Anderson Cooper Shellacks Texas Birther With Torrent Of Facts

CNN's Anderson Cooper took Texas birther and state Rep. Leo Berman (R) down a whole bunch of pegs last night over Berman's birther bill. “You're basing legislation on stuff that's just rumors and stuff that's been proven to be false,” Cooper told him. Earlier this month, Berman introduced a bill in the Texas House that would “require any candidate for president or vice president of the United States to show his or her birth certificate to the Texas secretary of state,” because, as Berman put it, “we have a president whom the American people don't know whether he was born in Kenya or some other place.” Berman, who has also called President Obama “God's punishment on us today,” went on AC360 to talk about his bill, but ended up fumbling through his notes when Cooper hit him with, you know, facts. One representative exchange came after Berman asked why no one has access to any of the President's school records. “Why don't we know anything about a president who has such a radical agenda?” he said. Cooper asked him: “Have you seen George W. Bush's transcripts from college?” Berman replied: “I can see anything I want from George W. Bush.” “Actually sir, you couldn't,” Cooper fired back. “Under federal law the schools cant release that information.” Berman, unable to respond to this, soon moved on: “Where are the president's passports and his travel records that got him to Pakistan in the early 90s, when no U.S. citizen could get to Pakistan at all?” Cooper replied: “What you just said is factually incorrect,” adding that Obama traveled to Pakistan in 1981 when Americans could still go there. “That's just an internet rumor that you're spreading,” Cooper said. added by: TimALoftis

Irvin Kershner, Director Of ‘The Empire Strikes Back,’ Dies At 87

The filmmaker, who also helmed the Bond flick ‘Never Say Never Again’ and ‘Robocop 2,’ passed away in Los Angeles. By Tom DiChiara Irvin Kershner Photo: Jean-Christophe Verhaegen/ AFP/ Getty Images Irvin Kershner, best known for directing the “Star Wars” sequel “The Empire Strikes Back,” has died at the age of 87. The filmmaker passed away at his Los Angeles home after a long bout with an unspecified illness, his goddaughter Adriana Santini told French news service AFP on Monday. Born in 1923 in Philadelphia, Kershner studied music, painting and photography before turning his focus to filmmaking in the early 1950s. He got his start directing documentaries in Iran, Greece and Turkey for the United States Information Service, then returned to the States to develop the TV series “Confidential File” and “The Rebel.” Kershner made his feature directorial debut with “Stakeout on Dope Street” in 1958 and went on to direct a number of well-known films, including 1960’s “Hoodlum Priest” and 1966’s “A Fine Madness,” starring Sean Connery and Joanne Woodward. In 1980, Kershner directed “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back,” the sequel to George Lucas’s 1977 space-opera hit, arguably the series’ best-loved and most critically acclaimed installment. While “Empire Strikes Back” is certainly the film for which Kershner is most fondly remembered, he’s also known for helming 1983’s unauthorized James Bond film “Never Say Never Again” — which saw Sean Connery return to the role of 007 — and 1990’s “Robocop II.” Kershner did a bit of acting in his day as well. He made his big-screen debut in Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Temptation of Christ” in 1988, and also appeared as a filmmaker in the 1994 Steven Seagal vehicle “On Deadly Ground.” At the time of his death, Kershner was still actively working in photography. The Force was strong with this one.

Leaked Cables Uncloak U.S. Diplomacy

WASHINGTON — A cache of a quarter-million confidential American diplomatic cables, most of them from the past three years, provides an unprecedented look at backroom bargaining by embassies around the world, brutally candid views of foreign leaders and frank assessments of nuclear and terrorist threats. Some of the cables, made available to The New York Times and several other news organizations, were written as recently as late February, revealing the Obama administration’s exchanges over crises and conflicts. The material was originally obtained by WikiLeaks, an organization devoted to revealing secret documents. WikiLeaks intends to make the archive public on its Web site in batches, beginning Sunday. The anticipated disclosure of the cables is already sending shudders through the diplomatic establishment, and could conceivably strain relations with some countries, influencing international affairs in ways that are impossible to predict. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and American ambassadors around the world have been contacting foreign officials in recent days to alert them to the expected disclosures. On Saturday, the State Department’s legal adviser, Harold Hongju Koh, wrote to a lawyer for WikiLeaks informing the organization that the distribution of the cables was illegal and could endanger lives, disrupt military and counterterrorism operations and undermine international cooperation against nuclear proliferation and other threats. The cables, a huge sampling of the daily traffic between the State Department and some 270 embassies and consulates, amount to a secret chronicle of the United States’ relations with the world in an age of war and terrorism. Among their revelations, to be detailed in The Times in coming days:

U.S. Shuts Down Web Sites in Piracy Crackdown

In what appears to be the latest phase of a far-reaching federal crackdown on online piracy of music and movies, the Web addresses of a number of sites that facilitate illegal file-sharing were seized this week by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a division of the Department of Homeland Security. Users of the Web site torrent-finder.com saw this message after the site was seized on Friday. By Friday morning, visiting the addresses of a handful of sites that either hosted unauthorized copies of films and music or allowed users to search for them elsewhere on the Internet produced a notice that said, in part: “This domain name has been seized by ICE — Homeland Security Investigations, pursuant to a seizure warrant issued by a United States District Court.” In taking over the sites’ domain names, or Web addresses, the government effectively redirected any visitors to its own takedown notice. “ICE office of Homeland Security Investigations executed court-ordered seizure warrants against a number of domain names,” said Cori W. Bassett, a spokeswoman for ICE, in a statement. “As this is an ongoing investigation, there are no additional details available at this time.” Among the domains seized were torrent-finder.com and those of three sites that specialized in music: onsmash.com, rapgodfathers.com and dajaz1.com. TorrentFreak, a news blog about BitTorrent — a file-sharing system that has tended to elude the authorities because it is decentralized — said that at least 70 other addresses had been seized, most belonging to sites related to counterfeit clothing, DVDs and other goods. On Friday, torrent users were already discussing new sites that had popped up to serve them. The takedown notices are similar to those that went up on nine sites in June as part of an initiative against Internet counterfeiting and piracy that the agency called Operation in Our Sites. added by: Itsbatman_Durr

USS George Washington aircraft carrier strike group off to the Yellow Sea for naval exercises with South Korean forces.

The Obama administration called on China Wednesday to rein in North Korea after its artillery attack on a South Korean island, as the Pentagon ordered the USS George Washington aircraft carrier strike group to the Yellow Sea for naval exercises with South Korean forces. Search crews on the island located off South Korea's west coast also recovered the charred bodies of two civilians Wednesday. China, which has a defense agreement with communist North Korea, is the key to changing Pyongyang's behavior, said State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley. “We do believe that China has influence with North Korea,” he said. “We don't want to understate or overstate that. It's not that China can dictate a particular action to North Korea. It is that China, together with the United States and other countries, have to send a clear, direct, unified message that it is North Korea that has to change.” At the United Nations, Security Council, members held talks on the attack, but news reports indicated that action on the matter was unlikely. The Security Council took months to condemn North Korea's sinking of a South Korean warship and then did not mention North Korea by name. An unidentified relative of Seo Jeong-woo, a South Korean marine killed on Yeonpyeong Island by North Korea's artillery attack, weeps during a memorial service at a military hospital Wednesday. (Associated Press) At Incheon, South Korea, residents of the bombed island told stories of the midafternoon artillery barrage. “Over my head, a pine tree was broken and burning,” said Ann Ahe-ja, who was among the hundreds of evacuees from Yeonpyeong Island arriving at the port. “So I thought, 'Oh, this is not another exercise. It is a war.' I decided to run. And I did.” In addition to the two civilians, two South Korean marines were killed and 18 wounded in the artillery strike, which destroyed 30 homes. The shelling followed South Korean military exercises involving artillery fire south of the island. Wang Baodong, a Chinese Embassy spokesman in Washington, said all parties in the crisis must “help relax the tension.” http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/nov/24/us-sends-carrier-yellow-sea-exer… added by: im1mjrpain
