Set It Off: Queen Latifah Says Her ‘Toughest Role’ Was Playing A Gay Character

Interesting… Queen Latifah Talks Playing Cleo In “Set It Off” An in-depth interview with Queen Latifah is getting national attention. In the latest issue of InStyle , Queen chats with none other than Tracee Ellis Ross who was tapped by the publication to work as a guest editor for a piece on Queen’s confidence and reinvention. Queen, who got to don an $80,000 Fred Leighton diamond crown for the shoot, spoke on a number of topics including who she considers pop culture royalty… “I’ve been a fan of Solange Knowles from the beginning. The biggest artist in the world is her older sister, yet she never relied on that.” and her keys to a magical life. I used to get caught up in comparing myself, especially in terms of body type, but I realized that often the people I envied were missing important things that I had in abundance…It’s great to have plans and a vision for your life, but it’s more important to be open to the unexpected. Things got especially interesting however when Tracee asked her about her toughest career decision. According to Queen, it was the decision to play Cleo in “Set It Off” because of the stigmas attached to gay characters in the African-American community. “When I got the role of amateur bank robber Cleo Sims in Set It Off, I sat down with my younger siblings and told them, ‘Listen, I’m playing a gay character. Your classmates might tease you or say negative things about it. But I’m doing it because I believe I can bring positive attention to the gay African-American community, and I believe that I can do a great job as an actor.’” So it was hard for her to play Cleo because of her family, not because of the role itself. Makes sense. Kudos to her for her honesty. What do YOU think about Cleo being the toughest career decision for Queen Latifah??? WENN

Easy D: Donald Trump Tweets Bizarre Phrase, Twitter Has Field Day

Social media can be a cruel mistress. The same sites that create kings (or presidents, as the case may be) can tear them down in an instant (or at least let people make fun of them when they say something dumb). As you may have heard, former Celebrity Apprentice host Donald Trump enjoys posting the occasional tweet, and these days he focuses primarily on defending his controversial Muslim ban . (And occasionally slamming Nordstrom for no longer partnering with his daughter, because beefing with a retail chain is totes presidential.) We can only assume President Bannon left Donnie unattended for a few minutes today, because he sent out a bizarre tweet incorporating the phrase “EASY D!” As you can imagine, Twitter had a field day. Take a look: 1. EASY D! The President of the United States tweeted this today. He was promptly and justly roasted for it. 2. Easy D, Defined One of the many possible definitions of the phrase “Easy D.” 3. In Search of Easy D Tomi might be the only person on the Internet more thin-skinned than the Donald. So naturally, she frequently gets the meme treatment. 4. Eazy D Most folks went the dick joke route, but some pointed out that Donnie’s phrase brings to mind a founding member of NWA. 5. Straight Outta Trump Tower Was the president paying tribute to Eazy-E? Only Donnie knows for sure. 6. Donnie and the D Just when you thought this photo couldn’t get any more disturbing… View Slideshow

George H.W. Bush Gets HUGE Ovation For Super Bowl Coin Toss

During his ill-fated run for the presidency, Jeb Bush referred to his father, former President George H.W. Bush, as the greatest man alive. The 2016 election obviously didn't turn out the way his family hoped, but judging by the reaction his old man got at Super Bowl LI? Jeb! hit the nail on the head with that statement. George Bush served one term as president from 1989-1993 before being replaced by Bill Clinton, who defeated him in his bid for reelection. The father of Clinton's successor, George W., the elder Bush has become an even more respected statesman in the two decades since. He and former First Lady Barbara Bush received a massive ovation as they oversaw the coin toss at the big game on Sunday night. It marked the first public event since the couple – based in Houston, the host of the Super Bowl – was hospitalized within days of each other.  George went home from the hospital last week after being treated for pneumonia. He had been at Houston Methodist Hospital since January 15. After experiencing shortness of breath, he was later admitted to the ICU to address an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia. Bush’s wife was admitted to the same hospital on January 18 as a “precaution.” Her doctors later said she was suffering from bronchitis. The hospitalizations forced the duo to miss President Trump’s inauguration on January 20, though they wished him the very best. Last night, the entire nation saluted the very best. The 41st President of the United States was taken to midfield for the coin toss in a wheelchair while his wife rode alongside in a golf cart.  Bush is 92. Barbara, 91, married him 71 (!) years ago. The Bushes were greeted with a well-deserved ovation so loud, the game's referee struggled to be heard during the opening ceremony. The winner of the coin toss? America. And Atlanta, who went on to lose another coin toss, and the game in overtime, three hours later. Watch George H.W. Bush do the honors below!

Bans A Make ‘Em Mad: Federal Judge In Seattle Shuts Down Trump’s Travel Ban Temporarily

Federal Judge Files Lawsuit Against Trump’s Travel Ban The people of the United States aren’t here for burnt sienna POTUS’ travel ban on predominantly Muslim countries. The outrage is so vitriolic that a federal judge in Seattle gave a Dikembe Mutombo finger to the whole thing and Donald is PISSED! According to NYDailyNews , a lawsuit has been filed against Trump’s executive order and is ready to fight it all the way to the Supreme Court: “The law is a powerful thing — it has the ability to hold everybody accountable to it, and that includes the President of the United States,” State Attorney General Bob Ferguson said at a press conference after the Friday evening ruling. Washington is the first state to file suit against the order (New York has joined the suit) but several other judges in both Boston and Virginia have also issued restraining order barring deportation of people affect by the ban. The order, signed off by United States District Judge James Robart, argues Trump’s executive action “adversely” affects “areas of employment, education, business, family relations and freedom to travel.” Reversing the action, the suit concluded, is thereby in the public interest. Trump’s resident do-boy boot-licker, Sean Spicer, says the suit is “outrageous” and issued a brown-nosing statement: “The President’s order is intended to protect the homeland, and he has the constitutional authority and responsibility to protect the American people,” Spicer said in a Friday night statement. Clap For Him: Coach Gregg Popovich Says You’re Damned Right We Still NEED To Talk About Race

NBA Coach Popovich Says What Blacks Have Experienced Is ‘Our National Sin’ As disappointed as we are in the terrible choice of words our nation’s President used Wednesday to commemorate Black History Month we are incredibly proud to see that there are white people eloquent and intelligent enough to address the reality of race in America. Listen: I asked Gregg Popovich what #blackhistorymonth means to him, and once again, he spoke #Spurs #NBA https://t.co/gH9urn2hYU — Jabari Young (@JabariJYoung) February 3, 2017 San Antonio Express reporter Jabari Young spoke with the Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich about what Black History Month means to him and boy do we agree with what he had to say! Via ESPN: “Well, it’s a remembrance, and a bit of a celebration in some ways. It sounds odd because we’re not there yet, but it’s always important to remember what has passed and what is being experienced now by the black population. It’s a celebration of some of the good things that have happened, and a reminder that there’s a lot more work to do. But more than anything, I think if people take the time to think about it, I think it is our national sin. OUR NATIONAL SIN. A country whose material wealth was born out of slave labor — people stolen from their native lands, taken to a strange place, separated from their families, treated less than human. We can’t agree more. Can you. Pop continues by challenging people who feel it’s divisive to even discuss race: It always intrigues me when people come out with, ‘I’m tired of talking about that or do we have to talk about race again?’ And the answer is you’re damned right we do. Because it’s always there, and it’s systemic in the sense that when you talk about opportunity it’s not about ‘Well, if you lace up your shoes and you work hard, then you can have the American dream.’ That’s a bunch of hogwash. Hogwash is a good way to put it. Especially when you have people like Ben Carson and Bill Cosby who seem to believe that everyone can achieve anything despite the challenges put in front of them. Pop knows better. Pop knows all about white privilege and isn’t afraid to talk about it: If you were born white, you automatically have a monstrous advantage educationally, economically, culturally in this society and all the systemic roadblocks that exist, whether it’s in a judicial sense, a neighborhood sense with laws, zoning, education, we have huge problems in that regard that are very complicated, but take leadership, time, and real concern to try to solve. It’s a tough one because people don’t really want to face it. One of the best parts of Pop’s commentary is when he calls out Trump for all his lies and disparaging comments about President Obama and how much his rhetoric is responsible for perpetuating racism in this country: And it’s in our national discourse. We have a president of the United States who spent four or five years disparaging and trying to illegitimatize our president. And we know that was a big fake. But still, [he] felt for some reason it had to be done. I can still remember a paraphrase close to a quote “investigators were sent to Hawaii and you cannot believe what they found.” Well, that was a lie. So if it’s being discussed and perpetrated at that level, you’ve got a national problem. I think that’s enough.” Seriously… He touched nearly every aspect of the conversation about race in this nation that we ALL need to be having on a regular basis. What was your favorite thing about what Popovich said?

Yvonne Orji To Star In Commercial On The Evolution Of Black Beauty In Hollywood

Yvonne Orji has quickly become one of our favorite funny girls as Issa’s BFF on Insecure. After an overwhelmingly positive reception to season 1 of the HBO series, we had a feeling we’d be seeing a lot more of Yvonne, but we had no idea how soon. On February 11, she’s set to star in her own commercial on the evolution of beauty in Black Hollywood. The ad spot is the result of a collaboration between P&G’s My Black is Beautiful Initiative and the Image Awards to showcase black beauty in its various forms. In the commercial, the Nigerian-American actress, who’s also an Image Award nominee, will share her perspective on the evolution of Black beauty in Hollywood while embodying that very evolution herself with her chocolate skin, textured ‘fro, full lips, and contagious smile. Check out behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot and be sure to tune in to the NAACP Image Awards Saturday, February 11 on TV One. Red carpet starts at 7:30. [ madamenoire ] No Work, No School, No Spending: National Strike Against Trump Slated For February 17 Protests continue to pop up at various locations around the country in response to President Donald Trump’s Muslim travel ban, but now citizens around the United States are attempting to organize a national strike in which no one would go to work, school, or spend money on February 17 in a unified stance against our Commander-in-Chief. According to Cosmo, activists got the idea from Francine Prose, an American Writer who, in a column for The Guardian Monday, said: “Forget protest. Trump’s actions warrant a general national strike.” “So what can we do to protest our current government’s callousness about our environment and our health, its rampant greed, its disrespect for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?,” she wrote. “I believe that what we need is a nonviolent national general strike of the kind that has been more common in Europe than here. Let’s designate a day on which no one (that is, anyone who can do so without being fired) goes to work, a day when no one shops or spends money, a day on which we truly make our economic and political power felt, a day when we make it clear: how many of us there are, how strong and committed we are, how much we can accomplish.” [ madamenoire ] Did Shaq Consider Blessing Charles Barkley With A Fade On TV? The attention to the drama between LeBron James and Charles Barkley is slowly but surely petering out, but it’s making for some interesting TV. When discussing the matter on TNT Inside The NBA, Shaq told Chuck he would have stepped to him with the hands if he told him, like he told King James, he didn’t want to “compete.” Shaq made the point that it was the personal nature of Barkley’s critique that set LeBron James off. “When you said that man doesn’t want to compete, that’s what ticked him off. And I woulda did the same thing,” Shaq told Barkley. “I woulda came right back at your rack. I woulda came up here and punched you in your face. That’s what I woulda did.” To this, Chuck said, “Well first of all you’re not a good fighter…” There was a slight chuckle heard, then crickets. Bruh…look at Shaq’s face. Specifically, his eyes. It’s like he was measuring out how long it would take him to get to the other side of the table and mete out swift justice. Got Kleenex? This Story Of A Convict Who Had His Sentence Commuted By Obama This Week Is A Doozy

How Obama Helped This Florida Felon From Being Condemned To Die In Jail Proud to make this one of my final actions as President. America is a nation of second chances, and 1,715 people deserved that shot. https://t.co/4hPxG7hqHL — President Obama (@POTUS44) January 19, 2017 President Obama’s last day in office was an important one for some 300 or so people, who all now have an opportunity to live outside prison walls. One of those people was Trenton Copeland, who penned a letter to REVOLT in October, detailing how he was sentenced six years ago to die in prison for a non-violent offense: I am Trenton Copeland. I am 33 years old and serving a life sentence in federal prison for a nonviolent drug offense. With no parole in the federal system, I have been fundamentally condemned to die in prison. Though it’s a memory I do not enjoy revisiting, I will never forget the day I was sentenced. I was 27 years old and to hear the judge tell me I was being committed to the custody of the Bureau of Prisons for the rest of my life was unreal. The life sentence I received for a nonviolent drug offense screamed that I was beyond redemption and unfit to breathe air as a free man ever again. Words cannot even begin to touch the feelings I had. I was only 27. Locked up for the rest of my life? I couldn’t really process it. And I still can’t, to be honest. The letter detailed how Copeland had turned his sentence into an opportunity to better himself, he accepted full responsibility for his fate, admitting his actions put him behind bars (charged with conspiring to deal cocaine, Copeland received a life sentence because he had two prior convictions for marijuana and cocaine possession). Since being sentenced he had worked to get his GED and had dreams of becoming a youth counselor, helping prevent others from suffering his same fate. He closed by saying without receiving clemency from Obama or major changes to the criminal justice system he would die behind bars. It’s no secret that Congress has been unresponsive to all of Obama’s pleas to reduce mandatory minimums for nonviolent offenders. In eight years, the former President has had to take matters into his own hands and grant commutations at his own discretion. The Washington Post has picked up where Revolt left off — detailing the turmoil Copeland and his family have experienced in the months since his open letter. A week after Copeland’s essay published, Obama commuted the sentences of nearly 100 prisoners. Copeland’s name was not on the list. Good news came to dozens more federal inmates across the United States that month, bringing Obama’s total number of commutations above 1,000 — more than the previous 11 presidents combined. Copeland didn’t make Obama’s list in October, WaPo reports. But he still had some remaining hope. On Tuesday, in one particularly dramatic, last-minute clemency action, Obama pardoned 64 people and commuted the sentences of 209 others, including Chelsea Manning, the Army private convicted of stealing secret diplomatic and military documents and giving them to WikiLeaks. The president also granted a commutation Tuesday to Oscar López Rivera, a Puerto Rican independence activist who was a member of the Armed Forces of National Liberation, a terrorist organization that killed and wounded people in the 1970s and 1980s with bomb attacks. In addition, Obama pardoned more than five dozen people, including baseball great Willie McCovey and retired Marine Gen. James E. Cartwright. Copeland was not on Tuesday’s White House list. The WaPo account of Copeland’s wait is painfully suspenseful, as the last days of Obama’s White House are coming to a close, he begins to fear for the worst. But then… On the last full day of Obama’s presidency, Annie Fray sat at her desk in a Pensacola marketing office. At five minutes to noon, her phone rang. It was Copeland’s lawyer. The president had released his last list. “I shouted so loud my head started hurting,” Fray said. Then she finished her shift and called her son, who will now be free before he turns 40, with half his life to go. Crazy right? To be able to put a face to these disastrous drug sentencing laws makes such a huge difference. Sadly, we are doubtful that the incoming administration give’s AF about all the other Trent Copelands still behind bars. Photo Courtesy Brittany Byrd
