Robot prototype can find tumours better than surgeons

Robots are continuing to get personal with humans, all in the name of science — a robot prototype has been created by Canadian researchers to detect cancer in people. Developed at the University of Western Ontario, the robot can indentify tumour tissue with 40 per cent more accuracy than human surgeons, and in half the time. Research shows that the prototype can heavily reduce damage done to patients by using tactile sensing instruments in a far more efficient manner than human surgeons (one-third less damage when compared), thus minimizing the force applied to body tissue, when looking for tumours

Scientific experiment suggests that sexual orientation is encoded in our genes

By altering a gene in the brain of a female worm, scientists were able to change its sexual orientation so that it was attracted to other females. Scientists activated the gene that makes male structures develop in the body, but only turned it on in the brain. The result was worms that “look like girls, but act and think like boys,” according to Jamie White, a researcher on the study.

Newly released files contain over 4,000 pages of UFO sightings

An alien with a lemon-shaped head and a jazz-themed encounter with a UFO at the Glastonbury Festival are among hundreds of UFO sightings detailed in the latest batch of documents released Monday by the UK's Ministry of Defence. Fourteen files, containing over 4,000 pages of UFO sightings from 1981 to 1996, have now been placed on Britain's National Archives database and are publicly available online. The sightings range from lights in the sky to close contact with aliens, and the files contain detailed analysis on some of the UK's most popular cases — a number of which remain officially unexplained.

Binge drinking a problem for older adults, too

Binge drinking is usually seen as a problem of college campuses, but many older adults may be overindulging in alcohol as well, a study published Monday suggests. Using data from a government survey of nearly 11,000 Americans age 50 and up, researchers found that 23 percent of men between the ages of 50 and 64 admitted to binge drinking in the past month, as did roughly 9 percent of women. Among adults age 65 and older, more than 14 percent of men and 3 percent of women reported bingeing — defined as having five or more drinks on one occasion, on at least one day in the past month.
