stood behind the actions of his cast. “Proud of @HamiltonMusical,” he wrote. “Proud of @BrandonVDixon, for leading with love. And proud to remind you that ALL are welcome at the theater.” Check out Dixon’s public speech to Pence below: Hamilton Cast Delivers Speech to Mike Pence Do you think it was deserved? Sound off now!

Jeff Sessions Selected to Be U.S. Attorney General

It looks like Jeff Sessions will be our next U.S. Attorney General. The senator from Alabama has been nominated to this vital position by President-Elect Donald Trump, who has once again stirred up quite a bit of controversy before getting into the Oval Office. Sessions is a 69-year old staunch Conservative who often campaigned alongside Trump. He has been an outspoken supporter of the former Celebrity Apprentice star for months. But that is not the controversial part, unless you think scandal ought to follow around anyone who advocated Donald Trump for President. Sessions formerly worked as a prosecutor and was elected into the Senate in 1996. He currently serves on the Judiciary Committee and is best known for his strong opposition to immigration reform, along with his objection to bipartisan proposals to cut mandatory minimum prison sentences. He has supporter Trump’s proposal to build a wall along the Mexican border and he is all about deporting illegal aliens from America. According to The New York Times, Sessions was nominated in 1986 by the late president Ronald Reagan for a federal judgeship. However, this nomination was rejected due to a series of racially charged comments the politician had made in the past. At the time, Sessions’ nomination was only one of two to be rejected by the panel in almost five decades. What sort of divisive remarks has Sessions been accused of uttering? He had earlier branded civil rights organizations such as the NAACP and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference as “un-American” and “Communist-inspired.” He also once said that the Ku Klux Klan was fine by him, although he lost some respect for its members when he learned they smoked pot. (Sessions does not deny making this comment, but says it was made in jest.) Then there’s the case of Thomas H. Hughes. An African American prosecutor, he alleges that Sessions referred to him as “boy.” “Jeff has been a highly respected member of the U.S. Senate for 20 years,” Trump said in a statement. “He is a world-class legal mind and considered a truly great Attorney General and US Attorney in the state of Alabama. Jeff is greatly admired by legal scholars and virtually everyone who knows him.” Millions of people around the globe are growing more and more concerned by the kinds of people Trump is assigning to key White House positions. He previously announced that Steve Bannon would serve as a chief advisor and… well… you can learn more about Steve Bannon here: View Slideshow: Steve Bannon: Who is Trump’s White Nationalist Chief Advisor? Sessions was one of President Barack Obama’s loudest opponents, voting against his nominees to the Supreme Court from his post on the Judiciary Committee and opposing Obama’s other major domestic initiatives. He also seems to be in favor of Trump’s ban on Muslims. “He simply said, and the way I understand it is, that we should slow down. Let’s have a pause and begin to analyze where the threats are coming from,” Sessions told CNN in June, amidst questions about whether or not Trump’s position was shifting. “We have a toxic ideology, hopefully very small within Islam; certainly most people, most Muslims don’t agree with this violent, jihadist approach. “And we need to figure out a better way to identify that.” What do you think of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General? What about Mike Pompeo as CIA Director? Learn more about the latter below: Mike Pompeo to Be Named C.I.A. Director

Protest Pays Off: Trump’s Name Scraped Off Property After Building Residents Petition For Removal

Donald Trump’s Name Removed From His Own Property Remember when we told you that residents in Trump-owned high rise “Trump Place” were so embarrassed to have the now President-elect’s name emblazoned accross their homes that they were petitioning to have it removed ? Welp, they were successful. Workers were spotted taking down the gaudy gold “Trump Place” letters from one of the three buildings on the Upper West Side of Manhattan early on Wednesday morning. And residents couldn’t be happier. According to Huffington Post , residents just felt like the name put too much extra on their lives when all they want to do is get home from work and put the groceries away. “It’s nuts that we’re now living in a place that is advertising values that none of us believe in,” petition co-author Linda Gottlieb told CNBC. The petition cited Trump’s “appalling treatment of women, his history of racism, his attacks on immigrants, his mockery of the disabled, his tax avoidance, his outright lying,” that the name insults many of the minorities and immigrants who work in the building, and that the naming deal increases Trump’s net worth. The three buildings were under contract to bear Trump’s name for a time, but that contract has ended, according to Marty McKenna, a spokesman for the buildings’ landlord, Equity Residential. The buildings will now be called simply by their Riverside Drive street addresses instead. Hey, as long as the people who pay the rent (and actually bother to pay their taxes) are happy, then that’s all that matters, right? Getty/Google Maps
