Andrew Koenig Reported Missing

Actor Andrew Koenig, who starred on Growing Pains back in the day, has been reported missing, the Vancouver Police say. He has not been seen in a week. Koenig, who played Mike Seaver’s ( Kirk Cameron ) pal Boner, was supposed to be on a flight back to the United States on February 16, but did not check in. He was reportedly last seen a week ago. His parents have described their son as “suffering from depression” and ” not doing good ” in the last few weeks. Judy and Walter Koenig (who played Pavel Chekov in the Star Trek series) say they last heard from Andrew February 9. They also say his cell phone is off. We’re hoping for the safe return of Andrew Koenig. The last time his phone received a text was February 16 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was last seen at a bakery in the Stanley Park area of Vancouver. Lance Miccio, who worked with him on several projects, reached out to him earlier this month. Koening passed, saying he was “not going to work anymore.” Right around that time, Miccio says Andrew Koenig (who he also said was depressed) dropped off a bag of Miccio’s stuff. Miccio hasn’t spoken to him since. The family is asking that anyone with information immediately contact Detective Raymond Payette of the Vancouver Police Department at 604-717-2534.

What do we talk about when we talk about snow ? Does it matter? Those are some cute dogs, right? [CLICK THEM.] It matters to the NYT’s Weddings & Celebrations section, though, and thus, matters to Gawker Weddings Expert Phyllis Nefler . In today’s op-ed in the New York Times Thomas ” The World Is Phat ” Friedman implored Americans to join together and become a “generation that renews, refreshes, re-energizes and rebuilds America for the 21st century,” dubbing this utopian cohort “The Regeneration.” Note to Friedman: you may want to skip over the Styles Section this weekend, lest you see the truth that we’re really just The Ski Generation. Perhaps it’s Olympic fever; more likely it’s just the Times relying on ski-related stories in the winter the way they’re all Montauk this and Wainscott that in the summer. Whatever the reason, Styles leads with a story about “the return of the American ski bum,” that Cloudveil-clad archetype, and later reminds us that the couples who ski together surely will be together. [ Ed. Projecting much hmm?!? ] Elizabeth Scott and Kris Barber first met when they worked together at Kansas City investment bank. (Is that like Equities in Dallas ?) It wasn’t until they “were part of a ski house in Breckenridge, Colo. for several winters” that their romance blossomed “through winters of skiing and summers of biking.” And because he didn’t want to get engaged on a pending trip to Europe — “too much of a cliche” — Barber instead went with a completely novel plan: on a hike in the the mountains. Near the ski house, natch. Scott and Barber are well on their way to becoming as badass as Polly Samuels and Andrew McLean , who were featured in Vows in 2005 and are checked up on this weekend. The pair’s love for the sport was such that they were married at “Our Lady of the Snows” chapel in Alta, walking out of the chapel “under an archway of ski poles held aloft by friends, many in ski boots.” McLean is well known in the skiing community for his backcountry prowess—he has skied in areas as far flung as New Zealand and Iran, was featured in the excellent and mindboggling documentary Steep , and keeps a website called StraightChuter.com —while Samuels went from being a prosecutor in the New York DA’s office to working as a lawyer in Park City. Ms. McLean, once a Type A Manhattan girl, is now a Type A mountain girl. In her own way, she is even more extreme than he is. In 2007 while five months pregnant with their first child, Mira, she accompanied him on a hut-to-hut trip in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco. In New Zealand in 2006, he went ski mountaineering while she spent a week swimming with dolphins. Now 40, she competes with him in endurance races, including an annual one in which competitors climb up and ski down Sunlight Mountain Resort in Glenwood Springs, Colo. – continuously for 24 hours. “It doesn’t get really interesting until after midnight when you start hallucinating,” she said. They met in a yurt, and he proposed atop Mount Kilimanjaro. Their daughter, who is 2, “already has her own quiver of skis — ones for backcountry, others for resort skiing, all about the lentgh of a baguette.” Her name is Mira, after “a craggy, steep, continuous, daunting alpine face in Alaska.” Maybe you should try out that bunny hill after all. Elsewhere this weekend, a freelance photographer married a videographer who filmed “a whale rescue on ‘Untamed and Uncut’ on Animal Planet” (insert dork jokes here); the daughter of New York Knicks announcer John Andariese married a flight lieutenant in the British Royal Air Force , and I really hope Gus Johnson gave a toast at the wedding; and a raging health care reformer — hey, she likes Nader! — finally agreed to get married so that her fiance could get something a lil stronger than medicinal tea for his kidney stones. Say what you will, she’s got the “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue” thing down pat. That last couple’s story, by the way, included this romantic vignette: Then, in 2004, Mr. Swift returned to Akron for Christmas and encountered Ms. Robbins at a local bar. When she said, “Let’s do a shot later,” he interpreted it as a polite yet definitive blow off. But as last call rolled around, Mr. Swift sidled up to her and said, “How about that shot?” “It was one of those running-through-the-lilies kind of moments,” she said. If that’s running through the lilies then my life is freaking Chariots of Fire. Olympic Skier Will Brandenburg Gushes Over ‘Girl-Next-Door’ Taylor Swift

‘I think me and Taylor could have a really good time,’ he tells MTV News. By Hillary Crosley Photo: MTV News There might be a Taylor Swift backlash happening online after her performance and wins at the Grammys, but Winter Olympics skier Will Brandenburg is definitely on Team Taylor. The Spokane, Washington, native, along with fellow skier and gold medalist Ted Ligety, chatted with MTV News on Saturday about competing for the United States and exactly what a “super combine” is. “I do the super combine [event, which is] one run of downhill, the fastest event in skiing, and one run of the slowest event in skiing, so it’s two different ends of the spectrum,” Bradenburg explained. “[We go] 80, 90, 95 miles per hour. We’re pretty comfortable on our skis. We’ve been doing it since we were little, so when you’re going that fast, you don’t know you’re going that fast. Feels like you’re going 35 miles per hour in your pickup truck. It winds up like, ‘I was just clocked at 83!’ ” But then the conversation quickly turned to what the two listened to in preparation for their competitions, and in addition to Kings of Leon, Ligety blurted out that Brandenburg really loved Taylor Swift. “He’s actually a really big Taylor Swift fan,” Ligety revealed. “She’s just got that girl-next-door attitude. I like it, I like it a lot,” Brandenburg said in defense of his crush. “I think me and Taylor could have a really good time. I was just thinking [about] a nice little dinner and a movie and a date, so if you’re out there, Taylor, look me up. Will you be my valentine?” Brandenburg, 23, almost didn’t compete in this year’s Winter Olympics after sustaining a knee injury early last year following a bone bruise. But instead of bowing out, Brandenburg worked out at the gym every day during the summer to repair his body. “It was tough. I couldn’t run or jump until July,” Brandenburg told Spokane’s Spokesman-Review . “I’ve never put more into it in my life, trying to get healthy, because I wasn’t just trying to get to the Olympics. I was trying to continue my career in ski racing.” MTV News is on the ground in Vancouver all week, so stay tuned for more coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Biden says Cheney is misinformed or misleading

Vice President Joe Biden on Sunday belittled Dick Cheney's criticism of the Obama administration's commitment to fighting terrorism as either “misinformed or he is misinforming” and said the Iraq war wasn't worth it because of “the horrible price” paid. The former vice president fired back gently at his successor, saying, “I guess I shouldn't be surprised by my friend Joe Biden.” Cheney also said that he disagreed with decisions by Bush officials to place shoe bomber Richard Reid on trial in civilian court and to release terrorism suspects from the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The public back-and-forth between current and former administrations played out across the Sunday talks like a pingpong match: Biden's NBC appearance taped Saturday night from the Olympics in Canada, allowing Cheney to respond on ABC's “This Week,” before Biden answered later on CBS' “Face the Nation.” In getting in the last word, Biden said: “Thank God the last administration didn't listen to him in the end” on how to handle terrorism suspects. The vice president insisted again that the ongoing debate on the best way to bring terrorist suspects to justice ignored that the Obama administration was acting on the precedents set by the Bush administration. Cheney was vice president under Bush for eight years. “His fight seems to be with the last administration. We did exactly the same thing,” Biden said, and he accused Cheney of not listening to what's going on around him and of trying to rewrite history. Cheney has been a leading Republican critic of the Obama administration's handling of national security, contending that President Barack Obama is “trying to pretend” that the U.S. is not at war with terrorists. The result, Cheney says, is that Americans are less safe. Biden said that under Obama's direction, the U.S. has been more successful at killing al-Qaida leaders and their followers than it was during the years George W. Bush and Cheney were in the White House. “We've eliminated 12 of their top 20 people. We have taken out 100 of their associates,” said Biden. “They are in fact not able to do anything remotely like they were in the past. They are on the run. I don't know where Dick Cheney has been. Look, it's one thing, again, to criticize. It's another thing to sort of rewrite history. What is he talking about?” Cheney, Biden said, “either is misinformed or he is misinforming. But the facts are that his assertions are not accurate.” Biden also said the Iraq war hasn't been worth its “horrible price” and that the Bush mishandled it from the outset by taking its “eye off the ball.” That, he said, left the U.S. in a more dangerous position in Afghanistan, the al-Qaida stronghold where Osama bin Laden and his cohorts plotted the Sept 11 terror attacks. The war has also cost the United States support from other nations around the world, he said. Cheney took issue with Biden's assertion that the Obama White House had been successful in winding down the Iraq war. “For them to try to take credit for what happened in Iraq is a little strange,” Cheney said. “It ought to go with a healthy dose of 'thank you, George Bush.'” Still, Biden said Iraq will have successful parliamentary elections next month and the U.S. is likely to bring home some 90,000 combat troops by summer's end. More than 4,370 U.S. military personnel have died in Iraq since Bush ordered the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 to overthrow Saddam Hussein. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been wounded or killed. Turning to the main issue on the minds of most voters, Biden said Obama inherited a shrinking economy with financial institutions that were on the edge of collapse, threatening to move the world into a depression. Biden said the economy expanded at 5.8 percent during the last quarter and the U.S. has “stopped the hemorrhaging of jobs.” He said there was “tangible evidence” economy was moving in the right direction. By the time of November's elections, he said, “in addition to bringing home 90,000 American troops, troops out of Iraq, the story of this administration is going to be more clearly told, and we're going to just fine.” http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_BIDEN_CHENEY?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&… added by: xiola

How to Destroy a Perfectly Good Fake Trend Story

We all know that New York Times fake trend stories are annoying because they are 1) fake, and 2) trend stories. But do not neglect their third worst quality: many are terribly written. Allow us to show you. The underlying cause of the poorest-written portions of most fake trend stories is the insistence by NYT editors that every fake trend story have some sort of “stats” graf—a graf that attempts to force a clearly made-up premise into an empirically justifiable form. Since fake trend stories are, by definition, pure bullshit, this requirement often results in the most tortured or transparently ridiculous part of what could have been a perfectly decent story, had it been upfront about its total lack of journalistic merit. Examples: The Run-On Nightmare: The NYT’s in-house grammar scold highlights this (14 verb forms in one sentence!), from last month’s “H ipsters are living in cold apartments ” piece: As Americans across the country wrestle with spouses and their thermostats over how low to go – as they join contests like Freeze Yer Buns, now in its third year, a challenge posed by Deanna Duke, a Seattle-based environmental blogger who calls herself the Crunchy Chicken, to lower the thermostat to around 55 degrees, or follow the lead of the Maine couple trying to live comfortably in a furnace-free house and blogging about it in their Cold House Journal – there are those who are living nearly without heat by choice, and doing just fine, thank you very much. The Unsupported Anecdote-to-Wide Angle Pivot: From September’s ” Everybody is jogging with their babies now ” fitness piece : Mrs. Keith is an extreme example of an increasingly common breed of runner: parents who hit the road with their offspring in jogging strollers, typically single or double versions with two 16-inch inflatable tires in back and a single tire in front. But, experts say, there is a learning curve to running with a stroller. The Futile Attempt to Disprove Its Own Acknowledgment of Preposterousness: From Guy Trebay’s lively expos

Anonymous Pledge to Fight Scientologist Efforts in Haiti

Anonymous, the internet-based group that has waged sporadic wars on Scientology over the last two years, has released a new letter. Prompted, apparently, by the fawning Today Show piece on Scientologists in Haiti they intend to act. The group, given to wearing V for Vendetta Guy Fawkes masks, and pictured above during widely publized protests against the church in 2008, released this message.
