Marais Stool

This vintage stool was designed by Xavier Pauchard back in 1934. Boasting industrial flair and that steampunk-oomph it was crafted from sheet steel and built to last. The Marais Stool actually has a bit of history as it was long used as a bribe by breweries to get the bars and brasserie employees to carry the heavy kegs of beer in exchange for a stool. $300 . Larry King LIVE

When I was told that I would be interviewed on “Larry King Live” as part of my book tour, I was stunned. I’m one of the millions of Americans who grew up watching him host his iconic show on CNN. In person, the vintage microphone, trademark suspenders, and “Lite-Brite” world map appear just as you would expect. I was thankful to have had a full week of doing interviews under my belt before sitting down with Mr. King. Due to CNN rules, we weren’t able to take cameras into the studio, but they were nice enough to provide these great screen shots for the site. Song of the Day: “I Live in L.A.” by CoCo B’s

The Bachelorette Recap: 100 Percent Chance of Craig M. Being a Colossal Douche

After weeding out the total nut jobs on The Bachelorette season premiere, Ali Fedotowsky got down to business last night and actually went on dates with the guys. Not to say some loons didn’t make it through week one to spark more drama, particularly between scary Craig M. and meek weatherman Jonathan. What went down? THG breaks down all the action below in its plus-minus index … Ali and Frank’s date features their vintage car breaking down on a jam-packed freeway. That would be pretty hard for the producers to stage, at least. Plus 3 . As they go up to the Hollywood sign, Frank acts as if Ali ganked a key from someone and the producers didn’t somehow arrange all this ahead of time. Plus 4 . On Hollywood Blvd., people flock for autographs and pictures with them. Did ABC plant those “fans”? Are people really that obsessed with celebrities that they will fawn all over … Ali Fedotowsky ? Either way, it’s worthy of at least Minus 10 . A GOOD CHOICE : The guys salivate over Ali. It’s easy to see why . On second thought, when the group date guys (and viewers) get a look at Ali on the beach in Malibu, maybe the blatant ogling makes a little more sense. Plus 20 . Ty, reading the group date card: “Jonathan … is NOT going.” Plus 4 . Craig M. altercation #1: He needles Jesse relentlessly, only to be shut down when Jesse says: “I don’t talk $h!t, I just hit.” Craig M.: “Huge rebuttal.” Minus 5 . The group date is a photo shoot for a Men of The Bachelorette calendar for charity. With a few exceptions … well, let’s just say we feel for the charity. Minus 6 . The Weatherman is way, way too nervous about a Speedo. Minus 7 . Ty confesses that he was married before. He plays guitar for Ali because his ex-wife never wanted to listen to it. The male Tenley Molzahn, everybody! Plus 5 . Craig R. goes after Justin Rego, who he says lied by omission when he didn’t reveal he’s a pro wrestler. We’re not big Rated R fans ourselves, given what The Bachelorette spoilers indicate he does to Ali, but lay off, Craig! The guy’s on crutches! Minus 8 . STORMY WEATHER : Jonathan Novack may be a tad whiny, but we’re totally in his corner when it comes to the feud with Craig M. Fortunately, Ali made the right choice, too. Craig M. altercation #2: Ripping on Jonathan continuously and for no reason. He rats her out to Ali as “dangerous.” D!ck move, but Craig had it coming, so … Wash . For Jesse’s solo date, they jet off to Las Vegas. Plus 6 , ’cause while not a master of conversation, he gets a bit of a bad rap, as he seems nice and honest enough. Chris Lambton is sad he didn’t get a date, but he and Ali bond at the cocktail party over being from Massachusetts. We’ve got a good feeling about him. Plus 11 . Roberto Martinez, similarly, pays Ali many compliments and they seem smitten. He and Chris were small players this week, but are the main contenders. Plus 5 . Minus 4 for the dudes creepin’ in the background though. Subtle, fellas. Craig M. altercation #3: He accosts Jonathan, who, rather than lying or coming clean, says it doesn’t matter who outed him, further angering the sociopath. Minus 5 . Fortunately, Craig M. got the boot. Plus 10 , because while troublemakers are usually entertaining, this egomaniac meathead is just a complete waste of oxygen. TOTAL: +13 . SEASON: +21 . Roses : Frank, Jesse and Ty (won on dates earlier in the night), Kasey, Hunter, Roberto, Chris L., Justin, Steve, Kirk, John C., Craig R., Chris N. and Jonathan. Out : Tyler V., Craig M. and Chris H.

The Bachelorette Season Premiere Recap: Rated R For Ridiculous

It’s that time of year again. The Bachelorette is back, and with it a very cute girl, two dozen dudes competing for air time her heart, and a lot of contrived drama. Bachelor castoff Ali Fedotowsky is calling the shots this time, and as usual, THG will break down the action for you each week with its official plus-minus index … Minus 6 for this cheese ball narration: “I’ve re-prioritized my life, but I’m still that girl who’s going to throw on a pair of jeans and kick around a soccer ball.” – Ali. Plus 5 for the montage of Ali bouncing a soccer ball, though. Man, she just looks like she’s so much FUN! Sporty, even! Plus 2 more for the gratuitous ab shots. Chris Harrison’s greeting intro making it sound like Ali was head over heels for Jake Pavelka, when they engineered her exit and this story from the start. Plus 7 . OMG, Ali gave up her job and apartment to star on The Bachelorette . After seeing this awkward menagerie of men, she might want to call her landlord. Minus 4 . COCK TALES : These guys will say and do anything for Ali’s attention . Is it just us or does Ali look a little more “Hollywood” than last season, like she’s trying a little too hard to look hot? Kind of like, say, Vienna Girardi? Minus 5 . We could spend a long time on each of the guys, but we’ll focus on just a few here. Take Ty from Tennessee. He’s down home Bachelorette bait to a T. Plus 3 . Best pickup line of the night goes to Craig M.: “I’m so glad you’re not Vienna.” Plus 3 . Minus 6 , though, for so many other dudes just plain choking out there. Chris Lambton , a friendly Cape Codder, bonds with Ali over their mutual love of the Boston Red Sox. Plus 11 . We get a good feeling about these two blondes. Derek, a.k.a. Shooter’s explanation of his nickname: ”I prematurely … you know.” Holy crap, dude. Minus 5 , but at least he was prematurely kicked off, too. The first-impression rose goes to Roberto Martinez , who not only teases Ali how to salsa dance, but may be the first non-white contestant in history. Plus 20 . MORE LIKE NC-17 : Give Justin Rego credit for directness, anyway . We hate to say it after one episode, but Ali Fedotowsky is boring in this role. Maybe she’ll grow into it, but Minus 10 , because right now she’s a female Jake Pavelka. Minus 8 for producers resorting to the vintage Bachelorette bag of tricks already – a hopeful tells Ali that certain guys are there for the “wrong reasons.” Shocker! Host-pimp Chris asked each guy to write down who they feel is there under false pretenses. Your winner? Justin Rego , a.k.a. Rated R! Plus 9 for utter obviousness. Ali’s take is that just because the pro wrestler fakes it in the ring doesn’t mean he’s faking it for her. The Bachelorette spoilers we’ve read beg to differ, Al. Minus 8 . Forget Betty White. Someone needs to start a Make The Bachelorette a One-Hour Show group on Facebook. No Points , just saying. P.S. Friend THG on Facebook ! TOTAL: +8 . Roses : Roberto and Justin (earlier); Jesse, Ty, Craig R., Tyler V., Frank, Steven, Chris L., Kirk, John C., Chris N., Chris H., Hunter, Craig M., Jonathan and Kasey. Out : Kyle, Jay, Jason, Shooter, Derek, Tyler M., Phil, and John N.

Guru’s Best: The Top 10 Essential Gang Starr Tracks

MTV News’ hip-hop team shares their faves, plus five of Guru’s Jazzmatazz greats. By Sway Calloway, Rahman Dukes, Shaheem Reid, Steven Roberts and Jayson Rodriguez Gangstarr Photo: Capitol No one questioned Guru’s claim that he was “one of the best yet.” The Boston native had one of the most distinctive voices in hip-hop history. You didn’t even need a whole bar to know that Gifted Universal Rhymes Unlimited was on the mic. Backed by beats from the almighty DJ Premier, Guru supplied glorious vocals on battle raps, intricate life stories and candid street commentary. The 43-year-old MC passed away on Monday due to complications from cancer. And despite the fact that the Gang Starr duo were estranged for the last several years, their legacy is concrete — one of the richest in hip-hop history. Here at MTV News, the hip-hop team listed our choices for 10 essential Gang Starr songs. 1. “Dwyck,” featuring Nice and Smooth : The party record from 1994’s Hard to Earn is timeless. We love the simplistic rhymes from the trio, like, “Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is,” and Primo’s beat is a signature hip-hop treats. 2. “Take It Personal” : The phone rings on the beat; the song (from 1992’s Daily Operation ) is off the hook. With imposing precision, Guru pulls the curtain back and sees a backstabber for the scoundrel he is. “I can see through you, ’cause I’m the Guru/ What you gonna do when I start to step to you.” 3. “Mass Appeal” : No crossover. Gang Starr always kept artistic integrity, and on this Hard to Earn track, Guru admonishes the posers with lines like, “You’re a son like Elroy/ And you’d be happy as hell to get a record deal/ Maybe your soul you sell for the mass appeal.” 4. “Just to Get a Rep” : “Stick up kids just out to tax.” In this song on 1991’s Step in the Arena, Guru’s words take us to the frontlines, where misguided youths think that the way of the gun is the road to respect. 5. “Suckas Need Bodyguard” : The aggression is turned up as Guru puts the heat on chumps in this Hard to Earn song. “My rhymes are a cargo, and yours are just a quarter ounce.” The chorus pretty much gets the group’s point across: “Fake MCs, they always act hard, but won’t walk the streets without their bodyguards.” 6. “Ex-Girl to the Next Girl” : One of Guru’s greatest gifts on the mic was his clarity in thought and articulation. His stories would unfold almost right in front of your eyes. Here, he shows some vulnerability as he navigates the relationship waters but finds triumph in the end. The track (from Daily Operation ) gave an early indication of where he would later go with his heralded Jazzmatazz series. 7. “Royalty,” featuring K-Ci and JoJo: After a four-year break between albums, the two underground Kings returned with two-thirds of the legendary R&B group Jodeci for this inspirational track (on 1998’s Moment of Truth ) about striving for greatness. Guru even shouts out our very own Sway and his partner King Tech. 8. “Words I Manifest” : Vintage, early Gang Starr. The duo came out of the gate promoting knowledge of self and establishing their roles in hip-hop. “I got tenacity, because I have to be/ The brother who must live and give with much insight/ Foresight to ignite, excite and delight.” 9. “You Know My Steez” : Gang Starr talk about their lauded musical modus operandi, an authentic representation of the essence of hip-hop. 10. “The ? Remainz” : “This is a battle rhyme in case you haven’t noticed/ You get replaced, you get demoted.” The belligerence is beautiful in this 1994 track, as Guru and Primo once again answer the bell and silence any questions as to whether they’ve earned the title of hip-hop Ownerz. Five Essential Records From the Jazzmatazz Series : “Loungin’ ” with Donald Byrd “Trust Me” with N’Dea Davenport “Keep Ur Worries” with Angie Stone “Le Bien, le Mal” with MC Solaar “Plenty,” featuring Erykah Badu What are your favorite Gang Starr and Guru songs? The Young Veins’ Take A Vacation!: The Joke’s On You

Ryan Ross and Jon Walker emerge from Panic! at the Disco with a crackling new album, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Young Veins Photo: One Haven Music Last month, as I stood in a half-filled Austin, Texas, dive bar watching Ryan Ross, Jon Walker and the rest of the Young Veins fumble and fuss with their vintage guitars and organs, I couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for them. When Ross’ girlfriend (the Like’s Elizabeth “Z” Berg) began crawling around onstage, attempting to hook up her guitar pedals for him — because, as Ross would tell me later, he had “forgotten” his — I somehow felt a lot worse. After all, this was Ryan Ross, the same kid I had watched stalk the stage at a sold-out (and very loud) arena in 2006 , the same brilliant boy-child who had written one of my favorite albums of 2008 . I had such high hopes for him. The sky truly seemed like it was the limit. But then, he left Panic! at the Disco , posed precariously close to a plate of well-manicured cocaine in a now-infamous photo and disappeared into the hills of Hollywood with Walker to work on a record that would presumably never see the light of day. Either Ross was getting truly terrible career advice, or he had fallen victim to the same thing that had snared so many before him: ego. He had believed the hype, had squandered all that potential and this Austin gig — and a thousand more just like it — would be his penance. It was, for all intents and purposes, over for him. Only, here’s the thing. While the Veins’ set that night wasn’t particularly excellent — it was, after all, only their third show to date — there was something there: a buoyant, playful charm and a jovial jolt, even if the guitars didn’t sound all that great and Ross’ voice got buried in the mix way too often. This didn’t feel the least bit like a funeral — quite the opposite, in fact. Ross and Walker cracked jokes and exchanged wry smiles, exuding the same vibe I got from them toward the end of Panic!’s lifespan . It was, in some small way, like they were still playing an arena (albeit an arena that smelled like beer) and that they were privy to a very secret joke, one they weren’t quite sure they wanted to share with the world. Needless to say, I left the gig feeling a bit puzzled. But a few weeks later, back in New York and thoroughly deodorized, I finally understood what they were laughing about: I received an advance copy of the Veins’ debut album, Take a Vacation! (due June 8), a crackling, lightning-quick effort — 11 songs in just 29 minutes — that’s equal parts salty and sweet, heavily indebted to the past, unbelievably catchy and quite possibly the best joke you’ll hear all year. In other words, it’s pretty much everything I could ask for in a rock record, and then some. Working with producers Rob Mathes and Alex Greenwald (formerly of Phantom Planet), Ross and Walker have made an album that is totally, 100 percent theirs. Holed up in Calabasas, California, they listened to a ton of old 45s, probably smoked some funny cigarettes, watched the sun rise, made bonfires in the hills, invited all their friends over to sing on the choruses and cranked out songs that bear no resemblance to the rock music of today (and, by logical extension, have positively no chance of getting played on modern rock radio). They took the parts of Panic! at the Disco’s last album that fans liked least — the strummy, sunny, really excellent ones (“Northern Downpour,” etc.) — and made an entire record of them. And they did this all basically because they wanted to. It’s their own private joke (or their own private psychedelic reel ), one they eventually decided to share with the world. Buy only after they were good and ready to. And that’s probably what I like most about Vacation! — the fact that it’s deeply personal, important mostly to Ross and Walker. These are the songs they’ve wanted to write, even while the other half of Panic! seemed headed in the opposite direction. And so, they left the band and did their own thing. Repercussions and public opinion be damned. There are plenty of great musical moments too — the “aah-aah-aahs” and undeniable chorus of “Cape Town,” the enchantment-under-the-sea-worthy ballad “Everyone but You,” the campy stomp of “The Young Veins (Die Tonight),” smoky and ebullient album-closer “Heart of Mine” — but it’s that dogged determination to do their own thing, even if it means a lifetime of fumbling with vintage guitars in Texas dive bars that stands out most to me. It’s like Ross sings on “Other Girl,” just before the tune breaks out in a stony, sunrise-approved guitar solo: “You were right, I was wrong/ Like I always am, and you always are.” There are probably a million people he could be directing the line toward, only you know he doesn’t really care about any of them. He’s fumbling and stumbling to the beat of his own drummer now. Who cares about the future when you’ve got the past? Questions? Concerns? Hit me up at BTTS@MTVStaff.com .
