I didn’t watch the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards last night, I can’t spend four hours watching morons in stupid outfits pat each other on the back for their computer generated singing abilities, so I’m a little surprised by these pictures of Britney Spears . Not because she looks pretty damn good, clean and sober and showing off an amazing little booty…. But because she’s holding a couple of awards. What the hell could she have won? Biggest let down? more pictures of Britney Spears here
‘I wanted to stop her’ from using drugs, legendary crooner tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Tony Bennett and Amy Winehouse record “Body and Soul” together in 2010 Photo: Sony One of the most moving moments at the 2011 Video Music Awards Sunday night was the tribute to Amy Winehouse , who died earlier this summer. The look back at the 27-year-old’s indelible influence included memories from Russell Brand and Tony Bennett, followed by a performance of “Valerie” by Bruno Mars. When MTV News caught up with the legendary Bennett immediately after the tribute, he spoke fondly of Winehouse’s incredible talent and their time together recording their duet (and the “Rehab” singer’s final recording), “Body and Soul.” Bennett then spoke of how tragic he thought her death was, saying that he wished he’d been able to pass along a few words of wisdom before it was too late. See photos of Amy Winehouse’s life and career. “I can say this now — I didn’t want to say it on the show,” Bennett said. “What I wanted to do, I wanted to stop her, I wanted to tell her that many years ago I was naughty also with some drugs.” But, Bennett revealed, a quote from a friend stuck with him for life. “Woody Allen’s manager at the time [Jack Rollins] said he knew Lenny Bruce,” Bennett explained, recalling a conversation about the boundary-breaking comedian and satirist who died young of a drug overdose. “[Rollins] said one sentence that changed my life: He said, ‘He sinned against his talent.’ I wanted to tell her that and I had to leave because we were touring all over the world making this album, and I never got a chance to do it. “My son called up and said she died, and I couldn’t believe that I didn’t get that message to her,” Bennett added sadly. The cause of Winehouse’s death is still undetermined , but her family released a statement last week saying that toxicology tests found no illegal substances in her body. Hashtags #whatwillgagawear and #DemiYouAreBeautiful also made an impact on Sunday. By Kara Klenk Lady Gaga at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Just as predicted, the 2011 Video Music Awards generated even more buzz than last year, with over 3 million tweets sent from 8 p.m. ET at the start of the pre-show until the end of the West Coast broadcast, 11 p.m. PT. Which makes perfect sense when we’re talking about a show in which Selena Gomez interviewed Justin Bieber , Britney and Gaga almost made out , and, oh yeah, Beyonc
Lady Gaga’s male alter ego even got fresh with Brit after her VMA tribute. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by James Montgomery Britney Spears and Lady Gaga as Jo Calderone backstage at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Getty Images On Sunday night at the 2011 Video Music Awards , Lady Gaga ‘s alter ego Jo Calderone met the princess of pop herself, Britney Spears . Gaga, in full drag as Calderone , and Spears had a bit of a VMA romance, sharing kind words — and even swapping spit. “It was interesting, her character,” Spears later told MTV News about the encounter, even dishing how the kiss between the two took place. “We got onstage and we felt it out.” Spears, of course, has already kissed a famous pop star on the VMA stage, when she and Madonna locked lips back in 2003. And it’s that kind of free spirit that Calderone noted in his speech about the singer. “She taught us all how to be fearless, and the industry wouldn’t be the same without her,” Calderone said when he not only kicked off the tribute to the star, but also later presented her with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. After a troupe of dancers, who performed dance routines to everything from ” … Baby One More Time” and “Crazy” to “Toxic” and “Do Somethin’,” left the stage, Calderone and Spears came face to face, and lips to lips. Although Spears seemed fine with the initial kiss, when he tried to make a few more advances, Spears rebuffed him with a big smile on her face. He took it like a gentleman, adding, “I don’t want Gaga to get pissed.” So was Gaga completely Calderone the whole time? “She’s in full character,” Spears later added. “Yes, definitely.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards have wrapped, but the real action is just getting started! Jennifer Lawrence introduced a suspenseful, heavily forested preview of The Hunger Games before MTV’ s Video Music Awards in a pre-taped segment from North Carolina, where the adaptation of Suzanne Collins’s bestseller is still being shot. And speaking of being shot: In the clip, Lawrence takes aim with a fiery arrow and artfully dodges some woodsy danger. Indeed, she’s the new goddess of the hunt. Watch after the jump.
Tunechi delivered a scorching combo of ‘How to Love’ and ‘John’ to end the show on Sunday night. By Alvin Blanco Lil Wayne performs at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Getty Images Lil Wayne closes out a hectic week that included a skateboarding mishap and a Jay-Z dis by proving he’s just as much rock star as he is rap star. Weezy F. closed out the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards with a scorching performance of his hits “How to Love” and “John.” “You know, he always comes different: One day he’s a rock star, one day he’s a skater; he’s singing R&B. I think we can expect a little bit of everything in this performance,” Weezy’s musical director Gil Smith told MTV News last week. He wasn’t kidding. YMCMB wunderkind Drake introduced Weezy, who kicked off his performance singing his hit rap ballad “How to Love,” with Auto-tune effects added to his microphone. Backed by a live band, Lil Tunechi eased down the stage sporting a black top hat, snug-fitting animal prints pants, a white V-neck T-shirt and red Vans. After showing off his vocal chops and finishing the first verse of “How to Love,” Weezy then took off the hat and shirt, put back on his sunglasses, and after uttering, “Ladies and gentleman, my name is Lil Wayne,” screamed and launched into “John.” The band replaced the original instrumental with the familiar groove of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man,” giving the performance a decidedly hard-rock turn as the rapper hyperactively jumped around the stage. After kicking his verse for “John,” which features Rick Ross, Weezy ran into the crowd and greeted Rozay. Back onstage, he picked up a white and black guitar and told the crowd to put their hands in the air (along with plenty of expletives) and played a few notes, before removing the instrument and slamming it to the stage. ‘I feel like I am doing something right when I sing that song,’ Perry says when accepting her Moonman. By Kelley Carter Katy Perry accepts the Video Of The Year award at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Getty Images Capping her most successful year yet, Katy Perry racked up the top award at Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards ‘ Video of the Year for “Firework.” The singer — dressed in a cartoonish, multicolored dress with a square-shaped headband-like contraption on her head — kissed her hubby, actor Russell Brand , and hugged a few people, including Adele, whom she was up against, before heading to the stage to accept her award from actress Katie Holmes. “Oh my goodness! Thank you so much,” Perry said. “This has been a night of firsts. This is my second Moonman. I’m very proud of the song it stands for, which is ‘Firework.’ I feel like I am doing something right when I sing that song. So thanks to everyone who helped to create it.” Click for photos of Katy’s VMA red carpet looks. She thanked her team and then continued, after the crowd simmered down a bit, “To all of y’all out there! Thank you so much! To all my fans! And last but not least, my husband!” The cameras focused on Brand just as she was thanking him, and he was visibly emotional. Perry was the most nominated artist this year, with nine nods total. She ultimately collected two for the evening, including an award for Best Collaboration on “E.T.” with Kanye West. She also competed for Best Female Video, Best Art Direction, Best Direction, Best Editing, Best Special Effects and Best Cinematography. Gaga’s Jo Calderone alter ego introduced a dance tribute to Brit’s best videos. By John Mitchell Britney Spears and Lady Gaga on stage at the 2011 VMAs Photo: MTV It’s only fitting for one princess of pop to fete another. And that’s what happened when Lady Gaga stepped out on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards to pay tribute to Britney Spears with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Well, kind of. Gaga took the stage to honor Spears still in character as her male alter ego Jo Calderone, which she’d taken on for her show-opening performance earlier in the night. And that made things pretty interesting. Calderone opened by calling Spears an inspiration, saying, “She taught us all how to be fearless, and the industry wouldn’t be the same without her.” Calderone then went on to get a little personal about Spears. He told the audience he used to put up posters of the pop star on his bedroom wall and be inspired in non-musical ways. It was a weird moment, but Calderone is a young guy of the right generation — a generation that would indeed have posters of Britney Spears on his/her wall. There’s a reason, after all, she was being awarded the Vanguard Award. The tribute then turned into exactly what any great tribute to this particular diva should be: a dance party. Spears is known as one of the biggest dance pop artists of her generation, and accordingly, dancers wearing Britney’s most famous video looks took the stage to get down to her biggest hits, from “Baby One More Time” and “Crazy” to “Toxic” and “Do Somethin’.” By the time the sequence dissolved into a full-stage dance-off to Spears’ recent smash “Till The World Ends,” children also wearing Spears’ myriad costumes popped up on stage alongside their grown-up dancing counterparts. It was a fitting way to show the impact Spears’ music has had. From kids to adults, everyone knows and loves Britney. As the performance ended, Gaga-as-Calderone again grabbed the spotlight to introduce the pop star and did so with the kind of bravado that carried him through his monologue earlier in the show. “Everybody, stand the f— up,” Calderone demanded. Looking better than ever and glowing from all the praise, Spears then took the stage. Calderone certainly liked what he saw, eying the singer before stepping forward for a semi-awkward stare-down. But Gaga, er, Calderone eventually got what he wanted: a quick kiss from the one and only Britney Spears. He wanted more, however, but alas, it just wasn’t going to happen. Being a classy guy, Calderone brushed off Britney’s dismissal of his advances with a cool, “I don’t want Gaga to get pissed.” Spears seemed thankful for the prize but used her time to shine the spotlight on another artist: Beyonc
