Source: Johnny Nunez / Getty Safaree has been making headlines as of late with his impressive man package and new music. But an interview with DJ Envy and his wife Gia Casey on their podcast, The Casey Crew , has the Hunnid rapper making headlines over his ex Nicki Minaj again. According to Safaree, the popular rapper was abusive. DJ Envy claimed there were times when Safaree couldn’t leave the house. “I don’t wanna say you were battered but you were an abused boyfriend…sometimes Safaree couldn’t leave the crib,” he described. “I swear on everything!” Safaree agreed and admitted the fights between he and Nicki were getting so intense he feared he’d eventually go to jail. “Nah, Nah that’s true but it’s because she was sheltered, she’s in her cocoon and I’m there with her. I didn’t really have a life outside of that. I was really comfortable but then the fights and stuff it was getting too crazy. I was like, you know what? I don’t wanna go to jail, I don’t wanna go to the hospital.” When Gia inquired what would cause such vicious arguments, he recalled an instance when he refused to fetch Nicki’s bag, which lead to a moment of reckoning. “I usually never ever ever say stuff,” he said. “But I’m going to say this one time. It was one time, it was something…I left and came back…she wanted me to get a bag for her…’yo, go upstairs and grab my bag for me,’ but it’s just, the way it was said, I’m not going to get it. You can’t just keep talking to me like that. I’m not gonna go get it,” he said. The affects of abuse lingered after their relationship was over, Safaree said. “I’m not going to be having hands put on me and the verbal, it’s like, yo, it takes a while to get over that, like people see me, I wasn’t like, it took me a while to have my confidence…that’s why I was going to the gym so hard because I’m like, yo, I feel like sh-t, I gotta do something to feel good about myself. Let me get a six-pack,” he said. Nicki vaguely references her relationship and certain situations in her songs. We’re still dying to hear her perspective on it all. Listen to the full podcast, here. Famed writer and Atlantic columnist Ta-Nehisi Coates sat down with stars Chadwick Boseman and Lupita Nyong’o on Tuesday at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem to talk about the juggernaut that is “Black Panther.” Two weeks after the movie’s release, the Marvel flick is something of a phenomenon–a cinematic feat that has successfully turned the movie world on its head, while at the same time shining a light on the humanity of Black men and women around the world. 1. Tradition vs. innovation. Throughout the movie several themes are embedded within the storyline of a masked, African suited man who has the keys to save the world. It is also a story about re-imagining our understanding of Africa and shutting out the negative imagery centered around the continent. The disconnect not only refers to how White people view the country, but people of the African diaspora as well. “There’s such a deep misunderstanding about where either of us is coming from,” Nyongo’o stated. The characters exist between wanting to spread the resources of their vast land, to fiercely protecting it from the outside world. Boseman touched on the topic when he talked about understanding his character who was born with a “vibraninum spoon” in his mouth-referring to Wakanda’s most valuable resource. “It’s power. It’s having privilege and not being aware that people don’t have the privilege,” Boseman said. 2. Black women are the source. Nyong’o and fellow co-star Danai Gurira are the two female leads of the film. While Nyongo’s character Nakia plays love interest of T’Challa, Boseman’s character Okeyo is the female general of the Dora Milaje, a badass army group of women dedicated to protecting the throne. In real life, the two women have known each other for 11 years–Nyongo’o also co-starred with Gurira’s Broadway adaptation of her award-winning play, “Eclipsed.” “Even in the process, Ryan (Coogler) invited us to participate in the shaping of the story,” Nyong’o said. With me and Danai, we really came together to advocate for the female perspective. We already had a sisterhood, now it’s unbreakable.” Nyong’o said she deeply enjoyed working on a movie dedicated to showing nuanced female characters. “To tell a story about a women with agency. In Wakanda, beside every good man was a good woman.” 3. The diaspora. Source: Shahar Azran / Getty First things first–the movie is unbashedly Black. Everything from the wardrobe choices to the cast, embody the full breadth of the African diaspora. Actors in the movie are people of color from different regions, representing England, the United States, Kenya and the Carribean. In the theatre, the pride also seeped into neighborhoods and higher learning institutions. Wakanda is also equally diverse–pulling imagery and tradition from existing African nations and tribes to create what we see on-screen. The movie does its best to encapsulate a true Black experience. 4. We are all Killmonger. Family and loyalty, the hope of finding oneself in the struggle. Although Michael B. Jordan was not present at the event, his character, Erik Killmonger , was discussed heavily. Killmonger is the “long-lost” cousin of T’Challa . In the movie his character’s sole life purpose is to challenge his cousin’s stake as heir to the throne after the sudden death of T’Challa’s father, T’Chaka . Killmonger also wants to use Wakanda’s resources to liberate Black people around the world. Boseman touched on Killmonger significance to African-Americans, as the character was particularly honed by the movie’s director, Ryan Coogler . T’Challa and Killmonger also come to head on privilege vs. the struggle. Killmonger views his estranged family as disconnected and privileged, unwilling to intervene in freeing those in bondage. T’Challa, stirred by uncovering Killmonger’s identity, still feels that he is the rightful leader of Wakanda–akin to manifest destiny. It is not until Killmonger’s dramatic death scene that T’Challa comes to a place of compassion for his cousin. “I don’t know if we could accept T’Challa as our hero, if he didn’t accept Killmonger,” Boseman said referring to the stirring scene. 5. Wakanda represent. At the end of the discussion, the host invited the audience to participate by throwing up the infamous chest “W” alongside Boseman, Coates and Nyong’o. The moment signified a unilateral understanding that Wakanda, although fictional is aspirational. A country proud of its heritage, proud of never being conquered, proud of its secret contribution to the world. All of this embedded within Africa, the motherland of all existence–Wakanda is literally forever. Watch the whole discussion above. JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The first time John Lewis traveled to Mississippi in 1961, he was arrested and jailed with other Freedom Riders, black and white, who challenged segregation in a bus station. Lewis, who is African-American, remembers going into a restroom labeled for white men only. A Jackson police officer told him and other young people in the group to leave. They refused. “The next words he said: ‘You’re under arrest.’ And that was my introduction to the state of Mississippi and the city of Jackson,” Lewis told The Associated Press on Thursday in a phone interview from Atlanta. After 37 days of being locked up in sweltering local jails and a notorious state prison on the disorderly conduct charge, Lewis was released. He continued working for racial equality in Mississippi and across the South in the 1960s, and as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, he helped organize the 1963 March on Washington. Georgia voters elected him as a Democrat to the U.S. House in 1986, and he remains in office. Lewis, 78, returns to Mississippi on Friday, one of five people being honored for advancing civil rights. A private group called Friends of Mississippi Civil Rights organized a gala Friday and symposium Saturday to celebrate the new Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. Lewis’ jail mug shot hangs in a gallery at the museum with those of other Freedom Riders. He was scheduled to speak at the museum’s state-sponsored opening in December but canceled his appearance because Republican Gov. Phil Bryant invited President Donald Trump. Lewis said Thursday that he has never met Trump but, “I felt that I couldn’t be there with him after he said some unbelievable things about individuals and about groups — whether it’s members of the African-American community or the Latino community or the Dreamers,” younger immigrants who arrived in the country illegally as children and have been protected under President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA. “I just couldn’t be there with him.” The opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and the adjoining Museum of Mississippi History capped the state’s bicentennial observation. The two museums are in downtown Jackson and are separate entities under a single roof. They are a short distance from the bus station where Lewis and the other Freedom Riders were arrested. The general museum skims 15,000 years of history, from the Stone Age to modern times. The civil rights museum concentrates on the intense period of social change from 1945 to 1976. Lewis grew up south of Montgomery, Alabama, and was 15 years old when a black 14-year-old from Chicago, Emmett Till, was lynched while visiting relatives near the small town of Money, Mississippi. A cousin who was with Till said he had whistled at a white woman in a country store. “I kept thinking that if something like this could happen to Emmett Till, it could happen to cousins of mine that were living in Buffalo, New York, or were living in Detroit, Michigan, when they came to Alabama to visit during the summer,” Lewis said. One of the other people being honored Friday for civil rights work is Rita Schwerner Bender, who demanded answers from Mississippi officials after her first husband, Michael Schwerner, and two other activists, James Chaney and Andrew Goodman, were killed outside Philadelphia, Mississippi, in 1964 — a case that became known by its FBI name, “Mississippi Burning.” Bender, now an attorney in Seattle, said Wednesday that in accepting the award in Mississippi, she intends to urge people to stand up for justice. “Most social change doesn’t happen without a demand side,” she said. Bender said she also would emphasize the importance of public education: “How can we be a thriving democracy which provides for the intellectual development of all our people, for the health of our people, for our place as contributors on the world stage, without high quality education?” The other honorees are Ruby Bridges, a Tylertown, Mississippi, native who faced threats and ostracism when she became the first black child to integrate a public school in New Orleans in 1960; former state Rep. Robert Clark, who in 1967 became the first African-American of the 20th Century to win a seat in the Mississippi Legislature; and Democratic U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi. ____ Follow Emily Wagster Pettus on Twitter: http://twitter.com/EWagsterPettus .
