There’s Another Senate Seat Open

A week after Election Day, a seat is still open in the United States Senate. It’s in Louisiana, and the winner could make the Senate even more conservative — or give Democrats a symbolically meaningful win. Instead of a standard general election system, Louisiana uses a “blanket primary,” also known as a “jungle primary.” All… Read more »

Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States. Despite months of blatant displays of discrimination and xenophobia  — […]

Jose Fernandez Killed in Boat Accident; Marlins Pitcher Was 24

Tragedy has struck the world of professional sports: Jose Fernandez, one of the best young players in Major League Baseball, was found dead early Sunday morning. He was 24 years old. The U.S. Coast Guard has confirmed Fernandez was one of three people killed in a boat crash off Miami Beach after the vessel he was on crashed into a jetty. In response to the tragedy, the Miami Marlins announced that Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves had been canceled. The team also released the following statement: “The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of José Fernández. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.” Chief Petty Officer Nyxolyno Cangemi told The Associated Press that a Coast Guard patrol boat spotted an overturned boat at approximately 3:30 a.m. on a jetty near Government Cut. The bodies of all three victims were discovered a short while later. Fernandez was on a 32-foot board that had a “severe impact” with the jetty, said Fish and Wildlife spokesman Lorenzo Veloz. Just last week, Fernandez had announced that his girlfriend was pregnant. “All of Baseball is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernández,” Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “He was one of our game’s great young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organization and all of the people he touched in his life.” Fernandez emigrated to the United States from Cuba in 2008, following three failed defection attempts. He eventually settled in Tampa, Florida and became a United States citizen last year. He was the 14th overall draft pick in 2011 by the Marlins, out of Tampa’s Alonso High School. Two years later, Fernandez was named the National League Rookie of the Year. This past year, he was 16-8 with a 2.86 ERA this season, earning his second appearance in the All-Star Game. Major League Baseball Players Associated executive director Tony Clark also released a statement Sunday morning in response to the awful news: “We are devastated by the news that Jose Fernandez has tragically passed. Jose was a remarkable young man and a tremendously gifted athlete, who at just 24, established himself as one of the game’s biggest and brightest stars. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jose’s family, friends, teammates, Miami Marlins organization and legions of fans in the United States and Latin America.” We also send our thoughts and prayers to Fernandez’s friends, family members and loved ones. Kim Kardashian: I May Vote for Donald Trump!

Kim Kardashian made headlines earlier today for brushing aside talk of a feud with Taylor Swift. In an interview with Wonderland Magazine, Swift acted all sweet and innocent and coy and said she never threw any shade in Swift’s direction . It was a pretty absurd declaration, which is why it was the main focus of most celebrity gossip outlets after excepts of the interview went viral. But we admit that we were among the outlets that appears to have buried the lead in this story, because Kim said something even more absurd and noteworthy to the publication: She may vote for Donald Trump in November. For real. For President of the United States. In August of 2015, Kardashin and Kanye West attend a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton at Scooter Braun’s home in Los Angeles. Kim snapped a selfie with the Democratic nominee at the time, Tweeted it to followers and wrote as a caption: “I really loved hearing her speak & hearing her goals for our country! #HillaryForPresident.” Two months before to this meet, greet and promote, Kardashian was asked at a forum in San Francisco about Clinton possibly becoming the first female president of the United States, to which she replied: “I hope so!” But this is what Kim said to Wonderland for its latest cover story: “At first I thought, ‘Oh my god, I’m so Hillary,’ but I had a long political call with Caitlyn [Jenner] last night about why she’s voting Trump. “I’m on the fence.” Is Kim allowed to change her mind? Of course. Just because she was going to vote for Clinton before does not mean she can’t decide that Trump is actually the better candidate. We’re just curious: Which lie or which racist statement by Trump was the deciding factor here? As you might expect, the Internet has not reacted well to Kim’s pro-Trump stance. Or her semi-pro-Trump stance. Whatever you want to call it, the Internet has not reacted well to Kardashian giving any consideration whatsoever to Donald Trump as the most powerful man on the planet. And, as one astute user points out below, the truly troubling thing is this: Kim Kardashian actually does hold sway over millions of people. She gets them to buy her clothing. She gets them to watch Keeping Up with the Kardashians online . She can make or break an entire company with a Tweet. It’s depressing, but true. Fortunately, however, we’d have to imagine (pray?) that most people who can be influenced by Kim Kardashian are under 18 years of age. Would you lose respect for Kardashian is she voted for Trump? Would you lose respect for anyone if he or she voted for Trump? As you can see below, he does have his share of famous supporters out there. Does Kim want to join this company? If You’re A Black Woman Working In Utah Beware

Black women don’t fare well economically nationwide, considering they still earn just .64 cents for every dollar a white man earns. But Utah ranks as one of the worst for Black women. There Black women receive just 60 cents for every dollar earned by white men…. “According to a study by the Washington, D.C.- based National Women’s Law Center, Black women in Utah can expect to lose $950,720 to the wage gap over the course of a 40-year career. It’s the 10th largest gap in the nation,” reported The Salt Lake Tribune. Breaking it down to hard cash, this means on average, a 40-year wage loss would amount to a whopping $877,480 or a loss of $21,937 a year… [ MadameNoire ] Black Women Continue To Face Racism In Catholic Church When Pursuing Religious Vocations This might not be talked about often, but entering the religious arena is a viable profession — for some. According to Shannen Dee Williams, Assistant Professor in the department of history at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Black women face racism when they decide to pursue religious vocations. Women in general are sorely missing from the relational community. In fact, according to a national study done in 2010 by Faith Communities Today, only 12 percent of all congregations in the United States had a female as their senior or sole ordained leader. And according to Professor Williams, the percentage is even lower for Black women, especially in the Catholic faith… [ MadameNoire ] Remy Ma Spits A Hard Freestyle On Tony Touch’s Shade 45 Toca Tuesday Show Remy Ma got bars… With her verses on “All The Way Up” and the remix tearing up speakers across the country and her latest single with Fat Joe “Cookin” heating up, Remy and her better-half, Papoose, stopped by DJ Tony Touch’s Shade 45 radio show Toca Tuesdays and spit a venomous freestyle over Jay-Z’s “Where I’m From” instrumental.
