‘American Idol’ Experts Talk Steven Tyler, Early Faves

‘Idol’ watchers praise New Orleans standouts and a Simon-less panel that seems to ‘having a blast.’ By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson on the season premiere of “American Idol” Photo: FOX Despite less-than-stellar initial ratings, “American Idol” is coming out of the blocks for its 10th season with something even more important than audience share, particularly for a reality show hitting late middle age, and that’s buzz. With a format that is well-beyond familiar by now, the injection of fresh blood via new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez has amped up the watercooler talk for a show that some had predicted was on the decline. Despite fears that the show would stumble without the harsh guiding hand of departed go-to judge Simon Cowell, MTV News’ , said instead of mourning the loss of King Cowell, he’s praising the rise of Tyler. “If anything, Steven Tyler’s wacky addition proved that it’s not a ‘mean judge’ that keeps me jazzed for ‘Idol.’ It’s an unhinged one,” said Cantiello about the entertaining, unpredictable shenanigans pulled out by Tyler in the first two nights of audition episodes this week. “Truth be told, I never realized how much I missed Paula [Abdul] last year. Tyler’s colorful language, zany metaphors and deafening jangly man-jewelry was just the entertaining wild card the two-night premiere needed to give it a must-see facelift.” Cantiello was glad that the new trio, which also includes sole returning judge Randy Jackson, didn’t fall into the same old “mean Simon” and “too-nice Paula” tropes. Lopez easily mixed Abdul’s sweetness with an undercurrent of Cowell’s honesty, while Tyler deftly pinwheeled between wacky Paula-isms amid stinging putdowns. And already he’s delivered one of the season’s top lines in his zinger to belcher Michael Perotto courtesy of “Tommy Boy”: “Did you eat a lot of paint chips as a child?” MJ Santilli, founder of one of the leading “Idol” blogs, MJsBigBlog.com , agreed with Cantiello, calling Tyler the “breakout” star on the show so far. “The new panel seems to be having a blast,” she said. “Fun has been sorely missing from the judges’ table the past couple of years. Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez’s enthusiasm has energized Randy Jackson. The fresh, new panel has me not missing Simon Cowell at all. Yet.” The real test, though, will be when the show goes live on March 1, which will provide proof of whether the apparent camaraderie among the three is real or the product of clever editing. But what about, you know, the singers, who are ostensibly the focus of the show? Santilli said the New Jersey singers on Wednesday night were mostly weak, but maybe that was because they held back the best stuff in order to let the new panelists shine and get some traction. “The New Orleans hopefuls had more standouts,” she said of Thursday night’s bunch. “At least, there are a couple that I remember, like the two teen tenors, Brett Loewenstern and Jacee Badeaux.” With the age limit dropped to 15 this year, Santilli suspects the producers are gunning for a teen winner in season 10, but with high schoolers having struggled in the live shows last year, it’s unclear if the young’uns can handle the pressure of performing in front of an audience. With less jokey singers and a higher talent ratio on Thursday night, Cantiello also thought New Orleans offered up some promising contestants we might see again in Hollywood. “I can’t say I’m looking forward to another three weeks of audition episodes, though,” he added. “Let’s get to the live shows already!” Do you agree with our experts about the first two nights of “Idol” auditions? Steven Tyler’s Best ‘American Idol’ Quotes From New Orleans

‘From my melodic sensibility, it was really delicious,’ new judge tells one contestant. By Kara Warner Steven Tyler Photo: FOX Night number two of “American Idol” season 10 was shorter than the first, but just as sweet, particularly if you are a fan of new judge Steven Tyler . The unpredictability and wackiness of the Aerosmith frontman is quickly becoming one of the most entertaining aspects of the show. “Idol” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe recently told MTV News that Tyler will be on a tape delay when the show goes live, but even though he is already bleeped out accordingly during these first few weeks of audition rounds, his unique commentary and compliments deserve a recap of their own. So without further ado, here are Thursday night’s (January 20) top Tyler-isms:

‘American Idol’ Exec Says ‘Legend’ Steven Tyler Will Be Good TV

‘You never know what he’s going to say. That, as a TV producer, you’re interested in,’ Nigel Lythgoe tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Matt Elias Nigel Lythgoe Photo: MTV News One thing that fans of “American Idol” can count on each season is a level of unpredictability, particularly once the show narrows the contestants down to 20 and the performance rounds and weekly eliminations begin. This season has upped the unpredictability factor in the form of new and potentially wayward, wacky judge Steven Tyler. When MTV News caught up with the reality show’s returning executive producer Nigel Lythgoe , we asked if he was worried about having to censor the Aerosmith frontman. “Oh yes, [I have] every worry about that,” Lythgoe readily admitted about Tyler’s sometimes-potty mouth. “But we’re on a delay, and he’s already done it. And then he forgets that he’s not allowed to say it, so he’ll say, ‘F—! Did I say f—? Oh f—. Sorry mate.’ ” Lythgoe — who also appears as a judge on Fox’s other reality talent show, “So You Think You Can Dance”— has said that a large part of Tyler’s appeal is not being able to predict what he’ll say or do. “He has come through that whole rock and roll circus,” said Lythgoe of Tyler , whom he also hopes will perform on the show, along with judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson, at some point. “Why wouldn’t you want a legend there? You never know what he’s going to say. That, as a TV producer, you’re interested in.” As for 62-year-old rock icon Tyler , he seemed genuinely excited about the entire process but with one concern as the show prepares for its season 10 kickoff. “The part that’s a little difficult is judging young kids,” he said this week. “It took me a couple minutes to get into the role of that, but I’ve grown accustomed to it and it’s fun and I get to sit next to J.Lo and Randy taking [the] you-know-what out of everybody.” Don’t miss our “American Idol” live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests, on MTV.com tonight at 10 p.m. ET. Afrojack Talks His Part In Chris Brown’s ‘Look At Me Now’

Dutch dance producer tells MTV News how he contributed to C. Breezy’s Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, Diplo collabo. By Akshay Bhansali Afrojack in an MTV News Skype interview Photo: MTV News Afrojack already had reason to celebrate as he headed into the New Year. The Dutch dance-music producer’s pop-dance single “Take Over Control,” featuring singer Eva Simons, made the top 25 on Billboard ‘s Dance/Club Play Songs chart in December. And now his second U.S. release, packed with hip-hop heavy-hitters, seems primed for chart success. MTV News caught up with the EDM producer (born Nick van de Wall) for a skype chat last week, and he talked about his contribution to Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now,” the latest offering from the singer’s upcoming F.A.M.E. album. The track is a fast-rapping flurry of awesome self-indulgence courtesy of Busta Rhymes, Lil Wayne and Chris, with an eerie downtempo beat cooked up by chefs Afrojack and Diplo. The pair of producers previously collaborated on “Pon De floor,” off Diplo’s Major Lazer full-length release, and according to Afrojack, “Look at Me Now” is the product of a beat he’d passed along to the Philadelphia beatsmith. “Yeah, Diplo called me,” Afrojack recalled. “He was like, ‘We are in the studio right now, and we are gonna do a track on the beat.’ And I was like, ‘OK, whatever. Have fun.’ ” Eventually, “Look at Me Now,” was born. While Afrojack sounded casual about the song’s evolution, he said he’s certainly pleased with the finished product. “I just love these kind of people on a track like this,” he said. “It’s like hip-hop, but really weird kind of hip-hop. “Busta’s verse on it is really sick,” he continued. “It’s like I can’t even hear what he said, but I love the part where he goes [ mimics Busta’s rapid flow ], and then pauses and goes rapping really quickly. And I don’t know how to do it, I don’t even try. But it was really, really cool.” So what’s next for Afrojack? Apart from working on a remix for Pitbull , he premiered a new single exclusively for MTV News that we will be sharing with you very soon. All you Afrojack fans stay tuned! ‘American Idol’ alum says the superstars will bring amazing fashion to the new season. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Damian Vaca Adam Lambert Photo: MTV News As the newly shaken-up “American Idol” debuts on Wednesday (January 19), fans are ready to weigh in on how spankin’ new judges, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, will fare — and how they’ll look. MTV News recently caught up with “Idol” alum Adam Lambert at the season-three premiere of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” in Los Angeles, and he mused that when it comes to fashion, both Lopez and Tyler will bring their A-list style game. “I’m sure they’re gonna be top-of-the-notch. Steven Tyler, I mean, he’s a legend. And J. Lo has always been beautiful. I remember when I was a kid graduating high school and ‘Waiting for Tonight’ came out. Remember that video? And she had all the rhinestones on her face and she just looked like just dewy and stunning and amazing,” Lambert said. “I’m really looking forward to [seeing their fashion] too.” While MTV News’ “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello is set to host the live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon” right after “Idol” airs, at 10 p.m. ET Wednesday (January 19) on MTV.com, Lambert shied away from comparing the two music pros’ judging style. He maintained that the duo aren’t likely to duke it out for top-judge honors. The season-eight runner-up said Lopez and Tyler are approaching the competition from different vantage points, and pitting their judging styles against each other is probably a futile “Idol” fan exercise. “They’re birds of a different feather, but they’re gonna flock together,” he said. Even though Lambert has more “Idol” experience than the newbie judges, he didn’t have any advice to offer Lopez or Tyler as they take their seats on live television for the first time. In fact, he insisted he’d welcome pointers from the superstar critics anytime. “I want advice from them,” Lambert smiled. “I will not give Steven Tyler or J. Lo any advice. That’s not my place.” Are you looking forward to the “American Idol” premiere? Let us know in the comments! ‘Breaking Dawn’ Star Peter Facinelli Says Shooting Final Scene Was ‘Sad’

‘It got a little melancholy,’ the actor said of the recently filmed last scene of ‘The Twilight Saga’ finale. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Peter Facinelli Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Production on the two parts of “Breaking Dawn” is expected to stretch well into April, with the cast eventually departing Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to finish up shooting on the final “Twilight Saga” films in Vancouver, Canada. But whereas the makers of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” chose to save that franchise’s final scene until the very end of production, the “Breaking Dawn” cast has already shot the last scene of their finale film — and it apparently was a pretty gloomy experience. “The other day when we shot that ending sequence, we knew that was the ending of the last two movies and it got a little melancholy,” Peter Facinelli, who plays Dr. Carlisle Cullen, told us on the red carpet at the Golden Globes on Sunday. “It was sad.” While the 37-year-old actor wouldn’t delve into detail about the scene — “Lots of vampires,” he teased — Robert Pattinson , also walking the Globes carpet, dished about the lengthy climax toward the end of “Breaking Dawn, Part 2.” “There’s like a 27-minute sequence in the final sequence, and it takes forever to shoot,” he revealed. “There’s about 75 people in it. Being on a piece of fake snow surrounded by green screen for like a month, it’s driving me absolutely insane.” Facinelli, too, admitted that filming the final fight has meant the cast must suffer through a “brutal” production schedule, but he credited director Bill Condon with creating a calm, creative working environment. “Bill Condon’s fantastic,” he said. “He’s such a great actors’ director. He’s really collaborative. He’s a joy to work with. He’s very relaxed all the time. You never see him sweat.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Steven Tyler: An ‘American Idol’ Cheat Sheet

As Aerosmith frontman kicks off TV gig, we look back on the rocker’s decades-long highs and lows as part of iconic band. By Gil Kaufman “American Idol” judge Steven Tyler Photo: Tony Duran / FOX Steven Tyler has seen it all. The famously loud and proud singer of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Aerosmith has experienced the highest highs of the music business, as well as the deepest depths of career (and personal) misery. In other words, he’s perfectly qualified to be a judge on “American Idol.” Though his selection as part of the new three-judge panel on America’s favorite reality singing show was somewhat of a left-field surprise to his bandmates, the program’s fans and many critics, Tyler seems excited and enthusiastic about the gig as season 10 gets under way Wednesday night. He recently admitted that he hadn’t really watched the show before because of his busy schedule with the Boston-bred hard rock icons (and, ahem, the occasional trip to rehab), but Tyler told The Daily Beast that he sees his “Idol” run as a new wrinkle in his four-decade-plus career. “Television is just an extension of what I’ve always done,” he said. “I don’t think people have seen that Italian side of me, the side of me that can work a room like nobody’s business. It’s what I am. It’s something that people haven’t seen unless there was a party backstage after a show because that ominous person that’s out of his mind onstage is not the same guy that’s sitting in front of cameras.” He’s been everywhere, seen everything and lived to tell about it. Clearly, if there’s anyone who knows what it takes to be a star — and to have enduring success — it’s Tyler. He formed Aerosmith in Boston in 1970, along with guitarist and longtime foil Joe Perry, winning over a loyal fanbase thanks to their white-hot, blues-drenched live sets and Tyler’s magnetic stage presence. The band signed with Columbia Records in 1972 and began an ultra-successful run that spanned the remainder of the decade, releasing classics albums like Toys in the Attic and Rocks, along with iconic singles like “Dream On,” “Same Old Song and Dance,” “Sweet Emotion” and “Walk This Way.” Long story short, the success led to excess and the band limped into the ’80s without Perry. A career resurgence in the late ’80s and early ’90s put Aerosmith back on top of their game with a new generation of radio-friendly hits and the bandmates’ newfound sobriety. In the 2000s, Aerosmith were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and continued to tour and release albums. But in 2009, during an Aerosmith gig at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, Tyler fell off the stage into the crowd, leading to the cancellation of their summer tour and then a string of rumors that he’d left the band to pursue a solo career. Yet, despite all of that, Aerosmith still hit the road again this past summer, with Tyler very much onboard after another stint in rehab. So, why, after one of the most successful runs in rock history, would the frontman head to “American Idol”? Sirius satellite radio host Howard Stern asked his old friend that question on Tuesday morning (January 18), and Tyler said it made perfect sense to him. “It was just taking something else other than Aerosmith, it doesn’t mean the band’s over,” said Tyler, 62, noting that last summer’s tour was one of the best he could remember, but that he needed a bit of a break to help him heal from his chronic foot condition. “I needed a rest for [my foot] and it was just something else I could get into. I wanted to see if this would be a good fit.” Setting aside his belief that no one can really be a star without paying their dues in a million dingy clubs (though his wording was much more colorful on Stern’s show), Tyler said he realized it’s a new day in the music biz and, after whittling down 700 contestants to 20, he finally gets the show. “It’s something that I’ve never got into because I never caught the rhythm of the show. When you watch it, you kind of fall in love with this guy … there’s some people who sing their ass off.” After seeing a couple dozen singers who blew him away, Tyler admitted that he’s looking for the whole package: vocals, songwriting ability and the originality that marks a star. “I just thought, ‘What the f—? I get to sit next to J. Lo? … I’m looking for the [Janis] Joplin, the Christina Aguilera. Someone that’s not being Vocoded and trimmed and primped and done up. I’m looking for that natural person that can go in and sing … and the times that I found one, I teared up out there.” As for whether the show will break up the band, which has endured epic battles with drugs, jealousy and managerial interference, Tyler said, simply, hell no. ” ‘Idol’ ‘s gonna take this band up 10 notches!” he promised.
