Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens & James Franco Get Raw(ish) In Spring Breakers: ‘We Freed Ourselves’

Prancing around in a fluorescent bikini while going on a partying and crime-fueled rampage through the so-called “red neck riviera” — that could be the one sentence log-line for Toronto’s Spring Breakers , which arrived in North America after its first premiere last week in Venice . Fascination with former Disney star Selena Gomez ‘s romp through the new film in a not-quite-so-squeaky-clean role continued on this side of the pond but Gomez, director Harmony Korine and fellow stars James Franco , Vanessa Hudgens , Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine provided a few racy laughs of their own in Canada’s biggest city Friday. Harmony Korine even joked that a few rugged gentlemen on spring break were taken by Gomez’s presence while they shot the feature. “All these thick-necked jock dudes were rubbing up against Selena,” he said. The cast said they had themselves never been on a spring break, but Harmony Korine surrounded the cast with people doing just that while they were in St. Petersburg, FL in what Rachel Korine described as a “youth rite of passage.” But before heading to the shoot and to those soon-to-be-famous bikinis, the women in the film did a bit of a pre-party get-together to set the mood for the film and at the request of Harmony Korine. Vanessa Hudgens hinted that the group likely took on some of the trappings of spring break before heading off for their celluloid version in front of the camera. “In the beginning, we hung out before shooting. We were girls being completely raw and we freed ourselves and did what we wanted. We were able to be completely free and push each other.” James Franco first came on board on the film, speaking with Korine about the concept well before actual shooting began. He crafted his character, who is a local thug that bails the girls out of jail after they hold up a dining joint in order to fund their spring break, by using props and music sent over by Korine. “Harmony is a master at finding locations and people and having them add texture [to his films],” he said. “He sent me music and images which helped me create my character. Looks and surfaces are very important in this film.” “But I think we made him our bitch!” Hudgens shot back with a laugh. As in Venice, Gomez was peppered with questions about her Disney entree to stardom and how a film like Spring Breakers will factor into her fan base, but the 20 year-old actress said that she decided to go for it, while acknowledging the role may be off-putting for some of her young admirers. “When my series ended, I was invited to do a couple of films. I thought the independent film route would be best for me, and I decided that if I’m going to do it, I’d like to do it with Harmony.” Continuing she said, “The biggest challenge is that I have a younger generation of fans who follow my music, shows and clothing line. Everything I do is for them and this may not be so accessible to them. But the other side is that people put you in a box and it is a challenge for me because some may not take me seriously because of the brand I have — that I’m fortunate to have — but it’s also about doing things that I just want to do for me.” Gomez was the first of the women cast in the film which Harmony Korine said he imagined long before writing the screenplay. He auditioned Gomez in his living room in Nashville, TN but worried that he might scare her off before they had a chance to work together. “Selena auditioned in my living room. When she came down to Nashville, I flipped over all of this crazy art I have in my house because I didn’t want to spook her,” he said. “I think he thought I was super, super Christian so he was hiding everything,” laughed Gomez. Today In Inspired Casting: Al Pacino As Joe Paterno?

Deadline reports that Al Pacino has been tapped to play famed Penn State fixture Joe Paterno, the legendary football coach who enjoyed the winningest reign in history before the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal marred his legacy. A little side-by-side photo comparison shows that Pacino bears a resemblance to the late coach, if you squint a bit; after a spotty run in film and TV of late (veering from the TV movie You Don’t Know Jack , which earned him an Emmy and Golden Globe, to the Adam Sandler comedy Jack & Jill — let’s not even talk about Dunkaccino ), JoePa’s rise and fall might offer some meaty material for the Oscar-winner. Though the project is still in development — ICM is shopping it around, according to Deadline — Pacino is attached, and a script will be adapted from Joe Posnanski’s New York Times bestselling biography Paterno . WATCH: Pitbull Makes His Acting Debut (As Pitbull!) In Shaolin Drug Cartel Actioner Blood Money

This week the Miami-based rapper/ Men In Black 3 ditty composer known as Pitbull makes his acting debut in the martial arts/action film Blood Money playing himself, naturally — a rapper who just happens to drop club bangers before giving sage drug game advice like “Go hard or go home!” to stone-faced visitors after the show. WHY THE HELL NOT. And yes, Blood Money is actually about a Shaolin priest who becomes a hitman after his family is killed, and it stars Zheng Liu, billed as “the next Bruce Lee,” not to mention Hong Kong legend Gordon Freaking Liu ( The 36th Chamber of Shaolin , 8 Diagram Pole Fighter , Kill Bill ). My takeaway from that is: At long last, bald twins Pitbull and Gordon Liu are in the same movie! Without further ado, watch Pitbull singing his own “Miami Boyz” and advising a wannabe Scarface in Movieline’s exclusive clip. I’d love to have seen Pitbull rap with dancing ladies, dispense advice to criminals, and then also do somersaults over speeding motorcycles and throw knives and roundhouse kick baddies like Zheng Liu does in the rest of this movie. Alas, the Pitbull of Blood Money is all about the music. Perhaps in his next movie he’ll join the ranks of MCs-turned-action stars and defeat an army of cartel thugs with his sick party beats or something. Meanwhile, Blood Money ‘s “next Bruce Lee” should make this an intriguing view for action fans; with the exception of those clearly CG throwing blades that Liu keeps hurling into his enemies, the action relies on practical stunts rather than digital ones. I’m told Liu actually broke a steel bar on his head and the sound you hear was actually captured on location and not foleyed in afterwards. The elder Liu, a living legend, reportedly suffered a stroke last year and has been relatively absent from the public eye since. He also has a role in RZA’s upcoming The Man With The Iron Fists , and from his few scenes in the trailer it looks like he still had it whenever he filmed this movie. Blood Money is out on DVD/Blu-ray now and is available on VOD. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Linklater, Hawke, And Delpy Went Ahead And Filmed Before Midnight: First Look At The Before Sunrise Threequel

Apparently Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, and Julie Delpy went ahead and filmed Before Midnight , their sequel to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset , without telling anyone about it. But there’s something about the loose intimacy of Céline and Jesse’s ambling, every now and again relationship that makes the idea of the trio making their next movie in secret so fitting. Hit the jump for the first image of Hawke and Delpy in the Greece-set Before Midnight , which will court buyers this week at Toronto . According to Deadline, filming wrapped yesterday. The trio, who share writing credits again after earning a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for Before Sunset , issued the following statement: “It’s great to be back together again, this time in beautiful Greece to revisit the lives of Celine and Jesse nine years after Jesse was about to miss his flight.” [ Deadline ]

Female Saudi Filmmaker Makes History In Venice

The Master , the latest from Paul Thomas Anderson starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix , have captured the zeitgeist of Venice Film Festival talk in the first half of the festival, but perhaps more quietly, director Haifaa Al Mansour is making celluloid history with her film Wadjda . Al Mansour is Saudi Arabia’s first female director, in a country that forbids movie theaters. The film follows the story of a determined 10 year-old girl living in the country’s capital, Riyadh. Shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, according to the director, the film follows young Wadjda as she lives her life trying to dodge the strict rules of Saudi society both at home and school. According to a profile of the film in Reuters , she is disciplined for not wearing her veil, listening to pop music and not “hiding in front of men.” But her sites set on a green bicycle that she decides to raise money to get it. Her plan is to learn Koranic verses and take part in a religious competition at school. If she can raise the money, she will buy the bike. And in the meantime, she will – at least temporarily – show herself as a renewed pious girl. “It’s easy to say it’s a difficult, conservative place for a woman and do nothing about it, but we need to push forward and hope we can help make it a more relaxed and tolerant society,” she said after her film premiered in Venice, speaking to reporters in English, according to Reuters. She added that the restrictive kingdom has started to open up for women, noting that female athletes traveled to London for the recent Olympics and that its monarch, King Abdullah has opened up better educational opportunities for women and they now can vote in municipal elections. “”It is not like before, although I can’t say it’s like heaven,” she said. “Society won’t just accept it, people will put pressure on women to stay home, but we have to fight.” Still she did encounter some social-stigma while filming in the country’s capital despite having received permission. Locals in some more conservative areas of the city did not like seeing a female filmmaker directing with men on the set and at times used a walkie-talkie in order to give instruction to her male actors. Wadjda is playing out of competition at the Venice Film Festival. [ Source: Reuters ]

Today In Hollywood: Meet The Cast Of The U.K. Hit The Inbetweeners

Across the pond in the U.K., the popular sitcom The Inbetweeners earned two BAFTA nominations and the Audience Award and ran for three seasons, depicting the coming-of-age mortifications of four teenage boys (Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley, and Blake Harrison) stumbling their way through life, girls, and the assorted humiliations of young adulthood. The Inbetweeners stars will hit up a few iconic Hollywood locations today to promote their U.S. debut, and really – if you’re a fan, what better way is there to celebrate the facepalm-worthy exploits of the Inbetweeners crew than by scarfing down a few Pink’s hot dogs or watching them (fingers crossed) take the Saddle Ranch mechanical bull for a spin? The Possession And Lawless Top Labor Day Box Office

Two newcomers, The Possession and Lawless topped the overall box office over Labor Day weekend, ending a summer that ended with not much of a bang. Overall, the Summer theatrical season fell nearly 3% from last year, winding up at $4.275 billion (vs $4.4 billion). The Expendables 2 , which had topped the box office for two weekends, made a landing in the third spot with only slightly less screens. Today’s grosses reflect a Friday through Monday Labor Day weekend numbers. The per cent change in revenue vs. the previous weekend only considers Friday – Sunday numbers. 1. The Possession Gross: $21.3 million Screens: 2,816 (PSA: $7,564) Week: 1 The end of the unofficial summer period proved softer than the beginning, though Lionsgate’s The Possession ended The Expendables 2 two-week reign atop the box office with a solid $21.3 million opener over the Friday through Monday Labor Day weekend. Last year, late summer arrivals Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Help gave an end of season push with those two films alone grossing $286.8 million to the 2011 summer box office through Labor Day. 2. Lawless Gross: $13 million (Cume: $15.14 million – Wed. opening) Screens: 2,888 (PSA: $4,501) Week: 1 The Weinstein Company opted for a wide roll out of John Hillcoat’s Cannes crime drama Lawless . Still with a bevy of stars including Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce and Gary Oldman, the box office results weren’t particularly spectacular. 3. The Expendables 2 Gross: $11.2 million (Cume: $68.559 million) Screens: 3,334 (PSA: $3,359) Week: 3 (Change: – 34% vs three day gross of $8.9 million) After two weeks at number one, Expendables 2 skidded to the number three spot in its third weekend. The Friday – Sunday gross came in at $8.9 million for a 34% overall decline for the same days the previous weekend. The pic remained in nearly the same number of theaters vs. one week prior, which stood at 3,355 though the decline in screens likely indicates the title has piqued. 4. The Bourne Legacy Gross: $9,377,345 (Cume $98,375,785) Screens: 3,131 (PSA: $2,995) Week: 4 (Change: – 22% vs three day gross of $7,326,540) The Bourne Legacy settled at number four over Labor Day weekend after placing second the previous weekend. The Universal release lost 523 theaters though its screen average actually jumped over the previous week to $2,995 from $2,540 and its overall revenue drop was only 22% (in a straight Friday – Sunday comparison) despite the fairly steep loss of venues. 5. Paranorman (3-D, Animation) Gross: $8,817,758 (Cume: $40,292,002) Screens: 3,085 (PSA: $2,858) Week: 3 (Change: – 24% vs three day gross of $6,550,735) Paranorman lost 370 screens Labor Day weekend, but also saw its screen average rise to $2,858 over the previous weekend’s $2,473. In a straight Friday – Sunday comparison, the title was only down 24% from the previous Friday – Sunday gross, not bad considering the decline in capacity. 6. The Odd Life of Timothy Green Gross: $8.502 million (Cume: $38.38 million) Screens: 2,635 (PSA: $3,227) Week: 3 (Change: – 12% vs three day gross of $6,249,000) Disney’s The Odd Life of Timothy Green held steady in the sixth position in its third weekend. The title added 37 locations and its Friday – Sunday revenue dropped only 12% from the previous Friday – Sunday period. 7. The Dark Knight Rises Gross: $7.93 million (Cume: $433,246,000) Screens: 2,187 (PSA: $3,626) Week: 7 (Change: – 16% vs three day gross of $6.1 million) 8. 2016: Obama’s America Gross: $7,086,686 (Cume: $20,253,719) Screens: 1,747 (PSA: $4,056) Week: 8 (Change: – 14% vs three day gross of $5,586,686) The anti-Obama doc took on a good amount of extra capacity over the holiday weekend, adding 656 theaters. It’s overall Friday – Sunday gross dropped 14% from the previous week. The title has now grossed more than Michael Moore’s previous effort, Capitalism: A Love Story , which totaled $14,363,397 domestically. 9. The Campaign Gross: $7.02 million (Cume: $74,597,000) Screens: 2,941 (PSA: $2,387) Week: 4 (Change: – 24% vs three day gross of $5,665,000) The comedy dropped from fourth to ninth place in its fourth weekend, also losing 361 locations over the prior week. 10. Hope Springs Gross: $6 million (Cume: $53,357,000) Screens: 2,441 (PSA: $2,458) Week: 4 (Change: – 18% vs three day gross of $4.7 million) Hope Springs landed in the top 10 over Labor Day weekend after placing ninth last week. The title added 39 screens.

Oogieloves Averages $47 Per Screen, On Track For Wrong Kind Of Box Office Record

Teletubbies marketing visionary Kenn Viselman was banking on his latest kiddie venture, the C-list cameo-packed “interactive” adventure The Oogieloves In The Big Balloon Adventure , capturing the hearts and minds of 3-5 year-olds and their parents this Labor Day weekend. But while it looks like Viselman will make a historical splash in the film game, it’s so, so, so the wrong kind: Averaging just $47 per screen after opening in 2,160 theaters on Wednesday, Oogieloves could go down with one of the worst openings of all time. Box Office Mojo reports the dismal figures from Oogieloves ‘ opening day as a $102,564 take in over 2,000 theaters, or an average of $47.48 per screen, which Christopher Rosen of Huffington Post points out could grant Oogieloves the title of worst wide-release ever if business doesn’t pick up. Like, a lot . But hey, there’s always the chance that parents were waiting for the weekend to take the kids to go dance and talk back to the three giant, terrifying noseless puppet heroes of Oogieloves . Kids love J. Edgar jokes and Christopher Lloyd with maracas! Fingers crossed you make back that $20 million budget, fellas! Meanwhile, stay tuned for further developments on the Oogieloves front. We’re keeping a close watch on this one. Previously: So WTF Is An Oogieloves , Anyway? [ Box Office Mojo , HuffPo ]

The New York Times Reviews Oogieloves In The Voice Of A 7-Year-Old

And I thought this whole Oogieloves business couldn’t get any stranger. Take it away, A.O. Scott! “Nobody is mean in this movie. They talk very loud. Theres parts where you dance or say cheers and rimes which made it noisy in the theter. Hallie’s dad said it was Rocky Horror for toddlers whatever that is. Me and Hallie are 7 and we thought it was for babies. Theo is 3 and a half. Dont you dare call him 3. He ran in circels and fell asleep. At the end the Oogieloves get all the bloons and the bloons grow faces. That was kind of a scary part evn tho the bloons were nice.” When I was seven I could spell much better than this, but whatevs. Yes, it counts toward the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes . WTF indeed.
