Damn the ‘Tino’s are selling out. SMH. The Ethnicity vs. Race issue is rearing up again thanks to the latest census data which shows whites are up by 6% thanks to Latinos who identify as such. The white population in the U.S. is growing – thanks to Hispanics. So say the latest census figures, which found a big jump in the number of Hispanics who listed themselves as white on the 2010 census forms. Those forms specifically stated that Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. The result was a sudden six percent increase in white Americans. “It really surprises me, that is a significant shift,” said Claudio Remeseira, a Columbia University professor and editor of “Hispanic New York: A Sourcebook.” “In general, most Latinos tend to think of themselves as white. But the issue of how Latinos identify themselves by race has always been complicated.” For example, most Dominican immigrants – even dark-skinned Dominicans – would say they are white “because they have historically perceived themselves as not black” like their neighbors in Haiti, Remeseira said. In all, the number of people in the “white alone” category jumped by 12.1 million over the last decade to 223.6 million, the census showed. Whites now represent 72% of the U.S. population and account for nearly half of the total population increase since 2000. Take out the Hispanics, however, and whites account for 64% of the population, according to the figures. They were 69% of the population just a decade ago. Hispanics continue to be the nation’s fastest growing group. The percentage that identified themselves as white jumped in the past decade from 48% to 53%. The portion that marked “some other race” dropped from 42% to 37%. Also, for the first time, the largest group of multiracial Americans are like President Obama – half black, half white. “There is no question that racial lines are blurring in the United States, said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution. “Strong gains in interracial marriages and higher mixed-race identification among youth suggest that past racial categories will need to be radically changed or even dispensed with in the next two or three decades.” This race business is so tricky isn’t it? And crazy how the Haiti vs. DR issue immediately comes up. Do you see nothing wrong with Latinos identifying as White, or do you think it’s just plain ol’ denial? Source

Ever heard the saying, “Stay ready, so you don’t have to get ready?” . . . Well, with the ambush of earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis and tornadoes we’ve experienced since the beginning of the year, you should’ve seen enough by now to know how devastating the effects of any disaster – natural or man-made, can be. Since January, FEMA has confirmed over 80 major disaster declarations in the United States alone. Regardless of whether you live in a typical disaster zone or not, the reality is you are now fair game for experiencing one. So, the question is whether you’ll take steps now to safe guard your family in case of emergency or wait until disaster actually strikes. President Obama declared September as National Preparedness Month , appropriately so as the 10th anniversary of 9/11 lingers. In his proclamation, the President encouraged “all Americans to recognize the importance of preparedness and observe this month by working together to enhance our national security, resilience, and readiness.” When preparing for a natural disaster, the necessities that usually come to mind are food, water and shelter. While physical safety is definitely a primary concern, few tend to think of finances as the next major priority. So, in addition to checking out sites like www.ready.gov for physical preparedness, below you’ll find a few tips to get your financial house in order in case of catastrophe. 1. Get it together. The last thing you want to do in the event of an emergency is scurry through papers in your kitchen’s junk drawer. Create a filing system that allows you to get all of your documents together in one, organized place. 2. Take inventory. Maintain an updated inventory of all valuables along with serial numbers, warranty information, photos, and even videos, if possible. Some people walk through their home with a video camera to document everything. Having an inventory is going to save you lots of headaches in the event of a disaster which produces subsequent insurance claims. Remember, however, to keep the list, photos and videos off-site for obvious reasons. READ MORE Is It Time To Start Christmas Shopping? 10 Ways To Avoid Overdraft Fees
Didn’t they have a meeting to deal with the realness of s*** in Yemen like 5 months ago??? Clearly someone missed the memo… In the past three days, pro-regime forces killed more than 70 people, mostly protesters, using anti-aircraft guns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars. At least 23 people were killed in Sanaa on Tuesday as the fighting intensified and spread to sensitive areas of the capital before the cease-fire took hold after nightfall. In one incident, 13 followers of a tribal leader who changed sides and joined the opposition in March were killed when mortar shells fired by pro-government forces rained down on the upscale Hedah area of southern Sanaa, also home to top regime figures. “It’s a war zone,” said Sanaa activist Hakim al-Masmari. “We can’t even sit near windows because we could be killed.” Thousands have been forced to flee Sanaa for the relative safety of rural areas. Scores of pickup trucks and cars loaded with families and their belongings were seen early Tuesday heading out of the city, repeatedly shaken by loud explosions overnight. The United States condemned the violence and called on all parties to exercise restraint. “We urge a prompt, impartial investigation into the events that led to the recent violence,” Victoria Nuland, the State Department’s spokeswoman, said in a statement Tuesday. A negotiated cease-fire Tuesday halted three days of fighting that killed dozens of people, but it will not hold without a quick resolution of the key dispute: Who will lead the nation. A peaceful way out of Yemen’s seven-month crisis may not come easily, if at all, making it more likely to be settled in large-scale and ruinous street battles pitting renegade army soldiers and their allied tribal fighters against U.S.-trained forces loyal to embattled President Ali Abdullah Saleh and led by his son and one-time heir apparent, Ahmed. Already, pro-regime forces reinforced their positions in their strongholds in the south of the capital, apparently in anticipation of renewed fighting. The potential for bloody strife has been shown in Yemen since the uprising against Saleh’s regime began in February, with hundreds of protesters killed and thousands wounded at the hands of security forces. Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Contagion’ follows at #2, with Ryan Gosling vehicle ‘Drive’ at #3. By Ryan J. Downey “Lion King 3-D” Photo: Disney What’s old was new again as Disney’s iconic “The Lion King” became the #1 movie at the box office over the weekend, taking in an estimated $29.3 million with a souped-up 3-D redo of the 1994 original. “Drive,” one of the year’s best-reviewed films, was #3 in its weekend debut, while the poorly reviewed remake of “Straw Dogs” and Sarah Jessica Parker’s even-worse-reviewed “I Don’t Know How She Does It” both flopped in their debuts. Last week’s #1 movie, “Contagion,” dropped to #2 this week. “The Lion King” 3-D re-release earned more than the other three new releases combined. The film’s original-run IMAX re-release (back in 2002) and the past weekend’s numbers pushed “The Lion King” from #25 to #17 on the all-time domestic box-office chart, according to Box Office Mojo . The animated tale, which has also quite successfully been adapted for Broadway, has made $357.8 million in the United States to date. Steven Soderbergh’s ensemble procedural drama “Contagion” made $14.5 million in its second weekend of release, for a total of $44.2 million. “Drive” took in $11 million, but while the film has set Twitter abuzz in critic circles, it remains to be seen how it will continue to play with a broader audience. “This is one of Ryan Gosling’s best performances,” Aisle Seat reported. “The Help” came in at #4 at the box office, adding $6.4 million for a total of $147.3 million. The remake of director Sam Peckinpah’s 1971 thriller “Straw Dogs,” featuring “True Blood” star Alexander Skarsg
