My Favorite Scene: John Cusack Picks a Classic Paul Newman Moment From The Verdict

Having had the chance to work with one of his heroes, Paul Newman (in 1989’s Fat Man and Little Boy ), John Cusack turned to a Newman classic for a round of Movieline’s My Favorite Scene . “There’s a scene of Paul Newman in The Verdict that I would use as the best example of economy and what a close-up is supposed to mean,” Cusack explained during our chat for The Raven . “It’s the example where the film does what no other art form can do – a book can’t do it, and theater can’t do it, it’s only for film, and it’s the best example of it.” Pay attention, kids – Professor Cusack’s Film Language 101 is in session. Really, a Cusack class in film history wouldn’t be so farfetched; In addition to acting, writing, producing, and Tweeting , Cusack’s also a keen student of cinema – so much so, he jokes, he could teach a class (“On other people’s films,” he adds). When put to the Movieline challenge, he didn’t hesitate to draw upon one of the best scenes in Sidney Lumet ’s 1982 courtroom classic. “It’s Sidney Lumet and Paul Newman and David Mamet at their finest,” he began. “Paul Newman plays this ambulance-chasing lawyer whose client has been turned into a vegetable, and the hospital is trying to settle out of court because they’re protecting the doctors from a malpractice suit. It’s a big ethical dilemma. He goes to take a picture of his client, this woman who he hasn’t seen, and she’s on a life support machine – she’s been turned into a vegetable.” “You hear the breathing and breathing, and he takes the pictures,” he continued, “and then, as they develop, he has a moment of conscience. He sits down and he looks at the pictures and he looks at her, and you can see his entire life – all the compromises he’s made, all the short-cuts, all the lies – come crashing down on him.” “It’s still a wide shot, and from the back a nurse comes in and says, ‘Sir, you can’t be in here.’ And then you cut in close on Paul Newman and Paul Newman says three words: He says ‘I’m her attorney.’ And in those three words, what washes over his face tells the entire story, and it tells as much as a novel could ever tell.” Watch the scene below at the 6:40 mark. “If I was to teach what film can be, and what a close-up is supposed to be, and what great acting, directing, and writing is supposed to be, I would use that scene,” Cusack said. “It all comes together and it’s probably the best close-up that I’ve ever seen. I think it’s Newman’s finest hour – one of his many masterful pieces of acting.” Couldn’t agree more. Flashback: The Verdict was indeed nominated for five Oscars, including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor (James Mason), and Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Picture, but was eclipsed that year by a Gandhi near-sweep. The Raven , meanwhile, hits theaters next Friday, April 27 — stay tuned for Movieline’s full interview with Cusack. Read more My Favorite Scenes. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Exclusive: G. Dep Calls Guilty Verdict ‘God’s Will’

‘I’ma just stay strong and hopefully I’ll see y’all in the near future,’ the former Bad Boy MC tells MTV News in a jailhouse interview. By Jesse Gissen G Dep Photo: Denise Truscello/ WireImage Two days after being convicted of second-degree murder, G. Dep spoke exclusively to MTV News on Thursday (April 19), where he reacted to the verdict from behind bars. “However it went down, it was just one of them things where I knew I was facing some type of charge, so whatever the verdict was, I knew it was God’s will,” Dep told us by phone as he awaits sentencing in lockup. The former Bad Boy rapper, born Trevell Coleman, was found guilty on Tuesday of killing John Henkel in a botched robbery attempt nearly two decades ago in his hometown of Harlem. Coleman made headlines in 2010 after he confessed — unprovoked — that he had committed the crime in a surprising confession to police at Manhattan’s 25th precinct. At the time, Coleman said that he longed to clear his conscience. Although he took blame for the shooting, Coleman’s lawyer, Anthony Ricco, argued in court last week that the victim was not the same man that police had pinned to the crime. Despite the outcome, the 37-year-old seemed at peace with the judgment call. “You know, someone was taken from [the Henkel] family, so I can’t feel like I was robbed in any kind of way,” he said. “I just want to thank everyone that was involved in the case. I don’t have no ill thoughts towards anybody.” That is if you don’t count a few reporters who covered the case for New York’s Daily News. “I just wanna let people know there’s a couple of reporters out there that’s just talking that talk,” he snarled. “I just had to make sure everything was everything,” he explained about his decision to fight the charge in court. “I was already putting myself out there. I had to make sure everything was what it was. That’s why the trial even was on.” G. Dep signed to Diddy’s Bad Boy Records in 1998, and went on to release his debut LP, Child of the Ghetto, in 2001. The record spawned two well-received singles, “Let’s Get It” and “Special Delivery,” but Dep’s rap career failed to take off. By 2003, he had parted ways with Bad Boy. Coleman took another stab at the indusry, dropping a mixtape the following year, but his various arrests and battles with drug abuse thwarted those efforts. Dep is scheduled for sentencing on May 8, when he’ll face up to 15 years in jail. “I’ma just stay strong and hopefully I’ll see y’all in the near future or the far future,” Dep said when asked how he feels about the impending jail time. “I know life goes on, praise God. And one day maybe I could say hello to y’all again.” Related Artists G Dep

The X Factor Results Show: Down to Four…

Another young contestant got sent home this week on The X Factor. A week after Drew Ryniewicz was reduced to tears, the same fate befell 13-year old Rachel Crow, who fell into the bottom two and then got eliminated after the judges deadlocked and the show left the final decision up to viewers. After falling into her mother’s arms following the reading of the verdict, Crow – whose Tuesday night performances you can watch HERE – composed herself and said: “I love you so much, everybody, for voting for me and thank you for giving me this because without you I am nothing. I hope this is not my ending. I know it’s not and I will go so far. I promise you!” What do you think? Did Rachel deserve to go home this week?

Michael Jackson Doctor To Be Sentenced Today

Conrad Murray faces four years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. By Gil Kaufman Dr. Conrad Murray Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images Former Michael Jackson doctor Conrad Murray will learn his fate Tuesday morning (November 29) in a Los Angeles courtroom. The cardiologist, who was found guilty of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter November 7, is facing up to four years in state prison in the death of the pop icon. Though the jury reached a unanimous verdict in the case, due to recent changes in California law aimed at lessening prison overcrowding, experts told MTV News that it’s unlikely Murray will spend much, if any, time behind federal bars. At the time of the verdict, Los Angeles-based criminal defense attorney Mike Cavalluzzi told MTV News it was too early to predict what kind of time Dr. Murray might do, calling the decision one of the toughest ones facing Judge Michael Pastor in the wake of the six-week trial. “[Pastor] will have to seriously consider all of the mitigating factors which would lean toward Dr. Murray not doing any jail time and all of the aggravating factors that would lead toward him going to state prison,” said Cavalluzzi, who was not involved in the case but has represented a number of clients facing felony charges. “It seems to me, at first blush, that any jail time wouldn’t be appropriate in this case given the fact that Dr. Murray has no criminal record and there truly was no malice, no intent to actually harm Michael Jackson at all. What he was really doing was succumbing to the wishes of a patient, and unfortunately, that patient was not a person whose wishes should have been succumbed to.” After Murray was found guilty and swiftly sent to jail with no bail, his attorneys said they were planning to appeal the verdict . They will wait until after sentencing hearing to do so, but either way, Murray will face the loss of his medical license in California. One of Murray’s defense attorneys, Nareg Gourjian, said at the time that the doctor’s team plans to ask for probation but expects his client to spend just “a little bit” of time in county jail. A$AP Rocky Having A ‘Good Time’ On Debut Mixtape

‘I just want people to have fun again,’ Harlem’s newly crowned prince tells Mixtape Daily of Live.Love.A$AP. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Steven Roberts A$AP Rocky Photo: Polo Grounds Main Pick Headliner : A$AP Rocky Representing : Harlem, New York Mixtape : Live.Love.A$AP Real Spit : A$AP Rocky is having the time of his life, and he wants you to join him. “I just want people to have fun again; people don’t know how to have fun,” the Harlem, New York, rapper recently told Mixtape Daily. “It’s all about mean-mugging and ballin’ and bottle poppin,’ and sh–. I feel like we can just have brew, cigarettes and some bad bitches and have a good time,” he theorized about the current hip-hop landscape. “We don’t really need all that other fancy sh– because that doesn’t happen every day in real life.” And with that notion, Rocky’s first mixtape, Live.Love.A$AP, was birthed. Noted for his Southern approach to hip-hop, the NYC-bred Rocky sets the record straight on the tape’s opener, “Palace.” On the operatic slow-roller, Rocky pays homage to rap from other regions while looking to carve his own identity. “Don’t remember me as a wannabe, New Orleans n—a/ Slash lean sipper, Tennessee n—a/ Nah, influenced by Houston, hear it in my music/ A trill n—a to the truest, show you how to do this.” His breakout single, “Peso,” appears on his debut tape, but Rock’s fan-favorite “Purple Swag” has been replaced with a remix that features producer/rapper Spaceghost Purrp and A$AP Nast adding verses. The Clams Casino-produced “Wassup,” melodic and menacing at once, is a sleepy track with a rolling bass, and it finds the newly crowned N.Y. prince putting it down for his hometown. “I be that pretty mother—-er, Harlem’s what I’m reppin’,” he spits, recycling the quotable line from “Peso.” The A$AP circle is tight-knit, so features from outsiders are kept to a minimum, though Schoolboy Q’s contribution on “Brand New Guy” is clearly welcome. The Black Hippy MC steals the show, spitting murder and watching Netflix on the couch with his rival’s girlfriend. It’s quite the comedy. A$AP Rocky’s out-of-town influence is present throughout: “Trilla” is a bluesy, Deep South affair with a hint of Midwestern Bone Thugs-style vocals, while “Get Lit” is a perfectly chopped and screwed Texas throwback. It may not be New York, but it most certainly is fun. Joints to Check For

Michael Jackson’s Family Reacts To Guilty Verdict

‘Even though nothing can bring back our son, justice has finally been served!’ family says in a statement to TMZ. By Andrea Duncan-Mao LaToya Jackson outside Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday Photo: Toby Canham/Getty Images Seventeen members of Michael Jackson ‘s family — including his parents, brothers Jermaine and Randy and sister LaToya — were on hand Monday (November 7) in the Los Angeles courtroom when a guilty verdict was read in the involuntary manslaughter case against Jackson’s former physician, Dr. Conrad Murray . While the audible gasp heard when the verdict was read was reportedly that of Kathy Hilton — a close Jackson family friend and mom to Paris and Nicky Hilton — the family remained stoic during the proceedings and did not hold a formal press conference afterward. Upon exiting the courthouse, Jackson’s mother, Katherine, told local news cameras, “Justice was served. I want to thank the jury for doing the right thing,” while brother Randy said he was “ecstatic,” and Jermaine said the verdict felt “wonderful.” Latoya, wearing a black and gold jacket reminiscent of something her late brother would wear, waved her arms at the crowd in celebration and also tweeted: “VICTORY.” TMZ reported that the family later released a statement, reading, “We have been waiting for this moment for a very long time and we couldn’t hold back tears of joy in the courtroom. Even though nothing can bring back our son, justice has finally been served! We can’t wait to go home and share this day with Michael’s children.” Dr. Murray was found guilty on one count of involuntary manslaughter and faces up to four years in jail and the loss of his medical license. Kristen Stewart Squirms Reliving First MTV Interview

‘I just can’t handle that,’ ‘Twilight’ actress says, jumping out of her chair during ‘MTV First: Breaking Dawn.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart at MTV First: “Breaking Dawn” Photo: MTV News Our “MTV First: Breaking Dawn” was full of so many fun moments between “Twilight Saga” stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner that we would be remiss if we didn’t go back to highlight a few of the best. One of the most surprising and entertaining moments occurred when we informed Stewart that we brought a clip of her first-ever interview with MTV. Her reaction was immediate: “No, no, no, no, no, no, no. I actually can’t do this!” she said when we told her we were ready to roll the clip. “Ah! I don’t think you understand what that does to me. Uh. It’s happening,” she said, half-covering her face as the clip rolled. In the clip, from MTV’s first interview with Stewart and Pattinson on the set of the first “Twilight” movie, we ask Stewart what impressed her about working with Pattinson thus far. “I think he’s really handsome,” she jokes, sending Pattinson into a fit of laughter. “No, no. He can’t lie,” she admits, taking the question seriously. “He’s incapable of lying, so it’s pretty clear when we need to work on the scene.” Pattinson cuts in, joking that Stewart doesn’t think he can act: “What she means [by ‘lying’] is ‘acting.’ ” Stewart counters: “Nope. That’s so not what I mean. He’s just copping out,” she adds, and then the clip fades to black, and we see Stewart up out of her interview chair, half-pacing in front of Pattinson and Lautner. “I just can’t handle that,” Stewart attempted to explain of her discomfort watching herself onscreen. “As far as I’m concerned, this doesn’t exist,” she said, indicating that she was trying to block out the fact that we were taping an interview at that very moment. When asked what it was about the interview that had her so unsettled, Stewart said that it was just a “very different” time. “We’ve had a lot of development,” she said about her growing interactions with MTV News. “Our relationships have really progressed, I feel.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Conrad Murray Verdict Divides Michael Jackson Fans

‘I feel like though justice was made, it really wasn’t,’ one MTV.com reader writes. By James Dinh Fans react to Conrad Murray’s involuntary manslaughter conviction Photo: Pool/ Getty Images Buzz surrounding the involuntary manslaughter trial against Michael Jackson’s former personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray , reached a new high Monday afternoon (November 7) when the jury announced the verdict for the long-awaited case: guilty. Fans took to the comments section of MTV News, as well as our Facebook and Twitter pages, to share their opinions on the verdict, which was reached after almost nine hours of deliberation. One MTV.com user appeared somewhat pleased with the news, writing, “I feel like though justice was made, it really wasn’t. He gets 4 years prison, but then because of overcrowding gets sentenced reduced and serves at a jail. On top of that his sentence might be reduced further. Just because you have money and you are a doctor does not mean you have the right to be negligent. Michael was someone’s son, brother, uncle, father. It’s unfair. RIP MJ.” According to Twitter user xAshley_Arianax, the jury came to the right conclusion. “Well, Dr. Conrad Murray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson. Justice was served. RIP Michael Jackson,” she wrote. As many celebrated the verdict, others, including Christina Wixson, were on the fence about the ruling. “Man, I don’t know on this. However, I do feel that physicians take an oath…if this guy would have been found not guilty-it would make that oath and the job of physician null and void,” she wrote on MTV News’ Facebook . Jason Hubbard shared his theory about Conrad Murray: “The Dr. has responsibility and now has to pay his debt. A Doctor’s job is to help the sick not enable a drug addict because they can pay a lot of money.” Some fans of the late pop icon weren’t pleased that the doctor was only found guilty of involuntary manslaughter instead of a more severe charge. “Dr. Murray’s possible 4 year sentence does not feel like ‘justice’ for the death of a hero…. RIP Michael Jackson,” Twitter user WildeScarlette wrote. Another commenter, Katrina Maxwell, thought Murray was “guilty of breaching medical conduct due to who his client was” but “was paid all that money to do as his client instructed him.” “He’s not a murderer,” she added. Amanda Knox Verdict: Not Guilty, Murder Conviction Overturned!

Amanda Knox learned her fate at last as the verdict in her high-profile appeal of a murder conviction was read aloud in an Italian courtroom this evening. It was overturned. The jury found her not guilty of murder, but guilty of defamation. She was ordered to be set free immediately after her acquittal. Knox and her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, also cleared today, were sentenced to 25 and 26 years in prison following their 2009 convictions. The 24-year-old student tearfully denied brutally killing roommate Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy, 2007, pleading for freedom earlier Monday. “I am not what they say I am. I did not kill. I did not rape. I did not steal,” Amanda Knox said this morning, her voice trembling with emotion. It was the most important speech of her life. It showed, and it worked. “People always ask me, ‘who is Amanda Knox?’ I am the same person that I was four years ago, exactly the same person,” she continued. “The only thing that now separates me from four years ago is my suffering.” Knox and her family, present in Perugia, Italy, for the verdict, have always claimed that Amanda’s imprisonment was a monumental judicial mistake. Prosecutors, in turn, have depicted Knox as a manipulative liar, and were seeking to increase her sentence to life in prison. Instead, she’s free. The jury was made up of the presiding judge, a side judge and six jurors, five of them women, and had several options regarding deliberations. They could acquit both defendants and set them free, which they did. They also could have upheld the conviction, but changed the sentence. Amanda Knox Verdict Over the course of the trial, the defendants’ appeal had significantly improved, mainly because a court-ordered independent review cast serious doubts over the main DNA evidence linking the two to the crime. Prosecutors maintain that Knox’s DNA was found on the handle of a kitchen knife thought to have killed Kercher, whose DNA was on the blade. They also said Sollecito’s DNA was on the clasp of Kercher’s bra as part of a mix of evidence that included the murder victim’s genetic profile. But the independent review – ordered at the request of the defense, which had always disputed those findings – reached a different conclusion. The two experts found that police conducting the investigation had made glaring errors in evidence-collecting and that below-standard testing and possible contamination raised doubts over the attribution of DNA traces. In the end, a jury agreed. Unlike the Casey Anthony case, however, it appears that, at least to a degree, evidence helped clear Knox rather than simply being absent to the degree that she couldn’t be convicted. What do you think? Was justice served? Amanda Knox :
