Then on Tuesday May 28th 9/8c, it’s the premiere of Tyler Perry’s The Haves and the Have Nots on OWN. From writer and director Tyler Perry, this new television series follows the complicated dynamic between the rich and powerful Cryer family and the hired help who work in their mansion set in Savannah, Georgia. From the outside, the Cryer’s are the enviable face of success and wealth, but behind the veil, the family’s dysfunction threatens to destroy their world of privilege. Cryer family patriarch Jim Cryer (John Schneider) is a powerful judge whose double-life, including tawdry affairs with high-priced escorts, puts his family and political ambitions at risk. His wife, Katheryn Cryer (Renée Lawless), is the ultimate matriarch portraying a loving and dutiful wife, but she is willing to do anything to protect her family’s status. Their son Wyatt (Aaron O’Connell) is a troubled angry jock who cares little for his own image and finds himself in and out of rehab. His sister Amanda (Jacyln Betham), a struggling law student, tries harder to live up to her parents’ expectations, but unknowingly has befriended a scurrilous young woman, Candace (Tika Sumpter), with the power to ruin the entire family. Again with children shooting children . 8-Year-Old Boy Shoots Friend With Rifle According to Raw Story A 5-year-old boy in Denton, Texas was reportedly in critical condition on Saturday after an accidental shooting involving an 8-year-old friend. KXAS-TV reported that the two boys were alone in a bedroom when the 8-year-old found a .22-caliber rifle and pointed it at the younger boy. Police said the older boy then accidentally shot his friend in the left side of his head. Two adults, including the 5-year-old boy’s grandfather, and a teenager were also inside the home at the time of the shooting. The younger boy was first taken to a local medical facility, then transported by air to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. KTVT-TV reported that he was on a ventilator as of Saturday evening. “It’s a very tragic accident, especially the day before Mother’s Day,” said Denton Police spokesperson Orlando Hinojosa. “Education is the most important thing about firearm safety. Just make sure your children know, if you do have weapons in the house, where they’re at, and for them not to be reachable.” This incident is the third shooting involving children in Texas this week, and the second involving a .22-caliber rifle. On Tuesday, Houston officials said a 5-year-old boy was handling one when he accidentally shot his 7-year-old brother while the two were taking a bath. Tyler Perry Defends Films And Dismisses Critics Tyler Perry talked about how he handles the criticism that is thrown his way and he says that the positive feedback that he gets from fans of his movies heavily overshadows the critics’ talk. Via HuffPo Live: “Here’s the thing about the critics, let me tell you this, I look for the truth in the critique, I honestly do. If there’s something in there that makes sense to me, I try to find and say ‘You know what, I thought that.’ But if it’s vitriolic, if it’s just venomous, I don’t pay attention to it. But for me, it’s very difficult because I have to hear the balance, right? So you have someone who says ‘This is awful, this is the worst thing I have ever seen.’ And then I’ve got a mother who’s sending me a letter saying, and these are real letters by the thousands on my Facebook page, ‘I was in an abusive relationship, I was able to get out when I saw Diary of a Mad Black Woman.’ One woman talked about having a cornea transplant and the first movie she wanted to see was mine. These are real stories that touch my heart in such a way that I’m thinking, why even pay attention to that when it’s the people that are moved and keep coming to see the films.” Tyler Perry knows what works and what doesn’t work for his fanbase. Poor Tyler Perry not only was his movie panned, but he tries to branch out creatively and ends up with a lawsuit. Man Sues Tyler Perry Over Temptation Movie According to TMZ Tyler Perry’s ‘Temptation’ has been called everything from “beyond dumb” to “flamboyantly bad” — yet a small-time screenwriter is suing, claiming Perry jacked the universally panned script from him. It’s the classic Hollywood sob story … a man from Gary, Ind., says Perry stole his idea for “Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor,” which didn’t wow critics, but did rake in $49 million. In the suit, William James says the plot is similar to “Lovers Kill,” which he wrote in 2009. The lawsuit is light on details … it just says both films center on a married couple … the wife is tempted by another man, and the affair ruins the marriage. Apparently James hasn’t seen “Unfaithful” … “Legends of the Fall” … “The English Patient” — need we go on? But here’s the best part: James doesn’t even know for sure that Perry ever saw his screenplay — in the suit, he claims he gave a copy to “an associate” of Oprah Winfrey, hoping it would make it to Perry. Reps for Perry and Lionsgate … the movie distributor, also named in the suit … had no comment. Madea couldn’t be reached, but we’re guessing she would’ve said, “Hellerrr!” … if she picked up our call. Black Senator Confirms He’s Gay During Senate Hearing An African-American politician in Nevada recently dropped a semi-bombshell before an audience of his peers when he confirmed during a marriage equality Senate vote hearing to repeal Nevada’s current ban on same-sex marriage that he was gay. via Think Progress Monday night, the Nevada Senate voted 12-9 to repeal the state’s constitutional amendment banning the recognition of same-sex couples’ marriages. That language would be replaced to recognize all marriages between two people, “regardless of gender.” The debate lasted over an hour, during which one Senator came out for the first time. Sen. Kelvin Atkinson (D) announced, “I’m black. I’m gay… I know this is the first time many of you have heard me say that I am a black, gay male.” Atkinson pointed out that his father’s interracial marriage would have similarly been banned decades ago, suggesting to detractors, “If this hurts your marriage, then your marriage was in trouble in the first place.” We wouldn’t be surprised to start seeing other politicians of color follow in this brave man’s footsteps sooner than later… Shutterstock
