A-List Connections: Kathy Griffin Taught J.J. Abrams at the Groundlings

When asked by the Hollywood Reporter to reveal her pick for the Best Drama Series Emmy, Kathy Griffin responded with her most fascinating Hollywood connection yet: She once taught improv to J.J. Abrams. “So I’m going to go with Lost and here’s why: J.J. Abrams was my student when I was teaching at the Groundlings as one of my day jobs,” she said. “And l feel like Lost took a lot of crap because they had good episodes and episodes that maybe weren’t as good, but ultimately I thought it was a very compelling show.” It’s that support that made Abrams’s fine acting work in Six Degrees of Separation possible. REVIEW: Risky Spring Fever Wins Some, Loses Some

Spring Fever is a work of defiance, for better and worse. Director Lou Ye’s sixth film is also his first filmed in violation of a five-year ban on production imposed by the Chinese Film Bureau after the 2006 release of Summer Palace, which dealt directly with the Tiananmen Square rebellion. Shot on the sly in Nanjing, Spring Fever maps two extra angles onto an already unconventional love triangle, frankly inverting the dominant sexual dynamic of the melodrama: Three of the five participants are men, and none of them are that interested in the women.

Meanwhile, Sofia Vergara addressed that rumor that she would run down Sunset Blvd. naked, Julia Roberts took offense to claims that her legs are less than perfect and Stephen Colbert planned to appeal to more “black folk.”

Yesterday, MTV tried to wake us up early with its 2010 Video Music Awards nominations . Didn’t happen. But with 13 nominations, Lady Gaga just broke the record for “most nominated female solo artist in a single year.” Way fancy. Since “Bad Romance” is this year’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” — garnering 257 million YouTube views — we can assume it’ll win Video of the Year.
