Can True Beauty’s DJ David Provide a Fix for Jersey Shore Withdrawal?

Since Jersey Shore ‘s first season ended, we’ve been given plenty of episode marathons to quench our thirst for hair gel and horrifying tans. ABC must have sensed our anxiety, because one contestant on the new season of True Beauty serves as a well-lacquered proxy for our wayward friends The Situation and DJ Pauly D. Might this gelled newbie match ranks with the Seaside Heights greats?

Ratings: Old CBS Beats New ABC

ABC trotted out two new episodes last night ( The Bachelorette and the new reality series True Beauty ) and still lost to CBS’ s platter of reruns and NBC’ s Stanley Cup finals game in the demos race. CBS garnered top honors with 7.7 million total viewers (beating ABC’ s 6.9), while NBC won the coveted 18-49 demo with a 2.4 rating over ABC’ s 2.3. Look at the bright side, ABC : The people of Chicago haven’t been this excited about professional sports since 2005. They’ve earned this tiny ratings victory. And if the Blackhawks win it all, the entire Midwest may be transformed into romantics who want nothing more than a rose ceremony to end their Sunday nights. [ Zap2It ]

The Weekly Andy Cohen WTF Moment: Jerry Seinfeld Calls Out Cohen’s Show as a ‘Jewish Curse’

Why does Bravo’s Senior VP of Production and Programming host a weekly late night talk show where he interviews various reality stars while sipping on a Maker’s Mark? Who knows! Are VH1 and A&E Switching Personalities?

VH1 debuted a docuseries last night called The OCD Project , a mysteriously stone-faced exploration of people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It has some of the trappings of familiar VH1 fare — the sufferers move into a house to seek treatment, a psychiatrist consults and sets up phobia-breaking stunts, and confessionals punctuate the hour — but the low-key storytelling and lack of a celebrity draw mark a weird new vista for VH1. The once-proud network of Rock of Love Bus shows signs of evolving into A&E, whose arguably exploitative, but revered docuseries Obsessed , Intervention and Hoarders have set a standard for reality series about psychiatric disorders. At the same time, as VH1 escalates in quality, A&E continues to pad its lineup with programming about Kirstie Alley, Gene Simmons, and many other celebrities . Is a bizarre switcheroo occurring?

REVIEW: Agora Strains to Keep Up With Its Own Staggering Vision

Handsome to look at and driven by a passionate — if not exactly precise — political sensibility, Agora is this spring’s highest-brow sandal epic, by an Egyptian cubit. Considering its competition is the lumpy Clash of the Titans and this week’s video game-inspired Prince of Persia , it’s an endorsement earned by a pretty wide margin of default. Director Alejandro Amenábar has chosen the story of Hypatia, a fourth century Greek mathematician, as the subject of his seventh film, and sets it in a marvelous recreation of ancient Alexandria. A dust-and-geometry biopic with blaring modern resonances is a risky move even for Amenábar, who has been drawn to challenges of genre (as with the understated horror picture The Others ) and topical material (his lyrical meditation on the right to die, The Sea Inside, ) over the course of his still-young career. Unfortunately the one expectation that can be attached to the director — a gift for elegant, involving stories and consistent, inventive filmmaking — is obscured by Agora ‘s tendency toward the blandly overwrought.

Chloë Sevigny Disses Big Love Writers Again, For Old Time’s Sake
