Snooki Sneaks Into Our Top 10 TV Characters Of 2011

‘Parks and Recreation’ antihero Ron Swanson lands at #1, with ‘Breaking Bad’ meth cook Walter and the ‘Jersey Shore’ guidette behind him. By MTV News staff Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi in “Jersey Shore” Photo: MTV It’s all come down to this: Only 10 remain in our countdown of the Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, and the results might surprise you. It goes without saying that one of our favorite “Jersey Shore” stars found her way toward the top of our list, but it’s a certain “Parks and Rec” administrator who took home all the bacon (and all the eggs while he was at it). Combine those characters with two nods for “Breaking Bad,” an Emmy-winning “Game of Thrones” actor and one comedian who risked his very life to bring some of the biggest laughs the small screen has ever enjoyed, and you’ll find yourself looking at our Top 10 TV Characters of 2011. Stay tuned to MTV News for interviews with several of our top honorees. See our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 50 to 41, including a masked bachelor and dashing novelist/crime-fighter. 10. Gus Fring, “Breaking Bad” I’ve never smoked meth, but my guess is the effects are similar to the feeling shooting through my body when the crank kingpin — SPOILER ALERT! — exited the smoky scene of a suicide bombing, straightened his tie and revealed that in place of his face was a steaming mass of Fring-like goo. He was in death as he was in life: debonair, a spiller of blood and totally goddamn frightening. Contemplating a “Breaking Bad” without Gus makes us want to reach for the pipe. -Eric Ditzian 9. Constance Langdon, “American Horror Story” Both television and the horror genre are no strangers to terrible mothers, but Jessica Lange’s deliciously dark Constance on “American Horror Story” truly takes the cake. How many moms have you known to allow their children to die in a house that keeps the dead’s spirits locked in our mortal realm for all eternity? The two-time Oscar winner marks her first regular television gig with “AHS,” and it’s a phenomenal debut. As awful as Constance can be, as mean and nasty as she gets, she’s impossible to look away from. And, so help us, you actually feel bad for this woman and her cursed womb. Only an actress of Lange’s caliber could make the ruthless Constance into someone you can root for despite yourself — and with only one season under her belt, we can only imagine the “Horror” Lange will bring in the future. -Josh Wigler 8. Fat Mac, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Remember Robert De Niro’s turn in “Raging Bull,” when he gained 60 pounds to play Jake La Motta? Of course you don’t; there weren’t any sparkling vampires in “Raging Bull.” Long story short, De Niro packed on the lb’s and subsequently won every award on the planet. Rob McElhenney, on the other hand, added a solid 50 pounds of fat to play Mac on the current season of “Sunny,” and he’ll be lucky to be nominated for a Blockbuster Entertainment Award. So let’s honor him here — not only for ruining his body for the sake of comedy, but for spoiling one of TV’s oldest tropes: As shows go on, characters don’t age, they get better looking. On the seventh season of “Sunny,” Mac looks worse than ever, yet his best moments — carrying around a trash bag filled with chimichangas, insisting he’s just “cultivating mass” — steal the show. Whether it’s method acting or some sociological experiment, you’ve got to appreciate McElhenney’s willingness to bust boundaries — and waistbands. -James Montgomery See our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 40 to 31, including a “hootie hoo!”-hollering chef and funnyman talk-show host. 7. Milania Giudice, “Real Housewives of New Jersey “You have such muscular legs when you do gymnastics, sometimes you gotta rest your toes,” Gia sang to little sister Milania — both daughters of “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star Teresa Giudice — on her fifth birthday. The song is irrelevant to all the adorable little Milania represents, but I just love that line. Milania remained blissfully unaware of the drama her mother and castmates stirred up on “RHONJ” and instead delivered such irreverent pearls as “give me pizza, you old troll” to her father and climbed onto couches, into supermarket freezer displays and, most importantly, into our hearts. -Rya Backer 6. Phil Dunphy, “Modern Family” In the sea of characters on “Modern Family,” the biggest one of all just might be Phil Dunphy, played by Emmy winner Ty Burrell . Prime time’s most well-meaning husband, dad and son-in-law, Phil lives his life with his own joie de vivre, blind to the fact that sometimes (when he lets his feet get off the ground) he borders on the ridiculous. He’s over-the-top and underappreciated, but at the end of the day, it’s his love for life, shenanigans and family that keeps audiences, and the Dunphy clan, coming back for more. -Jocelyn Vena 5. Eric Northman, “True Blood” There are plenty of badass bloodsuckers littering vampire canon, so what makes Eric Northman (played by Alexander Skarsg

Jay-Z Hints At Solo, Kanye And Throne Albums In 2012

‘We’re really in a great place creatively,’ he tells MTV News of three possible projects. By Rob Markman Jay-Z Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Are you ready to Watch the Throne again? With Jay-Z and Kanye West still riding high off the success of their summer masterpiece, the duo just may get back in the studio and give fans another dose, Hov revealed to MTV News. “It depends on how this thing finishes up,” Jay said in reference to his and Kanye’s current Watch the Throne Tour. “We — I say ‘we’ because I’m in Throne mode — we’re in a great place creatively. You might see a Jay, then Kanye and a Throne album next year. You know, we’re really in a great place creatively. We really found our zone.” Back in July, during an intimate listening session for the then-unreleased WTT, Jay revealed to a room of reporters that he had two songs already recorded for his yet-untitled 11th solo album but hasn’t talked about it very much since. It’s been two years since Jigga dropped his last LP, The Blueprint 3. Kanye, on the other hand, released his last solo album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, in 2010. It was both a commercial and critical success, but was noticeably absent from the Album of the Year category when Grammy nominations were announced last month. During a December 1 Throne concert in his hometown of Chicago, Yeezy addressed the snub , surprisingly blaming himself for releasing Fantasy and Watch the Throne in the same year. “Don’t worry, because me and Hov are gonna keep on making sh–,” he told the crowd. Jay, who on Thursday announced a pair of charity concerts at New York’s Carnegie Hall , didn’t give official word about when fans can expect any of the three projects, but he is definitely in his zone! Kanye West Blames Himself For Album Of The Year Snub

‘That’s my fault for dropping Watch the Throne and Dark Fantasy the same year,’ Yeezy tells fans about coveted Grammy nom. By Rob Markman Kanye West Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images Everyone knows that Kanye West takes his awards very seriously, but those who were excepting a Yeezy meltdown for his Grammy Album of the Year snub will be disappointed. On Thursday during the Chicago stop of ‘Ye and Hov’s Watch the Throne Tour , the hometown MC, who is leading the 2012 nominees with seven Grammy nods , addressed the crowd. ‘Something I figured out earlier today, because you know everybody came to me last night like, ‘Congratulations,’ because you know I’m leading — I have the most Grammy nominations once again, like we always do at this time,” Kanye said, drawing thunderous applause from the United Center crowd. “But, you know, people focus, they say, ‘You ain’t have Album of the Year or Record of the Year,’ ” he continued as the fan cheers quickly turned to disapproving boos. Then the outspoken rap star did the unexpected. Instead of sending shots toward the Grammy committee, Kanye blamed himself: “I figured it out though. That’s my fault for dropping Watch the Throne and Dark Fantasy the same year. I should’ve just spaced it out, just a little bit more.” In November 2010, ‘Ye released his fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, . The platinum LP was both critically acclaimed and a commercial success thanks to surefire singles like the rambunctious “Power,” the reflective sing-along “Runaway” and “All of the Lights,” which is nominated for Song of the Year and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Nine months after MBDTF, in August 2011, the Louis Vuitton Don hooked up with Jay-Z to release their tag-team album Watch the Throne . Both Yeezy LPs are nominated in the Best Rap Album category, but neither is in contention for the coveted Album of the Year Award. Instead Adele, the Foo Fighters, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and Rihanna will duke it out for the golden gramophone. Surprisingly Kanye West isn’t sweating it, though. “Don’t worry because me and Hov are gonna keep on making sh–,” he said to the crowd. Does this mean we can expect a Watch the Throne sequel? Guess we’ll have to wait till next year to see. What do you think of Kanye’s reaction? Should he have spazzed? Tell us in the comments! Kanye West Preps G.O.O.D. Music Album

Compilation album due in the spring may include such G.O.O.D. artists as Big Sean, Pusha T. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Flanigan/ Getty Images Kanye West spent much of summer 2010 seeding the Internet with new music via his “G.O.O.D. Friday” track releases, previewing a number of the songs from his own My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album. And on Wednesday, West announced that he’s packaging up some of those goods for a proper release. “Goodmusic. The album. Spring 2012,” he tweeted , providing just a tease of what’s to come. ‘Ye’s label, Def Jam, confirmed the release as well in a tweet , hyping upcoming albums from Rick Ross, the Roots, Young Jeezy and Rihanna, though a spokesperson could not be reached at press time for further details on the disc. The G.O.O.D. Music bench is deep, so it’s possible the disc could contain tracks from Big Sean, Kid Kudi, CyHi Da Prynce, Mos Def, Common, Mr. Hudson, Pusha T and John Legend. It could also contain a few of the “Friday” tracks that did not make the cut on Fantasy, including “Chain Heavy” with Talib Kweli and Consequence; “Looking for Trouble” with Pusha, CyHi, Big Sean and J. Cole; “Christian Dior Denim Flow” with Kid Cudi, Pusha, John Legend, Lloyd Banks and Ryan Leslie; and “Take One for the Team” with Keri Hilson, Pusha and CyHi. West recently took a stroll down to New York’s Zuccotti Park to check out the action at the Occupy Wall Street demonstration, not long after wrapping up his Twisted world tour in September at Austin City Limits. But he won’t be chilling for long, as he’s slated to kick off the Throne Tour with Jay-Z on October 28 at Atlanta’s Philips Arena. The tour is currently slated to run through a December 18 date at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. Related Videos Welcome To Jay-Z And Kanye West’s ‘Watch The Throne’ Week Related Artists Kanye West

LL Cool J Salutes Hip-Hop’s Growth At BET Awards

‘To go from an hour or two hours at night to entire award shows … that’s a big thing,’ LL tells MTV News on black carpet. By Rob Markman LL Cool J Photo: MTV News Who would’ve thought that hip-hop would take it this far? When he got his start in 1984, LL Cool J remembers how the genre was marginalized in the media, but Tuesday night’s 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards are a definite sign of the times. “When we first started the music, they didn’t even play it on the radio in the daytime,” BET’s I Am Hip Hop Icon Award winner told MTV News on the show’s black carpet. “Hip-hop was two hours at night or an hour at night on the weekends, and that was it. So to go from an hour or two hours at night to entire award shows and whole generations of people whose lives have been changed just because they’re involved with the music, that’s a big thing.” The awards shows started off with a bang. Young Jeezy opened with his new single “F.A.M.E.” and gave way to T.I. on the song’s final verse, marking the first television appearance for the King of the South since his prison release in September. Lil Wayne — who was nominated for an astounding 18 awards — took home five, while Busta Rhymes accepted four on behalf of his absent “Look at Me Now” collaborator Chris Brown. Nicki Minaj was named MVP of the Year, while Wiz Khalifa took home the Rookie of the Year award. Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy won CD of the Year, and Jay-Z was crowned Hustler of the Year. The show’s live performances were something to marvel at, as DMX and Swizz Beatz surprised viewers with a medley of classics. Big Sean and Wiz Khalifa rocked spirited sets, while Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group performed their singles “That Way” and “Ima Boss.” Rap icon Heavy D closed out the show, but the real highlights were the rap ciphers . B.o.B, Busta Rhymes, Ludacris, Tech N9ne, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and Rick Ross all participated in the rap segments, while DJ Premier curated the rhyme showcase. “It makes me feel good to be a person that contributed, that helped make this happen,” LL said. How’s that for cultural growth? What did you think of the BET Hip Hop Awards? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists LL Cool J

Chris Brown Leads List of BET Hip Hop Award Winners

It’s good to be Chris Brown right now. Team Breezy has his back. Karrueche Tran is not pregnant. Even Rihanna says she’s a fan. And the BET Hip Hop Awards just bestowed three honors upon him. Most notably, Chris won Best Hip-Hop Video for “Look at Me Now.” Brown was on tour and not present, but Tweeted: “Thank you BET but most of all TeamBreezy!” The show, hosted by Mike Epps and MC’d by Da Brat (yep, she’s still around) opened up with a performance by T.I. (no word if the party bus took him there). Wiz Khalifa, Heavy D and Tyrese, Rick Ross and the Maybach Music Group, Big Sean and even DMX alongside Swizz Beatz hit the stage and rocked the crowd. Lupe Fiasco also took the mic and gave a political performance (big surprise) with a mysteriously masked female vocalist who turned out to be … Erykah Badu. Lil Wayne’s ‘Mirror’ Had A Long Road To Carter IV

REO beat was passed up by Kanye West, Nas and Drake before ending up on VMA performer’s album, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne Photo: MTV Behind the Beats: Ramon “REO” Owens As an up-and-coming producer, having Kanye West, Nas and Drake pass up on your beats can be dejecting, but Ramon “REO” Owens proves that persistence pays. After crafting a beat nearly three years ago, the 30-year-old finally got his instrumental placed on Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV as the deluxe bonus track “Mirror,” featuring Bruno Mars. “Kanye heard it, Drake heard it, and it already had the Bruno [hook],” he said. “Basically, Nas had it for a while, and it just ended up in the hands of Wayne and he loved it.” With the help of Atlantic Records A&R Mike Caren, REO, who producers in tandem with his group the Soundkillers, was able to get his beat in the hands of some heavy-hitters. Originally, his goal was to land placement on ‘Ye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy but had to settle for Tha Carter IV instead. REO said his placement boiled down to one thing: luck. “It’s to the point that they record so many songs over the time period that they’re making the album, so you just hope to God that your song resonates with everybody that has to yes it,” he told Mixtape Daily. While many online reports are crediting Bruno Mars’ production outfit the Smeezingtons with production on the track, REO insists that by the time Tha Carter IV is released at midnight after the VMAs — where Wayne will also perform — and the CD’s liner notes revealed he will be properly credited as the producer and the Smeezingtons as writers on the song. Though REO was informed that his song had made the album, he didn’t believe it until C4 leaked Wednesday, and he still doesn’t quite believe it. “I’m still kinda paranoid until I pick up that damn CD myself,” he said. On the aptly titled track, Wayne gets reflective. The sample-free instrumental features an eerie wail in the background and a smothered kick- and snare-drum pattern. Its appeal isn’t in its intricacy, but rather in its driving emotion. “I had to listen to it a few times because I’ve just been hearing my beat for so many years, and I was like, ‘Yo, this guy got off on that sh–,’ ” he said of Wayne’s performance. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8.
