But everybody’s doing it! That excuse may not have gotten you out of hot water with your parents, but it seems to hold some sway with Time magazine, at least when it comes to ethically-challenged former House Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.). Staffer Michael Scherer apparently drew the short straw for the August 13 assignment , in which he focused on just one of the numerous allegations of impropriety against Rangel: that he misused his congressional office to solicit contributions to the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service. Of course, there are other serious charges against Rangel — who used to chair the House committee responsible for federal tax policy — namely that he avoided paying taxes on property that he owns. From the July 29 Washington Times: The charges, detailed in a 40-page “Statement of Alleged Violation,” break down into four categories: that he solicited money for the Rangel Center from those doing business before his committee; that he made errors and omissions on his financial disclosure forms; that he was given use of a rent-subsidized apartment for an office; and that he failed to report rental income and and pay federal taxes on it. Curiously, Scherer failed to mention those three other categories in his blog post.

On the heels of a new College Board report that the United States is struggling to compete with other countries when it comes to college completion rates, Vanity Fair’s resident straight talker, Henry Rollins, has figured out the problem. The education system isn’t struggling because of possible factors contained within the report, such as: Inadequate funding of preschool programs Poor college counseling programs for middle and high school aged children High school dropout rates A lack of international standardization for curriculum Skyrocketing costs of education No, Henry has stumbled onto the real, super secret reason why students are failing to finish their college work: Sarah Palin and George Bush . To be accurate, it’s not so much the direct fault of Palin and Bush – rather, it is those of you who support them, their stupid comments, and their intellectually uninterested ways. Their fans see them as real people and because of that, they feel comfort in an unchallenging environment. Rollins explains why ‘America doesn’t seem to value a college education the way it used to’: “…in America the educated person is often seen as some sissified, fragile know-it-all who looks down at the common man. Every time Sarah Palin says something stupid, she gets more fans. To them, she is “real.” It’s the same reason why so many Americans loved George Bush. They saw themselves in this intellectually uninterested man and found comfort in such an unchallenging environment.” Worse, Rollins somehow manages to immediately transition into a Hitler reference. In explaining that Americans seem to express disdain for the educated person (via leaders such as Palin and Bush), he then goes on to say: “What leaders had contempt for educated people? Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, to name a few.” And “Funny how the very idea of increased education opportunities threatens some Americans. They will tell you that education is stupid.” And “America’s abysmal report card, appalling treatment of teachers, and hostile contempt for its young people should be our national shame, the sub-literate albatross swinging from our collective neck. America No. 1? Not even close.” Now, before you go accusing Mr. Rollins of being a liar, a liar, a liar, a liar , it is important to note that Henry speaks from experience, having come from a very thorough, college-educated background himself. However, in this case anyway, it is apparent that Palin and Bush weren’t the cause of at least one American quitting college. Rollins dropped out of American University following a very brief stint (one semester) in the late ‘70’s. Citing reasons such as boredom, and the fact that his classmates would rather study beer and bongs than read books, Rollins instead pursued his musical career. Seems he is partially correct. There are some individuals out there who look at college experience with contempt, threatened by education because it is, in a word, stupid. By way of contrast, Sarah Palin earned a Bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Idaho. Oh, and that intellectually uninterested guy we mentioned earlier? He earned a history degree from Yale University in 1968, and is the only President to have ever earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Harvard Business School. Make no mistake, Henry Rollins is an incredibly intelligent, well-read, real-world educated person, and Vanity Fair is wise in giving him an outlet. But traipsing into the world of liberal lunacy (Palin and Bush Derangement Syndrome) clouds any argument one can make. In this case, Rollins opines that education suffers because of uneducated people who have a better education than himself. The result is intellectually dishonest and hypocritical. Augusta State University officials said it's not a graduate student's religious beliefs, but her refusal to work toward being able to counsel homosexual clients that is threatening her standing in the school's counseling program, according to court documents filed Monday. The filing states that Jennifer Keeton must demonstrate her ability to counsel all clients, including the homosexual and transgender population, in order to graduate. The response is the school's first legal answer since Keeton filed a lawsuit July 21 alleging that she was facing expulsion from the counseling program based on her religious beliefs and her refusal to complete “a thought-reform remediation plan.” In an e-mail cited in the suit, ASU assistant professor Dr. Paulette Schenck told Keeton “the faculty did not expect (her) to change (her) personal beliefs and values.” “(T)he unethical part (was) applying your own personal beliefs and values on other people and not truly accepting that others can have different beliefs and values that are equally valid as your own.” Keeton is a graduate student in ASU's K-12 school counseling program, which requires students to adhere to a neutral code of ethics. The university's response explains that ASU professors asked Keeton to complete a remediation plan after she wrote in a term paper regarding the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender, or GLBT, community that “it would be hard (for her) to work with this population.” Keeton also told fellow student Justin C. Earnest that she would tell gay clients “their behavior is morally wrong and then help the client change that behavior,” according to an affidavit by Earnest included in the school's filing. The remediation plan required Keeton to attend counseling workshops, read counseling journals regarding the GLBT community, increase her exposure to the gay population and write reflections on what she was learning. The university's legal filings did not directly address Keeton's contention that she was told to attend a gay pride parade as part of the remediation plan. Members of ASU's faculty also were concerned with Keeton's support of conversion therapy for homosexuals, which the American Counseling Association's ethics committee has concluded “may harm clients.” In her lawsuit, Keeton said the remediation plan “subjects her to aggressive ideological instruction” and asks that she “change her beliefs.” Keeton said she would like to continue her education in the counseling program without fear that the school “will punish her for her religious views” and her “unwillingness to change or abandon those views.” But university officials said if they exempted Keeton from counseling homosexual clients, they would also have to exempt those opposed to war from counseling soldiers. “The same curriculum would require an atheist student counselor to competently counsel a deeply religious client,” the filing said. “A staunch feminist student counselor is required to competently counsel clients from male dominated cultures … the common thread being that all counselors are required to keep separate their own belief system from the counseling relationship.” The suit also points to a U.S. District Court judge's recent opinion in a similar case, Ward v. Wilbanks. In the July 2010 ruling, a judge upheld Eastern Michigan University's decision to dismiss a student who refused to counsel a homosexual student or participate in a remediation plan. University officials said that if the court moves forward with Keeton's case it could affect the school's accreditation and other students' degrees. What's Next? Jennifer Keeton has asked the federal court to force the college to drop its requirement that she complete the remediation plan. Genetically-modified canola has been breeding undetected in the American wilds for at least “several generations,” say scientists. The escaped GM canola has already mutated into a never-before-seen strain, and now it may be modifying other plants too. Canola is a yellow flowering plant that is used to make oil. Researchers working in North Dakota, found strains of transgenic canola growing wild on roadsides far from local farms – meaning the GM plants had spread quite far. They found two strains of transgenic canola. According to Nature: “The extent of the escape is unprecedented,” says Cynthia Sagers, an ecologist at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, who led the research team that found the canola (Brassica napus, also known as rapeseed). Sagers and her team found two varieties of transgenic canola in the wild – one modified to be resistant to Monsanto's Roundup herbicide (glyphosate), and one resistant to Bayer Crop Science's Liberty herbicide (gluphosinate). They also found some plants that were resistant to both herbicides, showing that the different GM plants had bred to produce a plant with a new trait that did not exist anywhere else. Sagers says the previous discoveries in other countries of transgenic canola populations growing outside of cultivation were often in or near fields used for commercial transgenic canola production. A giant ice island has broken off the Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland. A University of Delaware researcher says the floating ice sheet covers 100 square miles – more than four times the size of New York's Manhattan Island. Andreas Muenchow, who is studying the Nares Strait between Greenland and Canada, said the ice sheet broke off early Thursday. He says the new ice island was discovered by Trudy Wohlleben of the Canadian Ice Service. Not since 1962 has such a large chunk of ice calved in the Arctic, but researchers have noticed cracks in recent months in the floating tongue of the glacier. Forget chocolates and flowers, guys. If you want to make a big impression on the opposite sex, try adding red to your daily wardrobe. Lots of red. The color apparently makes a man more attractive, more powerful and more sexually desirable to women, according to a study appearing in the Journal of Experimental Psychology. The research suggests that woman's thoughts and feelings toward men are partly, primitive, a finding sure to open another chapter in the endless discussion of the perennial question `What do women want?' Females were found to view men wearing red-colored clothing as being higher in status and more likely to earn a better living. And it was that very high-status judgment which triggered the attraction, according to according to University of Rochester Psychologist Andrew Elliot, the lead author of the study, which included co-authors from Europe and China. “I definitely think that there's a learned component such that one learns red is the royal color or a powerful color or a color tie that you pull out if you want to make an impression,” he said in an interview with CBSNews.com. “But that also begs the question where that came from and the cross-cultural aspects, where it's found across cultures which otherwise have very little in common.” Indeed, a so-called “red effect” between men and women has been observed in different cultures in both East and West. That may hint at a connection to historical and biological factors. In many societies, for example, the ruling classes equated red clothing with high status. Elliot also said that spilled over in the use of red carpets to celebrate someone's special achievement or the use of red to make a sartorial impression in a business setting. “Part of this is the learned piece,” says Elliot, who noted that when women see red, it evokes deeper reactions that may be biologically ingrained. “The other is the biological piece which might explain why that learning takes place.” Humans share 99% of their genes with primates and in primate societies, the color red is usually found on alpha males. But this goes beyond primates. The study notes that “male red appears to carry an amorous meaning for females” in several animal species where males display intense red coloration. This female attraction to male red has been found in crustaceans, fish, birds and nonhuman primates.” Red, Rank, and Romance in Women Viewing Men As societies around the world incorporated red into their cultures, reinforcing the biologically-based use of the culture, it helped foster a situation where red did need to be natural or observed on the body to exert influence. The study found that “artificial red displayed in close proximity to the body may be sufficient to produce ornament and status effects.” Andrew Elliot, University of Rochester professor of psychology (Credit: Adam Fenster) The biggest surprise for Elliot was the realization that it was status and not raw power which helped drive this “red effect.” “In the wild, red is an indicator of physical strength and dominance,” he said. “Here it wasn't strength and dominance; it was something more involved, though the underlying meaning was the same – that this is a male who will take care of me and has good genetic material and can provide.” The experiments relied on responses from male and female undergraduates from the United States, England, Germany, and China. The findings built on research Elliot and and Daniela Niesta, did a couple of years earlier, when they concluded that the color red enhanced men's attraction to women. In today’s “People In Glass Houses” segment, Chris Matthews accused Fox News of being shills for the Republican Party just minutes before he said “the scariest three words in the English language are: President Sarah Palin.” MSNBC’s “Hardball” on Tuesday began with a lengthy segment in which Matthews, with the help of co-conspirators from the Huffington Post and Media Matters for America, made the case that the Fox News Channel was a platform to assist Republican candidates to get elected. Obviously missing the irony, the very next piece dealt with why President Obama ought to replace Vice President Biden with Hillary Clinton to not only assist him in getting reelected in 2012, but also set her up to win in 2016. Still oblivious to the hypocrisy, Matthews ended the program with his take on why the thought of Palin becoming president is scaring “tens of millions of Americans, and not just Democrats.” To give you an idea of the absurdity of this hour of television, let’s start with quotes from the first segment (videos and partial transcripts follow with commentary): CHRIS MATTHEWS: I want to ask you a larger thing, Eric, now that I have you on, and also Ryan. We just looked at the Gallup poll, the highest favorabilities among Republican potential candidates — potential candidates — for 2012 — I mean, potentially. We don`t know who`s going to run. Palin, Newt and Mike Huckabee — that`s the top three. ERIC BOEHLERT, MEDIA MATTER FOR AMERICA: Right. MATTHEWS: All three are on the payroll of Fox — BOEHLERT: Absolutely! MATTHEWS: — as commentators. But you have to ask yourself — these people have a lot of options. Are they on there as candidates? Are they using Fox as a platform, the way that Sharron [Angle] thinks she can use it as a candidate — BOEHLERT: Right. MATTHEWS: — for 2010? In other words, is she a little ahead of schedule? They`re looking towards 2012 using Fox, she`s trying to use it openly and flagrantly — BOEHLERT: Right. Right. MATTHEWS: — as a vehicle for reelection — or for election to the United States Senate. BOEHLERT: Right. The Fox Green Room is now sort of the GOP convention in waiting for 2012. They`re all on the payroll. I think they`re all — they want to use it to make a lot of money either on Fox News or with books or appearances. And then they`re just going to sort of wait and see how it — see how it plays out. In the meantime, they`ve got this national audience whenever they want it. They`ve got a paycheck, and they`ve got the Fox News, you know, recommendation or seal of approval. MATTHEWS: Yes. BOEHLERT: It`s perfect for them as they wait. As a little background, the segment began with a video clip of Nevada senatorial candidate Sharron Angle telling Fox News’s Carl Cameron how she needs the press to be her friend and how her campaign “wanted them to ask the questions we want to answer so that they report the news the way we want it to be reported.” From this, Matthews, Boehlert, and Huffington Post’s Ryan Grim – notice the absence of any conservatives to go against the consensus! – divined that this meant Fox was actively assisting Republican candidates. And that’s where the fun really began, for after a commercial break, Matthews brought on exclusively left-leaning guests to make the case that Obama should replace Biden with Clinton so as to assure his reelection in 2012 and position her to be president the following eight years. Assisting him to put forward this strategy was former Virginia governor Doug Wilder – who wrote a piece about this for Politico Monday – followed by New York magazine’s John Heilemann: JOHN HEILEMANN, “NEW YORK”: The thing that Governor Wilder is right about and I know that you see is that it`s possible that, in 2012, what President Obama will need most of all is to be able to connect to a set of voters, particularly white working-class and rural voters, that he has trouble with. MATTHEWS: Yes. HEILEMANN: And there would be no bigger asset for him than not just Hillary Clinton Enhanced Coverage LinkingHillary Clinton on the ticket, but having both Clintons out full force on his side in 2012. MATTHEWS: Even if it means — even if it means laying the groundwork for a Clinton ascendancy? HEILEMANN: I think she`s going to run in 2016, no matter what. MATTHEWS: OK. MATTHEWS: An interesting thought from you. HEILEMANN: And she`s going to — and she`s going to run in 2016. And she`s going to — right now, the schedule, I think, for her is, she will do four years and four years only as secretary of state. And if she is an outgoing secretary of state, a lame-duck secretary of state in 2012, she won`t be in the political position to really help Obama. She will do thinking about doing something like going and becoming the chancellor of the University of Iowa to set herself up to run for 2016. MATTHEWS: I agree. HEILEMANN: So, Obama is faced with the notion of Clinton following him anyway. So, why not make the best of that situation and put it to his advantage? MATTHEWS: I don`t know. I had never heard this before. All her people deny that, of course, right? HEILEMANN: Well, of course they do. (CROSSTALK) MATTHEWS: I think it`s fascinating. I think she`s done a great job. (CROSSTALK) HEILEMANN: I don`t think there`s almost anybody who believes them. MATTHEWS: And I agree with you. I think she would help him in Pennsylvania, help in Ohio. And, by the way, I think the general election of 2012 now looks like a nail-biter, closely run. It will have to be. You`re right. And they are not going to win much south of the Mason-Dixon Line. They have got to win those old Democratic states that the Clintons are dominant in, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, et cetera, et cetera, New York. She would ground him up. I just think it has to be handled the way you say if it ever does come to pass. HEILEMANN: Well — MATTHEWS: Joe Biden has got to be happy with this. HEILEMANN: Yes. MATTHEWS: He`s got to have a smile on his face. And he`s got to say, I can`t wait to get to Foggy Bottom and be secretary of state, convincingly, if this ever happens. (CROSSTALK) HEILEMANN: And I think he could say that, Chris, because, as you know, before Obama urged him to become vice president, picked him, that was what Biden had his eye on. He wanted to be secretary of state. MATTHEWS: Well, it`s a great job. HEILEMANN: He`s wanted to be secretary of state his whole life. And on the question of what has to happen in 2012, I think you`re exactly right. I think it`s going to be a nail-biter. You remember, Barack Obama won, what, 42 or 43 percent of the white vote, a really high percentage of the white vote, better than John Kerry — MATTHEWS: Yes. HEILEMANN: — better than Al Gore in 2000. He`s right now running at about 35 percent approval rating with the white vote. And if he`s going to — you can`t win the presidency with 35 percent of the white vote. MATTHEWS: No. HEILEMANN: He needs to do something to solve that problem. Joe Biden is good with those people — MATTHEWS: OK. HEILEMANN: — but Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton are better. MATTHEWS: Well, this will be the ultimate example of President Obama being a transactional politician. I`ll tell you, it looks a little cold on the outside. You may be able to warm it up, John Heilemann. (LAUGHTER) MATTHEWS: You would have another “Game Change.” Here’s maybe the best part of this sequence – when Matthews says his guest is a liberal writer: Thank you. Congratulations, the best book on politics. Nancy Reagan — I was just out there at the Reagan Library — she loves your book. And I know this will offend you as somewhat of a liberal writer, but she says, Ronnie would have loved it, too. There`s a — he`s a pol, too. How nice. So, what we’ve had so far were too liberal guests talking to an admittedly liberal host about how Fox News is a shill network promoting Republican candidates. Next, we had a Democrat introduce an idea specifically designed to assist Obama in his reelection efforts whilst also putting Hillary Clinton in position to win the White House in 2016 thereby ushering in another twelve years of Democrat control of the executive branch of our government. Then, a so-called journalist that Matthews admits is liberal discusses with the host why Wilder’s idea makes sense – all this happening immediately after a segment accusing Fox of being shills for Republicans. Really makes you wonder how everybody involved in the production of this show completely missed the glaring hypocrisy on display. But don’t leave your seats for the concession stand or the restroom just yet, for really putting the icing on the cake the host concluded the show with a monologue about why the scariest three words in the English language are “President Sarah Palin”: MATTHEWS: Let me finish tonight with the fact that for tens of millions of Americans, and not just Democrats, the scariest three words in the English language are: President Sarah Palin. Those words could, if events go a certain way, get a hell of a lot scarier. I`ve noticed how Palin has been positioning herself as the Christian woman in national Republican politics. This gives her incredible leg up in the first in the country Iowa Republican caucuses where the Reverend Pat Robertson once triumphed. The shape of the 2012 Republican presidential field in the Iowa caucuses would be Sarah Palin against a field of Republican men. And with the possible exception of Mike Huckabee, all more secular than she is. The results, the Christian woman beats out the four or five men running somewhere to her left. No one gets to her right — and as long as nobody does, this lone woman in the Republican field, the one openly running as a religious fundamentalist beats the competition, hands down. Get this number into your head. Sarah Palin`s latest Gallup Poll favorable rating among Republican voters nationwide is 76 percent, by far the highest of any contender. So she wins Iowa. Next, New Hampshire. Even if Mitt Romney outpolls Palin in the Granite State, it will be a fact dismissed by the national political press. Why? Because New Hampshire is the Boston media market. It`s right in it and therefore seen as home base for the former Massachusetts governor. Next, Palin trucks down to South Carolina where she made Nikki Haley governor and wins among fellow religious fundamentalists. Another win in Palin country, an increasingly wide expansion in Republican politics. Now for the knockout. Palin has said that Michigan where Romney`s father was governor was overlooked by Republicans last time. She started her book tour there. Republican women who lined up to buy “Going Rogue” are her first round of investors. With two or three men besides Romney still appearing on the ballot, she pulls it out in Michigan. Now, anything is possible at this point. Nominated in Tampa, Florida, and the Republican National Convention in an economy that might still be shaky, the political situation of this country becomes frighteningly dicey. All can I say is that I remember how liberals thought Ronald Reagan could never do it. As we learned in 1980, tough times yield surprising — yes, scary election prospects. That`s HARDBALL for now. Thanks for being with us. And this guy has the nerve to accuse Fox of being shills.
