Obama to Nasa: No Space For You!

read it. instead of science and exploration, obama wants to focus on commercial space flight. sweet, something to make the super rich richer, and robbing us of scientific exploration. oh and it'd lose 70,000-100,000 jobs. great job again obama WASHINGTON, March 10 – U.S. President Barack Obama is trying to tamp down an uprising in politically vital Florida against a new strategy for NASA that has rankled space veterans and lawmakers and sparked fears of job losses. Obama's decision to kill NASA's Constellation program to launch astronauts into orbit and return Americans to the moon has prompted soul-searching on whether the United States is prepared to cede a pre-eminent space role to Russia and China. “As with all great human achievements, our commitment to space must be renewed and encouraged or we will surely be surpassed by other nations who are presently challenging our leadership in space,” Democratic and Republican members of the U.S. Congress from Florida wrote to Obama last week. Obama's move for a greater private sector role in space launches — as he seeks to keep ballooning federal deficits in check — has generated fears of job losses among thousands of NASA employees who provide an important economic base in Florida, a state usually crucial in presidential elections. Employees at major space complexes in Alabama and Texas are also worried. It is making for a potentially explosive environment when Obama travels to the Cape Canaveral area on April 15 to host a space conference with top officials and leaders in the field. “What reception will they get? Not good,” said Keith Cowing, editor of nasawatch.com, a website that closely monitors the U.S. space agency. “It's a gutsy move. It's Daniel in the Lion's Den.” Obama, in his Feb. 1 budget proposal, planned to increase NASA's overall funding to $19 billion in 2011 with an emphasis on science and less spent on space exploration. He would cancel the Constellation program's Orion spacecraft and Ares rockets, after $9 billion and five years of tests. Constellation is aimed at returning astronauts to the moon in the 2020s to clear the way for a Mars mission. Instead, Obama would spend $6 billion a year for five years to support commercial spacecraft development and pursue new technologies to explore the solar system in what the White House called “a more effective and affordable way.” LARGER ISSUE Various members of the far-flung U.S. space community have been troubled by the change, such as former NASA administrator Michael Griffin, who struggled to get more funding for Constellation from the previous administration of President George W. Bush and believes Obama should stick with it. “There's a larger issue here,” Griffin said. “Does the United States want to have a real space program? Do we actually think we can have a robust, exciting, world-leading space program by hiring private enterprise to furnish it?” But John Logsdon, former director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University, said he believed it was time for the private sector to get more involved in space. “There's no reason to think that the technical talent in the private sector, combined with a significant degree of NASA engagement, cannot come up with a good solution,” he said. The debate to some extent has riven the space community. Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon, supports the change in direction while Harrison Schmitt, one of the last on the lunar surface, opposes it. NASA already has contracts with Space Exploration Technologies and Orbital Sciences Corp to deliver cargo to the International Space Station. SpaceX and other firms are developing spaceships that can carry passengers to orbit and back. The shuttle system still has four more flights to get crews and hardware to the International Space Station before the craft are retired. After that, NASA will be without a heavy-lift capability for a period of time. This means Americans would have to pay to ride on Russian rockets to get into orbit, a stark turn of events after the pivotal battle the United States and the Soviet Union fought to outdo each other in the space race. To maintain a lift capability, Florida Democratic Senator Bill Nelson wants the administration to add one shuttle flight and develop the Ares rockets that are part of the Constellation program. Ultimately, Nelson believes Obama needs to give the United States a goal for its space program and hopes it will be a mission to Mars. Finally somebody will get Sarah Palin on the witness stand!

Former Alaska Governor and Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin is expected to be a witness at a University of Tennessee student’s internet fraud trial next month. University of Tennessee student David Kernell, now 22, is accused of accessing Sarah Palin’s personal e-mail account (gov.palin@yahoo.com) while she was Sen. John McCain’s running mate. Palin was governor at the time. Prosecutors contend Kernell answered some security questions, like Palin’s date of birth and where she met her spouse, then reset her password. He’s accused of posting the new password on the internet so others could look at her e-mail account. I doubt the defense attorney will ask Palin any of the questions that most of us are dying to hear her answer, but I know I will still be paying very close attention to this trial. Just in case.

Lil Wayne: A Closer Look At His First Day Behind Bars

‘The best thing to do in the first 24 hours is to keep your mouth shut as much as possible,’ one expert says. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: Andy Kropa/ Getty Images Lil Wayne has been booked and processed into the Eric M. Taylor Center on Rikers Island to begin his one-year jail sentence . According to most experts, the first 24 hours are the most crucial to ensuring a successful incarceration. Dr. Jefferey Ian Ross, a faculty member at the University of Baltimore’s Criminology Division, advises that the superstar MC keep to himself as he gets adjusted to his new surroundings. “Most of the time, the best thing to do in the first 24 hours is to keep your mouth shut as much as possible,” Ross told MTV News. “Keep your eyes open and basically do as you’re told by the correction officers. Essentially, you shouldn’t look at other inmates in the eye, ’cause to a lot of people, that may be considered an aggressive type of action. Also, don’t look at their property, because they may feel like that’s aggressive as well and that you want their property.” Ross, who wrote the book “Behind Bars: Surviving Prison” along with Stephen C. Richards, explained that most inmates are housed with similar offenders, but there are instances were prisoners get bored and lash out. For these reasons, it’s important for someone like Lil Wayne, a celebrity, to maintain as normal of a disposition as he can. “Say ‘yes sir,’ ‘no sir,’ no cutting in line,” Ross said. “Don’t act like you have special privileges.” Unlike NFL star-turned-inmate Plaxico Burress, Lil Wayne shunned a jail coach or a sentencing specialist. Ross said that decision put Wayne at a disadvantage, because some benefits include assistance in building a network within the prison facilities. Sentencing coaches, in some cases, are previously jailed people who can connect incoming inmates with those they can trust inside. According to Ross, Lil Wayne will eventually have to venture out from his own connections. But in the interim, Ross suggested the old adage that prisoners need to just “do their time.” “Keep your mouth shut, keep your eyes open, be respectful — not only to correction officers, but to inmates,” he said. “And don’t be a snitch and don’t complain about the housing accommodations, follow those rules and they call that ‘do your own time.’ “It’s not easy,” Ross added. “Criminals don’t face a cakewalk, [regardless of the length of their sentence]. Their liberties and choices are taken away from them, and they’re basically at the will of prison.” Related Videos Lil Wayne Goes To Jail: Celebs React Lil Wayne’s ‘Road To Rikers’ Related Photos Lil Wayne Heads To Rikers Island Related Artists Lil Wayne

In Video, Audio and Writing, Pentagon Shooter Left Bizarre Internet Trail [Shootings]

Authorities have identified 36 year-old John Patrick Bedell as the man who calmly opened fire at a Pentagon checkpoint Thursday, wounding two police officers before being killed himself. His Internet activity suggests a man with deeply paranoid political views. According to the AP, Bedell walked up to a Pentagon checkpoint at 6:40pm, drew a gun and began shooting. Richard Keevill, the chief of Pentagon police told the AP: “He just reached in his pocket, pulled out a gun and started shooting… He walked up very cool. He had no real emotion on his face.” Here is Bedell, also with no real emotion on his face, as he explains in a Youtube video his complex system of “information currency,” which appears to have been one of his obsessions: Bedell was clearly intelligent; he was an avid software developer and aspiring engineer who worked to develop technology he believed would lead to “liberty and justice. He was nonetheless a certifiable wackjob. Steve Huff at mediaelites has posted a summary of what can be gleaned from Bedell’s Internet activity. Bedell, who had a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, believed the government was behind 9/11, and these beliefs interfaced strangely with an enthusiasm for marijuana legalization and the “Information Currency” system he explains above. Speaking of the suicide of Marine Col. James Sabow—who 9/11 conspiracy theorists believe was assassinated to cover up a 9/11 plot—Bedell wrote on his wikipedia profile (now deleted): I am determined to see that justice is served in the death of Colonel James Sabow, as a step toward establishing the truth of events such as the September 11 demolitions and institutions such as the coup regime of 1963 that mantains itself in power through the global drug trade, financial corruption, and murder, among other crimes. Bedell claims these beliefs led him to attempt to devise a subversive marijuana-based monetary system based on his ideas of Information Currency. He started with a 16-plant growing operation on his balcony in Irving, CA. (In fact, Bedell uploaded a picture of his own pot plant to wikipedia.) Police discovered his plants in June 2006 and he was arrested. The felony complaint, which he posted to a pro-marijuana website, details a contentious arrest: When the police came to Bedell’s door, he wouldn’t let them in and began resisting arrest, pushing against police and collapsing to the floor when they tried to bring hm out of his apartment: Here’s what they found: His marijuana operation thwarted, he appeared to turn his efforts to the Internet and his software development company, Infoenge. (The first post on the company’s blog is October 3, 2006 ) With Infoeng, Bedell working on technology that might someday lead to ” a USB flash drive that performs personal DNA sequencing information “—presumably as a component of his Information Currency scheme. Almost every trace Bedell left on the Internet from that point on displays an obsession with information—storing, retrieving, and revealing it—coupled with boilerplate Libertarian and pro-marijuana ideology. His wikipedia talkpage is a litany of rejected edits, detailing his efforts to insert 9/11 truther dogma into various pages. An Amazon review praises the book Inside Delta Force for its Insights into America’s Secret History He apparently left audio recordings as well, which he posted to the Internet Archive. A two-part address called “Directions to Freedom” which proses “directions to freedom, security, and prosperity, which could be considered his manifesto. “Directions to Freedom” opens with Hello, thank you for listening. I have an intense personal desire for freedom and I need your help so we can, together, continue to enjoy the benefits of freedom and work toward the more perfect realization of liberty and justice in our society. Anyone hoping for a better glimpse at what led Bedell from an obsession with the liberating power of information to violence would probably do well starting with these recordings—which he transcribed on his blog here . What Bedell did was terrible, but any attempt at writing Bedell off as simply a brain-washed Glenn Beck zombie or an idiotic anti-government 9/11 truther can’t capture the complexity of his motivations and the singular weirdness going on in his brain. As a Mediaelites commenter writes, “this guy was one of those dudes to smart for his own good and far from a tea bagger.” [ Infoeng ][ Rothbardix ][ Tekgnosis ][ mediaelites ][ AP ]
