Cory Booker, the charismatic mayor of Newark, is now a member of the U.S. Senate from New Jersey after winning a special election on Wednesday. The Democrat, heavily favored in polls, defeated conservative Republican Steve Lonegan. Booker had an 11-point lead with the vote 90 percent counted. Booker, 44, spoke to supporters in Newark and thanked them for turning out to vote against the backdrop of the 16-day government shutdown . “You didn’t just vote, you believed that your vote and choice mattered,” he said. “It would have been easy to listen to this frustrating negativity and stay home.” “But here in New Jersey, more than a million people rejected cynicism and came out on a Wednesday, in the middle of October, to fight the cynicism.” Booker is the first black U.S. Senator from New Jersey and joins Republican Tim Scott of South Carolina as the nation’s only two black U.S. senators. He will fill the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Frank Lautenberg, who died in June at age 89. Booker had planned to run for this seat in 2014. Lautenberg’s passing prompted a special election, however, and Gov. Chris Christie, who is running for re-election now, set the October 16 date. Christie, like Booker a possible White House contender in 2016 or down the road, could have scheduled the Senate race for Election Day, November 5. Democrats said was avoiding being on the ballot with Booker, who could attract Democratic turnout. He said he wanted to fill the Senate vacancy ASAP. Booker, a Rhodes scholar and Yale Law School graduate, rocketed to fame in the state’s largest city, which has long struggled with poverty and crime. Booker is known to rub shoulders with celebrities and is a near-constant presence on Twitter, where he recently befriended stripper Lynsie Lee . Newark received a $100 million gift to its schools from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who said he had met Booker and was impressed by his plans. A bachelor, Booker has long been rumored as a future presidential candidate. Whether that happens or not, he’s one step closer to it being possible now.

Adrian Peterson’s son has died following an assault, according to reports. Sioux Falls, S.D., police have confirmed that the 2-year-old child of the NFL star. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that the young boy was beaten by the boyfriend of his mother in South Dakota, suffering severe head injuries. Earlier Friday, he was listed in critical condition. Adrian Peterson’s Son Dies Per the family’s request, the state is holding the child’s name, but the athlete’s father, Nelson Peterson, confirmed he was Adrian Peterson’s son . “All I can say is, we are asking for prayers and respect for our family as we deal with this tragic situation,” Nelson Peterson told a local newspaper. How and why did this tragedy occur? That is very much unclear at this time, but authorities believe strongly that the attack on the boy was deliberate. Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, has been charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery on an infant. According to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader: “Patterson was dating the child’s mother and was the only one home with the boy Wednesday when the abuse allegedly took place. “Patterson called 911 around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday to report the boy was choking at their Platinum Valley apartment.” “But Lt. Blaine Larsen of the Sioux Falls Police Department said it became clear at the hospital that the boy’s injuries were not accidental.” “An examination led doctors to suspect that the boy’s injuries were ‘consistent with abuse and not accidental.'” “The assault on an infant charge involves blows, shaking or causing a child’s head to sustain impact with an object in a manner that causes bleeding or swelling on the brain.” The boy was confirmed dead Friday afternoon. Adrian Peterson, the 2012 NFL MVP, returned to Vikings headquarters Friday. The all-world running back said he would be on the field Sunday. “I will be playing Sunday, without a doubt,” Peterson told the media today. “I really appreciate all the support that I’ve been receiving from fans and the Vikings. He added that “this is a private matter and I would ask you all to please just respect my privacy and not ask at all about the situation at hand.” Peterson also tweeted two hours ago: “The NFL is a fraternity of brothers and I am thankful for the tweets, phone calls and text messages from my fellow players.”
Very scary news this week for one of the NFL’s best players: The two-year old son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was brutally attacked by the man dating the child’s mother and rushed to a hospital in South Dakota. Sources tell TMZ that the toddler is in critical condition and his head injuries are consistent with abuse. Joseph Patterson, 27, has been arrested for the heinous act and charged with aggravated felony assault and battery of an infant. Peterson nearly broke the single-season league rushing record last season and was the NFL MVP. We send him and his family our best wishes during this difficult time.
Dean Sheremet gave an interview last night in which he sort of dissed his ex-wife LeAnn Rimes. Naturally, she took this and ran with it for attention. Sheremet, of course, is the mwan she was married to when she started hooking up with Eddie Cibrian, who was also married to Brandi Glanville . As you can imagine, he’s got a lot of feelings about LeAnn , even if he airs them in public less frequently than Brandi does about Rimes and Cibrian. On Access Hollywood, he said he was “blindsided” by her infidelity. Moreover, the way that he learned about the affair was that LeAnn called him to let him know that some magazine “may or may not have a picture of me and Eddie kissing.” Saying he “never saw it coming” because “you have that assumption that the person that you’re with would never do something like that” isn’t really dissing her, it’s just true. As is the fact that the two “don’t really talk that much,” he says, because “there’s not really a need to. I don’t really know what we would talk about.” Dean Sheremet , who is also remarried, is a chef these days, which is ostensibly why he was on TV, though he admits that the notoriety has an upside: “it’s part of my story and it’s the reason that I get to do awesome cooking segments. Whatever it is that gets me in the door is fine. I’m really a chef!” LeAnn, obviously, couldn’t let this go without a series of tweets, beginning with “I’ve got nothing! Over it, long gone, next… I mean really!? TGIF.” And it continued, for kind of no reason.
