Colin Kaepernick Sits During National Anthem, Defends Decision Like THIS

Colin Kaepernick is not a very good NFL quarterback any longer. He was benched last year by the San Francisco 49ers in favor or Blaine Gabbert. That says it all. This statement really isn’t up for debate. But the 28-year old has stirred a significant national debate after he refused on Friday night to stand during the pre-game playing of the Star-Spangled Banner. The controversial incident took place prior to a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. Here is a look at Kaepernick on the bench while his country was being honored He’s sitting underneath that giant arrow: What prompted Kaepernick to make this decision? He says it was a matter of conscience, of doing something that would call attention to the plight of African-Americans. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told NFL Media. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. “There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” Kaepernick did not get into specifics, but he is most likely talking about the rash of African-American deaths at the hands of police officers over the past several months. It’s a topic many professional athletes are starting to raise, with Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James opening this year’s ESPY Awards by making a plea for racial harmony. For many, these deadly and dangerous issues culminated in June and July with the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile at the hands of police officers. Both black men lost their lives in confrontations with the police, seemingly in needless, irresponsible fashion. These deaths were followed by the killing of five cops in Dallas by a deranged sniper. The 49ers, meanwhile, issued a statement about Kaepernick’s stance. It reads as follows: “The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony. It is an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as its citizens. “In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose and participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem.” And Niners Head Coach Chip Kelly told reporters on Saturday that Kaepernick’s choice not to stand during the national anthem is “his right as a citizen” and said “it’s not my right to tell him not to do something.” The move has created quite a bit of controversy. Many appreciate Kaepernick calling attention to a pressing national topic such as this. Aren’t we always asking athletes to use their platforms for something bigger than sports? Didn’t we just celebrate the life of Muhammed Ali? Possibly the most revered and respected athlete of all-time, Ali refused to be drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He basically spat on his country at the time for its racist tendencies and misguided international policies. Critics of Kaepernick, however, are saying such asinine things as college basketball analyst Doug Gottlieb. He Tweeted the following in response to this controversy: First, the entire point here is that Kaepernick is thinking above and beyond himself. Shouldn’t he be applauded, not criticized, for putting societal problems ahead of his paycheck? What Gottlieb (and others who have written similar things such as this) are essentially saying is that a black man should stay quiet because a very rich white man is paying him a lot of money to do his job… which, in the end, is making that rich white man a lot more money. We have no doubt Kaepernick is grateful for his situation and well aware that America is the best country on Earth. We also hope he’s doing a lot more about the racial strife in this country that just sitting down during the national anthem. But are people really saying that it’s more patriotic to simply stand up during the playing of a song than to make a gesture that aims to help bring about equality? Because that belief is just ridiculous.

#PrayForItaly: At Least 73 People Killed After 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Destroys Entire Central Italian Town

Earthquake Rips Through Italy, Killing At Least 73 People Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of central Italy today after a massive earthquake caused major damage across several towns and the death toll continues to rise. According to NY Daily News reports : At least 73 people were killed early Wednesday when a 6.2-magnitude earthquake rippled through central Italy, waking residents as it rumbled to Rome. Entire blocks of Amatrice were destroyed after the first earthquake struck around 3:30 a.m. local time in the mountainous provinces of Umbria and Perugia. Powerful aftershocks followed. “The town isn’t here anymore,” Amatrice Mayor Sergio Pirozzi told state-run RAI radio. The death toll rose at daybreak when emergency crews rushed to find survivors in the hard-hit towns of Amatrice, Pescara del Tronto and Accumoli, digging into leveled buildings with shovels, bulldozers and their bare hands. Landslides tore through Pescara del Tronto and Arquata del Tronto, quiet villages separated by only two miles built into the lush hillsides of Marche. At least five people — including a family of four — died when a building in the small town of Accumoli collapsed. “Now that daylight has come, we see that the situation is even more dreadful than we feared, with buildings collapsed, people trapped under the rubble and no sound of life,” Accumoli Mayor Stefano Petrucci told Reuters. This is just terrible. #Terremoto Pescara del Tronto. Il paese è raso al suolo. Macerie e soccorsi. Video @NicoleRamadori pic.twitter.com/TTFeslcZ1H — Rai Radio1 (@Radio1Rai) August 24, 2016 The initial tremor was followed by at least seven major aftershocks focused around Norcia, a town 70 miles northeast of Rome, where startled residents in the Italian capital reported swaying homes. The European Mediterranean Seismological Center recorded the first earthquake at 6.1-magnitude while the United States Geological Service recorded 6.2-magnitude. Search and rescue crews navigated through debris-clogged roads to reach razed buildings in Amatrice, where Pirozzi said he could hear “voices under the rubble.” The earthquake knocked down power for more than 2,700 residents in the town and brought stone buildings tumbling to the ground near the city’s center. As news of the devastation reached the Vatican, Pope Francis skipped a catechism lesson and led pilgrims at St. Peter’s Square in prayer for victims. The USGS measured the first aftershock as a 4.6-magnitude near Amatrice and at least four more were recorded near Maltignano and Norcia ranging from 4.0 to 5.5. The Italian earthquake institute documented at least 60 aftershocks in the four hours following the initial quake. We hope that they are able to rescue all the remaining survivors and there are no further deaths reported. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected. APImages/Reuters Continue reading

Ryan Lochte, 3 Olympians Robbed at Gunpoint in Rio

Ryan Lochte has confirmed that he and three other members of the United States Swim Team were robbed this morning in Rio de Janeiro. The four swimmers – a group that also included Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen – were in a taxi headed for the Olympic Village when the incident occurred, according the the U.S. Olympic Committee. Patrick Sandusky, a spokesman for the organization, explained what happened via the following statement: “According to four members of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team, they left France House early Sunday morning in a taxi headed for the Olympic Village. “Their taxi was stopped by individuals posing as armed police officers who demanded the athletes’ money and other personal belongings.” Concluded Sandusky: “All four athletes are safe and cooperating with authorities.” Lochte’s mother, Ileana Lochte, also spoke to USA Today of the incident. “I think they’re all shaken up. There were a few of them,” she told the newspaper. “No, they were just, they just took their wallets and basically that was it.” A 12-time Olympic medalist, Lochte won one gold medal during the Rio Games. He wrapped up his 2016 Olympic experience on Thursday night. Lochte himself, meanwhile, described the robbery to NBC on Sunday afternoon. “We got pulled over, in the taxi, and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge, no lights, no nothing just a police badge and they pulled us over. “They pulled out their guns, they told the other swimmers to get down on the ground – they got down on the ground. “I refused, I was like we didn’t do anything wrong, so – I’m not getting down on the ground. “And then the guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and he said, ‘Get down,’ and I put my hands up, I was like ‘whatever.’ “He took our money, he took my wallet – he left my cell phone, he left my credentials.” Damn. Scary stuff. Police officials have told NBC News they weren’t contacted about the incident, but they are available to help the athletes if necessary. When news of the robbery first hit, an IOC spokesperson denied that it took place. This spokesperson has since acknowledged that it took place, claiming he didn’t have pertinent information upon first making the denial. View Slideshow: 19 Scandalous Sports Stories In a recent interview with E! News, the 32-year-old said he needed a break from swimming. He said he was unsure if he would complete four years from now in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. “Going in day in and day out just beating up your body, it takes a toll. Being at the age I am now, it’s definitely time that I need a break, but I can’t say it’s over,” he said. Taking advantage of his fame after the 2012 Olympics Games in London, Lochte signed on for  What Would Ryan Lochte Do? . This E! reality series, which chronicled life for Ryan Lochte as the single and somewhat goofy Ryan Lochte, lasted just one season. We wish Lochte well.

Egor Tarabasov: Threatened by Michael Lohan!

Michael Lohan is standing up for his daughter. The way only Michael Lohan can. Over the weekend, Lohan engaged in a very public feud and fight with fiance Egor Tarabasov. It started with a stream of angry social media messages in which the often-troubled actress alleged that Tarabasov was cheating on her, implying at the time that she was pregnant . “I guess I was the same at 23…” Lohan wrote of her younger man at one point, adding: “Sh-tty time-it changes at 26/27 @e2505t thanks for not coming home tonight. Fame changes people.” She also Tweeted: “Wow thanks #fiance with Russian hooker @dasha_pa5h.” Things quickly escalated beyond a number of accusatory Tweets, however. On Saturday morning, neighbors of Lohan and Tarabasov were reportedly woken up by Lohan yelling from her balcony that Tarabasov was strangling her and attempting to murder her . The Sun even obtained a video that features a fiery exchange between Lohan and Tarabasov. It was filmed by a witness on the scene and it depicted Lohan on her balcony, screaming to anyone within earshot. “He tried to kill me,” Lohan says in the footage, which also featured Tarabasov trying to reason with his girlfriend and her responding as follows: “Do it. I dare you again. You’re f-cking crazy. You sick f-ck. You need help. It’s my house get out of my house.” Tough times for the couple, clearly. A police spokeswoman later confirmed that authorities were called to the residence after hearing reports of “a woman in distress.” No arrests were made, however. Fast forward to this week, meanwhile, and TMZ has shared text messages sent by Michael Lohan to Egor Tarabasov . They were supposedly written on Saturday night, hours after the aforementioned incident, and they included Lindsay’s father issuing many threats to her fiance. “You threaten my daughter, touch her or if anything happens to her and you will have no where to hide mother ducked like weasel,” Michael writes at one point. It seems pretty clear that Lindsay told her dad about what happened, prompting this barrage of texts. Michael added such scathing, typo-filled words as: VOME Here And Face ME like a man and bring your daddy and mommy. Return her jewelry you broke phoney or I’ll take it out of your ass. I WILL find you. While the relationship between Michael Lohan and Lindsay Lohan has been very strained at times, father and daughter have been on solid terms for awhile now. In early July, Michael Tweeted at his famous child, writing: “You couldn’t possibly love you more than I love YOU!!! You look FANTASTIC.” He also wished a “Happy and BLESSED 30th Birthday to my remarkable daughter” on July 2. On Monday morning, Lindsay flew back to the United States from London… without Tarabasov. She then asked for the public to butt out of her personal affairs , despite Lohan being the one who made these personal affairs very public on social media. “I would appreciate if these speculations regarding my personal life would respectfully come to a halt,” Lohan wrote on Instagram, adding: “Unfortunately, a private matter has become more public than I can control and I would be extremely grateful if my fiancé and myself could discuss our personal matters on our own. “There are more important things going on in the world than our relationship. Please leave us be to solve our personal matters.” View Slideshow: Michael Lohan: Breakin’ the Law!

Mischa Barton Apologizes for Wildly Inappropriate Instagram Post

Mischa Barton is not perfect, people. Anyone who watched her performance as Marissa Cooper on The OC is well aware of this fact. But the actress (former actress?) has taken to Instagram in order to drive this point home in the form of an apology. Barton came under major fire this week when she addressed the sad situation of Alton Sterling being shot dead by police in Louisiana. The tragic incident took place on Tuesday. Based on the video (below), it certainly appears as if Sterling had already been detained by officers and placed on the ground at the time these cops opened fire, ending his life on the spot. Take a look at the disturbing footage for yourself: Alton Sterling: New Video Emerges of Deadly Louisiana Shooting In response to the seemingly senseless death, Barton wrote the following on her social media account: I’m truly heart broken to watch videos like the #altonsterling execution. This may have been going on forever in the United States but thank god the pigs get caught on camera now. Its unthinkable and an embarrassment to America. The country I was brought up in. Somebody make change. We need gun control and unity. And a real President so think about that when this election is around the corner. The world is a precarious place right now.#stop #reflect and #act appropriately. It’s hard to take issue with any of these words, right? So, what was the problem with Barton’s post? She included the following photo along with it: Somehow, it did not occur to Barton that an image of her relaxing in a bikini on board a yacht might not be the most appropriate setting in which one ought to touch on the topic of racial injustice. After deleting the photo, yet still receiving a great deal of backlash, Barton shared the following Mea Culpa on her Instagram account today: “I’m human, I’m not perfect, and I’m sorry if my Instagram post went out of context. I didn’t mean to offend anyone.” We can’t say we’re big fans of the I’m not perfect defense, but whatever. It’s better than no apology at all, right? In the wake of Sterling’s death, along with subsequent shooting of  Philando Castile , many stars have sent messages of pain, anger and hope on social media. HERE IS WHAT BEYONCE SAID . HERE IS WHAT TYGA WROTE . HERE IS A LOOK AT DRAKE’S MESSAGE . And here’s a rundown of those who have been outspoken on the topic of inequality in America: View Slideshow: 18 Celebrities Who Think #BlackLivesMatter
