Has The Host already entered its twilight as a potential film franchise? Stephenie Meyer has said she envisions her sci-fi follow-up to the blockbuster Twilight novel franchise, as a three-novel story arc , but the probability of those future books translating into a movie trilogy is looking iffy at best. A spokeswoman for The Host says information regarding the probability of a sequel “is not available at this time,” but the film’s dismal opening weekend does not bode well for a follow-up. The hordes who swarmed the film adaptations of Meyer’s Twilight saga apparently did not find a romance about a parasitic alien nearly as compelling because they did not show up at the cineplex last weekend. The Host ‘s Box Office Sales Were Dismal According to Box Office Mojo , The Host did $10.6 million its opening weekend, and as of April 2, it has made only $23.5 million worldwide — little more than half of its $40-million production budget. International box office results, which have become increasingly important, also lagged behind domestic. (In comparison, G.I. Joe: Retaliation , which is getting a sequel, has grossed almost $140 million worldwide at the box office as of April 2.) But that’s not the only factor that makes a sequel unlikely. At the Los Angeles premiere of The Host on March 19, Meyer told EW.com that she was still working on the second novel. (The movie’s director Andrew Niccol, who expressed interested in helming a sequel even cracked, “Show me the book, Stephenie….You shouldn’t be here. You should be home writing.” The Follow-Up Novel Isn’t Finished The longer Meyer takes to finish the book, the greater the likelihood that the already meager interest in the movie version of The Host — and any sequel it might spawn — will dissipate further, while the first film’s cast members, who’ve expressed an interest in doing a sequel, grow older and commit to other films. In other words, you have a better chance of contracting a tapeworm than seeing a sequel to The Host . [ Box Office Mojo , EW.com ] Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are back together. Physically. After the Twilight lovebirds spent more than two months apart while Rob filmed The Rover in Australia, the 26-year-old actor is now back in the U.S. of A. Not a moment too soon. Contrary to rumors that he was ignoring Kristen and dreading his return , “Rob is so excited to be back in LA,” a source tells E! News. “He really missed Kristen.” Their first order of business? A night out at their favorite bar! A fan snapped a picture with the down-to-earth duo at the Ye Rustic Inn in L.A. (a regular Robsten spot) where they enjoyed each other’s company last night. Despite rampant breakup reports while Rob was half the world away, it appears the duo is going strong, despite the distance and the tumultuous recent past. Rock on, Robsten. Rock. On.
The not-so-critically-below Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 was the big “winner” at the 33rd annual Golden Raspberry Awards, a.k.a. the Razzies. The awards, given out the night before the 2013 Academy Awards , celebrate (or call out) Hollywood’s worst achievements of the cinematic year. Breaking Dawn Part 2 was recognized in seven categories, including worst picture. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew on that dubious honor!! Other Razzies racked up by the final Twilight Saga film: Worst sequel Bill Condon, worst director Kristen Stewart , worst actress Taylor Lautner , worst supporting actor Lautner and Mackenzie Foy, worst couple The entire cast, worst screen ensemble The film, of course, made $828 million at the box office and its big three stars are now world famous, so the Razzies can sort of suck it in that sense. Adam Sandler, who last year monopolized the Razzies with his “comedy” Jack & Jill , this year got only two awards for That’s My Boy . Progress, man! Rihanna, as worst supporting actress in Battleship , won by a landslide, while worst screenwriter Sandler beat the authors of Breaking Dawn by a single vote . Nothing like a true awards season nail-biter.
Polyglot actor-cum-performance artist James Franco has struck again, releasing yet another of his multitudinous side art projects unto the world for dissection and intense theoretical analysis, and — nah, just kidding! Here’s a video of Franco lip-synching to Justin Bieber ‘s “Boyfriend” in full Biebs gear, mop top and pubescent cherub-grin and all, as he and Spring Breakers co-star Ashley Benson writhe around in a brunette wig like they’re in the world’s worst American Apparel ad. Is Franco just a huge Belieber? Is he confronting mass media’s sexualization of youth by turning JB’s pick-up jam into a seedy softcore home video? What does fellow Spring Breaker Selena Gomez think?! Franco nails the whisper-rap and all, but personally I like his Riff Raff impersonation better. Fingers crossed that for every weirdo soap opera appearance and Three’s Company installation piece and college professorship and Oscar hosting fiasco and meta mixed media performance art project he unleashes into the ether he does another one of these pop impersonations because it proves that stars really are like us: Secretly obsessed with Justin Bieber. As terribly easy as it is to hate on the Twilight films, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II was the best of the series. (Not that it was without its share of WTFery — imprinting and vampire fistfights and every second of Michael Sheen onscreen, anyone?) But with Breaking Dawn – Part II nominated for 11 Razzie Awards in just ten categories, up against the likes of Adam Sandler ‘s That’s My Boy , Eddie Murphy ‘s A Thousand Words , and the bizarro pop culture sensation / box office bomb The Oogieloves In Big Balloon Adventure , let’s be real: Does Twilight truly deserve to win all the Razzies? 2012 was rife with bigger targets for stinkbomb honors. Take the Worst Actor category, for example: Murphy’s turn in A Thousand Words as a man with a finite number of words to utter before death should give four-time nominee Robert Pattinson a run for his money, but Tyler Perry just might take it — and the Worst Actress prize, for which he’s also nominated for Madea’s Witness Protection . The pictures earning repeat scorn at the Razzies this year include blockbuster Battleship , which sucked Liam Neeson into the race to the bottom for his turn as a stern Navy officer and also earned Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker nods for their supporting work in the film. (If Decker doesn’t win, somebody get her a chicken burrito! Within five minutes!) It seems unfair to nominate performers who are playing themselves in obviously cheesy comedies, which is why David Hasselhoff in Piranha 3DD and Vanilla Ice in That’s My Boy cancel out of the Supporting Actor contest in my book. Meanwhile, the only nominee in this year’s crop who might actually take the Razzie honor as a warning sign to get a new agent is The Guilt Trip ‘s Barbra Streisand, who has been nominated thrice before — last year for Little Fockers , and three decades ago for 1981’s All Night Long and 1984’s Yentl . But let’s bring it back to the Worst Picture race. Battleship had its defenders, and Breaking Dawn – Part II was the best of the series. That’s My Boy scored worse the G-rated gyrations of Oogieloves on Rotten Tomatoes, but even Sandler shenanigans and dancing in the aisles to the sad sight and sound of C-list celebrities cashing paychecks didn’t hold a candle to the universally loathed A Thousand Words , which still stands at the elusive, ever-impressive 00 percent snake eyes on the Tomatometer. So which films and performances of 2012 really deserve that golden statuette? (Allow me to remind you what 00% on the Tomatometer looks like…) Full list of nominees: Worst Picture Battleship The Oogieloves in Big Balloon Adventure That’s My Boy A Thousand Words The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Worst Director Sean Anders – That’s My Boy Peter Berg – Battleship Bill Condon – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Tyler Perry – Good Deeds / Madea’s Witness Protection John Putch – Atlas Shrugged: Part II Worst Actress Katherine Heigl – One for the Money Milla Jovovich – Resident Evil: Retribution Tyler Perry – Madea’s Witness Protection Kristen Stewart – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II / Snow White and the Huntsman Barbra Streisand – The Guilt Trip Worst Actor Nicolas Cage – Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance / Seeking Justice Eddie Murphy – A Thousand Words Robert Pattinson – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Tyler Perry – Alex Cross / Good Deeds Adam Sandler – That’s My Boy Worst Supporting Actress Jessica Biel – Playing For Keeps / Total Recall Brooklyn Decker – Battleship / What to Expect When You’re Expecting Ashley Greene – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Jennifer Lopez – What to Expect When You’re Expecting Rihanna – Battleship Worst Supporting Actor David Hasselhoff – Pirannha 3-DD Taylor Lautner – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Liam Neeson – Battleship / Wrath of the Titans Nick Swardson – That’s My Boy Vanilla Ice – That’s My Boy Worst Screen Ensemble Battleship The Oogieloves in Big Balloon Adventure That’s My Boy The Twilight Saga: Eclipsed Part II Madea’s Witness Protection Worst Screenplay Atlas Shrugged Part II Battleship That’s My Boy A Thousand Words The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Worst Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance Pirannha 3-DD Red Dawn Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Madea’s Witness Protection Worst Screen Couple Any two cast members from Jersy Shore in The Three Stooges Mackenzie Foy and Taylor Lautner in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Tyler Perry and his drag in Madea’s Witness Protection Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg, Leighton Meester, or Susan Sarandon in That’s My Boy [via Indiewire ] Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter .
