Can Kanye West And Jay-Z Outdo Themselves On Watch The Throne?

‘It’s gonna be like a band that’s worked together for a long time that’s maturing into a new sound,’ one expert tells MTV News about joint album. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images As Kanye West upped the ante on his and Jay-Z’s joint project (as if the title Watch the Throne weren’t enough) from an EP to an LP, the Chicago star also ratcheted up expectations for the album. Fresh off feeding bloggers, critics and fans a full plate with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, ‘Ye now faces the challenge of doing it again, mere months later. The collaboration is already one of the biggest events of the year, whether or not it arrives next week, as Kanye announced on New Year’s Eve. But given the challenge, will the two icons be able to pull it off? “A lot of cats always talk about doing something together. It’s a cool idea at 3 in the morning, but it never pans out,” Rap Radar’s Elliott Wilson told MTV News, referring to grounded efforts by Nas and AZ, Foxy Brown and Lil’ Kim and countless other superstar duos. “But the fact that they’re really doing something is a smart move.” Creatively, the project gives Jay-Z, arguably the most decorated MC in history, new ground to cover. And for ‘Ye, it gives him the opportunity to ascend to a pedestal (albeit it briefly) next to Hov in the hip-hop landscape. As a result of their friendship, it’s easy to see why they came together in the first place. But perhaps the results (‘Ye quickly concocting beats and Jay putting rhymes to them just as fast) made the effort expand into a full album. “They have a very interesting and dynamic relationship. They love each other, and they also have a very competitive relationship,” Complex Editor in Chief Noah Callahan-Bever explained. “But I think it brings out the best in both of them.” There’s no arguing the Kanye West-powered Blueprint remains one of Hov’s most revered projects. “Some of Jay-Z’s best work has been on Kanye’s beats,” New York Times critic Jon Caramanica said. “Even on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, you hear Jay stepping his game up. You hear Jay trying. ‘Cause he’s not just tossing out this verse and it’s gonna be on Joe Blow’s record. He’s like, ‘This is the verse for the Kanye record, so I’m gonna do this there where I really try to fit the mood and really go in.’ And I think Kanye is bringing that out of him, whether it’s implicitly or explicitly.” Their union may not be groundbreaking, since they have a track record, including tracks on West’s most recent record (“Monster” and “So Appalled”) that were originally slated for the EP. Instead of an end result dripped in mystery, though, like most experimental projects, the beauty of this one is that we’ve sampled it before. It’s just a matter of meeting the potential of so many of their past hits. “It’s gonna be like a band that’s worked together for a long time that’s maturing into a new sound,” Caramanica said. What are you expecting from the ‘Ye and Jay joint album? Let us know in the comments!

Kanye West And Jay-Z Are ‘So Appalled’ On New Track

‘Ye also drafts Swizz Beatz, RZA, Pusha T and Cyhi Da Prynce for latest G.O.O.D. Friday track. By Mawuse Ziegbe Kanye West Photo: Gabriela Maj/ Getty Images Another Friday, another Kanye West -helmed all-star collabo. The hip-hop superstar’s latest weekly offering, “So Appalled,” continues his trend of packing a varied cast of big-name stars onto a single record. This week, ‘Ye recruited G.O.O.D. Music signee Pusha T, fellow MC/producer Swizz Beatz and rap luminary Jay-Z for repeat guest spots. Wu-Tang Clan ringleader RZA follows in the footsteps of Wu member Raekwon by dropping a G.O.O.D. Friday verse and newcomer Cyhi Da Prynce makes an appearance. ‘Ye tweeted Friday evening (September 24) that, unlike his recent free track “Lord Lord Lord,” which surfaced Saturday morning , G.O.O.D. Friday followers could expect a new song to kick off the weekend. “Good Friday actually coming on time this week!” he wrote . “We do this for our culture!” “So Appalled” also differs from the soulful instrumentation and introspective lyricism of “Lord” on several fronts. Accompanied by gruesome artwork of a nude woman splayed on a white surface with blood streaming from her mouth, the song has a testy, restless vibe with midtempo rhythms and ominous shuddering strings. Swizzy sets the track’s tone with ad-libs such as “one hand in the air, if you don’t really care” as West follows with bars like “We above the law, we don’t give a f— ’bout y’all/ I got dogs that’ll chew a f—ing hole through the wall.” Jay takes jabs at ankle-biting MCs, launching his verse with, “How should I begin this?/ I’m just so offended/ How am I even mentioned by these f—in’ beginners?/ I’m so appalled/ I might buy the mall/ Just to show n—as how much more I have in store.” Hov spends most of his bars deconstructing the hate that surrounds outsize fame but poses the question, “Would you rather be underpaid or overrated?” Push is up next with his own views on reaching the top, spitting, “Success is what you make it/ Take it how it come/ A half a mill in 20s like a billion where I’m from.” Cyhi holds his own among an intimidating roster of established MCs with lines like “If god had an iPod, I’d be on his playlist” and “Thou shalt not hate, kid/ My movement is like the civil rights, I’m Ralph David/ Abernathy, so call my lady Rosa Parks/ I am nothing like them n—as, baby those are marks.” RZA comes right in as Cyhi steps back, nearly clipping the end of his verse with bellows of “f—in’ ridiculous” riding out the track with rhymes like “Cars for the Mrs. and furs for the mistress/ You know that sh– is f—in’ ridiculous.” How do you like Kanye West’s “So Appalled”? Rick Ross On Keeping Number Of Songs On Teflon Don To A Minimum

‘Let’s trim the fat off a little bit and give them some rich street music,’ Ross says of the album, which was released today. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Rick Ross had a very clear and concise idea of what he wanted to do with his LP Teflon Don . He was inspired in part by some of the all-time classic albums he’s loved throughout his life — Nas’ Illmatic, Bobby Brown’s Don’t Be Cruel, Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Each of those albums kept its track listing at fewer than a dozen songs, but every one of those songs was timeless. When he was done recording Teflon several weeks ago, Ross brought the idea of only having 11 songs on his LP to Island/Def Jam Chairman L.A. Reid. “He was like, ‘It’s gotta be the right 11 records if it’s gonna be 11 records,’ ” Ross recalled. “I said, ‘That’s exactly why I’m doing it. It’s only a few artists that for one, would take that chance when it’s common to do 15, 16. We all know that you don’t like the 15, 16, 17. You really like the dope eight or the dope five. Or dope seven.’ I said, ‘Let’s trim the fat off a little bit and give them some rich street music.’ ” Teflon Don was released Tuesday (July 20), but Ross has been getting a plethora of acclaim since it leaked about a week ago. Songs from the LP that surfaced earlier than that, such as “Tears of Joy,” “Aston Martin Music” and “Maybach Music III,” have also been widely embraced. None has been talked about more than his collaboration with Jay-Z, “Free Mason.” Young Hov tackles the rumors of his allegiance to the Illuminati and Satan, authoring a strong candidate for verse of the year. “I know if I’m on a record with Jay-Z, not only are my rhymes gonna be on point, not only is the flow gonna be intact, but the way I say the words … The title of the record, the meaning of the record, is the title big enough for the expectations of this collaboration? A lot of people were like, ‘Wow, that’s what you gonna title the record?’ I’m like, ‘Why not?’ That’s what hip-hop’s about. Let’s get to the point. It’s so much speculation, so many whispers coming out of the sewers. Why not do a record and call it ‘Free Mason’ and we do what we do on it and they’ll know when they hear it. The title may throw them off, but it’s a good thing. They gotta hear it, and when they listen to it, everything that’s running through their minds, it’ll be answered. That was the whole idea when I brought it to [Jay].” Ross traveled with Jay on some dates on the Blueprint 3 tour several months ago and presented Hov with almost the complete package in hopes of securing a collaboration. “I knew the way to get that was to bring him the idea, my verse, everything, the whole picture in front of him,” the Bawse said. “He was listening to my verse. I said one particular word and when he heard the words ‘free mason’ — at that point we hadn’t titled it — but when he heard it … I saw his facial expression, like, ‘Yeah. I been meaning to [address this].’ When I backed the beat up, he came in and he was so direct. ” ‘N—as couldn’t do nothing with me, so they put the devil on me. …’ I felt it because it’s like when you are that great, and you’re so successful, some people just can’t imagine that. It’s reality. It’s real, people! He was straight to the point, like, ‘Damn. That’s what you gotta say to bring me down now? I’m so successful that you almost gotta credit the devil for this success.’ When you think about it, it’s really sad for the people that think that way. So it was like, ‘Wow.’ I was just happy I had the cojones to come with that idea and say ‘This what it is homie.’ Soon as he heard it, he was like, boom, let’s go in. He got straight to the point and did it in the greatest of ways.” Related Artists Rick Ross (Hip-Hop) Jay-Z

Game Talks Beanie Sigel Verse, Insists He Didn’t Dis Drake

‘Beans, he sounds hungry, like he ain’t have his hair braided in six years,’ he tells Mixtape Daily of R.E.D. Album track. Game Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive For the most part, you will never get an MC to admit that he did a song with another spitter, and that spitter’s rhymes were so ferocious he had to go back to the drawing board to pen another verse. Rick Ross Recruits T.I. For His ‘Masterpiece,’ ‘Maybach Music 3’

‘I feel like the verse he spits on this record may be one of his hardest verses,’ Ross says. By Jayson Rodriguez Rick Ross Rick Ross’ “Maybach Music” featuring Jay-Z was one of the standout tracks from his sophomore set, Trilla. The Miami rapper upped the star power on the sequel, recruiting Lil Wayne and Kanye West to join him on “Maybach Music 2.” Now, to complete the trilogy, Ross, is connecting with yet another heavyweight MC. “I had to do it real big with someone I never collaborated with before: Tip,” Ross told “Sucker Free” host DJ Envy of T.I. “We got a full orchestra, a live orchestra from the strings on down. It’s gonna be a masterpiece. It felt good to work with him. He just came home and got in the lab. He heard the music, he knows the legacy of part one and part two. And I feel like the verse he spits on this record may be one of his hardest verses. It’s that ‘Rubber Band Man’ flow.” In the past, Ross spoke out in a lighthearted manner about not being included on Tip’s “Swagga Like Us” record , which also included Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne. “How could you forget about me?” he asked in his own freestyle over the M.I.A.-sampled track. “I feel like everything happens in time,” Ross told MTV News about the omission. “What T.I. had on his plate and what he had going on, I think that was the roster for him to put together. He had to make it as big as he could. It’s Paper Trail. He had to make it explosive. … The way I make music, I’m hater-free. So I don’t have egos. I’m a fan.” Ross is putting the finishing touches on his next album, Teflon Don, which is slated for release next month. What are you expecting from “Maybach Music 3”? Let us know in the comments! Lloyd Banks Talks Up His ‘Beamer, Benz Or Bentley’ Remix Team

Jadakiss, Ludacris, Yo Gotti and The-Dream are all featured on the new version. By Shaheem Reid Lloyd Banks Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Lloyd Banks ‘ “Beamer, Benz or Bentley,” featuring Juelz Santana, came out of nowhere to be a smash. The song has been such a favorite that artists from Eminem to Joell Ortiz have freestyled on the beat. Banks is grateful for the love from his peers, and last week, he dropped the official remix with a slew of teammates. “Shout-out to everybody who did the record prior to the official remix coming out,” Banks said on Friday from Panama. The remix features Jadakiss, Ludacris, Yo Gotti and The-Dream. “The fans, I think they wanted to hear something new, something fresh,” Banks said. “While I was on tour, the international tour, I kept in communication with all those artists. Shout out to Jada, shout out to Luda, Yo Gotti, The-Dream. I had everybody’s verse except for Dream. That was the last thing that came in. Those were all people I respect and people I would like to work with outside the remix. It ain’t really hard to decide who’s gonna be on it.” Banks also switched up the much-rapped-on beat, making the “Beamer, Benz or Bentley” remix almost an entirely different song. “I had about six different beats,” Banks said. “Just sitting with 50 [Cent], he brought it to my attention to try and change the element a little bit. Being that already 40 or 50 artists already rapped on the [original] beat, it’s kinda hard to decipher what’s the real remix. If they all rapping to the same beat, you can just patch it with the other 40, 50 artists and make a mega-mix and not know what the official remix is. The beat change lets people know off the rip ‘This is the official remix.’ I’m pretty sure they’ll be blending the original beat in with it anyway.” Here, Banks breaks down how each artist came to appear on his remix: The-Dream : “I had spoke to couple of different R&B artists. That’s an element that I think helps. Everybody wants to be a part of that record. I don’t think it has to be kept to one lane. I’ve heard Spanish versions to [the original], Jamaican versions to it, Haitian versions to it. I got a feel of what the melodic feel would bring to the record. The-Dream, he was already doing [his own version]. Once I caught wind of it, I was like, ‘Yo, let me get that. Don’t put that out.’ ” Yo Gotti : “Yo Gotti, I had spoke to him directly. I spoke to him a couple times, told him I wanted to get something done with him. Before that opportunity presented itself, the [song] bubbled all down south in Memphis. I was like, ‘Let’s get Gotti on it.’ He has the street in a chokehold. We’ll probably have more records come in the future also. He definitely has a lane, man, and I wish him luck.” Ludacris : “Luda, that’s the homie, man. Just through that, [it] wasn’t really nothing [difficult]. Luda is out there bubbling, platinum plaques and all that, #1 records, where I’m trying to take it. Shout-out to Luda and shout-out to [Disturbing Tha Peace co-founder] Chaka [Zulu] for making that happen. Jadakiss : “That wasn’t nothing. That wasn’t nothing but a phone call. I spoke to him a few times about the record. I had his verse for a minute. I had his verse while I was overseas and everyone was leaking their versions. We built the beat around his verse. He adds that extra, that lyrical element, that New York City vibe to it. I didn’t want to stand alone on that joint.” What do you think about the “Beamer, Benz or Bentley” remix lineup? Gudda Gudda Recalls Getting ‘Willy Wonka’ From Lil Wayne

‘Right before [Weezy] went to jail, he was like, ‘Man, you can have that,’ ‘ Young Money member tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Gudda Gudda and Lil Wayne Photo: Young Money/Cash Money Breaking Through: Gudda Gudda Young Money’s Gudda Gudda has a new video on the way for “Willy Wonka,” but he has no idea what the clip will look like. “We shot a green-screen video,” Gudda told Mixtape Daily about the production, which was shot before co-star Lil Wayne went to prison . “It was almost like how [Young Money’s] ‘Roger That’ was. I don’t know what they’re doing to it. I’m kinda lost. “It wasn’t my video at first,” Gudda continued. “All I know is that we shot green screen. I don’t know if I’mma need to shoot more scenes on it. I didn’t see the final cut. If I don’t like the way it is, I’m gonna pay for somebody to shoot more scenes for me and make it right.” “Willy Wonka” was originally slated to be on Weezy’s upcoming Tha Carter IV, but the YM founder passed it on to his good friend. “[DJ] Ill Will sent me the beat,” Gudda recalled. “He didn’t do nothing on the night I played it for him. I laid my verse on it that night. He came back the next day, the engineer pulled it up like, ‘Look what Gudda did to the beat.’ By the time I came back to the studio, [Wayne] had already laid his verse on it. The song was done. “I didn’t know what he was using it for. Ill Will sent it to me for my mixtape. I already figured Wayne might want it. I was like, ‘If he wants it for his album, we gotta give it to him.’ So basically, he wanted it at first. We shot the video for it. And right before [Weezy] went to jail, he was like, ‘Man, you can have that sh–. Go ‘head, man, get you. Put that sh– out and go stupid with it. Take the song, take everything.’ He gave me all that sh– right before he went to jail.” Gudda said he communicates with Wayne frequently. “I talk to him a few times a week,” Gudda said. “He’s doing real good, on some real sh–. He’s in there being positive, reading all his fan mail. He’s trying to stay busy. He’s got a job in there. He’s good.” Weezy also appears on Gudda’s Back to Guddaville mixtape, dropping soon. The New Orleans MC opened up about the warm reception for his last street album. “When I put that Guddaville out [a few months ago], I ain’t never get a response like that since I been doing music,” he said. “It felt good, I was real humble. It makes wanna go in the studio ASAP. I started working on Back to Guddaville. I didn’t wanna leave that space. “This one is all originals,” he added. “I have nothing on nobody else’s track. All of it is originals. Of course, y’all gonna hear the ‘Willy Wonka’ joint with me and Wayne [and] ‘Small Thing to a Giant’ with me and Wayne. I got a joint called ‘Polo’; it’s crazy. I got a joint called ‘Lock My CEO Up’ featuring Waka Flocka [Flame]. That’s gonna be one of the hardest songs this year. I promise. I put things about Wayne in my verse. Waka put things about Gucci [Mane] in his verse.” As a bonus for the song, Gudda said he’ll feature the recording of an actual phone conversation between himself and Wayne from Rikers Island , where he’s been since April, as well as a phone call that captures Gucci calling Waka from prison. Jay Rock, Juelz Santana and various members of the Young Money squad will also cameo on the new mixtape. Gudda said he’s excited about his sequel and grateful about the momentum that the original Guddaville tape has sparked for him. He performs material from the tape at shows, several times a week. “It feels good,” Gudda said of his growing fanbase. “I been patient for a long time. People know I been with Wayne for a minute. Me and him been through a lot. It feels good to know that I been patient and I’m getting my just due. I ain’t all the way there yet, but I’m making some money. I’m making a lot more money than other n—as. [Fans] hit me and tell me they … sorry. They say, ‘I’m sorry my n—a. I ain’t know you was that nice. I take it back.’ ” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .

Dru Hill Perform ‘Classic’ Set At New York’s Apollo Theater

‘You get the opportunity to see all the different layers and see how Dru Hill has evolved into the group we are today,’ Sisqo says. By Shaheem Reid Dru Hill perform at the Apollo Theater in New York on Wednesday Photo: Shahar Azran/ Getty Images Wednesday night (March 31) in New York, Dru Hill returned to familiar terrain: the Apollo Theater in Harlem. The group won Amateur Night back in the mid-’90s, but this time the group came back as seasoned professionals. Founders Sisqo , Nokio, Jazz and newcomer Tao began with a medley of the group’s greatest hits such as “Tell Me” and the remix to “Sleeping In My Bed,” with Sisqo doing the moonwalk across the stage. Dru’s set ended with a new song from their first album in eight years, InDRUpendence Day, due in May. “I like a record that we had all done called ‘Back to the Future,’ ” Sisqo told MTV News. “Basically, it’s a classic format of Dru Hill, where Jazz would sing a verse and the group is doing the harmony. Then I sing a verse. But I think it really showcases Tao being the group too. Jazz does his verse, I do my verse, Tao does his verse, then the group comes together. ” ‘Back to the Future,’ you get the opportunity to see all the different layers and see how Dru Hill has evolved into the group we are today,” he continued. “Plus, I like the concept. Even some of the young kids listening to music … may be listening to their parents who are saying music ain’t what it used to be — nobody sings no more. ‘Back to the Future’ kind of metaphorically touches on that too. That’s one of my favorites.” “I remember we used to ask each other, ‘How many kids are we gon’ have?’ ” Jazz sings. “I rememeber we used to make plans like, ‘I cook the food, you cut the grass.’ ” “Can we take it back to the way we were,” the group joins in on the chorus. “Back to every single time you saw him, you saw her/ Even though we try to stay away/ My heart is still in yesterday/ Let’s go back to you and me/ Like we s’pose to be/ Back to the future.” Are you looking forward to the new Dru Hill album? Lil Wayne Shouts Out Justin Bieber, Cory Gunz On Ustream

Weezy says Gunz is joining Young Money in one of several videos made before Monday’s sentencing. By Shaheem Reid Lil Wayne in his Ustream video Photo: ustream Lil Wayne should be touching down in New York City for his jail sentencing on Monday (March 8). In the morning, his videographer and photographer, DJ Scoob Doo , posted notice on Twitter that they were about to take off from Miami to the Big Apple. Scoob also put up photos of their private jet. On Friday night, Wayne again appeared in front of the cameras, via Ustream, using Young Money member Lil Twist’s account. Wayne, Scoob and Twist sat down for dinner at Weezy’s Miami mansion and went live around 8:45 p.m. ” Jay-Z had a concert at Madison Square Garden,” Wayne said to the viewers, recalling the show he attended the night after a courthouse fire delayed his sentencing . ” Jay-Z and Young Jeezy . I had an opportunity to go out there on Young Jeezy’s set and perform ‘I’m Goin In.’ It was surprise to the crowd because they didn’t know I was there. I was supposed to go in [to jail that day]. Nicki Minaj blessed the stage first on that ‘Bedrock.’ When I say blessed the stage, she blessed it. Looking immaculate. Then I came up there. “I just ran out there and performed,” he added. “After I performed, Drake came out there and performed his verse. They went extra bananas. Then Jeezy performed his verse. They went stupid. It was an amazing moment.” From there, Wayne went on to marvel at all the women responding to him on Ustream that said they wanted to have sex with him. The New Orleans superstar also gave a plethora of shout-outs to the viewers as well as to some of his famous friends. “Shout out my n—a Justin Bieber ,” he said, continuing his public conversation with the teen sensation. Wayne also revealed a new addition to his label of talented artists. “Shout out to my n—a Cory Gunz , about to be the newest member of the Young Money team.” A couple of years ago, Gunz answered the call from Wayne to lay a verse on “A Milli,” though Gunz’s rhymes never made it on the album. The two apparently ran into each other last week in Miami and talked about officially joining forces, but a formal deal has not yet been completed. Gunz tweeted over the weekend, “LOL. Young Money!!!!!!” Wayne, who has been tweeting frequently and posting other Ustreams over the weekend, is expected to be sentenced to a year in prison on gun possession charges. Lil Wayne Joins Young Jeezy Onstage During Jay-Z’s NYC Show

Weezy, who was supposed to be sentenced to prison Tuesday, was also joined by Young Money’s Drake and Nicki Minaj. By Shaheem Reid Lil Wayne (file) Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Jay-Z has said that Madison Square Garden should be called “The House That Hovie Built,” but on Tuesday night (March 2), Young Jeezy was the one who startled the sold-out Blueprint 3 Tour crowd by pulling the trump card that tore the roof off. The Snowman called out Young Money artists Nicki Minaj and Drake, as well as the label’s CEO, Lil Wayne. Jeezy came out about 45 minutes into Jay-Z’s set to perform “Real as It Gets.” Hov then turned the reins over to Jeezy, who threw out a few of his street-approved rhymes, like his verse on Shawty Lo’s “Dey Know.” Jeezy told the crowd that his friend Lil Wayne was supposed to go to jail that day , but a courthouse fire delayed his sentencing on weapons charges once again. Jeezy said he wanted to bring someone out to dedicate a record to him. Nicki Minaj then came out and did her verse from “Bedrock.” After the song, Jeezy told Nicki to stay, and the beat for “I’m Goin’ In” came on. Lil Wayne then emerged from the mini-stage where Jay’s Roc Boys band was playing and jumped on the main stage with Jeezy. The concertgoers — who were already on their feet — gave the New Orleans native a phenomenal response. Wayne’s face lit up as he rapped his verse. Drake then came out, breaking the night’s all-black dress code by wearing all white instead. The crowd gave Drizzy loud approval during his verse. Young Jeezy closed the song out, and all three men yelled the chorus: “I’m goin’ in, I’m goin’ in, and I’mma go hard!” “Jeezy, you a real n—a,” Wayne said, saluting the Snowman. “We with you 100 percent,” Young told Wayne. Jeezy told the fans to make some noise for Wayne and Young Money, which they were already doing. From there, the Atlanta rapper dug into his catalog with thumpers such as “Crazy World,” “Go Crazy” and “Go Getta.” Jeezy closed out his set by bringing out another guest, Akon, for “Soul Survivor.” Related Videos Lil Wayne’s ‘Road To Rikers’ Related Photos Lil Wayne Heads To Rikers Island Related Artists Lil Wayne Jay-Z
