Genes May Affect Weight Gain

View post:

A new study indicates that genes may explain about fifty percent of weight gain that begins in middle age. Researchers studied sets of twins who served in the military during the Vietnam War. Some of the twins were identical and shared the same genes, and the others were non-identical twins. After twenty years of follow-up, the study now shows that genes account for about 1/2 of the weight gain among the men. Environmental factors, such as exercise and diet account for the other 1/2. Researchers say the findings may help explain why some people find it hard to lose weight. I Don’t Have Time To Exercise! Romeis, PhD, professor of health services research at Saint Louis University School of Public Health, in a news release. “You’ve got this genetic thing working against you that helps to explain why you’re so heavy and why you may fail at weight loss programs and diets.” Cancer Patients Must Exercise To Prevent Recurrence In the study, which appeared in a recent issue of the journal Twin Research, researchers studied nearly 8,000 middle-aged, middle-class male twins who enlisted in the U.S. military during the late 1960s.At the time of their enlistment as young men more than 3/4s of them were considered normal weight, 17 percent were overweight, and 2.5 percent were obese or severely obese. Twenty years later, less than half of the men were still considered normal weight. Meanwhile, more than half had become overweight. The study showed that about 50 percent of the weight differences among the men appeared to be caused by genetic factors. Other aspects of their lifestyle and environment accounted for the rest. Although genetics may help to explain why some men gain weight more easily and have a harder time losing it, researchers say it should not stop them from trying to maintain a healthy weight, because weight gain doesn’t just happen overnight.

Watch The Throne ‘Murder To Excellence’ Inspiration Danroy Henry Honored

Friends and family gather in New York for a peaceful demonstration to honor fallen college student. By D.L. Chandler Students in New York’s Grand Central Terminal honor Danroy Henry on Friday Photo: Claire Finnegan Although much of the criticism levied towards Watch The Throne has been focused primarily on the braggadocious rhymes from Kanye West and Jay-Z , the pair tackled serious fare several times throughout the album — most notably on the track “Murder To Excellence” in which Jay-Z dedicated his rhyme to the memory of a college football player on the cusp of his 21st birthday. Danroy Henry, forever immortalized in verse by Jay-Z’s opening line on the track, was a student at Pace University in suburban Westchester County, New York and a member of its football team. During a
celebratory night with friends at a local bar last October after a Pace win, Henry reportedly ran two officers down with his car who then ended up on the hood of his vehicle and began to open fire, killing Henry and injuring two passengers. Further insult to the Henry family came when Pleasantville police officer Aaron Hess was given an officer of the year award. In February, Hess was cleared of any
wrongdoing by grand jury although the Henry family is still pursuing justice in the case. Friends of Danroy — affectionately known as DJ — Henry gathered Friday (August 12) at New York City’s Grand Central station to stage a peaceful gathering in the memory of their fallen friend and also cleverly timed their call against police brutality with the release of Watch The Throne as well. Organized partly by Claire Finnegan, sister to one of DJ’s teammates Patrick, the gathering of friends honoring DJ’s life numbered to about fifty people according to Ms. Finnegan. “DJ was really one of the best guys you’d ever meet. He was a good kid and so upstanding,” shared Ms. Finnegan in a phone interview with MTV. “He was one of those guys who would give you anything he had. He was just that good of a guy.” Ms. Finnegan further shared that their gathering was disrupted by police officers although an off duty cop was said to have shown support to the group’s cause. With golden
balloons adorned with the Jay-Z line “This is to the memory of Danroy Henry” and “Watch The Throne” on the adjacent side, the gatherers all timed the release of the helium filled balloons into the air much to the chagrin of the police officials inside the station. Although the memorial was met with some resistance, Ms. Finnegan vowed that more public demonstrations are to come and informed MTV that Henry’s parents have started the “DJ Dream Fund” inn Henry’s home state of Massachusetts which will strive to provide sports-related resources to children and to remember DJ via his love of athletics. John Legend has been called many things over his career: talented, hard-working, successful. But this is a new one: A New Jersey songwriter named Anthony Stokes claims the musician is a hack. Ashley Finestone: Michael Phelps’ Secret Girlfriend?

Olympic swimming god Michael Phelps has quietly dated a Canadian woman by the name of Ashley Finestone for more than two years, reports say. The 26-year-old has been exchanging calls, texts and visits with the Montreal native, who he spent time with just this past weekend, in fact. “Michael was in Montreal last weekend to compete in the Canada Cup and I saw him walking hand-in-hand with Ashley,” a source told Radar . Finestone, a McGill University graduate, was good luck for Phelps, who brought home gold in the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter butterfly. “Their relationship started a little over two years ago when they met staying at the same hotel in South Beach over New Years,” the insider said. Fortunately for Michael, and somewhat sadly for celebrity gossip sites: “Ashley has always been concerned with showing Michael that she would keep their relationship on the down-low and private first and foremost.” Michael has also been linked to Brittny Gastineau and Carrie Prejean of all people in recent years, along with that Caroline “Caz” Pal girl.

Question Of The Day: Would You Support A Black Republican Presidential Candidate As Much As You Supported Obama??

Businessman Herman Cain is becoming very popular amongst the people, but could he earn YOUR vote? Bolstered by support from his loyal radio talk-show audience and Tea Party backers, businessman Herman Cain has revved up mainstream conservatives, rising recently to third place in a poll of voters in Iowa, the leadoff caucus state. In his pursuit of the Republican presidential nomination, Cain’s views on the economy and his fiery delivery have resonated with some in the GOP. His campaign has also been marked by controversy, including his comment that he would not want a Muslim bent on killing Americans in his administration. Just this week, Cain accused comedian Jon Stewart of disliking him because he is an “American black conservative.” Already losing some of his cachet to Tea Party favorite Michele Bachmann, Cain, the lone African-American GOP candidate, is trying to win over a party that hasn’t had a black nominee. Sidestepping race as an issue in his campaign may have helped him gain momentum in recent weeks, but whether he can turn vigor into votes will depend largely on voters’ ability to look past his skin color and perceive him as a serious candidate. Here is what some people who support Mr. Cain. “He’s fresh, he’s outspoken,” said Debbie Dooley, head of the Georgia Tea Party Patriots. “If they hear him speak, he usually wins them over. With him, what you see is what you get. People like that.” “He doesn’t believe in the whole business of race being a defining factor of anything in this country,” said William Boone, a political science professor at Clark Atlanta University, which is predominantly black. “He says, ‘If you work hard, you will make it. Look at me.’ “There’s a buzz on the street among activists. People like him; they want to know more about him. That’s sort of living the dream as far as a presidential candidate goes. He’s getting the kind of reaction every candidate imagines.” This all sounds like glowing praise, but the question still remains can he get people to believe in him how they believe in Barack Obama, and show up at the polls on voting day. How do you feel about a black republican candidate? Source
