Cake Try For ‘Classy And Grandiose’ In Showroom Of Compassion

After a six-plus-year wait between albums, indie rockers didn’t feel obligated to ‘reinvent’ their sound. By Sabrina Rojas Weiss Cake’s John McCrea Photo: MTV News “It’s been a long time,” John McCrea sings on the second track of Cake ‘s new album, Showroom of Compassion, which dropped on Tuesday (January 11). For fans who have been waiting more than six years for a new release from the understated indie rockers, it sure has been. And what they’ll get after this long time is signature Cake , albeit with a few adjustments. “We’re not trying to change; we never have,” McCrea told MTV News. “I always thought that was so wasteful for musicians to feel so obligated to reinvent themselves every album. … That said, we do have reverb for the first time on my vocals. I think I had a moratorium against reverb all this time because I didn’t want to sound grandiose.” There’s also more piano, which McCrea said they avoided in the past “because we didn’t want to sound classy. Now we’re a little classier,” he deadpanned. “I think we’re doing what America wants us to do: being classy and grandiose. And rude, with the song ‘Sick of You.’ ” But none of this is news to the real die-hards, who have videotaped live performances of the new songs, studied the lyrics and are already singing along to every word at concerts. “It’s pretty great, especially if you go someplace like France, where the language is French and the album has only been out for a couple months, and everybody is singing the words in English,” said Vince DeFiore, who plays trumpet, keyboard and percussion. After spending years extricating themselves from a label deal, launching their own label and dealing with other issues that “musicians shouldn’t have to deal with in a normal situation,” Cake set about recording the album in an entirely solar-powered studio in Sacramento, California. The conversion turned out to be so efficient, they actually get a kickback from the city now. “As the value of recorded music descends to zero, we get a little check for $25,” McCrea said of their power-grid surplus. But a band whose songs are perennial favorites for use in ads (Apple, Snapple), TV shows (everything from “The Sopranos” to “Chuck”) and movies, shouldn’t have to worry about funds too much. Are there any Showroom songs they think are ripe for commercial use? ” ‘Easy to Crash’ — maybe that would be good for a car that has a really good safety record,” McCrea offered. “I might allow that. I’m pro safety.” Related Artists Cake

Kanye West, Jay-Z Watch The Throne Pairing Treads New Ground

Album collaborations are rare in hip-hop history. By Steven Roberts Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images Now that their first single, “H.A.M.,” has debuted, it looks like Jay-Z and Kanye West’s highly anticipated Watch the Throne album is actually happening. West tweeted about the collaboration in August , and confirmed it a few months later, saying the project would now be a full album . But few would have guessed it would be released so soon — right on the heels of West’s critically lauded My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy — and there aren’t too many examples in music history of two superstars collaborating on an album. Click for photos of other great collaborations in music history. There have been plenty of rock “supergroups” who have released albums over the years, starting with the likes of Cream (Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce) and Crosby, Stills and Nash (David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash) in the 1960s and continuing to Velvet Revolver (Slash, Scott Weiland, Dave Kushner, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum), Them Crooked Vultures (Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones) and Audioslave (Chris Cornell, Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk). However, there isn’t as rich a history of duos and groups coming together in hip-hop. The Wu-Tang Clan and N.W.A are as influential as any groups in hip-hop, but their members’ reputations didn’t flourish until they embarked on their own. And they were originally groups to begin with. The Firm saw Nas join forces with AZ, Foxy Brown and Nature under the production of Dr. Dre and the Trackmasters, but besides Nas, the group’s members are far from household names. More recently, Nas teamed up with Damian Marley to release Distant Relatives , but neither of these artists can touch the current popularity of West or Jay-Z. Barbara Streisand enlisted Barry Gibb to write an album for her during the height of the Bee Gees’ success in the late ’70s. In 1980, the pair produced Streisand’s Guilty , which went on to sell 20 million records and win a Grammy. While anyone would be hard-pressed to match that success, Jay-Z is no stranger to collaborative albums. He teamed up with R. Kelly to record Best of Both Worlds in 2002. At the time, Jay-Z was arguably the most-popular rapper and R. Kelly was certainly the biggest R&B artist. The two had previously collaborated successfully on Kelly’s “Fiesta” remix and Jay-Z’s “Guilty Until Proven Innocent,” so an album seemed like the ideal next step. By time the album would be released, however, R. Kelly was embroiled in very public trial. The pair would try again with Unfinished Business in 2004, but tensions eventually boiled over. Amid their respective controversies, both albums were certified platinum. Jay also collaborated with Linkin Park in 2004 to release Collision Course , which saw the group and Hov reworking and mashing up their previous recordings. Jay also unofficially collaborated with Danger Mouse on The Grey Album , a mash-up of Jay’s The Black Album and the Beatles’ self-titled White Album . The Grey Album would go on to launch the career of Danger Mouse, who has since released albums with Cee-Lo Green under the name Gnarls Barkley and The Shins’ James Mercer as the band Broken Bells. West produced the majority of Common’s Be and Finding Forever albums, and he was rumored to be working with Pharrell and Lupe Fiasco on a CRS (Child Rebel Soldier) album. Kanye West Turned Defiance Into Victory In 2010

Via Twitter, G.O.O.D. Fridays and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy ‘Ye came out on top this year. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Kanye West performs at the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images So, this Kanye West fella, you might have heard of him. He basically Swift-boated his career at the 2009 VMAs, went into a self-imposed exile and then triumphantly returned nearly a year later with what many have called the best album of 2010. Huh? In just over 12 months, West baffled critics by going from zero to hero, while still lashing out at the media and, with stunts like his #kanyeshrug hashtag, essentially proving he’s the same guy he always was. “I think the thing with Kanye, he really just stuck to the same script, which is basically, Iove me or hate me but the music is gonna be so great you have to deal with me,” Complex editor-in-chief Noah Callahan-Bever told MTV News. “And that’s been the story of his career since the beginning. I think this year, he happened to be loved or hated in such extremes at the end of 2009, going on a self-imposed exile in Hawaii, he really created a currency in the intrigue with what he was doing.” What he was doing was assembling a barrage of hip-hop’s best producers — including Q-Tip, the RZA, Pete Rock and more — and a diverse range of collaborators to help put together his artistic denouement: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The collection was bombastic musically and browbeating lyrically. The first shot, “Power,” was a sonic middle finger to his detractors. ‘Ye looked at his life and career and took stock of his place in the pop-culture ranks. It was a manifesto, of sorts, in which West declared that he was aware of his flaws and mistakes but everyone else can take them or leave them. “He really figured that great music will change things,” RapRadar and RESPECT. magazine’s Elliot Wilson explained. It wasn’t just the music, though, that helped Kanye come back into people’s good graces once again. He took to Twitter to voice this thoughts, sometimes in amusing non sequiturs, sometimes in revealing bunches of dispatches came in bunches, like when he addressed, once and for all, the Taylor Swift incident. In words that he couldn’t seem to put to melody or properly convey to a talk-show host, West simply took responsibility, apologized and moved on to the next track. And then he proceeded to change the subject with his string of G.O.O.D. Friday releases online. “He did select press but he made a lot of noise online,” New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica said. “I think he understood quickly how to make the best use of that medium.” But what the critics and everyone who catches themselves constantly humming songs from Fantasy agree on is that “he really brought it all back to the music,” as Callahan-Bever put it. “At the end of the day no Taylor Swift incident or ‘Today’ show appearance can take away from [that].” Related Videos Stories Of 2010 Related Photos Kanye West’s Amazing Year Related Artists Kanye West

Nicki Minaj Surprised By Success: ‘I Never Saw All Of This’

‘When [Lil] Wayne first called and reached out, I thought it was a joke,’ MC admits to MTV News. By By Hillary Crosley, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj and Sway Photo: MTV News What’s a girl without her dreams? Nicki Minaj has realized more of hers than most this year, from releasing her highly successful debut LP Pink Friday to becoming MTV News’ #6 Hottest MC in the Game . And, the Queens MC said she’s still surprised by her achievements. “A part of me expected it, because I wanted it so bad, but I never saw all of this,” the MC told MTV News’ Sway Calloway. “You know, I never would’ve imagined that I would’ve signed to [Lil] Wayne, number one.” On Monday, Minaj took time between takes while filming her video for “Moment 4 Life” with Drake to talk about becoming the queen of rap’s reigning crew. “[I] never imagined that Young Money/Cash Money would be the hip-hop crew,” she said. “To be signed to them is one thing, but to be signed to them when they’re at their height, when this has become like an insane movement? No, I never imagined that, because when Wayne first called and reached out, I thought it was a joke. “I’ve wanted this for a very long time, but I couldn’t — not even with a crystal ball — I could not have predicted these things would really happen this way.” Minaj has even outsold, if we’re counting weekly sales, one of her idols: Mr. Kanye West. West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy dropped November 22, the same day as Pink Friday . And while West garnered bigger opening-week numbers, Barbie has outpaced his album sales per week for the past 14 days. To date, Minaj’s release has sold 658,439 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan. “Girl power!” she said, with a giggle. Are you surprised by Nicki Minaj’s success this year? Kanye West Tops Billboard Chart With My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Nicki Minaj a strong #2 with her debut, Pink Friday. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Ben Hider/Getty Images It’s an understatement to say that Kanye West is on a roll. As predicted, ‘Ye’s fifth album, the hotly anticipated My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy , will easily top the Billboard 200 albums chart next week, after selling a robust 496,000 copies, giving the Chicago MC his fourth #1 debut in a row. Just behind him at #2 is the debut from Young Money First Lady Nicki Minaj , who moved 375,000 copies of her Pink Friday . The pair of rap superstars lead a parade of new faces in the top 10 during the biggest week of new album releases of the year, which helped propel the top 11 discs past the six-figure mark. After nearly two years of mixtapes and guest spots on other artists’ songs for Minaj and months of leaking tracks by West, the two friendly rivals prove that the traditional way of setting up albums may officially be a thing of the past. In fact, Minaj’s total is one of the highest ever for a female MC’s debut, falling just short of the 423,000 copies former Fugees singer Lauryn Hill scored in 1998 with her smash The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Justin Bieber ‘s Walmart-exclusive acoustic disc, My Worlds Acoustic, comes in at #7 on sales of 115,000, with My Chemical Romance just behind at #8 (112,000) with Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. Also breaking into the top 10 is Ne-Yo , whose Libra Scale hit #9, as the in-demand singer/songwriter sold just a shade under MCR. The rest of the top 10 features Susan Boyle at #3 with The Gift (263,000), Taylor Swift ‘s Speak Now, which moves up five spots to #4 as sales picked up by 64 percent after five weeks in stores to 241,000, putting her within spitting distance of 2 million albums sold. Jackie Evancho ‘s O Holy Night EP falls a few spots to #5 (142,000), while Rihanna slips three to #6 with her latest, Loud (141,000), and the cast of “Glee” round out the top 10 with their first Christmas collection (108,000). Kid Rock ‘s time in the top 10 was brief, as his classic-rock-influenced Born Free falls six spots to #11 in week two on sales of 104,000, mirroring the tumble by popera singer Josh Groban , who slips eight slots to #12 in the second week for his latest, Illuminations (99,000). Despite a digital hit with “We R Who We R,” Ke$ha ‘s second album of 2010, Cannibal, has a modest debut, landing at #15 (74,000), even as fellow pop provocateur Katy Perry ‘s Teenage Dream shoots up 18 slots to #16 (72,000) as sales increased by nearly 180 percent from the previous week. The soundtrack to the Christina Aguilera/Cher movie “Burlesque” matches the so-so box-office returns of that hoofing drama, with a soft debut at #18 (63,000), and G-Unit rapper Lloyd Banks has to settle for a #26 bow (44,000) for his H.F.M.2 (Hunger for More 2). It was also not stellar news for a pair of greatest-hits collections, as Pink ‘s Greatest Hits So Far! drops 14 spots to #29 in its second week (41,000), and Jay-Z ‘s Hits Collection sneaks into the top 50 at #43 (28,000) in its chart debut. Things are also looking grim for season-nine “American Idol” winner Lee DeWyze after his major-label debut, Live It Up, craters in its second week, nose-diving 74 slots to #93 as sales trailed off by 63 percent. DeWyze scored the worst-selling debut figures ever by an “Idol” winner last week. Over on the iTunes albums chart, it was mostly the same story, as Kanye took the #1 spot, followed by Nicki, the “Burlesque” soundtrack, the “Glee” Christmas album, Ke$ha, Rihanna, MCR, Swift, Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More and Kings of Leon’s Come Around Sundown. Perry still ruled on the iTunes single tally with her latest single, “Firework,” with Pink’s “Raise Your Glass” just behind, Ke$ha holding at #3 with “We R” and the Black Eyed Peas hitting #4 with “The Time (Dirty Bit).” iTunes doesn’t provide detailed sales results, but Rihanna was probably happy with locking down #5 with “What’s My Name?” and #7 with “Only Girl (in the World),” with Bruno Mars slipping in at #6 with “Grenade.” Rounding out the top 10 was Mars again at #8 with “Just the Way You Are,” Far East Movement with “Like a G6” and Trey Songz with “Bottoms Up.” The battle for the top will start all over again next week with the arrival of the Black Eyed Peas ‘ The Beginning , as well as new albums from Chrisette Michele , Jazmine Sullivan , Tim McGraw and Flo Rida , as well as yet another “Glee” cast disc. John Travolta, Kelly Preston Welcome Baby Boy

Son Benjamin was born on Tuesday night in Florida. By Gil Kaufman John Travolta and Kelly Preston Photo: Getty Images John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston have plenty to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. The couple welcomed their son, Benjamin, on Tuesday night at a hospital in Florida. A spokesperson for the actors confirmed the news to E! Online in a statement. “John, Kelly and their daughter Ella Bleu are ecstatic and very happy about the newest member of the family,” read the statement. “Both mother and baby are healthy and doing beautifully.” The baby weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces. The superstar duo announced in May that Preston, 48, was pregnant with their third child together a little more than a year after 16-year-old autistic son Jett died of a seizure in January 2009 while the family was on vacation in the Bahamas. Preston recently told People magazine that the family was in serious preparation mode as her due date approached. “I’ve been cleaning out everything in the house,” Preston said in September. “Ella has been helping too. She’s looking forward to being a big sister.” Travolta has been taking a hiatus from acting in the wake of the news about the baby and has kept his schedule light, appearing as the bald-headed baddie Charlie Wax in the little-seen thriller “From Paris with Love” alongside Jonathan Rhys Meyers earlier this year. At press time it did not appear that Travolta had any other roles in the can or on his upcoming schedule. Nicki Minaj, Justin Vernon, Teyana Taylor join ‘Ye at Bowery Ballroom to celebrate album release. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West performs at Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday Photo: Erez Avissar NEW YORK — Kanye West is nothing if not a showman, and on Tuesday, the rapper celebrated the release of his fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, with a performance that was as daring and dashing as it was fraught with traces of the petulant MC of the past. Shortly after midnight, West took to the stage at the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan accompanied by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and femcee/singer Teyana Taylor. The trio launched into “Dark Fantasy,” the spirited opening number of ‘Ye’s new set. Sporting a skin-tight dress, Taylor admirably belted out the chorus to the track and stuck around to ride shotgun with the G.O.O.D Music chief. “New York City, make some noise,” West told the gathering crowd after the opening selections. “Today, I’m gonna do My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. ” From there, West breezed through “Gorgeous,” “Power” and “All of the Lights,” the latter of which was a rumbling effort. Nicki Minaj joined Yeezy on stage for some album-release unity when the DJ spun “Monster,” sans Jay-Z. Rick Ross arrived onstage for the Bink-produced “Devil in a New Dress.” When West teased the first few chords of “Runaway,” the crowd — which included Diddy, music executives Lyor Cohen and Sylvia Rhone, ?uestlove, comedian Aziz Ansari and Selita Ebanks — erupted with approval. The dramatic rendition was easily the night’s highlight and featured artist Pusha T looked possessed on the microphone. Meanwhile, West was like a mad scientist pounding away on his MPC machine, creating musical backdrops to match almost each song. After over an hour of performing, Yeezy closed the proceedings with a stirring, slowed-down rendition of the song “Lost in the World,” the song he’s slated to perform at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday . He reappeared on stage shortly after for an encore and powered through brief versions of “Christian Dior Denim Flow” and “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” Although he finished with “Good Life,” it may have been the defiance of “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” that stuck with ‘Ye after the performance, when he spoke to the crowd. “As you know, it’s been an extremely hard year for me,” he began. “But getting back to music, G.O.O.D. Fridays, and the album … I never thought I’d say this, I wanna thank the magazines for perfect scores across the board. I always felt like I could do anything. “To do 100,000 digitally,” Ye continued, remarking on his first day tally in sales from Monday. “And slated to do 600,000 the first week. I’m not here to do mother—-ing politics. I’m here to make music. I’m not here to talk in no interviews; no one ask me any stupid f—ing questions.” Open the floodgates! It’s Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums.
