‘It’s a Miami record,’ Young Money rapper tells MTV News at VMAs. By Rob Markman Lil Twist Photo: Michael Bezjian/ WireImage LOS ANGELES — Lil Wayne may have just dropped Tha Carter IV, but don’t expect his Young Money artists to just stand around and bask in Weezy’s multiplatinum glow. Drake’s Take Care will be the next album to drop on the label, and Tyga’s Careless World is coming soon, as well as Birdman’s Cash Money release Bigga Than Life. Dallas rapper Lil Twist is cooking up his debut too, and fans can expect a big-time collaboration. ” Don’t Get It Twisted is definitely coming before the year is over,” the 18-year-old rapper said on the 2011 VMA black carpet. “I’m getting ready to put out my next record, which features Justin [Bieber], the one that everybody’s been waitin’ on. ‘Wherever You Are’ featuring Justin Bieber coming soon.” Twist and Bieb’s friendship is no secret. Twizzy has been teasing a full collaborative mixtape between the two, but as of now, nothing has materialized. “Me and Justin, we actually met through a mutual friend, and after that, we got real cool, actually,” he told MTV News last November. “[We] started working in the studio, sending stuff through the MacBook and everything. And then he was like, ‘Yo, bro, we should do a mixtape. Let’s go.’ We just started then.” While there is no telling when the mixtape will come, Twist is confident that their single will surface shortly. “It’s gonna be great. It’s a cool summer record,” Twist told MTV News of his and Justin’s upcoming collaboration. “It’s a party song. Straight for the sun. It’s a Miami record.” In 2010, Twist dropped the album’s first single, “Little Secret,” featuring Bow Wow and came back this year with the Lil Wayne-assisted “Love Affair.” The R&B-laced song found Twist singing about being caught in the middle of a love triangle, while Wayne crudely rapped around the same subject. For his current single, “New Money,” the YMCMB young’un hooked up with R&B singer Mishon. A promotional insert included with Tha Carter IV CD has Don’t Get It Twisted slated for a November 8 release; whether that date sticks remains to be seen. Young Money teen’s ‘Flowers’ also might land on Tha Carter IV. By Alvin Blanco Lil Twist Photo: MTV News Lil Twist , currently on the “106 & Park” Closer to My Dreams Tour, discussed working with and being influenced by Lil Wayne during a stop in Los Angeles. The teenaged YMCMB rapper has been taking cues from Weezy when it comes to his own performances, while his rhymes might land on Tha Carter IV. “I’ve learned a lot over the past five years from my brother Lil Wayne, seeing him on tour since I was very young,” Lil Twist told MTV News. “So you’re going to see a lot of energy like he gives at his shows. Not the same, but a lot of swag.” Being a member of Young Money has made Twist privy to an early listen of Weezy’s upcoming mixtape, Sorry For the Wait. “It’s amazing, it’s great, it’s outstanding,” Twist said of the project, which Wayne is releasing to appease fans since his proper album, Tha Carter IV, has been delayed numerous times. “And, he’s rapping. He’s going in and y’all are gonna love it.” Twist revealed he’s also heard all of Weezy’s album, now scheduled to drop August 29. “I’ve heard it all,” Twist said. “Yes, we’re in the studio every day, every night, till the morning, till sun up in Miami, so I’ve heard it all.” Lil Twist himself will be rapping on one or both of Weezy’s forthcoming projects. He revealed the name the song he appears on: “It’s called ‘Flowers.’ I can say it may make the mixtape, it may not. Because it’s for C4, and it’s also for Sorry For the Wait. It’ll make either one, maybe both.” Lil Twist is releasing a collaborative mixtape with Justin Bieber , who’s rap persona is “Shawty Mane.” The two buddies are working on a video for a song called “Wherever You Are” that appears on the long-in-the-works project. At the taping of his ‘Unplugged,’ the YM boss explains his strategies for Lil Twist, Cory Gunz and Shanell. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wanyne Photo: MTV News Through the years, Lil Wayne developed as an artist. The one-time neophyte of Cash Money records has grown from a slick-talking corn-rolled kid to the multi-platinum face of the label. Now, 12 years after releasing his 1999 solo debut, Wayne heads his own Young Money label, and as he explained to Sway after taping his “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged,” he’s serious about the careful artistic development of all of his signees. “I’m not gonna shove him in your face right now and make him a one-hit wonder,” Wayne said of his “6 Foot, 7 Foot” collaborator Cory Gunz . “He’s nowhere near ready. He’s gonna do this the way artists should do it, the way Drake did it. “I’m not gonna make a one-hit wonder,” Wayne repeated emphatically. “That’s not what I do.” Lil Twist, who is currently finding increasing success with his latest single, “Love Affair,” will not be a flash in the pan either, according to Weezy. “Twist is ready. Twist is a well-developed artist, and it’s about to be Twist’s turn.” The 18-year-old Dallas rapper joined the Young Money fold as a minor, but rather than have him go for the usually successful, cutesy route, Wayne chose to wait. “That’s why I didn’t shove Twist in nobody’s face. I could’ve been like, ‘This is our young artist’; the young, cute little artist of the label with all the adults,” he said. “I could’ve did that, but no, we’re gonna do this right. I didn’t want to put him out and have him as a kid star, and sometimes you don’t know what to do after that. So now he’s 18, he’s a teenager, and I don’t even have to look at the kid-star thing.” Young Money plans to release Twist’s debut album Don’t Get It Twisted later this year. Wayne expresses a similar amount of confidence in his alternative R&B female artist Shanell. “Shannell is past ready. Actually she came into the game ready,” Wayne said beaming with pride. “That was no developing; that’s a superstar, that’s a very talented woman. It’s just that you have to properly handle her situation the right way, ’cause you don’t want nobody to miss the point, and the point is, that is a very talented woman, and that’s what I want everybody to see.” Don’t miss “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged,” premiering Sunday, June 12, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV2, MTV and MTV.com. Young Money MC says his project with Bieber may even become an EP. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James “FLX” Smith Lil Twist Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber has already received the seal of approval of Kanye West , Ludacris and Drake . And he impressed many with a video in which he raps over Vado and Cam’ron’s “Speaking in Tungs” last month. Now Bieber is taking the next step to proving his crossover potential: working on a mixtape with of Young Money rapper and fellow teen Lil Twist . “Me and Justin are working on this mixtape,” Twist confirmed to MTV News. “We probably gonna title it Best of Both Worlds, [or] Best of Young Rap, Best of Young Pop. We got a few records done. The recent record that was talked about was ‘Billionaire.’ We did ‘Billionaire’ by Travie McCoy and Bruno Mars. We gonna get ready to leak that out. We’re gonna leak something real soon.” Any further details about when more music from the twosome might drop is still very TBD. “I don’t have the date on the mixtape yet, because we’re still working hard on it,” the MC explained. “We’re trying to get new beats, because now, like, some of the beats [that we’ve used] are old. … So we’re gonna get new beats and go back in and try and make an EP.” The idea of the two working on some music together was really an idea Bieber came up with, Twist explained. “Me and Justin, we actually met through a mutual friend and after that we got real cool actually,” he recalled. “[We] started working in the studio, sending stuff through the Mac book and everything. And then he was like, ‘Yo, bro, we should do a mixtape. Let’s go.’ We just started then.” Related Artists Lil Twist Justin Bieber
