Black Pastors Launch Petition To Impeach Eric Holder Over Gay Marriage Support Attorney General Eric Holder is the latest in the Obama cabinet to face backlash for not pushing states to enforce laws banning same-sex marriage. via CBS Local A coalition of African-American civil rights leaders and pastors announced a campaign to gather 1 million signatures to impeach Attorney General Eric Holder for attempting to undermine states’ authority to “coerce states to fall in line with same-sex marriage.” Speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, the Coalition of African-American Pastors (CAAP) is calling for Holder’s impeachment for “attempting to impose ‘same-sex marriage’ throughout the nation despite federal law, rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court, and state constitutional amendments to the contrary,” reads the online petition. “What we have in Attorney General Holder is a man so political in his zeal to redefine marriage that he is willing to run roughshod over the rulings of the Supreme Court, binging federal law, and the United States Constitution along with the constitutions of a majority of states,” the Rev. Bill Owens, founder and president of CAAP, said in a statement. This comes as Holder announced on Tuesday that state attorney generals are not obligated to defend laws in their states that ban same-sex marriage if they do not believe in such legislation. A million signatures is a pretty tall order and given that the country is all but divided on this debate, we’d be surprised if they reached their goal.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will face the death penalty for his role in the Boston Marathon bombing if the U.S. has its way, Attorney General Eric Holder saod today. He was arrested for the blasts last April that killed three people, injured more than 260 others, and sent a wave of shock and fear through Massachusetts. Prosecutors notified a federal judge in Boston today of the decision. Death Penalty For Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Sought “After consideration of the relevant facts, the applicable regulations and the submissions made by the defendant’s counsel,” Holder said in a statement . “I have determined that the United States will seek the death penalty in this matter. The nature of the conduct at issue and the resultant harm compel this decision.” With the authorization, the U.S. attorney’s office can move forward in requesting a trial date. The death penalty can also now be a factor in any plea negotiations. Tsarnaev, 20, faces 30 federal charges for setting off the April 15 bombs that plunged the region into terror for five days, until his arrest in Watertown, Mass. His older brother and alleged accomplice, Tamerlan, 26, was killed in a firefight with police the night before Dzhokhar was caught in a massive manhunt . Krystle Campbell, 29, Lingzi Lu, 23, and Martin Richard, 8, were killed at the site of the marathon bombing; incredibly, the toll was not much higher. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev also faces state charges in the fatal shooting of MIT Police Officer Sean Collier, who authorities say he murdered as he tried to flee the area. Prosecutors said they would seek the death penalty for 16 of the charges Tsarnaev faces, and they would prove the following factors, as required by law: That the killings and injuries were intentional That Tsarnaev willingly took part in the acts that resulted in death That he knew they could end in death The prosecutors also cited other factors that would allow for the death penalty: That death occurred during the commission of another crime That the crime itself created a grave risk of death That there was planning involved That there were multiple killings and vulnerable victims That there was a “heinous, cruel and depraved manner of committing the offense” Time will tell what sentence he actually receives, and how the trial process will play out, but at least on paper, he certainly checks all the boxes.
Justin Bieber’s arrest record has officially gone international. The singer turned himself in Canadian police last night and now faces criminal assault charges stemming from a night out in late December. Justin Bieber Arrested in Canada According to a press release from the Toronto Police Service, a limousine picked up Bieber’s party around 3 a.m. on December 30, following a Toronto Maple Leafs game and a few hours inside a club. An “altercation” then “occurred between one of the passengers and the driver,” with authorities saying “a man struck the limousine driver on the back of the head several times.” The driver pulled over, called the police and the alleged culprit “left the scene” before cops arrived. Witnesses have come forward in the past few days and said Bieber was the person who assaulted the driver. 84-Year-Old Man Brutally Beaten By Police For Jaywalking Police brutality has been a long-running problem in the United States and this latest incident involving an elderly man who was brutally beaten by the NYPD is just as disturbing as the rest. Think Progress An 84-year-old man was left bloodied and hospitalized after an incident with New York police officers — over a stop for jaywalking. Witnesses told the New York Post the police brutally beat him, while New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton contends Kang Wong incurred the injuries from a fall. In response to the death of Sarah Lee, a pedestrian killed earlier that day in the Upper West Side neighborhood, officers were patrolling the area as a safety precaution, writing $250 tickets for pedestrians caught violating the law. After Wong was seen crossing an intersection illegally, an officer made him stand against a nearby wall while writing a ticket. || According to eyewitness Ian King, Wong did not understand the officer due to a language barrier, and attempted to walk away from the scene. The officer tried to pull Wong back to the wall, and “that’s when he began to struggle with the cop,” King explained. Additional cops entered the scene and started beating the elderly man — an attack that “left [Wong] bloody and dazed.” Wong was then placed in handcuffs and escorted to St. Luke’s Hospital, after which he was brought to the 24th Precinct station house. He ultimately needed four staples in his head. On Monday morning, he was issued a desk-appearance ticket after being charged with “resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct,” in addition to jaywalking. His son, a 41-year-old lawyer, claims he was given little information after receiving a phone call from officers inquiring about his father’s medication. Tragic news today out of Venezuela: Monica Spear, a 29-year old wife, mother and former Miss Venezuela, was killed in an attempted robbery last night. According to local police, via Globovision, the ex-beauty pageant winner was in the car with her husband and daughter when their vehicle crashed. Assailants then approached the family as they waited for a tow truck. Mother, father and child locked themselves in their car, but the thieves murdered both Spear and her husband, Thomas Henry Berry via gun shot; their five-year old girl was left with a bullet wound in her leg. The trio had been on vacation and were traveling in a Toyota Corolla toward the city of Valenica when the horrible incident took place. Spear had been living in Miami and had plans to return to The United States this week. Spear won the crown of Miss Venezuela in 2004 and took part in Miss Universe 2005 in Thailand. She had appeared in a number of Venezuelan and Telemundo soap operas since then. Our thoughts go out to Spear and her her husband’s family.
