Official Gulf Spill Estimate Doubled: There’s Been an Exxon Valdez-Sized Spill Every 8 Days

Image via NASA The latest estimate from the federal government for the amount of oil gushing into the Gulf every day has just been doubled — up from 12,000 – 19,000 barrels to 25,000 – 30,000. These new numbers, which many scientists still feel low ball the true amount, mean that a spill the size of the entire Exxon Valdez tragedy has occurred every 8-10 days since the leak first began. And yes, seeing as how we’re nearly two months into this spill, that means the … Read the full story on TreeHugger

New research, however, has shown that these corals are not homogeneous. Instead, they consist of a variety of distinct and highly-specialized species—a finding that could have seriou… Read the full story on TreeHugger

What the Hell is the Murkowski Amendment?

The Murkowski amendment , which is currently heading to the Senate floor for a vote, is around one sentence long. It’s simple, and potentially devastating. It’s solely stated goal is overturning the endangerment finding filed by the EPA that ruled greenhouse gases are a harmful pollutant, and threaten public well-being. Which would both effectively stop the EPA from being able to clamp down on the nation’s heaviest greenhouse gas polluters and toss Obama’s new, highly touted national fuel economy standard into the trash heap… Read the full story on TreeHugger

White House Pledges $400 Million to Palestinians

A White House statement calls the $400 million aid package announced Wednesday “a down payment on the United States’ commitment to Palestinians in Gaza, who deserve a better life and expanded opportunities, and the chance to take part in building a viable, independent state of Palestine, together with those who live in the West Bank.” The commitment includes money for new schools, infrastructure and repairs throughout the Palestinian territories, but, as the Guardian points out, there’s no mention of how the U.S. plans to get banned construction materials past Israel and Egypt’s blockade of Gaza.
