Clarksville TN flooding pictures

The five deaths in Tennessee were related to the storm, but the exact causes were not yet known. The Leaf Chronicle in Clarksville reported that two of the victims were swept away in a rain-swollen creek in Stewart County, about 65 miles northwest of Nashville. They came a day after a tornado in Arkansas killed a woman and injured about two dozen people. After the worst of the rain on Saturday night, Heidt said no more fatalities had yet been reported in Tennessee. Interstate 24 southeast of

Living Downstream links environment and cancer

There was once a village along a river. The people who lived there were very kind. These residents, according to parable, began noticing increasing numbers of drowning people caught in the river’s swift current. And so they went to work devising ever more elaborate technologies to resuscitate them. So preoccupied were these heroic villagers with rescue and treatment that they never thought to look upstreams to see who was pushing the victims in. Living Upstream is a walk up that river. Author, environmentalist and cancer survivor Sandra Steingraber, Ph.D., was raised in a family that seemed prone to cancer. She was diagnosed with bladder cancer at age 20. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when Steingraber was in high school. Her aunt died of the same form of cancer that Sandra had, and many of ther close family members also struggled with the disease. But there is no question that cancer does not run in Steingraber’s genes—she was adopted. Clearly, this family was struggling with toxic influences surrounding them in their daily lives. Living Downstream , first published in 1997, both tells the tale of Steingraber’s ongoing battle against cancer and her life’s work linking the effects of our toxic environment on cancer and our health. A documentary film adaptation of the book coincides with last month’s release of an updated edition of the book, tracking recent scientific revelations in the connection between a healthy environment and human health. Find a public screening of Living Downstream , the movie, or purchase a DVD at LivingDownstream.com , and follow Steingraber’s ongoing search for answers and journey of cleaning our environment of carcinogenic influences in Walking Upstream . Gerald Imes Admits Molesting Mo’Nique, Apologizes to Sister on Oprah

Gerald Imes, Mo’Nique’s “monster” older brother, has come clean. After decades of denying allegations, Imes finally owned up to horrific claims made by Mo’Nique – that he was her childhood molester – to Oprah Winfrey. “I’m here today to first acknowledge what I’ve been denial for for 37 years, and that is I did assault and inappropriately touch my sister in manners that were uncomfortable for her,” he said. “And for that, I apologize .” “I’m humbly sorry that those actions had taken place.” Mo’Nique’s parents also appeared on the show, although the Precious star herself did not participate. She did give her blessing for the sit-down to take place, saying she hoped her family’s story would help other victims of abuse. Gerald Imes, Mo’Nique’s older brother, has come clean . As for Gerald Imes, he confirmed Mo’Nique’s timeline: Abusing her between ages 7-11. Mo’Nique did not tell her parents until she was 15, and only di so then after a violent incident occurred that neither she nor Imes will discuss. Imes says he only recently realized how wrong he was. “I accepted it as being the norm,” he said, describing his own history with drug and sexual abuse. “The drugs weren’t an excuse. They just allowed me and afforded me the opportunity to do the things in the back of my mind.” Hauntingly, he adds: “Most of the time, the abuse I did with my sister took place while she was asleep [or] the appearance that she was asleep.” He said his decision to come forward was watching his sister’s Academy Award-winning performance in Precious and the all-too-familiar storyline. Later in life, Imes was convicted of molesting someone and sentenced to 12 years in prison. Mo’Nique will not allow him around her twin sons. As for why Gerald chose now to come forward, he hopes it will help rekindle his relationship with his sister: “I can only hope by coming forth today, since I couldn’t reach out to her, that … somehow… we can come back together.” “I’m sorry that it happened. I am so sorry that it happened to you, and that I was the perpetrator, the one that did it to you. However, I understand your pain. I, too, was there. Now let’s share this together and move on.'”

In Memoriam: American Idol’s Newest Losers Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens

Idol ‘s double-homicide last night had the air of an overdue spring cleaning. It was as if the voting public said, “What’s this bland 17-year-old girl doing stocked with the linens? I’ll give her to Amvets.” Nonetheless, we did lose two “talented” (read: in tune) vocalists somewhere in Adam Lambert’s green smoke last night. They deserve a proper eulogy like any other victims of the Urbanator .

Kayden Nguyen: Serious About Steven Seagal Lawsuit

Despite a threat from Steven Seagal’s lawyer, Kayden Nguyen is undeterred in her lawsuit against the actor. Marty Singer, the attorney for Seagal, says Nguyen’s sexual harassment suit against his client “is in direct violation of the terms of the confidentiality agreement” she signed in February, after she earned a job with Seagal. Nguyen alleges this job was advertised as an executive assistant position… but Seagal instead placed Kayden in a compromising position on her first day in the office, grabbing her breasts and feeling for her crotch. If true, it was the actor’s ugliest behavior since everything he did in 2001’s Exit Wounds . Singer has threatened to seek lawyer fees, costs and sanctions from Nguyen if she goes through with the lawsuit – but her attorney isn’t budging. Replied William Waldo: “Please tell Steven Seagal two things. First, the cheap shot threats that might have intimidated other victims and their lawyers don’t phase me. Save your ink. Second, Ms. Nguyen’s claims are not going away. Five other victims called me yesterday.” Seagal has denied the accusations , while his hilarious reality show ( Steven Seagal Lawman ) has been placed on hiatus.

Republican Totally Wants In On This Violent Threat Scare Trend (Updated) [Me Too]

As the hysterical rhetoric surrounding health care reform escalates, many lawmakers are reporting receiving violent threats. Like Eric Cantor , Republican Minority Whip, who says someone totally shot his office , with a gun. [Update: Police confirm an attack on Cantor’s airspace!] Cantor is mad that Democrats are scoring political points by being the victims of actual vandalism and receiving violent threats from crazy people riled up by the out-of-line apocalyptic rhetoric of Republicans and their media allies. So he’s like, hey people are totally threatening to kill me too, so shut up. “I’ve received threats since I assumed elected office, not only because of my position but also because I’m Jewish,” Cantor said. “Any suggestion that a leader in this body would incite threats… is akin to saying I would endanger myself, my wife or my children.” Cantor said he has also received threatening e-mails but will not release them lest they spur any further hostility. By contrast, Cantor said he has “deep concerns” that some in the Democratic party — particularly Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and Tim Kaine, chairman of the Democratic National Committee — are “dangerously fanning the flames by suggesting these incidents be used as a political weapon.” Yes. Right. By publicizing the violent hysteria that’s been whipped up by cynical manipulators of the forces of popular outrage, Democrats are in fact fanning the flames. Just like that guy with Parkinsons was totally asking for it by having Parkinsons and supporting health care reform in public. Cantor also claims that a bullet was shot through the window of his Richmond, VA office this week. Let’s just get the obvious arguments out of the way first: liberals are not the ones carrying firearms to angry public demonstrations. In fact, liberals are not attending angry public demonstrations, because right now liberals don’t actually have anything to be angry about. Liberals just won! Why the hell would they be angrily threatening anyone? If someone did shoot Eric Cantor’s window in Richmond, Virginia, this week, it is exponentially more likely that it was a Tea Party sympathizer than some Obama-voting NoVa yuppie enraged by Cantor’s attempts to obstruct legislation in the House (which he’s failed at again and again and again). An angry, armed liberal would not shoot the House minority whip. They would be more likely to shoot Harry Reid. Or Bart Stupak, who no longer has any friends on any end of the political spectrum. (And honestly—if this theoretical armed and dangerous libtard isn’t shooting some turncoat Democrat, he’s much more likely to go after a right-wing media figure than some loser GOP congressman.) It’s the pissed-off raging teabaggers who are furious with the Republicans right now, for failing to stop the thing they promised they would stop. But we are not even going to blame some stupid Teabagger for shooting Eric Cantor’s office. Because no one gives a shit about Eric Cantor. No one is shooting him or threatening him. He is just another asshole. Meanwhile, in reality: Bart Stupak released the actual tapes of the insane and violent threats he got from right-wing (pro-life!) nuts. Louise Slaughter and Gabrielle Giffords had their offices actually vandalized, for real. (And Slaughter got some crazy voicemail about snipers.) James Clyburn got a fax of a noose. Some asshole teabagger attempted to post the home address of Rep. Tom Perriello on the internet, so that people could harrass him. But he posted the address of Perriello’s brother. And then someone went to Perrillo’s brother’s house and cut the gas line to his grill. Why do Democrats keep fanning the flames by telling people about these things? Sorry Republicans, I know playing the victim is the one thing you guys love doing even more than attacking actual victims of things like hate crimes and economic disadvantages, but no one wants to shoot any of you. [ Photo via Getty Images ] Update: Hah. A Richmond Police detective was assigned to the case. A preliminary investigation shows that a bullet was fired into the air and struck the window in a downward direction, landing on the floor about a foot from the window. The round struck with enough force to break the windowpane but did not penetrate the window blinds. There was no other damage to the room, which is used occasionally for meetings by the congressman. Yep, just some health care reform-supporting enraged loony lefitst, wandering around Richmond, Virginia, firing guns in the air near buildings where the House Minority Whip has offices.

Appeals for calm after Nigeria sectarian slaughter

JOS, Nigeria — Nigerian troops were patrolling villages near the northern city of Jos Tuesday after the massacre of more than 500 Christians there that sparked international shock and outrage. But survivors of the latest wave of inter-ethnic violence, in which women and children were hacked to death or burned alive in their homes, denounced the authorities for having failed to intervene in time. Relatives of the dead meanwhile attended funerals Monday for the victims of the three-hour orgy of violence in three Christian villages close to the northern city of Jos. Related article: Survivors wail as children, women buried in Nigeria Witnesses have blamed the massacre on members of the mainly Muslim Fulani ethnic group, and according to media reports Muslims villagers were warned two days before attack via text messages to their phones. The security forces said they had detained 95 suspects in the violence. “We have over 500 killed in three villages and the survivors are busy burying their dead,” said state information commissioner Gregory Yenlong. “People were attacked with axes, daggers and cutlasses — many of them children, the aged and pregnant women.” Around 200 people were being treated in hospital, said the information ministry. Much of the violence was centred around the village of Dogo Nahawa, where gangs set fire to straw-thatched mud huts as they went on their rampage. The explosion of violence was just the latest between rival ethnic and religious groups. In January, 326 people died in clashes in and around Jos, according to police although rights activists put the overall toll at more than 550. “The attack is yet another jihad and provocation,” the Plateau State Christian Elders Consultative Forum (PSCEF) said. It had taken the army two hours to react from the time a distress call was put through and “the attackers had finished their job and left”, they added. Acting President Goodluck Jonathan has already sacked his chief security advisor. John Onaiyekan, the archbishop of the capital Abuja, told Vatican Radio that the violence was rooted not in religion but in social, economic and tribal differences. “It is a classic conflict between pastoralists and farmers, except that all the Fulani are Muslims and all the Berom are Christians,” he said. Fulani are mainly nomadic cattle rearers while Beroms are traditionally farmers. Locals said Sunday's attacks were the result of a feud which had been first ignited by a theft of cattle and then fuelled by deadly reprisals. Rights activists also said the slaughter appeared to be revenge for the January attacks, in which mainly Muslims were killed. The Vatican led a wave of outrage with spokesman Federico Lombardi expressing the Roman Catholic Church's “sadness” at the “horrible acts of violence”. UN chief Ban Ki-moon told reporters he was “deeply concerned”, but added: “I appeal to all concerned to exercise maximum restraint. “Nigeria's political and religious leaders should work together to address the underlying causes and to achieve a permanent solution to the crisis in Jos.” US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged “all parties to exercise restraint.” She added: “The Nigerian government should ensure that the perpetrators of acts of violence are brought to justice under the rule of law and that human rights are respected as order is restored.” Survivors said the attackers were able to separate the Fulanis from members of the rival Berom group by chanting 'nagge,' the Fulani word for cattle. Those who failed to respond in the same language were hacked to death. Witnesses said armed gangs had scared people out of their homes by firing into the air but most of the killings were the result of machete attacks. “We were caught unawares… and as we tried to escape, the Fulani who were already waiting slaughtered many of us,” said Dayop Gyang, of Dogo Nahawa. Gbong Gwon Jos, a Muslim resident of Dogo Nahawa, told The Nation daily he received advanced warnings of the attacks. “I got a text message about movement of the people.” Witnesses told Human Rights Watch that some of the attackers were former residents of the villages who had fled previous inter-community conflicts. “I recognized a few of [the attackers'] voices,” one witness told them. Another witness told the group many of the attackers had their heads wrapped in cloth to make it hard to identify them, and that some had cried “Allahu Akbar” (God is Great). Amid continuing tension Monday, Christian youths set upon a Muslim journalist covering one of the mass burials near Jos, an AFP reporter said. Police had to pull him to safety and he needed treatment for a broken nose. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5j7Ka7dhD48QseiCShJ-RhYxI6Exg added by: Toni801
