‘Dodgeball’ Sequel − Good For Humanity & Lance Armstrong, Too?

Let the rehabilitation of Lance Armstrong begin?   The Hollywood Reporter reports that Ben Stiller and his producing partner Stuart Cornfeld have commissioned screenwriter Clay Tarver to write a sequel to Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story , and I think it could be a key public-relations opportunity for the disgraced Tour de France cyclist. If  your memory needs recycling (ba-dump-bump!), Armstrong appears in a key cameo in the movie, where Vince Vaughn’s character, Average Joe’s Gym owner Peter La Fleur is about to quit his underdog team and Armstrong shames him into reconsidering . In the aftermath of Armstrong’s doping scandal, that scene looks ironic and tragic today. But…America loves comeback stories, and if the former champion would be willing to take it on the chin comedically, I bet he could make a little progress in rehabilitating his tarnished image post-Oprah. The sequel is supposed to be about Vaughn’s character and Stiller’s character, White Goodman from Globo Gym , teaming up to battle “an even bigger threat,” as the publication reported.  And Armstrong’s cameo could be as simple as having him seek redemption on La Fleur’s team or play for one of the competitors that Average Joe’s faces.  Either way, he should get beaned real good in a creative elimination scene. Even better: an encounter between La Fleur and Armstrong that would reference the first cameo. Once again, Armstrong would have to agree to take it on the chin. That could be deep and cathartic in a comedic way. It would definitely be more effective than drumming for the reggae band Lance Herbstrong, which Armstrong did on April 20 at the Austin Reggae Festival: Give The Drummer Some…Redemption While we’re on the subject of returning Dodgeball characters, Jason Bateman ‘s loopy ESPN 8 — The Ocho! — color commentator Pepper Brooks is a must . AWOLNATION Still The ‘Underdog’ On Next Album

‘There’s a little chip on my shoulder,’ frontman Aaron Bruno tells MTV News of writing the follow-up to the band’s Megalithic Symphony. By James Montgomery AWOLNATION’s Aaron Bruno Photo: MTV News AWOLNATION’s Aaron Bruno already knows how he wants the follow-up to his band’s breakout (and epically titled) Megalithic Symphony album to sound. The key now is finding the time to actually write it. “I think the next record will be a little more raw, and a little more aggro, and a little stranger, but still have the nursery-rhyme feel of melody, because that’s the only way I know how to write,” he told MTV News. “I’m working on it now [while the band is on tour] and, really, it’s the only thing keeping me sane. Every day I wake up, and I’m so excited to first of all find a shower, and then have a coffee, and then do a couple of other things that I probably can’t mention, and then open up the computer and just see what happens. … It’s a nice break from the routine [of] playing the same old songs, meeting the same people, waking up at the same venues, same parking lots across the country.” Yes, such is life for AWOLNATION, who went from relative unknowns to rock-radio monsters based on a relentless tour schedule and the strength of hit singles “Sail” and “Not Your Fault.” Since bursting onto the radar, Bruno has seemingly spent every waking minute on the road, and it doesn’t look like that will change much anytime soon (AWOL are currently touring until the end of July). So needless to say, he’s itching to break the cycle and get into the studio to begin work on the new album. And no, he’s not about to shy away from the expectations that come with following a hit album. “I got a little chip on my shoulder with the songwriting and I’ve got a lot to say about the world, so there’s a little bit of a fist on this new record that I’m excited about,” he said. “I’ve always been the underdog my whole life, and the guys in my band, we all came up in the same situation, so this success is totally new and foreign for us, so I want to maintain the hunger of being the underdog and never feel complacent with the success and always want to reach more ears. Not necessarily to make money, but because I feel the music’s important.” And while Bruno’s relishing the opportunity to prove the naysayers wrong, he’s also trying to stop and appreciate just how far his band has come. Of course, given his nature, that’s proving to be easier said than done. “All of this seems like a joke to me. It doesn’t seem real. I wake up every day and I have to remind myself … this is really happening, it’s OK to enjoy it,” he laughed. “But I’ve had a hard time doing that because I’m constantly focused on the next thing.” Are you looking forward to new music from AWOLNation? Skylar Laine Asks "Where Do Broken Hearts Go?"

Skylar Laine says she’s actually never sung a Whitney Houston song before. With “Where Do Broken Hearts Go,” she may have done the late icon justice. To be sure, Skylar Laineis no Whitney Houston … or even Jessica Sanchez . However, American Idol often rewards the underdog who strays out of his or her genre and picks up unfamiliar or challenging material quickly. She doesn’t sound like Whitney, but Skylar is who she is, and that’s formidable – a country girl who has proved she can sing anything. Take a listen: Skylar Laine – “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” (American Idol Top 13)

Gina Carano ‘In Control’ Of Male ‘Haywire’ Co-Stars

‘I didn’t have any issue [doing] this fight scene with a woman, because I was the underdog,’ Ewan McGregor tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Gina Carano in “Haywire” Photo: Claudette Barius / Five Continents Imports If you like your movies with a lot of action, kick-ass fight sequences and actors who do their own stunts, look no further than this week’s new thriller “Haywire” to satisfy those needs. The concept for the film was born after director Steven Soderbergh saw footage of MMA fighter Gina Carano in the cage, which inspired the Oscar winner to build a film around her. “Haywire” revolves around a black-ops supersoldier (Carano) who seeks the ultimate revenge after she is betrayed by her colleagues, played by the very capable Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas. MTV News recently caught up with Carano, Tatum and McGregor to discuss the very realistic fight sequences and how the guys were more than game for getting their butts kicked by a woman. “The physicality, that was fun to me. I didn’t have to hurt anybody,” Carano said of the difference between the film’s choreographed fights versus her MMA matches. “I didn’t have to worry about getting choked out, and there were no egos with any of the actors. They all wanted to do all their own stunts, and a lot of people around me were like, ‘Gina, that’s not normal. You’ve got some beautiful people to work with and a beautiful first experience.’ ” “To be totally honest, she’s better than every guy I’ve ever fought, really, other than one, and he was a strike force fighter as well,” Tatum admitted of his co-star, with whom he shares an intense bone-breaking exchange during the first five minutes of the film. “I can say this without any amount of trying to say it for the movie: I challenge anyone to come and fight her or even move with her. She’s by far the best athlete I’ve ever gotten a chance to move with. She’s so strong and in control, it’s just ridiculously unprecedented in my opinion.” McGregor added that he didn’t even think about the man-vs.-woman factor, only that it was the most appropriate scenario for his manipulative, weasel-like character. “There was a slight difference in our fight scene together. For me, I didn’t ever have any issue with the fact that I was having to do this fight scene with a woman, because I was the underdog,” he said. “There was no question that I was going to get killed if I didn’t manage to get away.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Haywire.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Justin Bieber 3-D Movie Is ‘A Story For Our Time,’ Director Says

‘We’re gonna tell the underdog story of where he came from,’ Jon Chu says of the Bieb’s YouTube-fueled success. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Frederick Breedon/ Getty Images Valentine’s Day weekend won’t just be lovers in 2011. Devoted Beliebers are counting down to the moment they can check out Justin Bieber’s 3-D movie . Director Jon Chu promises fans will get an in-depth look at what it’s like to be the VMA-nominated singer . “Well, we’re working on it right now. We’ve been touring with him, so we’ve been working on it,” Chu (“Step Up 3D”) told MTV News about the project. “The movie comes out in five months, so we’re deep in it. It’s been fun to get to know Justin. He’s a really cool guy and we’re gonna make a really fun movie.” Those who have yet to be infected with Bieber Fever should take note: This movie is for fans and non-fans alike, according to Chu. “[It’s] a movie for his fans, a movie for people who don’t know him, and we’re gonna tell the underdog story of where he came from,” he explained. “Because it’s a really fascinating story and it has a lot to do with our sort of digital lifestyle now. He was able to do what corporations try to do now when they use YouTube and they don’t even know what to do with it yet. It’s a pretty cool story for our time.” As for the film’s format, Chu explained that it will be a mixture of concert footage and some documentary-style scenes. “There’s not going to be acted-out scenes and I can’t talk about the rest. It’s not your typical concert film and it’s not going to be a biopic … but it is about his life. I think it’s more of a documentary. We’re going to figure it out as we go,” he said. As for how much of it will be in 3-D, he said, “You’ll have to see it. We’re figuring that out now.” Chu had more praise for Bieber, telling us the singer has real staying power, as evidenced by artists like Kanye West seeking him out for collaborations. “He … isn’t a flash in the pan,” Chu said. “He has legitimate talent and I think other artists recognize that.” What part of Justin’s biography do you most want to see played out in 3-D?
